biden remains in delaware recovering from covid. he is vowing to stay in the race as democrats grapple with what to do next. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> former president donald trump returned to the campaign trail just one week after an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in butler, pennsylvania. trump and his new running mate, jd vance, campaigning together for the first time in the key battleground state of michigan, the former president referencing last week's shooting in the first few minutes of the rally. >> i stand before you only by the grace of almighty god. >> meanwhile, president biden, vowing to get back on the campaign trail next week despite growing calls for him to step aside more than three dozen democrats in congress are calling on him to drop out. senators like elizabeth warren are still backing biden, but leaving the door open for an alternative. >> if president biden decides to

step back. we have vice president kamala harris, who is ready to step up to unite the party to take on donald trump and to win. in november, one of the president's closest allies, senator chris of delaware, says biden is listening. >> i think our president is weighing what he should weigh, which is who is the best candidate to win in november. >> alison kosik, abc news, new york we're also learning new details from former president trump about his security on the day of the shooting. >> in an interview with fox news, he said no one warned him of any danger. >> no one told you not to take the stage? >> no, nobody mentioned it. nobody said there was a problem and i would have waited for 15. they could have said, let's wait for 15 minutes, 20 minutes, five minutes, something nobody said. i think that was a mistake. how did somebody get on that roof and why wasn't he reported?

because people saw that he was on the roof. i mean, you had uh- trumpers screaming, the woman in the red in the red shirt. she was screaming, there's a man on the roof. and then other people said, there's a man on the roof who's got a gun. and that was quite a bit before i walked onto the stage. >> the washington post reporting that top officials at the secret service repeatedly rejected requests from trump's security detail for more manpower and gear at events before the attempted assassination. a secret service spokesperson admitted in a statement that the agency has denied trump's request for federal resources in the last two years. now, this comes as pressure continues to push on president biden to step aside. abc news reports. vice president kamala harris had a call with fundraisers and urged them to keep making contributions. here's abc seven news reporter ryan curry. >> president biden visited the bay area five times in the last year for fundraising trips.

experts say this region is full of people who consistently contribute to campaigns. >> this is where there's a lot of wealth and not only a lot of wealth, but a lot of people who are very interested in politics on both sides of the political aisle. >> melissa mickelsen is a professor of political science at menlo college. she says when it comes to funding and donations, it is a crucial part of the campaign. >> running for president is super expensive and you need to raise just enormous amounts of money to be competitive as top democrats call on the president to drop out of the race, his top donors are also hesitant to keep throwing money towards his reelection. >> abc news says vice president harris spoke with some top donors friday, asking them to keep faith in the campaign. she posted on x saturday afternoon, saying, i see joe biden when the cameras are on and when the cameras are off. joe biden is a leader who fights for the american people. but according to the report, the donors were expecting the call to be about replacing the president. >> you're going to expect each candidate to raise somewhere in

the neighborhood of $1 billion. and so if you have trouble fundraising, you know that that can be a huge hindrance to your ability to win. >> abc news also says former president bill clinton and former secretary of state hillary clinton have been encouraging donors to back the president in san francisco saturday assembly member phil ting said the donors have every right to withhold their money if they want. >> president biden has received record support, record funding, and i think that the donors who are supporting the democratic party, supporting president biden, they have every right to express, you know, their feelings, their opinions. >> professor mickelson says the president's campaign has already raised a lot of money. she says the issue is not running out of money. it's maintaining the support. up to november, she expects the big money donors to still fund his campaign if he stays in the race. >> they want the biden or whoever they want the democrats to win. they're trying to use their money as a nudge to maybe change who's the standard bearer, but they're not going to withhold donations. it's

unlikely in this situation. >> ryan curry abc seven news well, despite donor concerns, the biden campaign told cnn july was the best start to any month ever for grassroots fundraising, with several donors maxing out. >> federal election commission data show. in june, the campaign spent $59 million and went into july with $96 million left president trump's campaign, meanwhile, spent about $10 million, leaving $128 million left. now if you're looking for a job and a way to get involved in the election, usps has opportunities near you. two job fairs are coming up in the bay area so you can find out more in person. one is in san jose on wednesday, the other is in san francisco on thursday. you see the addresses posted on your screen. the postal service needs help with processing the many mail ballots to come in, plus a range of other positions with varying salaries and benefits that are included in the east

bay. a man was shot to death yesterday afternoon in fremont, near the intersection of blaisdell way and nichols avenue. fremont police say while this is an active investigation, there is no immediate threat to the community, no arrests have been made, and the victim's name has not been released. also last night in fremont, there was a lot of police activity at a liquor store on lake arrowhead avenue right near salt lake drive. you can see a car has clearly smashed into the building there. we are told. police were responding to a report of a shooting when they made the discovery. now to developing news along the border of colusa and lake counties. this wind driven fire has grown now to 2500 acres. and this morning it's 10% contained. it began yesterday afternoon, burning in an area known as grizzly creek. evacuation orders are in effect in both counties. 50 homes are currently threatened, and that rapid spread has prompted state

