all options. the party chair, jaime harrison, says there will be a transparent and orderly process. the formally, formally choose the 2024 nominee, although it's clear this has struck a chord with democrats. the actblue fundraising group says the harris campaign has raised more than $55 million from smaller donors since the announcement. it's the platform's biggest day of the election cycle, all of this intensifying over the last 24 hours. reports say president biden started firming up his exit plan on saturday night, but notified his team just one minute before sending the official message and then came the swift snowball of momentum towards kamala harris, earning a slew of key endorsements. tonight, abc seven news reporter ryan curry looks at the pattern of first that she could carry right into the oval office. it's a part of my friend kamala harris, her district attorney. >> this was years ago when the

current vice president was starting her political career. she was the first woman to ever serve as district attorney in san francisco. >> well, i've always been a woman. i don't know what to tell you. >> now, the bay area native has a chance to become the first woman, first black woman, and first south asian woman to become president. both president biden and other top democrats have endorsed her to become the party's nominee. >> we're living through history right now as someone who's followed this stuff for a long time, i've never seen anything like these last few weeks, political science professor jason mcdaniel says. >> voters of each party just want to win the election. and with vice president harris, he says the democrats see her as their best chance instead of the current president. >> i think biden's performance at the debate made clear that to a lot of democrats, he was not going to be able to prosecute this campaign. so to speak, against trump and give the party a chance of winning elections. and it became inevitable at the end of this week that he was going to have to step aside. >> now, support is growing for the vice president. >> i have nothing but respect and admiration. and her story is america's story.

democrats. and i think that's the most important thing. >> vice president harris says she plans on winning the nomination in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> the race will only pick up speed from here. tomorrow, we'll get a chance to see vice president harris speak for the first time since biden's exit. she's welcoming the year's ncaa championship teams at 8:30 a.m. our time. then, at almost the same time, here in san francisco, leading city democrats, including mayor london breed, will rally for harris in front of city hall. and wednesday, the process begins. the democratic national committee will hold its next rules meeting to open a framework and selecting a new nominee. no other democrat has announced their plans to run for the nomination. many thought governor gavin newsom could throw his hat in the ring, but earlier today, tweeting his support for his fellow californian writing, quote, tough, fearless, tenacious, with our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is

better to prosecute the case against donald trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than america's vice president, kamala harris. perhaps most notably, nancy pelosi of san francisco has not offered her endorsement for harris in a recent meeting with other california democrats, the former house speaker stressed the need for an open nomination process. we'll have more on pelosi's impact on today's decision coming up in our next half hour tonight. we're also seeing some of the other top rumored democratic nominees instead choose to back harris as the pick for president. here are some of the possible running mates. if harris were to receive the nod. the very popular governor of pennsylvania, josh shapiro, and north carolina's roy cooper both gave their endorsements to harris. today, michigan governor gretchen whitmer joined a campaign call with the harris for president staff, promising her support. other names include arizona senator mark kelly,

kentucky governor andy beshear and illinois governor j.b. pritzker. beshear and pritzker have not publicly endorsed harris. another possible name recently turned independent joe manchin. the west virginia senator is considering reregistering as a democrat so he can seek the bid. manchin left the party in may this morning on abc's this week, he advocated for an open process to replace president biden. so many questions on what will come next to make sense of it all. earlier tonight, i talked with a former legislative strategist and abc seven news insider phil matier. >> most americans weren't happy with the choice between biden and trump, and let's not forget. so the mere idea that there's somebody else in there is going to bring more interest into this race. it's going to revive it. >> abc seven news insider phil matier weighing in on joe biden's decision sunday to drop out of the race for president,

specifically talking vice president and bay area native kamala harris, who's already looking like the likely democratic nominee. >> well, kamala harris walks into this race with about $100 million handed to her from joe biden's campaign because she is on the second part of that ticket. when he leaves, it's now they've refiled it as the harris for president committee. so she walks in with more money than anybody else. >> san jose state university political science lecturer donna crane says a harris ticket would put an immediate focus on two major issues. this change sets up the major issue set contrast to be between immigration and abortion, and she's really well known on both. crane, who spent 26 years in washington, d.c, as a legislative strategist and lobbyist, said there had been recent talk of biden's run affecting other political races. >> i think his candidacy had become politically

unsustainable. uh- my understanding from having talked to a lot of people on the inside of different operations around washington, is that he was getting report after report after report that he was risking sinking other down ballot candidates, a democratic nominee other than harris could happen, but both crane and matier say it would be less likely. >> teare says there are even questions out there as to if biden will be able to finish his current term. >> does joe biden remain as president as well? if he does in fact have a condition that is worsening, how long does he go until possibly kamala harris is actually standing in for as president? as well? let's not rule that out, because from what we've seen in the last couple of weeks, anything can happen in this race. >> the status of the next presidential debate is up for debate tonight. abc's debate is set for tuesday, september 10th with david muir and linsey davis

moderating. but donald trump is now calling for a change of venue, saying it should be moderated by fox news instead of abc as previously agreed. the chair of the republican national committee says once kamala harris or any other candidate becomes the democrats nominee, they're eager for a debate. >> you know, obviously, i'll defer to the president in terms of any of the details that that they want to have with it, but we've made it very clear that we welcome that debate because we want to talk about the contrast between the biden-harris agenda and donald trump's agenda, where he is going to unite america and lead us into a bolder future. >> the biden campaign gave a statement accusing jd vance of backing down from a debate with kamala harris, and it suggests it could be due to their very differing stances on abortion rights. recent polls show kamala harris getting nearly the same amount of support as president biden over donald trump, and ipsos poll taken earlier this

