president biden dropped out of the race. harris thanking the president for his endorsement and pledging to finish the mission. he started with a victory in november. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz vice president. >> harris has quickly shored up a majority of president biden's delegates. >> and today she got another boost from the president when he called in to her event in delaware. >> the name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn't changed at all. and by the way, i'm not going anywhere. i'm going to be out there in the campaign with her, with kamala. i'm going to be working like hell, both as a sitting president, getting legislation passed as well as in campaigning. >> now, as the nation looks ahead to what happens next, there are three key factors emerging that are likely to influence the election. >> abc seven news reporter stephanie sierra has more on that, and how those factors could influence california and the bay area. steph. >> yes, ama and dan it's looking more and more likely vice president kamala harris will be the democratic nominee. now, if

that happens, she has a chance at rebuilding her campaign to reach that crucial 10% of undecided voters. now, with that comes several factors that not only could affect the race, but what some analysts say would redefine california politics with big impacts right here in the bay area. as democratic delegates continue to pledge their support for vice president kamala harris at the top of the ticket, what impact could the daughter of oakland bring here at home? >> i think you're going to see a dramatic change in the whole bay area. i think you're going to see a dramatic change in california. >> joe cotchett is a close ally of president biden and vice president harris. he explains a harris presidency would bring greater access for the bay area on the national stage. >> many people that have been involved in washington are going to be able to have more communications, more direct communications with the washington grouping, if you know what i mean. >> speaker emerita nancy pelosi announcing monday on x with

immense pride and limitless optimism for our country's future, i endorse vice president kamala harris for president of the united states. i have full confidence that she will lead us to victory if nominated. vice president harris has the opportunity to appeal to a key demographic undecided voters. >> we're talking about a smaller percentage, probably 10% or less, who are going to make the difference in this election. >> to do that, several factors will likely be at play. first age with president biden out of the race, former president trump is now the oldest presidential nominee in us history. in four years, he would be 82. kamala harris is 59. >> i think this is going to become a liability for trump. >> the second factor vice president harris campaign strategy on divisive policy issues like immigration, tax reform, foreign affairs and the economy. >> i think that, kamala harris or whoever the democratic candidate ends up being is going

to have the message of we need to tax the wealthy more, which would come as a stark contrast to donald trump's silicon valley backed running mate, jd vance. >> harmeet dhillon, california's republican party chairwoman and current trump lawyer, is confident the trump vance ticket will have greater appeal to undecided voters. >> but we have a country that has been traumatized by almost four years of democratic leadership in this country. >> but california democrats like hachette, a nationally recognized trial lawyer, saw firsthand harris's ability to prosecute as california's attorney general. he says those skills will be a powerful asset on the national stage against former president trump, who's been convicted of 34 felonies. she was a phenomenal prosecutor. >> she was on top of it. that's the electricity that she's going to get flowing through our society. >> the big question now, of course, is who would be vice president harris's running mate with michigan's governor,

gretchen whitmer, now out, cotchett expects it to be someone with east coast appeal, like pennsylvania governor josh shapiro or kentucky governor andy beshear. dan and ama, those two names among a handful that are frequently mentioned at this point. >> all right, stephanie, thank you so much for that. and within hours of president biden's announcement, more than 45,000 people gathered on a zoom call to support vice president harris's candidacy. the call was organized by the group win the black women. the organization said it made history by raising $1.5 million in just three hours, benefiting the harris campaign. on that call, longtime democratic operative donna brazile said voter registration and fundraising efforts in the coming days will be key. washington, dc mayor muriel bowser told the participants it was time to defend our sister from the crosshairs of donald trump. in the last 24 hours, more than $81 million has been raised by the harris campaign that sets a new presidential donation record and one of the

first phone calls that vice president harris made on sunday was to her pastor, the reverend doctor amos brown, pastor of the third baptist church in san francisco. >> reverend brown says he and his wife prayed with harris and is pleased with her decision to run. >> and i'm looking forward to a miracle being performed our member, madam becomes the president of this nation. >> reverend brown says it's time for america to elect a female president and vice president. harris is the right person for the job. >> support for vice president harris quickly coalesced in san francisco. some of her closest friends here held a rally supporting her. are we ready to go? >> are we fired up? we ready to

flatlands and redlining and yellow lining was a way that, of segregating people back in the 60s and 70s segregated but full of character. >> the vice president lived above this daycare, and porter says they spent a lot of time here. >> we got to fourth grade. we walked to school. i would sometimes come and wait for her mom to finish her hair. hair was a thing. >> a childhood. she wouldn't trade for anything, she remembers. summer block parties and playing games. >> at the end of the day, the most fun thing was coming outside at probably about 5:00 in the summer and everybody being outside and just playing together, it was just it was it was wonderful. >> the pair attended franklin and thousand oaks elementary. the school has a dedicated mural to the vice president. >> it was a wonderful place to grow up, and i think it really influenced her and gave her some good grounding and some good learning to have her be ready for where she is today. >> she says that character and community support inspired harris to pursue public service.

