county where a fast moving wildfire is chewing up brush and forcing evacuations tonight. good evening to you. i'm zach fuentes. the wind driven fire has grown to 2500 acres. it's 10% contained. it's burning at the lake in colusa county. border in an area known as grizzly creek. evacuation orders are in effect in both counties. 50 homes are threatened tonight. the fire began earlier this afternoon and quickly grew out of control. the rapid spread has prompted state firefighters to

call in larger air tankers to perform retardant drops. cal fire says the fire is advancing in a northeast direction, and there are many road closures in effect, including highway 20 at clearlake. clearlake oaks to bear valley road. and of course, the weather is always a concern when we're talking about any wildfire. so abc seven weather anchor spencer christian is here with a look at the conditions and your 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> yeah, zach, you mentioned the smoke is blowing in a northeasterly direction. the weather information is beginning to trickle in from that location. it's about 80 degrees right now. so you can see it's still warm. and winds are gusting up to about 30mph. relative humidity dangerously low, about 21. so those three fire weather factors are at work here at the moment. the smoke is blowing away from the general bay area, but still, of course, that that of course that fire is spreading here in the bay area. our day planner shapes up this way for tomorrow, and we'll see a few clouds developing near the coast of bay overnight. so we'll have a little bit of a marine layer early in the morning. there'll be some lingering low

clouds near the coast and bay temperatures from 60 to about 62 degrees from bay to inland by noon midday. sunny skies inland up to about 78 degrees inland 68 degrees around the bay shoreline. then we get to the 4:00 hour, which is usually the peak of our warming. during the afternoon, upper 80s inland, low 70s around the bay, mild to warm conditions, and at 7 p.m. we'll see the temperatures beginning to taper off just a little bit as fog develops at the coast. low 80s inland, upper 60s near the bay, and upper 50s at the coast. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. >> zach, we'll see you shortly. spencer. thank you. and happening now. p-g-and-e's turned off power to a few hundred customers in eastern alameda and contra costa counties. the psps is indicated on the map in magenta. there it's to prevent wildfires. on its website, pg and e says it plans to restore the electricity at around noon tomorrow. former president trump hit the campaign trail today with his vice president pick, jd vance. their first event together since the republican national convention. meanwhile, president biden

remains in delaware recovering from covid. he's vowing to stay in the race as democrats grapple with what to do next. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> just one week after an assassination attempt, during a campaign rally in butler, pennsylvania, donald trump back on the campaign trail. i stand before you only by the grace of almighty god, the former president and his new running mate, jd vance, campaigning together for the first time in the key battleground state of michigan. >> what is this campaign about if not restoring the american dream for every child in this country? this is going to be the most important election. >> we cannot let it slip by. >> meanwhile, president biden, vowing to get back on the campaign trail next week despite growing calls for him to step aside. more than three dozen democrats in congress are calling on him to drop out, including zoe lofgren of california, lofgren telling

msnbc, i think kind of a mini primary, maybe a vetting hosted by former presidents, including obama and clinton, would be helpful, sources tell abc news. senate majority leader chuck schumer, house minority leader hakeem jeffries and former house speaker nancy pelosi have all told biden he'll lose to donald trump and drag down democrats in congress. outside the white house, voters, activists and organizers gathered to call on the president to pass the torch. one of the president's closest allies, senator chris of delaware, says biden is listening. >> i think our president is weighing what he should weigh, which is who is the best candidate to win in november. >> time is running short. democrats plan to hold a virtual roll call on the first week of august to nominate biden. once nominated, he could still step aside, but the process becomes more complicated. alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> and as pressure continues to

mount on president biden to step aside. abc news reports. vice president harris had a call with fundraisers urging them to keep making contributions. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live. he spoke with a political expert who says the biden campaign needs to keep a close eye on donations. good evening to you, ryan. >> yeah, zach. good evening. it's one thing to hear other democrats call on the president to step down, but campaigns cost a lot of money, as we know. and if donations start to go down, the president could be in a tough spot. president biden visited the bay area five times in the last year for fundraising trips. experts say this region is full of people who consistently contribute to campaigns. >> this is where there's a lot of wealth and not only a lot of wealth, but a lot of people who are very interested in politics on both sides of the political aisle. >> melissa mickelsen is a professor of political science at menlo college. she says when it comes to funding and donations, it is a crucial part of the campaign. >> running for president is super expensive and you need to raise just enormous amounts of money to be competitive as top

