outage in history, that's what experts are calling the tech outage that rocked airports, hospitals and emergency services. the recovery efforts this morning, plus organizers ramping up their campaign to recall the alameda county da. their focus at today's rally and the 80th anniversary of the port chicago explosion. what's expected today following the exoneration of hundreds of black sailors? good morning everybody. it's saturday, july 20th. let's get right to your forecast. drew is here. and more on that win today. >> good morning. nice to be with you. i'm so glad you're here. yeah. cooler today. we do have some gusty winds to talk about this afternoon. here's a live look outside. good morning, san jose. current conditions right now showing you partly cloudy skies out there 64 degrees higher humidity and visibility is fantastic. looking at today's forecast, a lot cooler than yesterday, especially our inland cities dropping about 10 to 20 degrees compared to yesterday. 60s for the coast and the city.

oakland in the mid 70s. today walnut creek a lot better than yesterday. if you don't like the heat, will be in the 80s. so inland forecast today will drop those numbers uh- into the 80s and 90s compared to the triple digits we had yesterday. lots of sunshine out there, no heat advisories in effect around the bay shoreline. a lot cooler compared to yesterday. we'll stay in the 70s. that feels nice for this time of the year. and then along the coast we have clouds right now, giving way to some sunshine this afternoon. but the winds will be an issue along the coast. stephanie, we'll show you those numbers coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thank you. developing news now. airlines, businesses, hospitals and other services are gradually coming back online. this morning, a wave of it outages swept across the world friday showing everyone how dependent we all are on technology. cybersecurity company crowdstrike says its outage was caused by a faulty software update. abc news reporter derek dennis has more on the fallout. >> a wave of i.t. outages swept across the globe friday morning. >> i've never experienced anything like this, that's for

sure, crowdstrike, an american cybersecurity firm, said the outage was caused by a faulty software update delivered to microsoft devices and servers. >> hours into the outages, ceo george kurtz apologizing. >> we're deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies. >> travel taking the hardest hit as frustrated passengers were stranded with information displays showing the so-called blue screen of death error message, some airlines even resorting to handwritten boarding passes. only 47% of flights departed on time friday, with 57% having a 30 minute delay or greater in the u.s, according to the global aviation analytics firm cirium, emergency and hospital systems in multiple states were also disrupted, which resulted in some medical facilities canceling elective procedures. >> we are vulnerable as a country and of course, the more interconnected we are when it comes to travel and medical care

and emergency services and military, the more vulnerable we are to this type of threat. it is something we should take extremely serious. as serious as we take air and missile defense. >> for example, crowdstrike says the software issue has now been identified and a fix has been deployed. derek dennis, abc news new york. >> all right, let's get a look at how airports across the country are doing right now. more than 1000 flights traveling within, into or out of the u.s. are currently delayed. and you know what? that is actually been updated as of right now to more than 1400 flights. flightaware is also reporting more than 1300 flights have been canceled so far today. now, here in the bay area, sfo is reporting nearly 50 delays as of this morning and about 45 cancellations. oakland is seeing five delays and sjc is also reporting four delays, long lines and frustrated passengers filled san francisco international airport. here's a

live picture from there. now travelers spent the last 24 hours trying to get to their final destinations. abc seven news reporter ryan curry went to sfo, where operations are slowly getting back to normal. >> a long line of people waiting to get some clarity about their flights, the departure and arrival screens were as popular as a living room tv set, only a lot less fun. frustration on the screens and in every terminal. >> we haven't seen the board on our flight, so we just presume that delta is being pretty honest with us and it's on time. >> joe and sharon bellino are headed back to atlanta, but they don't know if their red eye flight will even leave when it's supposed to. >> we haven't gotten any type of tax telling us it's going to be late, but my daughter, who's supposed to pick us up on the other end, seems to think it is. so we'll find out. >> i guess the crowdstrike outage forced many airlines to temporarily halt flights. what followed was a long day of delays and cancellations. >> we get to bradley

