to golden gate park. abc seven is proud to be a longtime sponsor and our very own dan ashley is live with us this morning at golden gate park and he's joining us with a preview of today's walk. good morning dan. >> uh, good morning stephanie. great to be with you today. and abc7 is such a proud sponsor of this wonderful event. you know, you can have a lot of favorite days of the year christmas, thanksgiving. name your day. this is one of mine. aids walk is such a meaningful event every year that makes such a huge difference. ever since 1987, the first year this event happened in the lives of thousands and thousands of people with hiv and aids and their families and it has helped with research. it has helped to prevent this disease. it has helped to alleviate the suffering of those who have it. so this is a really profoundly important day, which will raise at least $1 million, perhaps even more today, to fund variety of causes that support hiv and aids work in this community. and
9:15 am
all of the money raised here stays here in the bay area. that's why this is so impactful . and we'll be over at robin williams meadow in just a few minutes for the aids walk, and we'll come back live shortly for that. but right now i'm at the national aids memorial just a stone's throw away from the meadow. uh, this is a beautiful, serene place of repose. really in many ways. and reflection to remember those who have been lost, uh, to hiv and aids, and also to honor those who have played an important role in the fight against it. for example, congresswoman nancy pelosi. so this beautiful little stone park, the, uh, national memorial is here to commemorate those we have lost. and i want to introduce right now john cunningham. they're doing a live presentation. and john is the ceo of the national aids more. john great to be with you. great to see you. dan, what an important day today and what a what a profound, impactful day. well, it is it is, you know,

9:22 am
then we're going to have a streaming show over on the abc seven stream from 10 to 1030 as the walk begins in earnest. so it's just a great day. and not only a fun day, but a truly important day in the fight against hiv and aids, which doesn't grab the headlines like it used to. which is a good thing in many ways, because we've come so far and made such great progress. but it's still a real issue in this community that needs all of us to be involved again, thank you guys for this honor. i'm deeply, deeply touched. we'll see you again in a few minutes. stephanie. uh, from robin williams meadow. but for thou, uh, a very honored dan. back to you. dan. >> what a moving tribute. you know, this organization has always been about resiliency and strength and it's so wonderful to see you recognized for your many decades of service to this cause. so thank you for joining us. >> thanks. and we'll see you back to stephanie later in the hour. >> dan, our very own dan ashley with us this morning. well abc seven is a proud sponsor of the aids walk here in san francisco.

through what happens next for either option? >> yeah, it's looking more and more likely that he is going to have to drop out. um, you know, the pressure is really mounting . um, so what that would look like is, uh, his delegates, uh, he has about 4000, almost all of the, the delegates are pledged to him. they would be released if he withdrew from the race. and then the question would be, does he endorse kamala harris, um, or someone else? but most likely, uh, his vice president? um if that were to happen, then , uh, the most beneficial thing for the party would be for everyone to unite behind her. um, he may not endorse, uh, he, um, if he doesn't or, um, you know, if we see another scenario, then we would see an open convention where multiple candidates would be likely to be competing at the convention for those delegates votes. um, if he chooses to stay in the race,
9:35 am
then the democrats are going to have to just move beyond this. and get behind him if they have any chance of winning in november. uh, but that's what we're looking at. we're looking at either an open convention or an endorsement and, you know, party coalescing behind kamala harris, most likely, um, or biden trying to remain in salvage his candidacy. >> so vice president kamala harris is the obvious choice for nominee. now, if that happens, what does that process look like? should we expect her vice presidential pick to be announced at the dnc in august? >> yeah. uh, if she is, uh, the nominee by then, then that would be a logical, uh, event to announce a running mate. um and certainly that could help, you know, if she does become the nominee, that choice of vp, uh, would be made strategically, i think, to try to help broaden her appeal to, uh, more of the electorate. that's the typical thing that we see with running
9:36 am
mates. we didn't see that on the republican side this time because jd vance is, you know, kind of trump doubling down on, um, the, the, you know, his message. but i think we would likely see a candidate meet um with kamala harris that would create a strong, broader, uh, democratic ticket with a better chance for november. >> now we're about a month away from the dnc, and it's no question the democrats will likely be facing a disadvantage here. do you think it's possible for the dems to rebuild around a new nominee in such short order ? >> well, it's certainly possible , but perhaps not likely. you know what we tend to see with the democratic party is we have a lot of different, um, interests, competing interests. you know, it's a big tent party, but what that means is that there are lots of different kind of, you know, factions within the party. and historically, we have seen a lot of kind of infighting. um, and certainly
