with reaction. caroline >> well, jr. good evening from rehoboth beach, delaware, where president biden remains at his beach home tonight recovering from covid 19. when we got to the beach town about 5:00 this evening, we were met by people who hadn't heard about the news yet that president biden has decided to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, and that he has also decided to endorse his vice president, kamala harris, as the democratic nominee. now, let's show you some video from the last time that we saw president biden. this video was taken last wednesday as he boarded air force one right after he had been diagnosed with covid. that is what brought him here to rehoboth, where, as i mentioned, he has been isolating in his beach home and he has been recovering as pressure has been mounting for him to bow out of the race. now, concerns, of course, we all knew, grew within the democratic party after the june 27th presidential debate against former president donald trump. during his poor performance in that debate and afterward, biden had received growing pressure and criticism from some of his democratic

thoughts. >> he saved american democracy four years ago and he would have saved it again in spite of the trials that we were going through. after the debate, representative desaulnier also adds he's very excited to support kamala harris as the clear choice for president. >> they have worked closely together over the past 30 years, from the california state capitol to their time on opposite sides of capitol hill. >> watch out trump, you've got one very capable, very energized, very, very determined woman who's going to be our nominee. and she's going to go right at you on women's rights on abortion, on those issues that really matter to women across this nation. >> that's current u.s. representative john garamendi, who represents parts of contra costa and solano counties. speaking of his support for harris as the presidential nominee. he also endorses her on

international policy. representative garamendi, who recently revealed he's fighting a rare form of blood cancer, has also worked with harris in many forms since 1991. a bay area representative of the republican national committee says her party has some questions she calls biden's decision today an abrupt turnaround and says republicans want to know exactly what happened. >> as recently as a couple of days ago, the democrats were insisting that joe biden was going to stay in the race and was going nowhere. his family, his immediate staff and supporters were telling us that. so what happened in the last 48 hours to convince him to get out or what? frankly, what threats were made by democrat party leaders because this is a very abrupt turnaround. >> harmeet dhillon also called today's announcement a shocking betrayal to the democrats, who voted for biden in the primary. as you know, kamala harris has been a trailblazer with bay area

roots. she's the first woman, black person or black, of south asian descent to serve as vice president. harris was born in oakland and raised in berkeley. she began her career as the deputy district attorney in alameda county, then became the first black woman to be elected district attorney of san francisco. she served in that office from 2004 to 2010. she was the attorney general of california from 2011 to 2017. referring to herself as a progressive prosecutor, harris represented california as u.s. senator, starting in 2016. one thing we don't know yet who she would pick up as a running mate. if she gets the nomination. san jose state political science professor melinda jackson says the campaign would have to pick someone with wider appeal if she does become the nominee. >> that choice of vp uh- would be made strategically, i think, to try to help broaden her appeal to more of the

electorate. that's the typical thing that we see with running mates. we didn't see that on the republican side this time because j.d. vance is, you know, kind of trump doubling down. >> she also notes that a harris presidential bid would probably center on abortion access, an issue in which she's at direct odds with former president trump. local democrats say they are prepared to kick campaigning into overdrive should harris be officially named the democratic presidential nominee. >> many from san francisco, from the city that she started her political career in. we are speaking from the personal experience of what we've seen her do as an impact on our city. >> a poll released last week by the ap norcs center for public affairs research found that about 6 in 10 democrats believe harris would do a good job in the top spot. we have continuing coverage of this story. check out on content that is on abc seven news.com, and we'll be here a little longer tonight. stay with us through 7:00. we'll

employees and family members gathered to pay tribute this annual event recognizes two brave fallen firefighters, captain matt burton and engineer scott desmond died in 2007 while attempting to rescue an elderly couple from a san pablo house fire. >> we can never do anything to deserve their ultimate gift of service given to us at such great personal cost, and given it such a great cost to their families and their loved ones. this annual observance gives us the opportunity to come together, not so much as individuals, but as a community, as a fire family. join together in common purpose. >> flags are flying at half staff today at all contra costa fire facilities as part of a public memorial on the