international airport and in connecticut, and we're thinking, okay, we're early, we're going to get here, okay, no problem. and then delay, and then we're stuck there. our flight was at 530 and then we leave at nine uh- 915, 920. >> tarek ibrahim is waiting at the delta baggage claim to see if his bags are even here. >> we're trying to figure that out because it was, you know, because they're like, oh, they booked us onto the flight for the next day. but we were on standby for this flight, so we were able to make it on and uh. so i don't know. i don't even know. >> terminal two was full of people doing the same thing. the carousels were crowded, bags stacked up in the lobby. did delta offer any sort of like refund or voucher? >> they said no, no refund, no vouchers. they said all we could do is rebook you onto the next flight. >> he is frustrated and tired, but he is happy the long day is over. >> i hope i find my bag, get out of here. that's it. >> ryan curry abc seven news. >> many people did not know of

crowdstrike until yesterday. the company is a cybersecurity firm founded in sunnyvale, but now based in austin. it provides cloud security and cyber attack response. crowdstrike has worked with the us government on responding to global hacks and cyber espionage coming from russia, china and north korea. it was the first to issue an alert about russian interference in the 2016 election. crowdstrike stock fell 11% yesterday as a result of this global outage. we will continue to follow this story here on air and online to keep up with the latest developments, you can visit our website, abc seven news.com or download the abc seven bay area app and enable push alerts. p-g-and-e's is warning customers of a possible psps or public safety power shut off, which could begin as early as today, officials say it's due to high winds and dry condition. the potential shut off could affect 16,000 customers in six counties, including two here in the bay area. p-g-and-e's says more than 500 customers in

portions of alameda and contra costa counties have been notified. the shutoffs could start at 11 a.m. happening today, the group behind the recall of alameda county district attorney pamela price will hold a rally in hayward, organizers of safe say business owners and young people will be speaking about how they've been impacted by violent crime. price has been accused of being too soft on crime, but supporters have argued she's doing the job the way she was elected to do it. this comes after an apparent misunderstanding on a proposed partnership between price's office and the office of the governor earlier this week. happening today, the community will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the port chicago explosion. the event is especially notable this year because it comes days after the exoneration of the port chicago 50. the port chicago incident was one of the largest world war two military disasters. 320 men died when munitions exploded. it started a wave of servicemen

what they wanted, and they wanted parks and playgrounds for their kids. and child care centers. and we built that into the plan. more recently, it's really been the city and mayor breed against those neighborhoods, not listening to them, not incorporating their plans. when i first became a supervisor, we got three of those parcels that were the former embarcadero freeway parcels, and i insisted that they be affordable housing. that's exactly what i'll do as mayor, we interviewed five san francisco mayoral candidates this week, and we have them all posted over on our website, abc7 news .com. >> and a reminder in september, abc7 news and the san francisco standard are joining forces to co-host a live debate with the top candidates. you can watch it live on september 25th at 6 p.m. now to this regional medical center in san jose is canceling plans to close its trauma, heart attack and stroke centers. but some community members say the fight for reliable medical care is not over. regional will

change its designation from level two to a level three trauma center. that's still allows for intensive trauma care. it's a potentially life saving victory for east san jose residents. they say the attempt to shut down was a cost cutting measure by the hospital's parent company. >> when a corporation comes in to our community in east san jose makes their profits and then divests life saving care from our community once they deem that as no longer profitable, we can and we must fight back. >> hca healthcare, which owns regional medical center, says the stroke center will address the needs of 97% of patients. it's also revamping its acute heart attack program to have a cardiologist available 24 hours a day. san jose is now the first in the state to allow the sale of adus. they're the accessory dwelling units seen in many

backyards. adus have been a way to raise money or help out a relative, and now they can be helping people get into affordable homes. a new law passed in january, allowing them to be sold separately from the main house, abc seven news reporter suzanne phan has more on the benefits. >> people are surprised at how small of a footprint you actually need for an adu. >> dan kiernan built his 500 square foot adu behind his five bedroom home back in 2021. he says. everyone who's rented his place loves it for the space high ceilings, 15ft. >> there's a contained bedroom, kitchen, bathroom now, instead of renting out the adu, he can actually sell it like a condo. it opens the door for homeownership. we are in a huge housing shortage all over california. >> we are trying to desperately catch up and find a way to build more housing. >> right now, many cities allow for adus, which are a lot like backyard cottages or in-law

