sure. >> crowdstrike, an american cybersecurity firm, said the outage was caused by a faulty software update delivered to microsoft devices and servers. hours into the outages, ceo george kurtz apologizing. >> we're deeply sorry for the impact that we've caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies. >> travel, taking the hardest hit as frustrated passengers were stranded with information displays showing the so-called blue screen of death error message, some airlines even resorting to handwritten boarding passes. only 47% of flights departed on time friday, with 57% having a 30 minute delay or greater in the u.s, according to the global aviation analytics firm cirium, emergency and hospital systems in multiple states were also disrupted, which resulted in some medical facilities canceling elective procedures. we are vulnerable as a country, and of course, the more interconnected we are when it comes to travel and medical

care and emergency services and military, the more vulnerable we are to this type of threat. >> it is something we should take extremely serious as serious as we take air and missile defense, for example, crowdstrike says the software issue has now been identified and a fix has been deployed. >> derrick dennis, abc news, new york. >> all right, let's get a look at how airports across the country are doing right now. abc news reports that as of 830 this morning, some 1200 flights have been canceled nationwide, with almost 3000 delayed. globally, there are more than 1600 cancellations and more than 21,000 flight delays. now here in the bay area, sfo is reporting nearly 90 delays as of this morning and about 50 cancellations. oakland is seeing six delays, and sjc is also reporting about 14 delays. delta is the airline most impacted by the crowdstrike outage and expects cancellations throughout

the day. meanwhile, united says it's hoping to return to near normal operations today. here's a live picture from sfo right now where the delays and long lines have frustrated passengers. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has more on the impact to travelers at sfo. >> reporter a long line of people waiting to get some clarity about their flights. the departure and arrival screens were as popular as a living room tv set, only a lot less fun frustration on the screens and in every terminal. >> we haven't seen the board on our flight, so we just presume that delta is being pretty honest with us and it's on time. >> joe and sharon bellino are headed back to atlanta, but they don't know if their red eye flight will even leave when it's supposed to. >> we haven't gotten any type of text telling us it's going to be late, but my daughter, who's supposed to pick us up on the other end, seems to think it is. so we'll find out. i guess the crowdstrike outage forced many airlines to temporarily halt flights.

>> what followed was a long day of delays and cancellations. >> we get to bradley international airport and in connecticut, and we're thinking, okay, we're early, we're going to get here, okay, no problem, and then delay and then we're stuck there. our flight was at 530 and then we leave at nine uh- 915 920. >> tarek ibrahim is waiting at delta baggage claim to see if his bags are even here. >> we're trying to figure that out because it was, you know, because they were like, oh, they booked us onto the flight for the next day. but we were on standby for this flight. so we were able to make it on. and, so i don't know, i don't even know. >> terminal two was full of people doing the same thing. the carousels were crowded, bags stacked up in the lobby. did delta offer any sort of like, refund or voucher? >> they said no, no refund, no vouchers. they said all we could do is rebook you onto the next flight. >> he is frustrated and tired, but he is happy. the long day is over. >> i hope i find my bag, get out of here. that's it. ryan curry,

customers in six counties, including two here in the bay area. p-g-and-e's says more than 500 customers in portions of alameda and contra costa counties have been notified. those shutoffs could start as early as 11 a.m. now to your voice, your vote. we're wrapping up our conversations with all five major candidates for san francisco mayor. we talked with board of supervisors president aaron peskin, and he backs more community policing and more oversight of police surveillanc. peskin answered to criticism that he's stood in the way of new housing construction. >> i have actually authorized in my 24 years since i was first elected, more housing than all of the other candidates combined, all over this city. but we did it with neighborhoods. when we rezoned the eastern neighborhoods, we went to those neighborhoods and those leaders and asked them what they wanted, and they wanted parks and playgrounds for their kids. and child care centers. and we built that into

time in prison. our team covered the day. those men were exonerated and learning what? >> what did these heroes what did what did these courageous war heroes? what did they do to bring us where we are today? >> the commemoration will begin this morning at 1030. regional medical center in san jose is canceling its plans to close its trauma heart attack and stroke centers. but some community members say the fight for reliable medical care is still not over. regional will change its designation from level two to a level three trauma center, and that still allows for intensive trauma care. it's a potentially life saving victory for east san jose residents. they say the attempt to shut down was a cost cutting measure by the hospital's parent company. >> when a corporation comes in to our community in east san jose makes their profits and then divests life saving care

