>> plus, the big question if she does become the nominee, that choice of vp uh- would be made strategically. and the big question now who could become the vp's vp? a look at the potential candidates already being rumored as good possibilities. good morning to you. it's monday, july 22nd. >> you know, we have a lot to catch you up on. we're going to start first though, with a check of our forecast. >> yes it was pleasant yesterday. now the heat is back inland. we have heat alerts in effect starting this afternoon. heat advisories in orange. excessive heat warnings in pink. so the excessive heat warnings that include interior portions of contra costa and alameda county. that is where we'll find some of the hottest temperatures throughout the afternoon, but above average across the board today. so the increased risk of heat related illness is with us once again, temperatures right now we have a little bit of cloud cover over the city. we're in the 50s there, but we have clear skies inland. we're currently in the 60s, 60 in concord, 65 in brentwood, 71, though in clear lake, in fact, in our hills in the north bay and the east bay, we're in the

70s and 80s right now. so let's take a look at our inland temperatures today. it will be a lot warmer than yesterday. full sunshine will go into the mid and upper 90s. in fact, some of our hottest spots likely hitting 101 102 later on today. underneath those warnings around the bay shoreline, it will be a warm one, much warmer than yesterday. we'll be going into the mid 80s with full sunshine, but again, the coast immune to any of the intense heat. we'll have a mix of sun and clouds today. a nice day along the coast with temperatures in the mid 60s. check in with amanda and see those drive times this morning. >> hi drew, we're going to take a live look at our overall map. it's really only showing that typical slowdown through the altamont pass. and the good news is other trouble spots this morning. they have since cleared. i'm going to take you to livermore. eastbound 580. before first street, there was a car fire that was fully engulfed, but it has cleared out of the two right lanes. all lanes are now open then to oakland. a two car crash cleared. the roadway is open this is northbound 880 near 23rd avenue. that offramp also open at this time. you can see speeds are approving to 66mph. let's get back to the desk.

>> thanks, amanda. president biden expected to address the nation this week after announcing he's no longer running for reelection and opening the door for the vice president to take his place. he is endorsing oakland's very own kamala harris as the democratic nominee. the decision throwing the party into uncharted waters with just a month to go before the democratic national convention. and it's still unclear whether other candidates are going to challenge the vice president for that nomination. the democratic national committee chair, jaime harrison, says the party will hold a transparent and orderly process to choose their next 20, to choose their 2024 nominee. i should say enthusiasm for harris is growing the actblue fundraising group says the harris campaign has raised more than $55 million from smaller donors just since yesterday. it was the platform's biggest day of the election cycle. all of this intensifying, of course, over the weekend, reports say the president notified his team just one minute before sending out that official message. and then came a wave of support for

the vice president with a slew of key endorsements and donations, excitement building here in the bay area. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live for us in san francisco, where there's a rally set for the vice president today. >> hey, reggie. that's right. as those donations continue to pour in for the campaign, local democratic leaders here in san francisco are wasting no time letting the country know that this city has her back. this morning at 9:00, democratic leaders will hold a rally in support of vice president kamala harris on the steps of san francisco city hall. that's where we are expecting to hear from mayor london breed, city attorney david chiu and members of the san francisco democratic party. remember, harris was the first woman to ever serve as district attorney in san francisco. now, the oakland native has a chance to become the first woman, first black woman and first south asian woman to become president of the united states. both president biden and other top local

she is welcoming this year's ncaa championship teams at 8:30 a.m. now, this event was prescheduled before the president made that announcement yesterday, wednesday. the process begins. a democratic national committee will be holding its next rules meeting to open a framework in selecting a new nominee. no other democrat has announced plans to run for the nomination. many thought governor gavin newsom would throw his hat in the ring yesterday, though he tweeted support for his fellow californian, writing, quote, tough, fearless, tenacious, our democracy with our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against donald trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than america's vice president, kamala harris. now, perhaps most notably, nancy pelosi of san francisco, has not offered her endorsement for vice president harris in a recent meeting with other california democrats, the speaker emerita stressed the need for an open nomination process. >> some of the other top rumored democratic nominees are instead

choosing to back harris as the pick for president. now, here are some of the possible running mates. if she were to receive the nod. the very popular governor of pennsylvania, josh shapiro, and north carolina's roy cooper both gave their endorsements to the vice president. michigan governor gretchen whitmer joined a campaign call with the harris for president, staff, promising her support. other names include arizona senator mark kelly, kentucky governor andy beshear and illinois governor j.b. pritzker. beshear and pritzker have not publicly endorsed harris. another possible name recently turned independent joe manchin. now the west virginia senator, is considering reregistering as a democrat so he can seek the bid. manchin officially left the party in may. yesterday morning on abc's this week, he advocated for an open process to replace president biden. >> there are many questions about what will come next. amanda has more on how abc seven news insider phil matier is reacting to the president dropping out of the race.