units or casitas. san jose has received twice as many adu applications as oakland, and four times as many as san francisco. in january, assemblyman phil ting's bill ab 1033 became law allowing property owners to sell their adus like condominiums, separate from their home. cities have to go one step further and adopt an ordinance to allow for that law to take effect. other cities like berkeley are trying to adopt the ordinance, but san jose stepped up first this week. >> san jose became the first city in california to implement ab 1033. >> san jose mayor matt mehan says this is a big win for his city. >> it was create accessible homeownership, particularly for young people, for people aging out of their larger homes on a fixed income. and it becomes a source of revenue. >> mayor mehan says. this couldn't have come at a better time. >> silicon valley has added about six jobs for every one new home that we've built, and the new homes that we are building are slow to build and they're

expensive. and this creates a much more accessible form of home ownership. kiernan already has a buyer in mind for his adu. >> his in-laws in sacramento have been wanting to move to the bay area for a while now, but haven't been able to afford it, he says. now they can buy a home in san jose and be super close to family in san jose. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> also in san francisco, ike's love and sandwiches celebrated the opening of its 100th store, where it all began. ike's fans lined up outside the newest flagship location in the mission rock neighborhood. it's within walking distance to oracle park. the first 100 guests received a free sandwich and an exclusive t shirt. the founder, ike shahadah, was there and shared his recipe for success. >> the first one, it was a lot of oh my god, what did i do? because i wasn't selling anything in the beginning. and then the opposite happened when we got so busy and was like three hour waits. then people started getting upset with me and i was like, oh, well, i

say this year she's not selling any of those jackets, but they are very cute. especially, of course, if you're a niners fan, drew, you obviously need one. we've been talking about your design. i know i think it needs like a storm tracker scale at some scale on it, the storm impact scale, some clouds, some sunshine. >> but we were joking with her that she now has more followers than her partner. because of this. yeah, which is amazing. can you believe it? a professional athlete and now she's famous in the right ways for getting that clothing off. taylor swift also helps you out there. you get that on her. so we're looking outside today and is going to be a lot cooler. but we do have to talk about the winds a live look outside from our rooftop camera. it's a light breeze out there, but those flags will be waving a lot faster this afternoon. those winds will gust about 20 to 40mph, but that brings in cooler air today. tomorrow is even cooler with some morning fog to sunshine. but then next week we are heating up once again. for several days we'll find temperatures above average right now it's pretty pleasant out there. 50s and 60s around the

bay shoreline. good morning fremont. we're at 6064 in livermore. a little bit warmer as you see some of our inland communities hanging on to some of that warm air we had yesterday, 70 in brentwood, 75 right now in cloverdale. if you're golfing today, you'll benefit from lighter winds this morning. just know into the afternoon. those winds are out of the west, about 20 to 40mph. so it's a gusty afternoon coming our way. your weather wellness today. air quality is good to moderate, pollen levels are low and the uv index is a nine that is very high. so today's forecast lots of sunshine inland. we'll get those temperatures into the 90s which is a lot cooler than yesterday. our hottest areas inland hit about 106 for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. a sunny afternoon cooler than yesterday will stay in the 70s. and then along the coast. it's pretty cloudy out there from start to finish. we'll keep those numbers in the 60s with those gusty winds, low pressures getting closer, high pressure still with us and the proximity between these two gives us that wind tunnel effect. and that's why the winds will pick up this afternoon. so future tracker showing you by 3:00 pm likely along the coast. winds in excess

of 40mph for areas away from the coast. we'll see those winds between 20 and 40mph. highs today in our microclimates a lot cooler in the south bay. no heat advisories in effect today. 70s and 80s for the most part along the peninsula, 79 redwood city, but 60s for the coast around the city. today you'll notice the cool down compared to yesterday will stay mainly in the 60s under mix of sun and clouds. remember, those winds turn gusty this afternoon in the north bay. a wide range 60s and 70s along the coast, but 80s and 90s in our warmest spots today. looking at lows tonight, we'll find those numbers in the 50s and in the 60s. just know that marine layer grows a lot more, will likely have some coastal drizzle as well. looking at tomorrow. even cooler than today, tomorrow temperatures are actually closer to average for this time of the year. but watch what happens on monday. we're right back up into that warm weather as heat takes over once again. here's the accuweather seven day forecast, showing you it's a cooler afternoon today. we do have a windy day tomorrow. it's close to average and then we heat right back up. get ready for