democrats call on the president to drop out of the race, his top donors are also hesitant to keep throwing money towards his reelection. >> abc news says vice president harris spoke with some top donors friday, asking them to keep faith in the campaign. she posted on x saturday afternoon, saying, i see joe biden when the cameras are on and when the cameras are off. joe biden is a leader who fights for the american people. but according to the report, the donors were expecting the call to be about replacing the president. >> you're going to expect each candidate to raise somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion. and so if you have trouble fundraising, you know that that can be a huge hindrance to your ability to win. >> abc news also says former president bill clinton and former secretary of state hillary clinton have been encouraging donors to back the president in san francisco saturday assembly member phil ting said the donors have every right to withhold their money if they want. >> president biden has received record support, record funding, and i think that the donors who

are supporting the democratic party, supporting president biden, they have every right to express, you know, their feelings, their opinions. >> professor mickelson says the president's campaign has already raised a lot of money. she says the issue is not running out of money. it's maintaining the support. up to november, she expects the big money donors to still fund his campaign if he stays in the race. >> they want the biden or whoever they want the democrats to win. they're trying to use their money as a nudge to maybe change who's the standard bearer, but they're not going to withhold donations. it's unlikely in this situation. >> we did reach out to some of the bay area's top donors who contributed to the campaign. we're waiting to hear back. a spokesperson for donor gretchen sisson did get back to me, but said she's not available to comment. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you. and november is fast approaching. if you're looking for a job and a way to get involved in the election, usps has opportunities near you. there's two job fairs that are coming up in the bay area, so

you can find out more in person. one is in san jose on wednesday. the other is in san francisco on thursday. the postal service needs help with processing the many mail in ballots to come, plus a range of other positions with varying salaries and benefits included in developing news with the global outage caused by a software update from cybersecurity firm crowdstrike, microsoft says 8.5 million windows devices were impacted by that outage that hit 9-1-1 service hospitals and scores of businesses, some of which are still recovering. and at airports, more than 8000 flights were delayed today, and over 2700 were canceled. that chaos included our local airports and right now most airports appear to have bounced back. but passengers are still affected. today, sfo canceled more than 80 flights and delayed over 300 more. >> so our flight today is canceled and they have rebooked us for two days from now, so we're kind of stuck here in san francisco. i tried to get a

rental car, but there weren't any available. this is the first time i'm going to be delayed for multiple days. thank you crowdstrike. appreciate it. but anyway, you know, there's nothing nothing i can do. >> oh, man. you can feel this frustration there. as for the other airport, san jose international canceled only nine flights today and dealt with 72 delays. san francisco bay, oakland international airport had just four cancellations and 34 delays. we'll continue to follow this story here on air and online. so to keep up with the latest developments, be sure to visit abc7 news.com or download the abc seven bay area app and enable push alerts in the east bay. a man was shot to death this afternoon in fremont, near the intersection of blaisdell way and nichols avenue. fremont police say while this is an active investigation, there is no immediate threat to the community right now. no arrests have been made, and the victim's name has not been released. and also in fremont tonight, there's a bunch of police activity at a liquor store on lake arrowhead avenue near salt lake drive. there you can see a car has clearly

smashed into the building. we're told police were responding to a report of a shooting when they made the discovery. we'll be sure to stay on that. now, two east bay school board members who sought to ban pride flags from being flown on district property have been recalled. board president ryan jurgensen and trustee linda hurley have been ousted from their seats on the sunol glen unified school district in alameda county. the recall election saw 64% turnout, with 533 of the small district's 828 registered voters casting a ballot. the controversy began in september 2023, when the two sought to change a district rule to allow only the u.s. and california flags be flown on campus. that touched off a recall campaign that accused the two of censorship and bigotry. now, we did reach out to both jorgensen and hurley for comment, but we've not heard back yet. the county board of education is expected to appoint two new trustees to that three member board, and the group behind an effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price took its campaign to the central part of the