firefighters to call in larger air tankers to perform retardant drops. cal fire says the fire is advancing in a northeast direction. many road closures are in effect, including highway 20 at clearlake oaks to bear valley road. well, new rules about landscaping may be coming to california in an effort to prevent wildfires. the state is set to revise what qualifies as defensible space. right now, this means clearing the brush around a home, but going forward, it's going to mean no plants within five feet of a house. a former cal fire official explains the reasoning. >> defensible space is not new to californians. what is new is this first five feet, again, based on our research that is critically important to the survivability of homes, that's no fillled uh- fences attaching to the side of the house. uh- no bushes, no wood mulch and other combustible items. >> the rules are still being

firm crowdstrike microsoft says 8.5 million windows devices were impacted by this outage. they say that's only 1% of their overall usage, but it hit 911

services, hospitals and scores of businesses, some of which are still recovering this morning. so our airports, more than 8000 flights were delayed yesterday and more than 2700 were canceled. that chaos included our local airports right now, most airports appear to have bounced back, but passengers are still affected since midnight, sfo has canceled more than 50 flights and delayed 28 more. >> so our flight today is canceled and they have rebooked us for two days from now, so we're kind of stuck here in san francisco. i tried to get a rental car, but there weren't any available. this is the first time i'm going to be delayed for multiple days. thank you crowdstrike. appreciate it. but anyway, you know, there's nothing, nothing i can do. >> as for the other airports, san jose international canceled nine flights as of this morning and dealt with 72 delays. san francisco bay oakland international airport had four

included alameda county business owners who say they have been seriously impacted by violent crime. they accused the da of failing at her job as the county's prosecutor. supporters of price, though, have said the group is trying to undo the will of the people they say da price is doing what she was elected to do by the voters, and to reform the county's criminal justice system. two east bay school board members who sought to ban pride flags from being flown on district property have been recalled. board president ryan jergenson and trustee linda hurley have been ousted from their seats on the board for the sunol glen unified school district. the recall election saw 64% turnout, with more than 530 of the small district's 828 registered voters casting a ballot. the controversy began last september, when the two sought to change a district rule to allow only the u.s. and california flags to be flown on campus. now, that touched off a

recall campaign that accused the two of censorship and bigotry. we've reached out to both parties for comment, but haven't heard back. a bay area company is working on using ai to help fight cancer. abc7 got a look inside the gladstone institutes here in san francisco. teams there are using ai to understand cancer cells. the president of the research institute says they are confident this approach will save lives. >> we'll be able to take somebody's cancer that so far has been untreatable and be able to engineer their own immune cells in ways that would specifically kill their cancer cell. >> the main focus for this research is skin and rectal cancer. researchers hope they can design new types of clinical trials for incurable cancers over a five year period. as you head out the door this morning,

sfmta has shut down the twin peaks tunnel for some much needed repairs this weekend. bus shuttles are running on the k, l, and m lines so crews can work on the tunnel. it's the second of three closures expected this summer. an inspection last april showed the muni tunnel is safe, but some areas are in need of immediate upgrades and fixes. crews will wrap up their work later today. another closure is scheduled for late next month and will last eight days. san francisco's road to recovery following the pandemic has been a bumpy one, but looking to build a better bay area and bring the city back to life, community leaders are eyeing the streets for a solution. last night's richmond night market could serve as a blueprint on how to get it done. abc7 news reporter anser hassan was there >> clement street in san francisco's richmond district was packed. abril canul, who grew up in these streets, is happy that her neighborhood is getting some love.

>> it's like good to see, like good positive things that like support, like this is what clement is. but there's also new things happening here as well. >> thousands turned out for the richmond district's second summer night market. but beyond the fanfare and food, organizers say there's a strategy at play. >> our theory, our premise is that the road to san francisco's recovery is actually through events and through the streets. >> many yekutiel is executive director of civic joy fund, a nonprofit working to revitalize san francisco. he's also owner of the popular manny's cafe, which hosts political forums. the group is putting $100,000 towards eight night markets, an investment he believes that will pay off big. >> the goal is to have san francisco become the night market city, and we're going to get there in the next few months. >> what i've heard time and time again is that people want clean and safe streets, and that is what san francisco needs to deliver, not just some time, but really all the time. >> san francisco supervisor connie chan says, what the night market shows is that san francisco's streets can be safe