and then the winds pick up this afternoon. good morning, walnut creek. sunny skies out there. a live look from our camera at 63 right now in walnut creek. it was sure hot yesterday. temperatures 105 106 and our hottest areas inland. humidity is high this morning. let's get you going on this saturday over the next several hours we have a mix of sun and clouds giving way to brighter skies. the warming process is a lot slower compared to yesterday. it feels a lot more comfortable. this morning. take a look at our inland communities. cooler than yesterday but still warm. will be in the low to mid 90s for daytime highs. that sure is better than the 105 106 we had yesterday around the bay. shoreline cooler than yesterday as well. pretty comfortable in the 70s, but the winds turn breezy this afternoon and then along the coast. this is the area that will have the strongest winds. temperatures in the low 60s. we'll take a closer look at those strong winds this afternoon. stephanie coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right drew, thank you. now to your voice. your vote here in the bay area calls for president biden to step aside. are growing some local democrats are making it official. they want the president to pass the torch to another candidate and

fear that biden cannot win. in november, south bay democratic congresswoman zoe lofgren says her party needs a strong candidate to defeat trump in november. but she says president biden is not that person. lofgren wrote a letter to the president urging him to withdraw from the race, abc news reports. she's the 31st congressional democrat to call on biden to end his campaign. >> i've asked him to step aside for a candidate who would have a better chance of beating donald trump. but in the end, it's president biden's decision. >> north bay congressman jared huffman has also joined the call, signing this letter urging biden to leave the race. now, the president has been losing momentum since his controversial debate performance three weeks ago. but the question remains who would replace biden? vice president kamala harris is being floated as the most likely option. abc seven news anchor julian glover has a closer look at harris's chances

>> vice president kamala harris spotted in washington, d.c, friday afternoon with her grand nieces visiting an ice cream shop opened by tyra banks. harris ignored questions from reporters asking what she would say to democratic voters. harris on the attack during a rally in fayetteville, north carolina, thursday night, making her case for a second biden harris term. >> so, friends, i say the contrast between joe biden and donald trump is like night and day. >> the vice president remains all in on the ticket publicly as more than 30 congressional democrats demand president biden pass the torch among the rising stars in the democratic party. harris, born in oakland, raised in berkeley, is one of the most likely replacements for biden should he step aside. >> but right now, as it stands, she would have the first right of refusal or the first right to attempt to get the democratic

documents about the assassination attempt on former president trump. in response, a congressional committee has issued a subpoena demanding more information. the republican led committee wants information about the security efforts during trump's rally. the committee chair, mark greene, has requested those documents. he actually did so one day after the shooting. we're learning more about the moments leading up to the shooting. it suggests there were opportunities to stop the accused gunman, thomas crooks. but the information does not reveal whether concerns about him were actually sent to the secret service. newly obtained photos show him looking at news feeds before the incident. crooks was first spotted by a local swat team member at 5:10 p.m. last saturday, four minutes later, his photo was taken by a member of the sniper team. at 532, a sniper noticed crooks had a rangefinder. nine minutes later, he was spotted, quote, lurking around a building. about 6 p.m, police requested more information about his

whereabouts. police then began to move in on him. six minutes later at 612, shots were fired that evening and police confirmed crooks was dead just after 630. closer to home. now we are following developing news on that massive outage that disrupted everyday operations across the world and right here in the bay area. people reported having problems at the dmv and several stores. abc7 south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us how local hospitals, restaurants and even banks are now holding up the impact of crowdstrike's global outage will be felt in the bay area this weekend. inside oakland's michelin star restaurant, comey, their bar kitchen will be shut down through saturday. three chefs are stuck out of town, caught in travel chaos. reservations for this fine dining destination are usually booked a month in advance. kaiser is among the health systems across the u.s. affected, a statement to abc seven said in part, we activated our national command center at

4:30 a.m. pacific time to address this incident. it went on to say all kaiser permanente hospitals and medical offices remain open for care and service at the alameda county superior court. employees arrived to computers with blue screens. >> our focus was to get the criminal side up and going because those have strict deadlines and uh- when court hearings have to take place in the south bay, the santa clara county superior court announced friday they're experiencing technical disruptions, an alert on their website read. >> the court is still experiencing delays with our e-file and phone systems. as far as small businesses. employees at classic loot in san jose were uncertain what their workday would look like. >> we were freaked out in the morning and we weren't sure if anything was going to work, if we were going to be able to take purchases. so we were like, already trying to think of like plans of like, can we can only take cash. we can like direct people to the bank.