peninsula. the san mateo consolidated fire department is investigating the cause of an early morning fire at a strip mall. they posted this video on x. crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames in the fiesta latina market on carey avenue, near norfolk street in san mateo. firefighters were able to knock down the flames and keep them from spreading to other businesses. no injuries were reported. now to developing news along the border of colusa and lake counties. that's northwest of sacramento. this wind driven fire has grown to 2600 acres this afternoon. it's 15% contained. it began yesterday afternoon, burning in an area known as grizzly creek. evacuation orders and warnings are in effect in both counties. route 20 has reopened after an extended closure. at least 50 homes are threatened. many road closures are in effect. fortunately, highway 20 at clear lake oaks to bear valley road has reopened today after an

scores of other businesses, including ours, that are still recovering this weekend. so our airports, some 11,000 flights across the country, were either delayed or canceled yesterday. delta airlines was hardest hit about a quarter of all canceled flights today were operated by delta. happening tomorrow. an exciting return to san jose mineta international, frontier airlines is coming back. it is also launching five daily nonstop routes service to denver and san diego begin tomorrow, and daily nonstop flights to lax, phoenix and las vegas get going in august. the ticketing counter will be in terminal a and an official ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for tomorrow at 10 a.m. join right now by spencer christian, and it's always great to have more airlines right in the area. >> and frontier is coming back. yeah, and the heat wave is coming back. >> oh, i'm not as excited about that. i've been content with our

heat as it is. >> nice segue into the weather, right? yeah, well, it's coming back, so be prepared. >> here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see why we've had this nice little cool down the last couple of days. the high pressure ridge system over to our east had sort of been nudged away by this low pressure system, but now the low is lifting a little bit and the high is going to re-expand and reassert itself over the bay area. but it's nice to have the cooling influence of that little marine layer, which is now thinning out on. we go to a current wind speeds across the bay area. the surface wind speeds up to about 24mph. here in san francisco. over in the fairfield, also 23 mile per hour wind speeds, so near the delta and near the coast, we have our strongest winds right now and it is even cooler now than it was at this time yesterday. yesterday we had quite a cool down from the day before, so we're looking at about a 3 to 5 degree cooldown from this time yesterday. right now, temperature readings are 59. in san francisco, mid 60s at oakland and hayward, mid 70s san jose and redwood city, 57 at half moon bay. there's a little

thin layer of uh- coastal clouds and fog near the golden gate right now, but not much to it. so 87 degrees up north at santa rosa, we have 77 at petaluma, only 70 at napa, low 80s at fairfield and concord, 79 at livermore. a nice comfortable temperature range right now, but that won't last long. these are our forecast headlines. heat wave will be with us for the next three days, with triple digit temperatures inland of course, that means increased fire concerns as well. it's going to be hot, dry with low humidity and occasionally gusty wind. late week cooling will take place though, and temperatures will be at or below average, so that's something to look forward to. but we are going to be under this. these heat alerts from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. wednesday. now, the areas in the orange and north bay inland valleys and the north bay mountains and the santa cruz mountains and the santa clara valley, all under a heat advisory during that time period. an excessive heat warning is in effect for this area. the east bay hills and the inland east bay valleys and down

into the east santa clara hills. so just be prepared for five three days of very hot weather. and of course, the associated heat risks and health risks. looking at the forecast animation for the overnight hours, a little bit of a low cloudiness will develop along the coastline. not exactly a very impressive marine layer, and it'll be gone by mid-morning tomorrow, giving way to sunny skies and quite a warm up coming our way. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. a few low 60s around highs tomorrow mid 60s at the coast, upper 80s in some locations around the bay shoreline. numerous inland areas. upper 90s to about 103 degrees. even hotter on tuesday, which is likely to be the hottest day in the forecast period. and on wednesday, still pretty hot. we start to get a little bit of a cool down on thursday. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and once again, i can't emphasize this enough. it's going to be very hot, especially in our inland areas the next three days. and while there will be triple digits inland, we may see some

temperatures around 90 or even higher around the bay shoreline. but then on thursday, the cool down begins. and by the end of next week, going into the weekend, nice, comfortable weather, much, much cooler and much more pleasant. >> yeah, certainly want to be concerned over fires those first few days. >> absolutely. it will be elevated fire concerns and health concerns because of the exposure to the heat. >> thank you so much. all right. up next we'll hear from abc seven news insider phil ma