station. former black panther party chairwoman elaine brown brought it to life. she was the first and only woman to lead the black panther party. the organization was founded in oakland in 1966, dedicated to fighting for housing, health care, food, employment, and education for the black community. there are 79 units in the five story building, all units will not only be affordable, but specifically for people with very low or extremely low incomes. so far, more than 7000 people have already applied to live there. >> i hope that this building represents the power of the people bringing back our our dedication and saying to each other, power, power to the people. >> brown hopes the building will carry on the black panthers legacy and be a model for others in oakland and other cities. well, starbucks and mercedes-benz are teaming up to install ev chargers along the west coast. the company is

planning to install these chargers at 100 different starbucks locations. the network will run along i-5 from san diego to the starbucks headquarters in seattle. it's part of a $1 billion project announced by mercedes last year. there are plans to expand the chargers to starbucks on the east coast. a momentous moment in space exploration. we're looking back at the apollo 11 mission yesterday marked 55 years since man's arrival to the lunar surface, pilot buzz aldrin successfully landed the module on july 20th. in 1969, six hours after that landing, neil armstrong took his first steps on the moon's surface. it was a win for the country in the space race and, of course, a big step for the human race still to come this morning, a day of honor and remembrance and correcting a historical wrong. we'll take you to that special ceremony for the anniversary of the port chicago

came as we marked 80 years since the port chicago disaster, 320 sailors, many of them black, were killed in an explosion. and in the wake of the blast, more than 250 sailors were unfairly court martialed. they were finally exonerated this week. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with their families and the navy's secretary. >> a painful chapter in bay area history remembered on suisun bay. the port chicago disaster. more than 300 sailors killed after tons of ammunition exploded on a munitions pier. many survivors, most of them black, would later face criminal charges. but on this 80th anniversary, a new long awaited chapter. >> and there the heading at the top of the page exoneration word carol cherry thought she'd never hear. >> it means vindication. it

means honor. >> her late father, cyril, was one of the so-called port chicago 50 who received an exoneration from the navy this week. those sailors who refused to resume their dangerous work of loading ammunition onto ships following the explosion, said safety issues had not been addressed. >> it means so much to know that he had nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to be afraid of, and that he did the right thing. >> back in 1944, the navy called that work stoppage mutiny. hundreds of sailors returned to work, but were convicted of disobeying orders, and 50 were jailed and court martialed. >> you really can't take the racism out of the story, out of what happened in back in 1944. and the only reason that these young men were in the positions that they were in is because they were black. if they had been white, things would have unfolded very differently. >> i announced my decision and signed the orders to set aside the court martial results of all 258 sailors convicted nearly 80 years ago, navy secretary carlos del toro, getting emotional when he told the crowd about his

choice to exonerate the black sailors. their sacrifice has again once reminded us that we must always do what's right, regardless of circumstances or how difficult it might have been in the past to do so. >> it's mixed feelings, because on the one hand, it took 80 years. >> kelly english says justice has been a long time coming for the sailors. the memory of those who lost their lives etched in this national park service memorial. remembering the disaster orville atkins came from texas to honor her dad, who died here, so i'm grateful for this day. >> i'm grateful for the exoneration of the men in concord, cornell, bernard. >> abc seven news. >> a san francisco street is being renamed to honor bernal heights man who was shot and killed by vallejo police in 2020. holy circle and park street is being renamed sean monterrosa boulevard. that's the area where monterrosa grew up. monterrosa died after being shot

benjamin netanyahu tonight saying it's clear to israel's enemies that there is no place that the long arm of the state of israel will not reach. the houthis saying israel struck oil and electricity infrastructure, killing civilians. and tonight, vowing a response, saying they will not hesitate to strike back. hezbollah is saying that israel's strikes herald a dangerous new phase, even as ceasefire and hostage talks top the agenda as netanyahu heads to the us next week. britt clennett abc news, jerusalem. >> new protests in israel ahead of prime minister benjamin netanyahu's upcoming trip to the us. family and supporters of israeli hostages taken to gaza are calling on the israeli leader to reach a deal and bring their loved ones home. >> prime minister netanyahu is supposed to go to the united states to speak in the congress, and we think that he should go there only after we come to agreement and a deal to bring them home. and until this is not

while they're having some success. not everyone likes the way they've gone about it. closing two city blocks to cars and city officials say it's their way of building a better bay area. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez has the story. >> it started out as a pilot program after the pandemic, pushing cars away from two city blocks in downtown san mateo and allowing pedestrians to be well in the driver's seat, so to speak. >> it'll be closed the next 3 to 5 years and making the best of it. mackenzie jakobek is with the downtown san mateo association. >> she oversees 550 businesses in the area about 150 are food related services. most restaurant owners are happy having b street between first and third avenues, a pedestrian only experience. >> i don't know about everybody, but it's good for us and we like it. we want to keep it local businesses say they have seen fewer drivers speeding on busy