county. this morning. recall price. recall price. >> rico. price. recall price. >> the group rallied at hayward city hall. it included alameda county business owners who say they've been seriously impacted by violent crime. they accused the district attorney of failing at her job as the county's prosecutor. supporters of price have said the group is trying to undo the will of the people. they say d.a. price is doing what she was elected to do by the voters, and to reform the county's criminal justice system. still ahead on abc seven news at 11, a prized metal rooster stolen in the south bay. we have an update on this caper. and the rooster's whereabouts. let's just say it's back. and the richmond district was all the rage tonight in san francisco. but there's much more to the night market that's looking to pump life into the city. and a little later, a bay area city is putting pedestrians first as it tries to revive its downtown. but is a street closure really going to help build a

bird is back in front of california home and garden in campbell. police delivered it today saying they tracked it down in downtown san jose. it had been stolen from the store on wednesday. we reported it to you and video showed it being wheeled off in the middle of the day by two people. the owner says it's worth about $5,000, but adds, there's a lot of sentimental value to the community. so many people are happy that that bird is back. all right. in san francisco's road to recovery following the pandemic has been a bumpy one. but looking to build a better bay area and bringing the city back to life, community leaders are eyeing the streets for a solution. today's richmond night market could serve as a

blueprint on how to get it done. abc seven news reporter anser hassan. was there clement street in san francisco's richmond district was packed with kunal, who grew up in these streets, is happy that her neighborhood is getting some love. >> it's like, good to see, like good positive things that like support, like this is what clement is. but there's also new things happening here as well. >> thousands turned out for the richmond district's second summer night market. but beyond the fanfare and food, organizers say there's a strategy at play. >> our theory, our premise is that the road to san francisco's recovery is actually through events and through the streets. >> many yekutiel is executive director of civic joy fund, a nonprofit working to revitalize san francisco. he's also owner of the popular manny's cafe, which hosts political forums. the group is putting $100,000 towards eight night markets, an investment he believes that will pay off big. >> the goal is to have san francisco become the night market city, and we're going to get there in the next few

months. >> what i've heard time and time again is that people want clean and safe streets, and that is what san francisco needs to deliver, not just some time, but really all the time. >> san francisco supervisor connie chan says what the night market shows is that san francisco streets can be safe and clean. she hopes it will encourage small businesses to take more risks. >> merchants feel more confident about opening their shop into the later hours, because they can see a crowd like this as possible. and so we can see that month by month we're making progress and we're not giving up. >> organizers say they're also trying to be strategic, trying to showcase businesses in the neighborhood. the richmond night market is anchored by the four star theater inside a record store, food and free movie shorts playing for those who come. >> so the night market is just a fantastic way for people to come in and see how it's been renovated. what we've added to it. >> organizers say the large crowds prove san francisco is responding in san francisco, anser hassan abc seven news.

>> and happening tomorrow, embarcadero plaza in san francisco is going to transform into a huge dance party, a free rave called back to basics is set for tomorrow afternoon. the headliner is dj sasha, robot. it starts at 2 p.m. and is supposed to end at 6 p.m. san francisco held a rave last month at civic center plaza, but you needed a ticket to get in. about 25,000 people showed up for that event that they had to pay for. so we'll see what this turnout is. all right. sfmta is shutting down the twin peaks tunnel for some much needed repairs. this weekend. bus shuttles are running on the k, l, and m lines so crews can work on the tunnel there. it's the second of three closures this summer. an inspection last april showed the muni tunnel is safe, but some areas are in need of immediate upgrades and fixes, so crews are going to be in there today and tomorrow. but the next closure in late august will take eight days, so that's happening in august. let's focus a little more on the present with spencer christian. i'm looking forward to tomorrow. yes, it's the rest of the week or a good part of the week that i'm not so excited

