experts are calling the tech outage that rocked airports, hospitals and emergency services. the recovery efforts continue this morning, plus organizers ramping up their campaign to recall the alameda county da. their focus at today's rally and the 80th anniversary of the port chicago explosion. what's expected today following the exoneration of hundreds of black sailors? good morning everybody. it's saturday, july 20th. let's get right to your forecast. meteorologist drew tuma joining us on a saturday. >> good morning. i mean, it was so hot yesterday. we're going to get relief from that heat today. yesterday some of our hottest areas hit 106. a lot better this weekend a live look from our sutro tower camera showing you we have very clear skies from this vantage point. some coastal clouds right now. looking at today's forecast, it is a lot cooler. walnut creek, you're like 20 degrees cooler today compared to yesterday. 60s for half moon bay in the city. the problem is the winds are going to pick up later on this afternoon, gusting about 20 to 30mph. still hanging on to some

of that warmth inland. 60s and 70s right now. good morning brentwood, you're at 72 degrees. so looking inland today we're dropping those highs about ten degrees compared to yesterday. we'll go into the low and mid 90s with full sunshine later on this afternoon. no heat advisories in effect today. we'll see cooler weather around the bay shoreline. yesterday we were in the 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline. today a lot better in the 70s with full sunshine and along the coast. today we have some clouds out there. we'll turn partly sunny later on this afternoon. quite nice, but it will be windy today. we'll take a closer look at those winds. stephanie coming up in just a few minutes. drew. >> thank you. now back to that developing news. airlines, businesses, hospitals and other services are gradually coming back online. this morning a wave of it outages swept across the world friday, showing everyone how dependent we all are on technology. cybersecurity company crowdstrike says its outage was caused by a faulty software update. abc news reporter derek dennis has more on the fallout. >> a wave of i.t. outages swept

across the globe friday morning. >> i've never experienced anything like this, that's for sure, crowdstrike, an american cybersecurity firm, said the outage was caused by a faulty software update delivered to microsoft devices and servers. >> hours into the outages, ceo george kurtz apologizing. >> we're deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies. >> travel taking the hardest hit as frustrated passengers were stranded with information displays showing the so-called blue screen of death error message, some airlines even resorting to handwritten boarding passes. only 47% of flights departed on time friday, with 57% having a 30 minute delay or greater in the u.s, according to the global aviation analytics firm cirium, emergency and hospital systems in multiple states were also disrupted, which resulted in some medical facilities canceling elective procedures. >> we are vulnerable as a country and of course, the more

interconnected we are when it comes to travel and medical care and emergency services and military, the more vulnerable we are to this type of threat. it is something we should take extremely serious. as serious as we take air and missile defense, for example, crowdstrike says the software issue has now been identified and a fix has been deployed. >> derek dennis, abc news new york. >> all right, let's get a look at how airports across the country are doing right now. more than 1000 flights traveling within into or out of the u.s. are currently delayed. this morning, flightaware is also reporting more than 1200 flights that have been canceled. so far today. here in the bay area, sfo is reporting nearly 40 delays this morning and nearly 40 cancellations. oakland is seeing four delays and as jc is also reporting for delays, long lines and frustrated passengers filled san francisco international

airport. here's a live picture from there. now, travelers spent the last 24 hours trying to get to their final destinations. abc seven news reporter ryan curry went to sfo, where operations are slowly getting back to normal. >> a long line of people waiting to get some clarity about their flights, the departure and arrival screens were as popular as a living room, tv set, only a lot less fun. frustration on the screens and in every terminal. >> we haven't seen the board on our flight, so we just presume that delta is being pretty honest with us and it's on time. >> joe and sharon bellino are headed back to atlanta, but they don't know if their red eye flight will even leave when it's supposed to. >> we haven't gotten any type of tax telling us it's going to be late, but my daughter, who's supposed to pick us up on the other end, seems to think it is. so we'll find out. >> i guess the crowdstrike outage forced many airlines to temporarily halt flights. what followed was a long day of delays and cancellations.