bart board member lateefah simon, who is running for congress, used to work for the vice president even before she was san francisco district attorney. she considers harris a mentor. >> toughest boss that i'll ever have. however, the best leader that i've ever worked for, she says she had to take breaks from her own campaign this weekend because she is excited about her mentor. >> projected to become the democratic presidential nominee. >> i know her spirit and her value of service and to me her becoming the nominee. the democratic nominee. it gives me so much hope. >> simon is a superdelegate, she says. there is no doubt she's casting her vote to make vice president harris the nominee at the upcoming convention in the east bay. ryan curry, abc seven news and remember, stay with abc seven for the latest election news, and be sure to download the abc seven news app to get information on the go. >> some trump supporters in the east bay claim they're being illegally forced to remove flags and signs from above highway 24.

abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley took a closer look at the situation above the highway. >> i received a call about the flags hanging on state property. my job is to come out here and ask them to be removed. >> lisa disbrow with patriots of contra costa shared videos with abc seven news of her encounter with caltrans recently, when she was told to remove american flags and trump signs on the el curtola boulevard overpass over highway 24 in lafayette. that overpass has become popular, with groups hoping to engage motorists, but this year, signs were posted on the bridge stating it is unlawful to affix posts or leave flags, signs or banners. >> the sign is uh- is an intimidation strategy. it is meant to look legal and authoritative. >> disbrow says she's been told to take down their flags. seven times since memorial day, because the state agencies

fielded complaints. the only reason i'm here right now is because we have something on the fencing. >> that's the violation. >> why is it that only patriots of contra costa, a maga group, has been removed? then why can the jews come up at 4:00 to 630 and put theirs up? why can hamas help pro-palestinians put theirs up? why can other groups come up and put theirs up? my first amendment doesn't evaporate because you don't like it. >> but caltrans responded to the accusations with a statement saying caltrans is content neutral. posting of messages or objects on overpasses or fencing creates a distraction for motorists. chp went on to say it is illegal to attach or otherwise hang any sort of sign or banner on an overpass fence. it is not illegal to stand there holding the same sign or banner, unless they said it creates an unsafe condition for the freeway below city of lafayette said

risk due to possible suicidal ideas. she's five foot three, about 125 pounds, with brown wavy hair, as you can see, and brown eyes. if you see her, please call 911. >> we are learning more details about last night's deadly encounter between san francisco police officers and a man with a gun. it happened on willow street near van ness today. abc seven news reporter luz pena went to the area to speak to a witness who saw the man on the ground as police surrounded him. >> this was the scene sunday night around 11:56 p.m. on san francisco's willow street, and i heard from the distance, cops shouting, put your hands out! >> on the bottom left you can see a man with his hands out. >> drew youngwirth lives in the area and said he heard multiple gunshots coming from willow street's alley seconds before police surrounded this man. i heard probably 5 or 6 gunshots and then looked out the window. >> he just kind of stayed there and eventually they like a swarm

of police, just ran over and kind of tackled him. and i think they took a gun from him or he was armed. >> in this video, the man can be seen on a stretcher, according to sfpd. he later died in the hospital. so what led to this? in a video obtained by our media partner, the san francisco standard, police can be heard yelling, stop before shooting an unidentified man as he ran away from police towards van ness. in a statement, the police department said officers were investigating an armed robbery that occurred on mcallister street. before the shooting, the san francisco police officers association claims their review of this video shows the suspect fired at officers first, before officers returned fire. drew confirmed seen a firearm left behind. this latest incident adds to a number of complaints from residents and merchants, who say illicit activity on willow street is getting worse. >> willow, between van ness and

