washington. i'm ed wynn, abc seven news. >> thank you. m vice president harris already has the endorsement of many local politicians in fact, some san francisco democrats are holding a rally today in support of the vp, abc7 news reporter lena howland joins us live from san francisco. so, lena, what are people saying about this election twist? >> reporter well, reggie, local democratic leaders here in the bay area say vice president harris is very capable to take on the oval office, some even saying that her story is america's story. now, san francisco democratic leaders are wasting no time letting the country know that this city has her back. this morning at 9:00, they plan to hold a rally for vice president harris in the same place where her political career began. remember, she was the first woman to ever serve as the city's district attorney. speakers at today's rally happening at san francisco city hall will include mayor london breed, city attorney david chu and members of the city's democratic party supporters and
6:37 am
former advisers of hers are already mobilizing efforts to get voters to choose her. come november. >> first of all, investing in field organizing, investing in in organizers, that will not just go to the cities, but the rural communities across this country, you know, especially in battleground states. >> i've known this woman for more than 30 years, and she is very, very capable. >> this comes as an outpouring of donations have flooded in the actblue fundraising group says the harris campaign has raised more than $55 million from smaller donors. that happened in less than 24 hours since the announcement was made again, today's rally for vice president harris is expected to start at 9 a.m. on the steps of san francisco city hall, live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. east bay congresswoman barbara lee is rallying behind vice president kamala harris. she says the vice president can relate to
6:38 am
communities across the country because she understands people of various cultures. >> this is about unifying everyone. it's about connecting with the voters. no one is going into this looking at it through rose colored glasses. she cares about people and she sees people. and we have to just fight hard. we don't have a lot of time, but we're going to do it. >> congresswoman lee also says the vice president fights for everyone and is ready to lead the country. with the convention in just less than a month, there are still so many unanswered questions about what comes next for democrats. >> so what can we expect over the next few weeks? we're joined now by doctor nolan higdon, a professor of history and media studies at cal state east bay. that's probably asking too big of a question, because who would have thought that the past seven days would have happened? but here we are. so i want to ask you first about who has not come out yet for the vice president to be the top of the ticket. former president obama, he's left open door. it seems to have
6:39 am
perhaps someone else run and then we haven't heard an endorsement from nancy pelosi either. what do you make of that? is there beef? is there tea or is it just too soon? >> you know, i think there's a debate within the party, even if you support harris about whether or not it's best for the party in harris to go through some sort of process, there are some folks who believe that if, she has to compete for the nomination, then that will strengthen her candidacy. will demonstrate that she can fight and win. but there are others in the party that are concerned that if you don't, if you have that process, it may look like the party is divided. it may create some wounds that that can't heal by november. from some of the early indications we've seen from obama and pelosi in particular, they've both signaled that they would like to see some sort of process. so i'm not surprised they haven't endorsed, because i think they're still advocating for a process to figure out who the candidate is going to be. >> well, there's definitely been a lot of momentum in the hours since this announcement has been made. the harris campaign saying she's raised nearly $50 million.
6:40 am
now, how significant is that? and what do you make when you see those type of numbers, >> you know, i think it's really a major part of this, this whole story of, of biden stepping down. i think the real initial pressure came from donors who said initially they wouldn't donate to his campaign, and then any other democratic campaign. i think that put pressure on democrats to put pressure on biden, to step down. and once biden announced he wasn't going to run anymore, the donors opened back up the coffers. and you see, it immediately going to harris, i think that shows a lot of support amongst the donor class for harris, which is going to be important as presidential elections are very expensive. >> i'm wondering about this. so our our media partner, the standard, has a report out talking about how former mayor willie brown, who at one has known kamala harris for a very long time. they used to date politically. they known each other for a while, too. he wants president biden to step down now, and he's saying that that would be the biggest injection
6:41 am
for kamala harris to become president, because he would immediately put her in that position and just make it easier for voters to see her as the next president. do you ever see that as a scenario that would play out? >> i can't imagine at this point biden would step down unless there was, you know, something that that forced him to, but i do think, willie brown's comment is getting to something that's on a lot of people's minds. and i suspect that biden's going to try and clear this up this week, which is, if you don't think you can run for president, what makes you think you can be president? and i think that's kind of what willie brown is speaking to. and i know biden plans to give a speech this week where i where i anticipate that he'll try and explain why it is he did not run for president, but can still continue to do the job of presidency for the handful of months that are left. >> let's talk about potential vp candidates in the case that harris is becoming the democratic nominee, we see several governors mentioned what are your thoughts about that? who do you see as a likely candidate for that? >> yeah, i think, harris will
6:42 am
most likely choose, a governor from a swing state. so we've seen a shapiro and governor shapiro in pennsylvania mentioned a lot, as someone who harris may choose, shapiro would be part of that so-called blue wall, as would governor gretchen whitmer. so i think those are two, leading names we've seen we've also seen, you know, the governors of north carolina and, senator mark kelly of arizona mentioned as battleground states as well, so i'm imagining that harris is probably going to go in that direction. it's not really clear what someone like a gavin newsom would bring to the ticket, as they, you know, are both from from california, so i'm looking at those battleground state governors and or senators. i imagine that's where she's going to end up choosing someone. wait, you didn't say andy beshear and andy beshear is also on that that list, he is very impressive in that he's a democrat who's won in the deep red state of kentucky, actually, the state where i was born twice, but i
6:43 am
think there's a lot of concern that, kentucky is a state that just can't be flipped. and a lot of attention on that blue wall instead. >> interesting. okay, well, we will see what happens over the next coming days. you can't say this isn't wild because it is, this what a difference 24 hours makes having a totally different conversation yesterday morning. >> yeah, >> fasten your seat belts. thanks so much, sarah. still to come in the hot seat, the secret service director will have to answer tough questions about the security lapses on the day of former president trump was almost assassinated. >> then tesla bringing robots into the fold. when elon musk wants to start implementing them. here's drew. hey there. >> kumasi 643 this morning. we'll get you going on our monday morning looking at temperatures that are going to warm pretty fast. today we have a little bit of cloud cover along the coast, but most areas do have clear skies this morning. and temperatures will get hot later on this afternoon. away from the coast. 101 in walnut creek today with an excessive heat warning. in effect. lot cooler along the