>> we get to bradley international airport and in connecticut and we're thinking, okay, we're early, we're going to get here, okay, no problem. and then delay, and then we're stuck there. our flight was at 530 and then we leave at nine uh- 915 920. >> tarek ibrahim is waiting at the delta baggage claim to see if his bags are even here. >> we're trying to figure that out because it was, you know, because they're like, oh, they booked us onto the flight for the next day. but we were on standby for this flight, so we were able to make it on and uh. so i don't know. i don't even know. >> terminal two was full of people doing the same thing. the carousels were crowded, bags stacked up in the lobby. did delta offer any sort of like refund or voucher? >> they said no, no refund, no vouchers. they said all we could do is rebook you onto the next flight. >> he is frustrated and tired, but he is happy the long day is over. >> i hope i find my bag, get out of here. that's it. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> many people didn't know of

crowdstrike until yesterday. the company is a cybersecurity firm founded in sunnyvale but now based in austin. it provides cloud security and cyber attack response. crowdstrike has worked with the us government on responding to global hacks and cyber espionage coming from russia, china and north korea. it was the first to issue an alert about russian interference in the 2016 election. crowdstrike stock fell 11% yesterday as a result of the global computer outage. we will continue to follow this story here on air and online to keep up with the latest developments, you can visit us over on our website, abc7 news.com or download the abc seven bay area app and enable push alerts. well, p-g-and-e's is warning customers of a possible psps or public safety power shut off, which could begin today. officials say it's due to high winds and dry conditions. the potential shut off could affect 16,000 customers in six counties, including two here in

the bay area. p-g-and-e's says more than 500 customers and portions of alameda and contra costa counties have been the port chicago explosion. the event is especially notable this year because it comes days after the exoneration of the port chicago 50. the port chicago incident was one of the largest world war two military disasters. 320 men died when

policing and more oversight of police. peskin answered to criticism that he stood in the way of new housing construction. >> i have actually authorized in my 24 years since i was first elected, more housing than all of the other candidates combined all over this city. but we did it with neighborhoods. when we rezoned the eastern neighborhoods, we went to those neighborhoods and those leaders and asked them what they wanted, and they wanted parks and playgrounds for their kids and child care centers and we built

that into the plan. more recently, it's really been the city and mayor breed against those neighborhoods, not listening to them, not incorporating their plans. when i first became a supervisor, we got three of those parcels that were the former embarcadero freeway parcels, and i insisted that they be affordable housing. that's exactly what i'll do as mayor. >> we interviewed five san francisco mayoral candidates this week, and we have them all posted over on our website, abc7 news.com. and a reminder in september, abc7 news and the san francisco standard are joining forces to co-host a live debate with the top candidates. you can watch it live on september 25th at 6 p.m. now to this regional medical center in san jose is canceling plans to close its trauma heart attack and stroke centers. but some community members say the fight for reliable medical care is not over. regional will change its destination designation, that

is, from level two to a level three trauma center, and that still allows for intensive trauma care. it's a potentially life saving victory for east san jose residents. they say the attempt to shut down was a cost cutting measure by the hospital's parent company. >> when a corporation comes in to our community in east san jose makes their profits and then divests life saving care from our community. once they deem that as no longer profitable, we can and we must fight back. >> hca healthcare, which owns regional medical center, says the stroke center will address the needs of 97% of patients. it's also revamping its acute heart attack program to have a cardiologist available 24 hours a day. san jose is now the first in the state to allow the sale of adus. they're the accessory dwelling units seen in many backyards. adus have been a way to raise money or help out a

relative. now they can help people get into affordable homes. a new law passed in january, allowing them to be sold separately from the main house. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has more on the benefits. >> people are surprised at how small of a footprint you actually need for an adu. >> dan kiernan built his 500 square foot adu behind his five bedroom home back in 2021. he says everyone who's rented his place loves it for the space. >> high ceilings, 15ft. there's a contained bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. >> now, instead of renting out the adu, he can actually sell it like a condo. >> it opens the door for homeownership. we are in a huge housing shortage all over california. >> we are trying to desperately catch up and find a way to build more housing. >> right now, many cities allow for adus, which are a lot like backyard cottages or in-law units or casitas. san jose has received twice as many adu

