her this morning after a whirl wind 24 hours that catapulted kamala harris from the vice president to potentially the top of the ticket. 24 days after his disastrous debate performance with the relentless pressure from his own party only growing, president biden abandoning his bid for a second term. writing to his fellow americans, it has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. while it has been my intention to seek re-election, i believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term. the announcement a political earthquake, one that surprised even his own campaign and white house staff. it took biden more than three weeks to get to this point. in the days after the debate, he was defiant. >> i am running and gonna win again! i am all in! my word i am all in. >> reporter: biden insisting in

make that decision because time is running short. >> reporter: in the end, 40 democratic lawmakers came out against the president. >> i do not think he is the best person to go into this election. i think if he is our nominee, i think we lose. >> reporter: then another blow. biden forced off the trail by a covid diagnosis isolating in his beach house in delaware, reckoning with his political reality. huddled with just his closest advisers and family, sources tell us saturday night the president began to come to his decision. sunday morning he started making calls, letting the vice president know of his decision. sources say the two of them speaking several times throughout the day. then at 1:45 p.m., the president alerting his staff on a call. just one minute later releasing his letter to the world. first lady jill biden forwarding her husband's announcement with a heart. her office telling us she was supportive of whatever road he chose.

writing, now is the time to support kamala harris. harris also getting key endorsements from the congressional black caucus and several key governors like gavin newsom, josh shapiro and roy cooper all lining up behind her. the biden campaign this morning now full steam ahead for harris, even filing the paperwork. the campaign now officially harris for president. and there is no question right now that kamala harris is now the front runner in this race. she could, of course, become the first black woman, first asian-american to top a ticket. we will see her later this morning at an event at the white house and we do expect her to be back on the campaign trail very soon. >> george: mary bruce, thank you very much. >> robin: now the republican reaction on capitol hill.

many are calling for president biden to resign immediately, as the trump campaign shifts its focus to vice president harris. rachel scott, you know she's tracking it all for us. good morning to you, rachel. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. within minutes of president biden making this decision to drop out of the race, republicans on capitol hill called for him to step down immediately. house speaker mike johnson second in line to the presidency leading those calls, insisting if joe biden is not fit to run for president, he's not fit to serve as president, adding he must resign the office immediately. some republicans even threatening legal action over a change in the democratic ticket but that will likely be an uphill challenge. this is now a major campaign reset, to say the least. with just over 100 days to go until the november election. it's a curve ball the trump campaign was preparing for, but this is not one they wanted. trump's play book so far has been to attack, attack, attack. the former president who just days ago said he wanted to focus on unity, now calling president biden the worst president in american history and his running