9:37 am
with this kind of situation where, again, you have some, some democrats who are arguing strongly that if biden steps down, it has to go to harris. she's the vice president. you know, she's she's the heir apparent. and others saying, well, well, we'd like to see more of, uh, contest. um, so it's certainly possible that we could see, uh, a strong coalesce around one candidate, but i would say not likely at this point, we're probably going to see another month of, um, you know, some chaos, some debate, uh, some, some competing action. uh, but then, you know, there will have to be a democratic ticket, um, by the end of august for sure. that certainly being the deadline, we've seen former president trump adapt on key policy issues in recent months on topics like abortion, no tax on tipping and crypto. >> but, you know, if biden does drop out, do you anticipate vp harris, if selected as nominee,
9:38 am
will run on a similar platform to biden's or be forced to adapt on issues like immigration and tax reform? >> i imagine her platform will will remain similar. you know, the democrats are running on biden's record. you know, their policy successes over the last few years. um, but but it will be a new campaign. and of course , she's going to have to address , uh, the contrast, um, between her and the republican candidate. um, i think certainly on issues like reproductive rights. uh, harris has been a very effective, um, uh, you know, a ambassador or speaker to those issues on the democratic side, i think she's more effective about talking about those issues then than we've seen from president biden. um and that is an important issue in many democratic voters minds. uh, and an issue where, you know, public opinion shows that the electorate is much more supportive of reproductive choice and, and freedoms than
9:39 am
the republican party stands. so i think we're going to see a lot of emphasis on issues like that, that the democrats, we'll give them an advantage. >> i do want to talk about the assassination attempt on donald trump for a moment. it certainly was a sad day for our country. and now some analysts are asking what, if any, impact it may have on the ballot come november. trump's speech at the rnc started with a focus on unity, but ended with false claims and what some analysts argue as divisive rhetoric. what impact do you think this could have in key swing states? yeah well, obviously it was a dramatic event. >> it was unexpected. it was, you know, a horrible, undemocratic attack on a political candidate. um, the political effect remains to be seen. we still have several months until november. so so this event that happened a week ago is not likely to be at the top of voters minds in a couple
9:40 am
of months. so it really depends on, you know, how this event becomes a talking point in the campaign or not. what i'm seeing so far is that it has increased the loyalty, uh, and commitment of trump's support voters. but they were already support him. right. so just thinking about it in terms of the political calculus, i'm not sure how many new voters or swing voters it would pull over to his side, especially since we're talking about a decision that won't be made for a couple of months now. if he continues with the divisive rhetoric, we know that that that turns many voters off . obviously, he has strong support from his base within the republican party, but he's not going to be able to win the general election with just his base. he needs to be broadening his message and his appeal to win over some of those independents, moderates and in those targeted states. we're
9:41 am
talking specific about wisconsin, pennsylvania, michigan, um, and a few others. and so that, i think remains to be seen. >> and many analysts argue that was his opportunity at the rnc. we now, you know, trump's advisers have really been working to expand his support bowl beyond his base. you know, we've seen efforts attempting to appeal to suburban women. lara trump speaking at the rnc. we of course, we saw jd vance, his wife usha, and of course, um, his former opponent, nikki haley now endorsing him. what do you think this all means? come november? >> yeah, i think that those those, uh, you know, kind of symbolic attempts to reach out to different, uh, constituents within the republican party may help to bring some of those traditional republicans home to the party. let's remember that both biden and trump are pretty unpopular as candidates, and there are a lot of, uh, republicans even, who didn't
9:42 am
vote for trump in the primary primary and voted for nikki haley or another candidate. so i think her endorsement will definitely help to bring some of those voters back. but there are many, um, again, more moderate republicans who don't like trump in particularly are thinking about the fact that, you know, he's now a convicted felon. and, um, and the divisive rhetoric. so, you know, it it really remains to be seen whether those attempts will be effective. but just putting a speaker on the stage at the national convention in july is not necessarily going to translate into affecting someone's vote in november, unless there is consistent outreach between now and then and melinda before we go, one more question. >> some polls after the republican national convention suggest if biden stays in the race, it would bring down democrats in congress. that's certainly the fear among the party, given what we know now, what do you expect the long term impact would be right?