month about a potential matchup between harris and trump shows the two were nearly tied with 42% supporting her and 43% favoring the former president. another poll released by cnn in the first week of july found biden with a 2% lead over trump. if harris were to replace biden in the race, she came out with a slight gain in support with a 49% of the vote to trump's 46. she has been a woman of firsts, and our abc seven originals documentary details her journey from her childhood in berkeley to her formative years at howard university. >> kamala has come from this neighborhood. she knows the steps from below to up high. >> do not be constrained by tradition. do not listen when they say it can't be done. >> she comes at a time when a lot of doors are opening, and she's not afraid to walk through them. >> and then harris's rise to

politics, many serious situations there to a serious situation in the whether there is some serious concern out there, you're right. >> after a very cool, much cooler and more comfortable weekend, we're going back into a heat wave again. so here's what's happening with our weather right now. looking at the satellite radar composite image, the absence of a cooling marine layer there at the coast indicates a warmer weather. hot weather is coming our way. it's still breezy near the coast, but the winds have diminished significantly all across the bay area. from what we saw earlier in the evening. in the 24 hour temperature change is sort of a mixed bag. doesn't really give us a clue to the warm up that's coming our way. so let's take a look at current temperature readings. upper 50s right now at san francisco and oakland. 60 in hayward, mid 60s at san jose and redwood city, 55 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. very, very shallow. little bit of coastal fog there. 62 degrees in santa rosa, 59 at petaluma and napa. we have mid to upper 60s at fairfield, concord and livermore. let's move along and take a look at our forecast headlines. we have hot days ahead. monday through wednesday,

with triple digit temperatures likely in our inland areas. increased fire concerns of course, with the hot weather, the low humidity, the dry fuels and the potential for some gusty winds. but later in the week there will be some cooling and temperatures will return to average and maybe even below average for a while. but right now we're looking at the heat alerts for the bay area from 11 a.m. tomorrow to 11 p.m. wednesday, we'll have heat advisories in effect for virtually all of the north bay, the santa cruz mountains, santa clara valley and an excessive heat warning for the east bay hills and the east bay east bay interior valleys, as well as the east santa clara hill, eastern santa clara hills, now overnight under mainly clear skies, overnight lows will be generally in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. highs tomorrow mid 60s at the coast, upper 80s around the bay shoreline and numerous triple digit readings in our inland areas. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we can expect that triple digit heat to peak on tuesday, but continue into wednesday. finally, we'll see the heat easing on thursday, and a

presidential proportions. president joe biden's earthshaking decision to drop out of the 2024 race. and tonight, there's a clear idea taking shape regarding where the party goes from here, paving the way for a pivotal next few months. it's the first time an incumbent president has dropped out of his late this late in the race. that is, we're getting a look at how the biden campaign suddenly became the harris campaign. abc news reporter perry russom has the latest from washington. >> president biden dropping out of the race for the white house, endorsing his vice president, kamala harris. harris releasing a statement saying her intention is to earn and win this nomination. some democratic lawmakers starting to rally behind harris with their convention weeks away in chicago. >> the delegate i'll be happy to go back, to chicago and support the vice president. >> my choice is vice president harris. >> kamala harris, as our democratic presidential nominee, is going to bring an x factor.

everything he does. those events involved with it. >> well, let's talk about some hot weather coming out. >> it looked a little cool in the park there. >> yeah it did. the cool weather is about to disappear starting tomorrow. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see the absence of a marine layer. so that means an absence of a cooling effect. we have some brisk breezes at the coastline, but they're not really having a cooling effect anywhere except at the coastline. so these are our current temperature readings. upper 50s at oakland and san francisco, 60 at hayward, mid 60s at san jose and redwood city, 55 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. and again, almost nothing in the way of a marine layer or coastal clouds. 62 degrees at santa rosa, petaluma and napa in the upper 50s, 63 at fairfield and upper 60s at concord and livermore. and these are our forecast headlines. hot days lie ahead monday through wednesday with triple digit temperature readings in our inland areas. now, this also, of course, increases the fire concerns. it's going to excuse me. it's going to be very hot. we have very low relative

humidity. thus dry fuels. and occasionally we'll have some gusty winds. so those elements can increase the risk for wildfires later in the week though good news is some cooling is coming our way as temperatures will drop down to or even below average toward the end of the week. meanwhile, though, we have these heat alerts in effect going into effect 11:00 tomorrow morning until 11 p.m. wednesday. now, the areas in orange here, the santa cruz mountains, santa clara valley, all of the north bay are under a heat advisory. the areas in red here under that's the east bay hills, the interior valleys of the east bay and the eastern santa clara hills are under an excessive heat warning, which is more severe. so let's move along here. overnight lows under partly cloudy, mainly clear conditions will be generally in the upper 50s and then highs tomorrow mid 60s at the coast. some upper 80s to near 90 around the bay shoreline. and we'll see lots of triple digit temperature readings in our inland areas. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. now that pattern will continue through wednesday tuesday likely to be the hottest day of those three