third street. >> now you know you have parklets. i have one here. you know the other businesses have parklets on the same street. so it kind of slowed people down. but here are the people who don't like the closure. >> people in cars like delivery truck drivers who have to park several blocks away to then haul their goods. carolina vale of los amigos imports says her 29 year family owned business has suffered about 45. >> we've lost a lot of customers because customers they don't like to park far away, the owner of sage mediterranean wrote us an email stating some of the concerns from local businesses include lack of parking, operational challenges, lack of business and safety. >> he also says his takeout business has tanked because parking is nearly impossible to find. san mateo seems to be working on these issues by installing more of these green zones with a limit of 24 minutes

to allow for a quick pickup. the city council also recently approved designated parking spots for food delivery services like uber eats that still doesn't help bay and the nearby shoe store. >> and unfortunately, restaurants have more say than the mom and pop shops, and there's only two businesses that have been here for over 25 years, and we have no word and say we asked san mateo's mayor how the city expects to help them. >> let's talk about shoe repair. right. okay. so isn't the isn't it better if he relocated somewhere else? i mean, how do you bring business to his place? >> well, what happens and what is already happening is the people who come wandering down the mall and they go, i didn't even know there was a shoe repair store in san mateo. wow. i'm going to come back. >> we'll check back in a few months to see if his situation has improved. >> we went from primarily a 9 to 5 economy to a afternoon lunch

to evening economy, while the downtown area seems to be flourishing, it's the weekends that tend to bring the bulk of their clientele, like during the weekend. >> oh my god, you're going to see a lot of younger generation. they walk around, oh my god, feel. so i feel every business got a busy city. >> officials told us they're working to bolster the number of visitors during the week by offering something that other bay area cities struggle with. >> the new businesses that i've seen coming in, i always ask them, you know, what brought you to downtown san mateo? and what i've heard over and over again is we feel really safe here. we've heard really good things about the safety. so happy. >> happy to report that san mateo city officials are also counting on a number of new housing developments nearby to help bring more business to the downtown area. lyanne melendez abc seven news. >> to a live look outside. how's it look, andrew? hey, stephanie. >> good morning. quite foggy across the golden gate bridge this morning. some coastal

immune once again to this, but inland will have days where temperatures are above 100 degrees. and then, as we highlight next weekend, a significant cooldown is coming. let's talk about the winds today. they are pretty active this morning, especially through the city and the delta right now, gusting well over 30mph. they stay pretty active all day long. it's not until after the sun goes down. the winds relax overnight tonight and the winds are a lot weaker tomorrow. your weather wellness today. good to moderate air quality. pollen levels are low. the uv index today is a nine that is very high. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. this area of low pressure just off the coast is supplying us with the cooler weather today. the proximity between these two features giving us that wind tunnel effect for another afternoon. but tomorrow, this high pressure, this is going to win out. it's going to create a heat dome. it's going to sit on top of us tomorrow and bring us several days of warm to hot temperatures. but today, future weather showing you any cloud cover will break down by about nine. this morning. i think the

coast stays pretty cloudy today. temperatures in there in the 50s and 60s, but away from the coast it is a pleasant afternoon. we'll have highs mainly in the 80s 70s around the bay shorelin. the only fly in the ointment, so to speak, is that the winds are pretty active today. highs around the region. it is cooler than yesterday. 73 in oakland. morning clouds to sun. we'll hit 68 in the city. those winds gusting about 30 35mph through san francisco 79 with lighter winds in san jose, 93. in santa rosa, we'll hit about 75. in santa cruz. now, looking at overnight lows, we will see those winds relax and those overnight lows mainly in the 50s. tomorrow, though, our heat risk does increase to the moderate to major category away from the coast. that's the orange and reds you see on your screen. just keep an eye on yourselves as we have several days of this heat. you want to stay hydrated. i know, i feel like we said this so many times this month. find ways to beat the heat. so look at temperatures by tomorrow afternoon. certainly a lot warmer than today. above average. the hottest day

pound metal bird is now back in front of its california home and garden in campbell. police delivered it saturday, saying they tracked it down in downtown san jose. it had been stolen from the store on wednesday, and video here showed it being wheeled off in the middle of the day by two people. the owner says it's worth about $5,000, but adds there's a lot of sentimental value to the community. glad to see the booster back home well across the pond. competitive cliff divers took part in the red bull cliff diving world series this weekend on northern ireland's causeway coast. take a look. this is the first time the diving world series has been held in northern ireland. athletes had three different spots to dive from which includes that massive cliff you just saw and the world famous causeway coast was featured as a filming location for the popular game of thrones tv series. it's pretty amazing. i'm very scared of heights, so i can do that.