9:43 am
>> well, that is certainly a big concern and a big reason behind this mounting pressure on biden to step down from this race. uh the, uh, contest for control of the house and senate is very close. um right now, republicans have control of the house. democrats have a one, uh, seat advantage in, um, in the senate. and so democrats are very concerned about a republican, potentially a republican, white house and both houses of congress. that would certainly give, uh, trump much more power to push through the, um, his political agenda, which what we've seen, you know, is, is includes some pretty radical, um, uh, proposals such as mass deportations. again, this is something that a majority of americans are not in favor of. and so democrats in congress are very concerned about being able to hold on to at least one of
9:44 am
those, uh, chambers in order to provide some checks on the presidency. if trump does win the white house in november, we will see come november. >> well, melinda, that's all the time we have for now. we thank you for joining us this morning. >> all right. thank you for having me. absolutely >> we'll be right back. i'm janelle murray. >> i'm here with the award winning real estate expert suzanne roche. >> now, suzanne, speaking about my own experience. yes. >> it can be so overwhelming when people finally decide to sell their property or start thinking about it, right? >> yes. janelle and that's why i offer a very unique approach utilizing my psychology degree to help those who are feeling stressed out and overwhelm so that we can transfer from a very stressful situation into an easy and positive experience. and people are so stressed out because of the circumstance they're in. yes. and a lot of them feel like they're struggling. maybe they're behind on their property taxes or mortgage payments. i also help those who are downsizing housing, needing to relocate, want to sell a rental property? also maybe a trust sale, as well

9:47 am
co-host this year. this is chance and snowball, two dogs we rescued. uh, they're great dogs. we thought we'd bring them out. here's my wife, angela. i'll give you a chance. uh anyway, maybe they'll say something a little later. this is such a great and important day. since 1987. literally thousands of people have gathered here at robin williams meadow and golden gate park to do something that is deeply important and incredibly compassionate, and that is raise money and awareness to help alleviate the suffering of those who are living with hiv and aids to help prevent this disease. to help raise money for research, to better treat it and prevent it. and of course, over these decades, a enormous progress has been made in terms of research, in terms of treatment, in terms of awareness, to the point where, thank goodness, aids and hiv doesn't make the headlines. it once did because it's not quite, quite the crisis it once was. that said, it's still very much an important issue and one that needs our attention and our
9:48 am
support because there are still people contracting this disease and people living with this disease. so all of these people are going to help raise $1 million today, and we'd love to get your help. go to sf, dot aids, dot sf aids dot net and make a donation. if you can't. all of these people are here for this walk and the quilts are out to commemorate those who have been lost. and i want to introduce two very important people, friends of mine for a long time. uh, this is robert mansfield and isaac rodriguez. they're both board members. guys robert, once again, another great day. why is it so important that we are still here all these years later? >> do you know it's so important to look at this community that's here? this is what the aids walk is all about. everybody comes out here. we all get together. so we kind of done away with some of the big flash and fancy stuff, and we just bring everybody together. this is so important because people really care and we're here. the aids walk money is unrestricted funds, so it's money that can be used where it's most needed. and our beneficiary teams in town really put it to good use.
9:49 am
>> and it really does go to good use. and all the money raised stays right here in our community in the bay area. >> yes, yes, it makes a big difference. and thanks of course, to our big supporters that gilead abc seven v bio-rad we've got a lot of really important support. you know, support from the community here that really helps put this together. >> well, i know abc seven, all of us have been deeply proud to be a part of this event every year. and all the great corporate sponsors who really help make this event happen every year as well. isaac, you know, this every year there's the same level of enthusiasm and all of the money, as i said, raised stays here in this community. give us an idea of what that money goes to do. >> oh, i think one of the biggest things that that money does is it provides, uh, an education and the ability for a lot of these, uh, aids, uh, beneficiaries or the aids organizations to, uh, service the community. uh, one of the things that we were able to do most recently that we're very proud of is we were able to help, uh, fund the golden compass and, uh, so that they
9:50 am
could do research in order to, to get funding so that they could actually be, uh, full fledged and up and running, uh, organization and serve some of the demographics that still need service in our community. >> and it's important to remember, people still need the help and the support. >> they very much do. they very much do. there's a lot of people that are out there that still need it. and there's certain people that are over a certain age that are still living and fighting, you know, to get some of the things that they need. and uh, the programs like the golden compass are exactly what they're there for. and robert aids hiv, not on the in the headlines like it once was. >> which is a good thing because it really isn't quite the crisis it once was, but that hasn't changed the need. >> wonderful thing that's still important is he mentioned the golden compass. that's ward 86. they're aging with hiv program. there weren't services available and there wasn't money available to do something like that until aids. well, well, another great day. >> another great day, great day. thank you both for being here. thank you again. the aids walk will kick off in about ten minutes. we're going to host that show that, uh, that start