about. >> spencer, you took a sneak peek at my forecast, right? it's going to cool down again. some some more tomorrow from today, but then it's going to heat up as we get into early next week. so zach is on top of things here. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image. the high pressure to our east had been in control of our weather during those hot days we've had at the end of the week, that high pressure has been nudged to the east. a little bit by this area of low pressure, which has allowed for the building of a little bit of a marine layer and some cooling onshore winds. and that's why we've had a two day cool down this weekend. but going into next week, things will change. right now we're looking at quite vigorous onshore flow. 42 mile per hour surface winds here in san francisco, 31 mile per hour gusts at oakland, 29 mile per hour gusts at concord. so all around the bay area right now we're feeling the breeze and we're feeling a bit of a cooldown. continuing the 24 hour temperature change shows most locations several degrees cooler than they were at this time. last night, especially over in the inland east bay concord, 16 degrees cooler, livermore 13 degrees cooler. so let's take a view from the exploratorium camera. looking back at a

portion of downtown san francisco, 55 degrees here in the city right now, oakland 59. low to mid 60s at hayward, san jose, redwood city and 55 at half moon bay. i'll step back and give you a good view of this shot from mount tam. looking down onto the bay under the big bright moon. that's a beautiful shot. you can see a little bit of some some shallow low clouds developing, but no significant marine layer yet. 62 degrees up north at santa rosa, 55 at petaluma. mid 60s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. and on we go to the forecast headlines. cooler tomorrow. then even today was with bright skies and mild temperatures. heat returns next week. triple digits inland for the first three days of the week, and then late next week. we expect some cooling with temperatures at or even below average for this time of the year. so here's a look at our heat alerts in the orange area here. this is a heat advisory the advisory and the excessive heat warning will both be in effect from 11 a.m. monday to 11 p.m. wednesday. now, the excessive heat warning is in

effect for the east bay hills and the inland east bay valleys and down into the eastern santa clara hills. in the orange area, we have the heat advisory in effect for all of the north bay, including the north bay hills and the interior valleys. also, the santa cruz mountains and the santa clara valley. so under these excessively hot conditions, just bear in mind that there's an increased chance of heat related illness overnight. we'll see a little bit of a marine layer developin, but it won't cool down much overnight. lows will generally be in the upper 50s to low 60s, so pretty mild overnight. highs tomorrow in the comfort zone. low 60s at the coast, mid 70s around the bay shoreline generally mid to upper 80s inland, although a few spots will top out at or above 90 degrees. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. notice how hot it gets on monday, tuesday and wednesday. inland highs on those three days, ranging from 100 to about 104 degrees. we'll see some mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline, perhaps even near 90 in a few spots. then on thursday, the cooling begins,

to mark a moment many thought would never come. the special ceremony to correct a historical wrong while also paying tribute to lives lost. it came as we mark 80 years since the port chicago disaster, 320 sailors, many of them black, were killed in an explosion. and in the wake of the blast, more than 250 sailors were unfairly court martialed. they were finally exonerated this week. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with their families and the navy secretary. >> a painful chapter in bay area history remembered on sassoon bay. the port chicago disaster. more than 300 sailors killed after tons of ammunition exploded on a munitions pier.

many survivors, most of them black, would later face criminal charges. but on this 80th anniversary, a new long awaited chapter. >> and there the heading at the top of the page exoneration a word carol cherry thought she'd never hear. >> it means vindication. it means honor. >> her late father, cyril, was one of the so-called port chicago 50 who received an exoneration from the navy this week. those sailors who refused to resume their dangerous work of loading ammunition onto ships following the explosion, said safety issues had not been addressed. >> it means so much to know that he had nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to be afraid of, and that he did the right thing. >> back in 1944, the navy called that work stoppage mutiny. hundreds of sailors returned to work, but were convicted of disobeying orders, and 50 were jailed and court martialed. >> you really can't take the racism out of the story, out of what happened in back in 1944, and the only reason that these

young men were in the positions that they were in is because they were black. if they had been white, things would have unfolded very differently. >> i announced my decision and signed the order to set aside the court martial results of all 258 sailors convicted nearly 80 years ago, navy secretary carlos del toro getting emotional when he told the crowd about his choice to exonerate the black sailors. >> their sacrifice has again once reminded us that we must always do what's right, regardless of circumstances or how difficult it might have been in the past to do so. >> it's mixed feelings because on the one hand, it took 80 years. >> kelly english says justice has been a long time coming for the sailors. the memory of those who lost their lives etched in this national park service memorial. remembering the disaster orville atkins came from texas to honor her dad, who died here, so i'm grateful for this day. >> i'm grateful for the exoneration of the men in concord. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven

some success. not everyone likes the way they've gone about it. closing two city blocks to cars. city officials say it's their way of building a better bay area. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez has a look at how it's working, and the controversial move to make that closure permanent. >> it started out as a pilot program after the pandemic, pushing cars away from two city blocks in downtown san mateo and allowing pedestrians to be well in the driver's seat, so to speak. >> it'll be closed the next 3 to 5 years and making the best of it, mackenzie djokovic is with the downtown san mateo association. >> she oversees 550 businesses in the area. about 150 are food related services. most restaurant owners are happy having b street between first

and third avenues. a pedestrian only experience. >> i don't know about everybody, but it's good for us and we like it. we want to keep it. >> local businesses say they have seen fewer drivers speeding on busy third street. >> now you know you have parklets. i have one here. you know the other businesses have parklets on the same street. so it kind of slowed people down. >> but here are the people who don't like the closure. people in cars like delivery truck drivers who have to park several blocks away to then haul their goods. carolina vale of los amigos imports, says her 29 year family owned business has suffered about 45. >> we've lost a lot of customers because customers they don't like to park far away, the owner of sage mediterranean wrote us an email stating some of the concerns from local businesses include lack of parking, operational challenges, lack of business and safety. >> he also says his takeout

business has tanked because parking is nearly impossible to find. san mateo seems to be working on these issues by installing more of these green zones, with a limit of 24 minutes to allow for a quick pickup, the city council also recently approved designated parking spots for food delivery services like uber eats. that still doesn't help valet and the nearby shoe store. >> and unfortunately, restaurants have more say than the mom and pop shops. and there's only two businesses that have been here for over 25 years, and we have no word and say we asked san mateo's mayor how the city expects to help them. >> let's talk about shoe repair, right? okay, so isn't he. isn't it better if he relocated somewhere else? i mean, how do you bring business to his place? >> well, what happens and what is already happening is the people who come wandering down the mall and they go, i didn't even know there was a shoe repair store in san mateo. wow. i'm going to come back. >> we'll check back in a few

months to see if his situation has improved. >> we went from primarily a 9 to 5 economy to a afternoon lunch to evening economy, while the downtown area seems to be flourishing, it's the weekends that tend to bring the bulk of their clientele, like during the weekend. >> oh my god, you're going to see a lot of younger generation. they walk around, oh my god, feel. so i feel every business got a busy city. >> officials told us they're working to bolster the number of visitors during the week by offering something that other bay area cities struggle with. >> the new businesses that i've seen coming in, i always ask them, you know, what brought you to downtown san mateo? and what i've heard over and over again is we feel really safe here. we've heard really good things about the safety. so happy. >> happy to report that san mateo city officials are also counting on a number of new housing developments nearby to help bring more business to the downtown area. lyanne melendez

abc seven news. >> spencer christian is here now with weather. we've had just a nice weekend so far. >> we have really nice but the heat is coming back. as you probably know, so let's be prepared. here's a look at the heat alerts coming our way. from 11 a.m. monday to 11 p.m. wednesday, we'll have a heat advisory in effect. those are the areas covered in the orange there the santa cruz mountains, santa clara valley, the north bay mountains and inland valleys, and then under the red. it's an excessive heat warning. that's for the east bay hills, the east bay interior valleys, and the santa clara, eastern santa clara hills and mountains. so bear that bear in mind that under these excessively hot conditions, there is an increased risk of heat related illness. for tomorrow, we'll be looking at a day that's nice and pleasant, even cooler than today was with inland highs mainly in the mid to upper 80s. a couple of locations may hit 90 degrees 70 around the bay shoreline, and as we look ahead to the accuweather seven day forecast, you see the heat coming our way on monday, tuesday and wednesday. all three days will feature triple digit high