from our community once they deem that as no longer profitable, we can and we must fight back. >> hca healthcare, which owns regional medical center, says the stroke center will address the needs of 97% of patients. it's also revamping its acute heart attack program to have a cardiologist available 24 hours a day. san jose is now the first in the state to allow the sale of adus. they're the accessory dwelling units seen in many backyards. adus have been a way to raise money or help out a relative, but now they can help people get into affordable homes. a new law passed in january, allowing them to be sold separately from the main house. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has more on the benefits. >> people are surprised at how small of a footprint you actually need for an adu. >> dan kiernan built his 500 square foot adu behind his five

bedroom home back in 2021. he says. everyone who's rented his place loves it for the space high ceilings, 15ft. >> there's a contained bedroom, kitchen, bathroom now, instead of renting out the adu, he can actually sell it like a condo. it opens the door for homeownership. >> we are in a huge housing shortage all over california. we are trying to desperately catch up and find a way to build more housing. >> right now, many cities allow for adus, which are a lot like backyard cottages or in-law units or casitas. san jose has received twice as many adu applications as oakland, and four times as many as san francisco. in january, assemblyman phil ting's bill ab 1033 became law allowing property owners to sell their adus like condominiums separate from their home. cities have to go one step further and adopt an ordinance to allow for that law to take effect. other cities like berkeley are trying to adopt the ordinance, but san

jose stepped up first this week. >> san jose became the first city in california to implement ab 1033. >> san jose mayor matt mehan says this is a big win for his city. >> it was create accessible homeownership, particularly for young people, for people aging out of their larger homes on a fixed income. and it becomes a source of revenue. >> mayor mehan says. this couldn't have come at a better time. >> silicon valley has added about six jobs for every one new home that we've built, and the new homes that we are building are slow to build and they're expensive. and this creates a much more accessible form of home ownership. >> kiernan already has a buyer in mind for his adu. his in-laws in sacramento have been wanting to move to the bay area for a while now, but haven't been able to afford it, he says. now they can buy a home in san jose and be super close to family in san jose. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> all right, who's hungry for a sandwich? ike's love and sandwiches celebrated the opening of its 100th store here

this is all due to fires to our south. we'll take it to sequoia national forest outside of bakersfield. earlier this week we had a couple of thunderstorms. lightning sparked some new fires. so currently cal fire is battling a couple of fires in the national forest. but where high pressure situated over vegas right now that clockwise flow is sending that smoke into the bay area and into parts of northern california. this morning. we will get some stronger winds this afternoon that pushes the smoke out of here, but for the most part it's remaining elevated above the surface, creating that hazy sunshine. this morning. you look at current air quality right now. good to moderate. and we do expect it to stay in that range over the next 24 hours. let's talk about those winds. they do pick up in intensity as we head deeper into the day this mornin. they're pretty quiet. you saw the flag gently moving along the coast from pacifica pier heading into the afternoon, though those winds do increase, we'll likely see gusts close to 30mph at times a window pretty much starting around lunchtime through the evening along the

separate recalls going on that are impacting the car manufacturer. 54,000 models could have faulty fuel pumps that might cause the vehicle to actually stop moving separately. 12,000 2024 santa fe models are also a part of this recall. a transmission software issue could cause the suv to roll away when parked, and owners should be notified sometime in september. drivers may be responsible for getting a brake at the pump. triple-a says demand is down and gas prices are down nationally, $0.04 in a week. the national average is 350 per gallon. california, of course, has the most expensive gas in the u.s. at 470, and it's even more than that in parts of the bay area. san francisco averages 4.86 per gallon a month ago, it was $5. oakland drivers pay 4.75 on average. right now in san jose, it's down to 4.66 for those who ride public transit. bart is installing the

next batch of its new fare gates. they're designed to deter fare evasion. abc7 news reporter luz pena went to san civic center station, where bart is hoping the new gates will make people pay their share fare of and build a better bay area. >> if you're a frequent bart rider, it doesn't take long to witness people jumping or uh- people trying to squeeze his body through the turnstiles, or i've seen somebody wait for somebody to get in and then piggyback off that entrance. bart says. pre-pandemic numbers project. it was losing tens of millions of dollars because people were finding ways to avoid pain. >> it also bothers me that it's being done. you know, directly in front of bart employees. >> we saw several people jumping over gates. one stopped by a bart police officer right after making it to the other side. we tried speaking to them to understand their point of view. >> you said he doesn't want to speak. >> just two weeks ago, a bart