applications as oakland, and four times as many as san francisco. in january, assemblyman phil ting's bill ab 1033 became law allowing property owners to sell their adus like condominiums separate from their home. cities have to go one step further and adopt an ordinance to allow for that law to take effect. other cities like berkeley are trying to adopt the ordinance, but san jose stepped up first this week. >> san jose became the first city in california to implement ab 1033. >> san jose mayor matt mehan says this is a big win for his city. it was create accessible homeownership, particularly for young people, for people aging out of their larger homes on a fixed income. >> and it becomes a source of revenue. >> mayor mehan says this couldn't have come at a better time. >> silicon valley has added about six jobs for every one new home that we've built, and the new homes that we are building are slow to build and they're expensive and this creates a much more accessible form of home ownership. >> kiernan already has a buyer

in mind for his adu. his in-laws in sacramento have been wanting to move to the bay area for a while now, but haven't been able to afford it, he says. now they can buy a home in san jose and be super close to family in san jose. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> in san francisco, ike's love and sandwiches celebrated the opening of its 100th store, where it all began. ike's fans lined up outside the newest flagship location in the mission rock neighborhood, within walking distance to oracle park. the first 100 guests received a free sandwich and an exclusive t shirt. the founder, ike shara, was there and shared his recipe for success. >> the first one, it was a lot of oh my god, what did i do? because i wasn't selling anything in the beginning. and then the opposite happened when we got so busy and it was like three hour waits. then people started getting upset with me and i was like, oh, well, i don't want to go out of business. when you're doing what you're doing, people will show up and clamor for it and come to

you need one. >> i would love one. we were watching her yesterday in the interview and i was like, do i chime in and say like make me one? like clouds the sun, all of it. the storm impact scale on it. yes, i was going to say it needs to have some weather going on. >> yeah, whatever the number is in the wintertime, just wear that jacket. >> i think we have an idea on our hands today. we break the heat that we had yesterday. heat advisories are done. the weekend is looking fantastic out there. here's a live look from the tam cam this morning. you can see some clouds out there. right now you're not noticing any fog from this vantage point. any clouds we have are really just associated along the immediate coastline. the bigger story today, just prepare yourselves for a windy afternoon. this is how we get rid of that heat yesterday, as cooler air moves in. it comes on the heels of some gusty winds. those winds about 20 to 40mph. at times that leads to a cooler sunday on the way both days. this weekend are going to be nice, just breezy at times and then next week again we are heating up. we're going to have fresh heat advisories

likely coming our way as we head towards monday and tuesday. looking at the forecast today, inland, we'll knock about ten degrees after off of yesterday's heat. we'll stay in the mid 90s for daytime highs mid 70s around the bay shoreline today, but it does turn windy. and then along the coast it's a pretty cloudy day, not nearly as bright as yesterday. and temperatures in the 60s as low pressure moves in here to the north and high pressures nearby creates that wind tunnel effect. that's why we'll get pretty breezy here later on this afternoon. look at the winds today. by about 3:04 p.m, we could see winds along the coast in excess of 40mph. for most of us. i think those winds are on the order of 20 to 40mph. so it will be a windy afternoon later today. cooler and windy. that's the call for your saturday. lots of sunshine in the south bay. a lot cooler yesterday. san jose. yesterday we were in the mid 90s. today we're in the low 80s for a daytime high 81. in san jose we'll go to 77 in cupertino along the peninsula 79. redwood city 75 mountain view. pretty cloudy along the coast today, low and mid 60s there across the city today we'll knock about 5 to 10 degrees off of yesterday's

heat. we'll mainly stay in the mid 60s for most of our cities, close to the coast in the north bay. some pockets of hot weather still hanging on through santa rosa and calistoga, but certainly cooler for san rafael. novato 76. the high in sausalito today in the east bay, will be in the 70s, cooler than yesterday. those winds pick up gusting about 20 30mph this afternoon. and then inland we're about 10 to 15 degrees cooler. yesterday our hottest cities hit 106 86. today in san ramon. sounds a lot better overnight. tonight we'll see our marine layer expand even more. so we'll likely see some coastal drizzle. and tomorrow morning we'll start out with a fair amount of cloud cover. but tomorrow afternoon the cooling trend continues. quite lovely tomorrow and then we start to heat things back up on monday. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. cooler but windy today. close to average tomorrow. and then we're back in that summer sizzle for several days. looks like at least four days of hot weather coming our way starting monday and lasting through thursday before we cool off on friday. stephanie. all right, drew,