hot seat. today, lawmakers in d.c. demanding answers on the lapse in security that allowed the assassination attempt on former president trump to happen. good morning everyone. it's monday, july 22nd. we start with a check on the weather and drew. >> hey, good morning guys. >> we're in store for some hot weather returning away from the coast. we'll start you out with this lovely picture from our east bay hills camera. a nearly full moon out there. limited cloud cover out there right now. you look at current sky conditions, many areas reporting clear skies, if not just partly cloudy skies. so our marine layer is certainly getting compressed compared to yesterday's high pressure moves in here. 50s right now around the bay shoreline. some of our warmer areas inland are in the 60s. so take a look at the heat advisories and excessive heat warnings that will kick in this morning for areas away from the coast. for those temperatures, not only in the 90s, but above 100 degrees in our hottest areas today. so we'll start inland, where those excessive heat warnings are in effect for good reason. look how fast those temperatures warm. by the afternoon we'll hit about 100, maybe 103 and some of our hottest areas around the bay shoreline. it will be warm, not

quite as hot inland, but certainly above average with temperatures in the mid 80s. if you're thinking of going to the coast to get some heat relief, good idea. we'll have sunshine this afternoon and temperatures mainly in the mid 60s. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times. >> good morning drew here at 531. much of the bay area is seeing a clear commute. this is minus the typical slowdown over in the altamont pass. but i do want to take you into san francisco southbound 101 before bayshore boulevard. there's a two vehicle crash blocking the left lane there, but you're only seeing a minor backup that is growing. however, you can see speeds down to 20mph there and then to oakland. there's an overturned vehicle northbound 880 at 66th avenue. it is slowing things down. you can see to ten miles per hour. our oakland, 8-80 cam showing that backup as the morning commute begins to pick up. so just take some time. take a few extra moments to leave early if you can, especially if you take 8-80 back to the desk. thanks, amanda. >> this morning the bay area has once again become the center of

global outage caused a huge, widespread mess on friday. microsoft says 8.5 million windows devices were impacted by that outage. they say that's only 1% of their overall use, according to reuters. security experts believe the update was more than likely not put through quality checks ahead of the update being launched. the latest version of the software was intended to make systems more secure against hacking services like 9-1-1 hospitals and scores of businesses are still recovering. some airports still impacted more than 16,000 flights across the country have been delayed today, according to flightaware.com. also this morning, delta airlines is unaccompanied minor program, which allows minors to fly independently, is on pause through tomorrow. the airline says unaccompanied children who are already booked on a delta flight will not be able to travel today. now, parents or guardians are asked to not book new flights for those children, at least not yet. back to you at the desk.

heat rise inland again today. look at your weather wellness with high pressure bringing us that hot weather. we also have moderate air quality. be aware of that. you'll notice the haze in the atmosphere. your uv index is a ten. put that sunscreen on, especially if you're going to the coast to beat the heat. so the beach forecast is looking quite lovely today for that heat relief. we have morning clouds out there, but high pressure will begin to squash that cloud cover throughout the morning. so we'll have sunshine in the afternoon 60s from bodega bay down through ocean beach, a little bit warmer in santa cruz and monterey. your ocean water temperatures currently 56 degrees. high pressure is in control. it's inching closer to us, acting like that heat pump we're watching. showers rotate around it clockwise. 1 or 2 of these may try and enter our atmosphere tomorrow or wednesday. that's something we'll watch, but the chance is extremely low highs today. it's hotter. we have heat alerts in effect. heat advisories in the south bay 88. in cupertino, 92 in san jose along the peninsula. it is warm, 86 in palo alto, 91 in redwood city. but cool along the coast, a wide range in the city today 60s for the sunset.