rider, corazon dandan, was killed when a man pushed her into an oncoming train at the powell station. bart confirmed the suspect had no proof he paid his fare. >> the reality is that people who fare evade not every fare evader commits a crime. but it is not uncommon for us to see that people who have unwanted behavior on bart have fare evaded to get in. >> our abc7 news data team looked into monthly fare evasion citations and found that fare evasions are trending up. bart says they're noticing a decline at the west oakland station, where new gates were installed december of last year. >> the number of entries and exits at west oakland is up 120,000 from the same period of the first six months of 2022. so what? that's telling us is more people are, in fact, tagging in with their clipper card at west oakland than they were before the new gates went in. >> bart's plan is to replicate these gates throughout the system. this week. they're beginning to install the second batch of new gates, this one at the san francisco civic center

area calls for president biden to step aside are growing. some local democrats are making it official. they want the president to pass the torch to another candidate and fear that biden cannot win in november, south bay democratic congresswoman zoe lofgren says her party needs a strong candidate to defeat trump in november. but she says president biden is not that person. lofgren wrote this letter to the president, abc news reports she's the 31st congressional democrat to call on biden to end his campaign. >> i've asked him to step aside for a candidate who would have a better chance of beating donald trump. but in the end, it's president biden's decision. >> north bay congressman jared huffman has also joined the call and signed this letter. new this morning, a congressman from southern california is also calling on president biden to step down. representative mark takano voiced his support for vice president kamala harris to take his place. he stated on

social media, quote, joe, i love and respect you, but the stakes are too high to fail. it's time to pass the torch to kamala. according to abc news, representative takano is the 38th democrat to call on biden to end his campaign. now, the president has been losing momentum since his controversial debate performance three weeks ago. but the question remains who would replace biden? someone we just mentioned, vice president kamala harris, is being floated as the most likely option. abc seven news anchor julian glover has a look at harris's chances. president kamala harris spotted in washington, d.c, friday afternoon with her grand nieces visiting an ice cream shop opened by tyra banks. >> harris ignored questions from reporters asking what she would say to democratic voters. harris on the attack during a rally in fayetteville, north carolina, thursday night, making her case

people. >> i'm julian glover, abc seven news. >> new this morning, former president donald trump and running mate j.d. vance are hitting the campaign trail this weekend. they'll hold their first joint campaign rally today in grand rapids, michigan. it's trump's first campaign rally since he was injured during an assassination attempt in pennsylvania exactly one week ago. michigan is expected to be a crucial swing state that could determine the outcome of the election. now, the department of homeland security failed to meet their deadline to provide documents about the assassination attempt on former president trump in response, a congressional committee has issued a subpoena demanding more information. the republican led committee wants information about the security efforts during trump's rally, the committee chair, mark green, had requested those documents one day after the shooting. now we're learning more about the moments leading up to the shooting. it suggests there were

opportunities to stop the accused gunman, thomas crooks. but the information does not reveal whether concerns about him were actually sent to the secret service. newly obtained photos show him looking at news feeds before the incident happened. crooks was first spotted by a local swat team member at 5:10 p.m. last saturday. four minutes later, his photo was taken by a member of the sniper team at 532. a sniper noticed crooks had a rangefinder. nine minutes later, he was spotted, quote, lurking around a building. at about 6 p.m, police requested more information about his whereabouts and police began to move in on him. six minutes later. now, at 612 that evening, shots were fired and police confirmed crooks dead just after 630. now we also got word longtime u.s. representative sheila jackson lee has died. the texas congresswoman had pancreatic cancer. she represented her houston based district since 1995. the democrat led efforts to protect

headline today look at the coast winds in excess of 40mph at times for areas away from the coast, the winds more between 20 and 30mph. but that will bring cooler weather today, highs in our microclimates. we're about ten degrees cooler today in the south bay compared to yesterday, 70s and 80s. for daytime highs along the peninsula. 79 in redwood city, we'll hit about 74. in millbrae, 60s for pacifica and half moon bay across the city today. yesterday we were in the 70s. today will mainly be in the 60s with those gusty winds this afternoon in the north bay. it's warm with some pockets of hotter weather around calistoga. santa rosa in the 90s, but were 87. in novato, 86 in san rafael. looking lovely along the coast, 76 in sausalito in the east bay today. sunshine mild, not as warm as yesterday. yesterday we're in the 80s and 90s. today we're about 74. in oakland, 76 in fremont, 78 in orinda and inland. today will be in the mid 80s to the mid 90s, which is actually about ten degrees cooler compared to yesterday. overnight tonight we will see more in the way of fog.
