of canceled flights at bay area airports. abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> a day of honor and remembrance to mark a moment many thought would never come. a special ceremony to correct a historical wrong while also paying tribute to lives lost. thank you for joining us. i'm zach fuentes in for diane lim. today's ceremony was a commemoration of bravery, sacrifice and injustices. right it at long last and came as we mark 80 years since the port chicago disaster. 320 sailors, many of them black, were killed in an explosion. and in the wake of the blast, more than 250 sailors were unfairly court martialed. they were finally exonerated this week, and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with their families and the navy secretary >> a painful chapter in bay area history remembered on sassoon bay. the port chicago disaster

more than 300 sailors killed after tons of ammunition exploded on a munitions pier. many survivors, most of them black, would later face criminal charges. but on this 80th anniversary, a new, long awaited chapter. >> and there the heading at the top of the page exoneration word carol cherry thought she'd never hear. >> it means vindication. it means honor. >> her late father, cyril, was one of the so-called port chicago 50 who received an exoneration from the navy this week. those sailors who refused to resume their dangerous work of loading ammunition onto ships following the explosion, said safety issues had not been addressed. >> it means so much to know that he had nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to be afraid of, and that he did the right thing. >> back in 1944, the navy called that work stoppage mutiny. hundreds of sailors returned to work, but were convicted of disobeying orders and 50 were jailed and court martialed. >> you really can't take the

racism out of the story out of what happened in back in 1944. and the only reason that these young men were in the positions that they were in is because they were black. if they had been white, things would have unfolded very differently. >> i announced my decision and signed the orders to set aside the court martial results of all 258 sailors convicted nearly 80 years ago, navy secretary carlos del toro, getting emotional when he told the crowd about his choice to exonerate the black sailors. their sacrifice has again once reminded us that we must always do what's right, regardless of circumstances or how difficult it might have been in the past to do so. >> it's mixed feelings, because on the one hand, it took 80 years. >> kelly english says justice has been a long time coming for the sailors. the memory of those who lost their lives etched in this national park service memorial. remembering the disaster orville atkins came from texas to honor her dad, who died here, so i'm grateful for

this day. >> i'm grateful for the exoneration of the men in concord, cornell, bernard. >> abc seven news. >> to the presidential election. the big bandage gone from the ear of former president trump as he hits the campaign trail for his first big rally since last saturday's assassination attempt. but a lot of the focus this weekend is on president joe biden. calls for him to drop out of the race. are growing louder, with prominent bay area democrats backing the effort in front of the white house today, activists belonging to the group pass the torch called on president biden to end his reelection bid and asked the dnc to slow plans to hold an early virtual nomination. here's abc news reporter ed wynn with the defiant message the sitting president is sending in respons. >> as president biden continues to recover from covid in delaware, the calls for him to end his reelection bid continue at least 38 congressional democrats have publicly called on him to step aside, sources tell abc news leaders schumer and jeffries, as well as former

speaker nancy pelosi, have all told the president he will lose to trump and hurt democrats running for congress. congresswoman zoe lofgren of california, a close pelosi ally, one of the latest democrats to call on biden to quit the race, writing in a letter addressed to the president simply put, your candidacy is on a trajectory to lose the white house and potentially impact crucial house and senate races down ballot. our country will pay a dreadful price, senator elizabeth warren, showing support for the president, but suggesting the vice president could lead the ticket, telling msnbc joe biden is our nominee. >> he has a really big decision to make. if president biden decides to step back. we have vice president kamala harris, who is ready to step up to unite the party, to take on donald trump and to win in november. >> but the president releasing a statement saying, i look forward to getting back on the campaign

trail next week, though money could be an issue. on friday, the vice president joined a call with some of the campaign's biggest donors, hoping to restore confidence. but a source on the call tells abc news some donors were furious because they want biden to drop out. meanwhile, donald trump, fresh off the republican national convention, is in grand rapids, michigan, for the first joint campaign event with his running mate, jd vance. >> we are going to take back the white house in a monumental landslide and with your help, we are going to make america great again. >> security tight at today's event, just one week after a gunman shot the former president. and when abc news, washington. >> a live look at sfo where airlines and their passengers are still dealing with the fallout from that global crowdstrike outage, delta has seen the largest number of cancellations and delays today. united, endeavor, air and spirit are also somewhat impacted, but