replace biden if he drops out of the race. local experts weighing in as he faces mounting pressure to step aside. good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. this half hour. we'll have more on that story in just a moment. but first, let's check in with drew on your saturday forecast. >> hey good morning. yeah. it's going to be a lot cooler today. no heat advisories in effect this weekend. but it does turn windy this afternoon. let's take you to our okay camera this morning a live look outside as some of the aircraft are taxiing this morning. we do have partly cloudy conditions overhead right now. not widespread fog. currently 59, in oakland with high humidity at 90. so let's get you going on this saturday. we do find a mix of sun and clouds early on, giving way to full sunshine, and those temperatures are a lot slower to warm today compared to yesterday through the 60s and low 70s by 11 a.m. so inland today it's about 10 to 15 degrees cooler will be in the low and mid 90s for daytime. highs around the bay shoreline significantly cooler instead of the 80s and

90s of yesterday. will be in the 70s with full sunshine and along the coast. we'll keep it cloudy early on. some sunshine in the afternoon, but it will be windy and highs in the low 60s. >> stephanie drew, thank you. now to your voice. your vote here in the bay area calls for president biden to step aside. are growing some local democrats are making it official. they want the president to pass the torch to another candidate and fear that biden cannot win. in november, south bay democratic congresswoman zoe lofgren says her party needs a strong candidate to defeat trump in november. but she says president biden is not that person. lofgren wrote a letter to the president urging him to withdraw from the race, abc news reports. she is the 31st congressional democrat to call on biden to end his campaign. >> i've asked him to step aside for a candidate who would have a better chance of beating donald trump, but in the end, it's president biden's decision. >> north bay congressman jared huffman has also joined the

call, signing this letter urging biden to leave the race. the president has been losing momentum since his controversial debate performance three weeks ago now. but the question remains who would replace biden? vice president kamala harris is being floated as the most likely option. abc seven news anchor julian glover has a look at harris's chances. >> vice president kamala harris spotted in washington, d.c, friday afternoon with her grand nieces visiting an ice cream shop opened by tyra banks. harris ignored questions from reporters asking what she would say to democratic voters. harris, on the attack during a rally in fayetteville, north carolina, thursday night. making her case for a second. biden harris term. >> so, friends, i say the contrast between joe biden and donald trump is like night and day. >> the vice president remains all in on the ticket publicly as

weekend. they'll hold their first joint campaign rally this morning in grand rapids, michigan. it's trump's first campaign rally since he was injured during an assassination attempt in pennsylvania a week ago. michigan is expected to be a crucial swing state that could determine the outcome of the election. the department of homeland security failed to meet their deadline to provide documents about the assassination attempt on former president trump. in response, a congressional committee has issued a subpoena demanding information. the republican led committee wants information about the security efforts. during trump's rally, the committee chairman, mark greene, had requested those documents one day after the shooting. we're learning more about the moments leading up to that shooting. it suggests there were opportunities to stop the accused gunman, thomas crooks. but the information does not reveal whether concerns about him were actually sent to the secret service. newly obtained photos show him looking at news feeds before the incident. crooks was first spotted by a

local swat team member at 5:10 p.m. last saturday. four minutes later, his photo was taken by a member of the sniper team. at 532, a sniper noticed crooks had a rangefinder. nine minutes later, he was spotted lurking around a building. about 6 p.m, police requested more information about his whereabouts and then police began to move in on him. about six minutes later, at 612 that night, shots were fired and police confirmed crooks is dead. just after 630, longtime us representative sheila jackson lee has died. the texas congresswoman had pancreatic cancer. she represented her houston based district since 1995. the democrat led efforts to protect women from domestic violence. she also worked to have juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday. jackson lee was previously diagnosed with breast cancer and announced her pancreatic cancer in june. she was 74. closer to home now we