larkin, is probably the most drug infested two blocks of san francisco during the day. >> randy shaw, with the tenderloin housing clinic, said this area has also become a magnet for crime. last month, during a police operation, officers arrested 43 people with outstanding arrest warrants. >> all these fugitives who committed crimes nowhere near the tenderloin. but they come and they think they can be safe in the tenderloin. that sends a message about how the city is treating the neighborhood. >> the executive director of the tenderloin merchants association said the city has been investing in cleaning up the area, but says merchants want more. the city has been deploying resources and cleaning operations, and the alley basically nonstop, so we're grateful for that. >> but, you know, the fact of the matter is that willow is still not in a good place. >> sfpd confirmed the officer involved shooting is being investigated by the district attorney's office in san francisco. luz pena abc seven news. >> today in contra costa county, a 30 year old man was arraigned

for murder along with several other charges. alexis pineda is accused of driving under the influence when he crashed into the car of 16 year-old ricky barajas, as the team was backing out of his mother's driveway last monday. both cars were so badly mangled, both drivers were trapped in their cars. when barajas was pronounced dead at the scene. pineda is being held on $1.1 million bond. >> coming up here, a controversial plan to create a new city in solano county is now on hold. we follow this very closely. why? the company behind the project is t

painted a bleak picture. the group behind the project, california forever, says they will do more research and work with the county to create an environmental impact report. >> we're going to line up all of these approvals, do the work with the county, have additional input, and then bring it back to the voters for one big approval. >> california forever now expects to put the measure on the ballot in 2026. the project would create a new city of 400,000 residents in eastern solano county. >> all right, let's get a check on our weather and some of these hot temperatures inland. >> it is just sizzling around the bay area. >> abc7 news meteorologist lisa argen is here with more. lisa. >> all righty. yes. that's exactly right. now we have the marine layer, which is keeping us cool, some of us along the shoreline. but those lightning strikes behind me. never a good sight. but the good news is that stable air allowing for the lightning to stay out of the bay area. for a time being. we were wondering if that was going to head our way, but nonetheless, we don't need any more fires in california and these are sure to

ignite more fires in the mountains as we look a little bit closer, you'll notice that we've got the cloud deck right along the shoreline here, so it's just at a couple hundred feet and it has been chilly, but our excessive heat warning remains for inland valleys and hills. and we've got the advisory that is really marginal from the north bay where it was in the 90s. okay that's warm, but it wasn't really that hot. and so we'll see if this will continue into tuesday and wednesday. but so far, yes, we are still looking at that hot weather. but the really hot weather is inland 57.5 moon bay. it is 90 in san jose 64 san francisco a comfortable 75. in oakland, 82, in hayward with redwood city in the 80s, we had a big jump from yesterday. but the marine layer allowing for that cool air and the sea breeze to help us out right here along the coast and locally around the bay. so back to 100 degrees by the delta. we're in the upper seconds in san jose, santa rosa, upper elevations, warm air in place. and so that is certainly

drying out the atmosphere. livermore toasty at 99. so compared to yesterday, 14 to 19 degrees hotter from concord to livermore. and notice the trend gets less impressive as you get closer to the city here. so we are looking at the fog from the distance here from our east bay hills camera. so triple digit heat continues inland for your tuesday and by wednesday this high is going to begin to be sliding to the east of us. and that will bring us increased fire concerns for tuesday and wednesday, with some breezy winds through the delta. and then by the time we get to the weekend, we're looking at not only cooler weather, but below average weather. and we're going to see widespread low clouds and fog, even with some mist and drizzle overnight. we're looking at that high tide at about 1 a.m. over 6.5ft. so that could produce some low lying flooding here or coastal flood advisory through 2 a.m. you know, the areas around mill valley and also some of the sloughs there into the east bay. so watch out

for that overnight. we're in the upper 60s to near 70 warm conditions in our inland valleys. but elsewhere in the 50s, so comfortable. thank goodness we'll cool off. and as we look ahead towards friday, look at the drop off in temperatures 15 to 20 degrees in our inland valleys. so it's actually a pretty nice day in the afternoon on friday, our coolest day looks to be on saturday. we'll wait for the sunshine for throughout mid to late morning, and then we'll look for the breezy winds to keep the bayside areas cool. just in the 60s there and then by sunday a little bit of warming. so highs tomorrow 102 in concord. look at that 104 by the delta 93 in san jose. that's a warm day. but up in the north bay it will be a quick warm up. but upper 90s in santa rosa. that's toasty. 70 san francisco, 77. in oakland, the accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow the hottest day not as hot on wednesday and then widespread cooling on friday. the weekend. whoa. we are below average. you have to get the jacket out and then moderating the temperatures