convention where 4700 delegates are free to do what they wish. that's what they don't want. that's why the momentum for harris, robin. >> robin: if harris is the nominee, it will still be a close race. >> it will be a close race. it's very early. this is all hypothetical so far. but keep in mind that harris is running a little better than joe biden. at least preliminarily. there was a poll out that we did a month ago that had her up three points over donald trump. a poll that came out in the wake of that assassination attempt had it a dead tie 44/44. here's the reason some democrats might be optimistic about her chances. this is the approval rating among key constituencies. her approval among black voters 55%, substantially better than joe biden's better, substantially better than trump's number. trump has been appealing to black voters. that's a big number. also latino voters harris
7:13 am
perceived slightly better than joe biden. >> robin: she is the front runner. looks like she will be the nominee. some of her potential running mates don't appear to be that well known, rick. >> this is an interesting reality check how politics registers at this stage. most of the people we're talking about as potential running mates are barely known by the american people. people like the governor of michigan, pennsylvania, illinois, kentucky. you're talking about somewhere between 60% and 80% of the country who has no idea who they are. don't have enough information to make an opinion. it tells you about the unpredictability of this moment. there's some upside for some of those individuals but there's a lot of risk involved, too. >> robin: all right, rick. our thanks to you. george? >> george: let's get more with jon karl along with mary and rachel. jon, in the end, president biden really had no choice. it's almost as if, in the days since the debate, the democratic party held another primary. >> absolutely, george. no choice at all. he was left as the leader of a party that no longer wanted him as a leader. you had the entire elected leadership. you had basically the elder statesmen of the party.
7:14 am
basically obama never came out publicly, but it was clear what he thought. pelosi. this was something he just absolutely had to do. and, you know, now the party is breathing a sigh of relief. we don't know what's going to happen in this race. you can tell what donald trump thinks. he's obviously it's been scrambled. he was headed towards what he thought was a certain victory against joe biden. now you see an all out meltdown in his posts overnight. they're worried about a race that they can't predict. >> george: mary it does seem that the democratic party has closed ranks around kamala harris. we have manchin talking about pursuing a process. but the endorsements came in fast and furious. >> they did. it is very clear, she is the front runner. the party very much coalescing around her. in part because time is short here. in exactly one month from today a nominee is going to take the stage at the democratic national convention to deliver a keynote.
7:15 am
there's not a lot of time for challengers to come out. not a lot of time to turn this around. kamala harris, i am told, spent all day yesterday working the phones reaching out to hundred leaders in the party. senators, lawmakers, labor leaders. you name it. she knows she needs to unite the party behind her. she is going to be getting out there quickly, hitting the trails in the coming days. she knows how to articulate the arguments in this campaign and she knows she has to get out there and make the case against donald trump fast. >> george: the trump campaign really hoping president biden was going to stay in. now they're turning their sights on kamala harris. >> the trump campaign wanted it to be president joe biden on the ticket in november. there's no question. they thought with the questions about his age and mental fitness, they were hoping for yet another debate with joe biden right before the election, that he would be destined to defeat president biden on the november ballot. that has now all changed. as jon mentioned, you could tell
7:16 am
just how irritated and frustrated former president trump is just by looking at his social media page. he has been complaining of all of this change in the race. republicans are still trying to figure out a coordinated message how they'll take on harris. they have opposition books ready for harris and others. >> george: choose your adjective, shakespearean, biblical, historic, no one knows what's going to happen. >> i'm going to say shakespearean above all. this race was going to have the olest party nominee in history, joe biden. it still has the oldest major party nominee, but it's donald trump. >> george: thank you very much. whit? >> whit: democratic donors played a big role over the past few weeks. many appear to be coalescing around vice president harris as she works to win over key players. our senior white house correspondent selena wang has the latest on that from delaware. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. vice president harris already raised a flood of cash.
7:17 am
since yesterday she's raised more than $49 million from small dollar donors. that is more than the biden campaign ever raised in a single day this cycle. we're learning she's been working the phones making calls to more than 100 people including to governors of pennsylvania and kentucky, two people who both have been floated as her possible running mates. the biden campaign has become the harris campaign. that means she's getting their $96 million of cash on hand so anyone else who wants to challenge harris would be starting from way behind. major donors tell me they're very quickly coalescing around the vice president, even those who would prefer another candidate, because they know time is running out. vice president harris has got a very busy week ahead of her. i'm told she will be traveling to battleground wisconsin and indiana. but, look, the scrutiny she will be facing will be totally different now that she's trying to run at the top of the ticket. she could make history if she becomes the first black woman and asian american to become the

movie. i pulled over and rang ryan. i knew he was ready to shoot. he was shooting. thankfully, he said yes. >> robin: you remember the exact date and where you were. that tells you something. >> he called me, i had an absolute absence of ideas for a new movie. [ laughter ] yeah. we'd gone back and forth a bunch of times. lot of what we wrote in the movie was real life. deadpool entering the mcu. i think audiences care less about universes and care more about characters and smaller groups of people. we all relate to having a group of people around us, including wolverine. i was basically told all of the characters that i had come in with for the first deadpool movies were not ported over to mcu. it kind of served as the engine for this story to a certain degree. i felt like it was writing itself. when hugh said he would -- when he said he wasn't going to do it again, i had the same reaction. oh, come on.
8:33 am
[ laughter ] finally put these guys together. so sad. then when he made -- also, when a friend calls you in this day and age. >> george: it's ringing? >> took two full sentences. it was just the call that quite literally changed my life, you know? >> george: we had your director shawn levy here last week. he did great in his first network interview. >> directors on morning television? respect is insane. i don't understand. is this 1950s italy? wow. i'm so happy. >> george: you are actually showing what he said was at the heart of the movie. some ways it's a movie about friendship. >> it really is. >> yep. >> we are genuinely great friends. i had to pinch myself every