united said it was expecting to return to near normal operations today. now, as for airports, hartsfield jackson international in atlanta, denver international and chicago o'hare are seeing the worst delays and cancellations locally. most airports appear to have bounced back, but passengers are still affected today. sfo canceled 73 flights and delayed 167 more. >> so our flight today is canceled and they have rebooked us for two days from now, so we're kind of stuck here in san francisco. i tried to get a rental car, but there weren't any available. this is the first time i'm going to be delayed for multiple days. thank you crowdstrike. appreciate it. but anyway, you know, there's nothing nothing i can do. >> yeah. passengers and airlines have their hands tied. as for the other airports, san jose international canceled only eight flights today and dealt with 46 delays. san francisco bay, oakland international airport had just two cancellations and 16 delays. we'll continue to follow this story here on air and online. to

keep up with the latest developments, visit abc7 news.com or download the abc seven bay area app and be sure to enable push alerts. all right, taking a look outside from various vantage points in the bay area, it is a picture perfect day, but it's not as hot here. with us now is abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian. >> not as hot as right zach, we've had a fairly remarkable cool down today. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see the marine layer along the coast there which brought us some cooling during the early morning hours. and that continued throughout the day. right now we're looking at 24 hour temperature change, showing that most bay area locations are anywhere from 8 to 14 degrees cooler than at this time yesterday. that's all across the region. so where we saw triple digits yesterday, right now we're seeing temperature readings of 95 at santa rosa, 93 at saint helena, 95 concord, 91 at danville, 91 at livermore. all of these locations were around 102 to 105. at this time yesterday, and around the bay shoreline where we had upper 80s to near 90 yesterday, only 70 right now.

now that cooldown has been assisted by a vigorous onshore flow of winds, gusting right now up to about 30mph at sfo. as we get into the evening hours, it will continue to be pretty breezy with the cooling onshore flow and a return of the marine layer, so we've got some cool weather ahead during the evening hours and maybe an even cooler day tomorrow. but next week looks like another bit of a blast of heat coming our way. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. >> zach spencer, thanks, we'll see you soon. a san francisco street is being renamed to honor bernal heights man who was shot by vallejo police back in 2020. holly circle and park street is being renamed sean monterrosa boulevard. that's the area where monterrosa grew up and today family and friends held the fourth annual toucans day block party in his honor. they say the event is all about promoting social justice, advocating for change, and remembering monterrosa's legacy. we have books donated by the sf public library, >> so my brother was a firm believer in knowledging up and

reading, and he was an avid reader. so we're giving back to the community. we're giving free books to the community, we're feeding the community, and we're having a bunch of art activations for kids and of, of all ages. and we're going to get into the performances soon. >> monterrosa died after being shot by police in a walgreens parking lot. he was 22 years old. the officer that shot him was originally fired in 2021, but was reinstated to the force last year. and remembrances today for longtime congresswoman sheila jackson lee. she died last night in houston, surrounded by family. earlier this summer, she announced she'd been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. in a statement today, president biden called the 74 year old a towering figure in our politics whose spirit was unbreakable. vice president kamala harris called her a tenacious advocate for justice and tireless fighter. jackson lee was the longest serving democratic congressman. she represented her houston based district since 1995. in the east bay, the group behind the recall of alameda county district attorney pamela price held a

toward emeryville, looking back toward the city, actually from emeryville, 95 right now in santa rosa. but yesterday was up to about 105 there. petaluma 7981 napa mid 90s at fairfield and concord, 91 at livermore. all of those locations had triple digit temperature readings yesterday. these are the forecast headlines. cooler tomorrow. bright skies, mild temperatures, heat wave. though heat returns next week with triple digits in our inland areas. and late next week we'll see some cooling back down to average or even below. in terms of the temperature range. now with heat next week, we have heat alerts that will be in effect as well. from 11 a.m. monday to 11 p.m. wednesday, we'll have a heat advisory in effect for all of the north bay, the interior valley and the valleys and the mountains down in the santa cruz mountains into the santa clara valley. also a heat advisory and excessive heat warning will be in effect for the east bay hills and for the east bay interior mountains, and for the eastern santa clara mountains. back to overnight conditions. as we see a little bit of an increase in low clouds overnight, low temperatures will

be in the upper 50s to about 60. high temperatures tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, mid 70s around the bay, shoreline, inland areas, even cooler than today, mainly mid to upper 80s, but a few locations like antioch and fairfield will top out at about 9091 degrees. and as we look ahead to the accuweather seven day forecast, you can see three consecutive days of pretty hot weather with inland highs monday, tuesday and wednesday at or above 100 degrees. we'll see mid 80s around the bay shoreline, mid to upper 60s on the coast. it starts to cool down a bit next thursday, but the real cooling comes in on friday and saturday, bringing us relief from the triple digit heat. >> team usa basketball with two more exhibition games before olympic competition begins a week from tomorrow. today in london, team usa favored by 43.5 points over south sudan. trampoline dunking. i mean, this should be an olympic sport. that is not easy. all south sudan early though. carlik jones dribble drive past lebron. they take a 14 point lead. remember