include the people writing the check for the movie as well. they were awesome. i can't believe they let us get away with some stuff. [ laughter ] it is a little shocking but, yeah. >> robin: we can't believe they have given us this exclusive never before seen clip of the movie. >> oh boy. >> robin: here it is. >> so what made you finally wear an honest to god costume? >> mine's red so they can't see me bleed. but i could see how yellow would be good, too. >> have you been checked for adhd? >> no, but i have had several std's which were probably caused by adhd. [ laughter ] >> good morning. sorry. i am sorry. >> our final program. we thank you for your allegiance and loyalty for all these years. [ laughter ] >> robin: the yellow and blue. the yellow and blue. >> actually, when i called ryan, literally on that phone call he said, if we did this, it has to be yellow and blue. i said, let's try it.
8:36 am
it had been talked about for 24 years. universal believed, not sure it will work. the moment i put it on, i remember walking on set. him in deadpool, me in the yellow and blue. this jaded crew that have done 100 movies. you could hear a pin drop. i can't imagine doing it any other way. in fact, i sleep in it. >> i said lavender body stocking. he heard yellow and blue super hero suit. whatever. >> george: tell us about going to madonna to get permission. >> one, i wasn't invited. >> we wanted the meeting to be tense and last longer. you are far too likable and charming. that was a genuine -- another once in a life time opportunity to talk to madonna. she doesn't lie since songs particularly "like a prayer" like that.
8:37 am
i was so nervous, partly because it's madonna. i even asked the person organizing it. do i say madonna? do i bow? is blinking insulting? [ laughter ] but this song had been in my head for six years since we just finished deadpool 2. i had been thinking about this song for a particular sequence in this movie. i went in just on my back foot. madonna was gracious. not only gracious, she gave us an idea or thought she had, musically with the piece in the movie that ended up being like a game changer. >> george: what? >> who knew madonna would have a genius level understanding of music and its application to pop culture? so, yeah. it was pretty good. at one point she sang back a little chorus of "like a prayer." shawn is with me. do you realize she is singing the song right now! in your face! [ laughter ] amazing. >> robin: oh my gosh.
8:38 am
you guys are so great, always. especially when you're out on a press tour. i have exhibit a. exhibit a. should we go to, i believe this was south korea. water bomb festival. >> oh boy. right? >> yeah. >> good job, by the way. [ laughter ] >> robin: ryan, your lovely wife blake. what does she label this? boys gone wild. that's boys gone wild. is that fair assessment? >> i told her that was water. i'd say it was pretty -- one of the great treats of our job is you get to go to different cities, cultures. they gave us sometime to play and see some of the sights and experience it which i think is really important. not just for us but for the people that live there. you don't just go and take a picture with the one thing everybody takes a picture with. you jump in and have fun.
8:39 am
that was the water bomb festival. incredible. >> what a brilliant idea. >> he and i were walking corpses as we walked into it. i'm so jet lagged. i don't think i can do this. we get out there, thousands with water -- >> 10,000 people shooting you with water guns. i'm like, wow, i'm getting really wet. i feel like i'm under water. when i realize ryan was aiming at me. then it was all bets were off. >> one of the best moments of my life. >> this thing is removable. i might put this on my bed. this awesome. >> are you kidding me? >> today is washing day. i don't have to do it. >> beautiful throw or shawl. let's qvc it. just give me the graphic. let's go. >> how many do we have to sell in the next hour? >> we have to sell one because that's all we have. >> george: we have to sell something. we have to go to commercial break. thank you for coming in. deadpool and wolverine hits theaters friday. coming up we're honoring a couple real life heroes. >> robin: so don't go anywhere.
