were in the 50s and 60s around the bay shoreline. it is still warm inland. we have 60s and 70s right now, but we will start to see cooler weather begin to arrive over the next couple of days. no heat advisories in effect today. it is warm inland, just not as hot as we have been the past couple of days. we're in the 80s by 11 a.m. and then by 4 p.m. we'll have those temperatures in the low and mid 90s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. it's a cooler afternoon compared to yesterday for the most part. will stay in the 70s with afternoon sunshine and a lot less fog expected tonight than we have right now. and then as we head towards the bay shoreline, we'll keep it pretty cloudy today. we had ample sunshine yesterday along the coast, but a marine layer is going to cling to the coast today. daytime highs in the low and mid 60s. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times this morning. >> yeah. drew will take you to san jose where it is pretty active on your road. but people are definitely slowing down because of a brush fire. this is southbound 880 before 101. so this is around first street. if you're familiar, it is slowing things down to 58mph. and here's

the reason why this is a caltrans still pick up dated at about 553 this morning. so just a few minutes ago, you can see that smoke really hovering over the roadway there as chp has the right lane blocked off. there is fear that this fire could be spreading to nearby businesses. so we're definitely keeping our eye on it. and then you can see some of that smoke. this is from our san jose two 8017 cam as well. things here quiet and calm. but still again a little smoky drive times. now that typical slowdown from tracy to dublin 48 minutes 17 minutes from dublin to mission boulevard south and then a 16 minute drive from 101 to cupertino, let's get back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. new this morning, southwest just announced some major changes, saying it's ditching open seating on flights and will soon start assigning seats. and this is a historic shift. southwest is known for its first come, first seated boarding policy that is ending. abc seven news reporter lena howland live at san francisco bay oakland international airport with more on why the airline made the switch.

>> well, kumasi, despite holding on to this unique seating policy for the past 50 years, southwest says their customer preferences have evolved. that's why they are hoping to transform the customer experience, while also improving the company's financial performance. take a look at your screen right now. these are the three changes. southwest is making, and shifting to assigned seats isn't the only change. the airline will also offer premium seating options, and for the first time, they'll be adding some overnight red eye flights, though none are out of the bay area just yet. southwest says more customers are taking longer flights where they'd rather have assigned seats, and while the cabin layout details are still being worked out, the airline says they expect about one third of seats across the plane to offer extended leg room, similar to what passengers see on other airlines. in a press release, southwest said that when a customer chooses to stop flying with them and picks a competitor instead, open seating is cited as the number one reason for the

change. according to their own research, 80% of existing southwest customers prefer in assigned seats and 86% of potential customers prefer an assigned seat as well. it's not clear exactly when these seating changes will take effect just yet, but we do know that many of those red eye flights are already up for sale. they will start taking off in mid february, live in oakland lena howland, abc seven news lena, thank you. >> today, president biden will welcome israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to the oval office. just a day after netanyahu's fiery speech to congress. amanda, this is the first face to face meeting between the two leaders since the israel and hamas war began. yeah, reggie. >> and today's meeting is also president biden's first meeting with a world leader since announcing he would drop out of the 2024 presidential race. it comes at a fragile time for their relationship, president biden has remained firmly behind israel even as netanyahu's campaign to eliminate hamas has

killed tens of thousands of palestinians in gaza. netanyahu was met with protests across washington, d.c, yesterday. they condemned his visit, chanting free palestine and marching toward the capitol before police deployed pepper spray. netanyahu remained defiant, telling lawmakers israel will settle for nothing less than total victory. he delivered this message to people who criticized the war. >> when the tyrants of tehran, who hang gays from cranes and murdered women for not covering their hair, are praising, promoting and funding you, you have officially become iran's useful idiots. >> netanyahu will also meet with vice president kamala harris today. she did not attend his speech yesterday and tomorrow. he plans to visit former president donald trump at his home in florida. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. a massive crowd showed up at bojangles coliseum in charlotte, north carolina, yesterday for former president trump's first public rally since the assassination attempt. it was also his first

president harris doing better against former president trump than president biden did earlier this year. trump still holds a three point lead over the vice president in the poll. the same poll, conducted in june, showed trump with a six point lead over president biden for the first time. >> president biden spoke to the nation about his decision to end his campaign during an emotional speech from the oval office last night, he delivered a solemn call for voters to defend democracy and spoke about the importance of passing on leadership to the next generation. >> you know, there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life, but there's also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. and that time and place is now. >> the president gave his full support to vice president kamala harris, saying her campaign is focused on the future. in san francisco, people came together to watch that speech at mayonnaise in the mission. some got emotional viewing the speech as a goodbye. >> i actually think i walled off

a lot of my feelings and emotions around politics because i felt so hopeless over the last few weeks. >> president biden reassured the country he plans to finish his term democratic delegates will formally choose their candidate for election at the convention next month. >> 608 let's get you going this morning. here's a look at your next couple of hours. there's some patchy fog right now around the bay shoreline and along the coast. temperatures are mainly in the 60s. you can see the warming process not as quick as it has been the past couple of days. feels pretty pleasant out there through much of the morning. you'll take a look at your forecast today. it is cooler in the city today. a high of 68 degrees pleasant in the east bay 75. no heat advisories today in the south bay or the inland east bay. we'll go to 89 in san jose, 93 that high in walnut creek. live doppler seven high pressure across southern california is now moving away. this area of low pressure is beginning to take charge, and that is going to bring the cooler weather over the next

the park fire exploded overnight, burning 45,000 acres since it started. this is new video showing the intense flames. there are evacuations northeast of chico and it's only 3% the fire contained this morning in sonoma county. firefighters have stopped forward progress on a fire that sparked yesterday. the flora fire started off a off of chalk hill road in geyserville. it

stopped at about 50 acres. it's 35% contained now. crews have been working overnight to build containment and put out hotspots. a small city in santa cruz county could be getting a new fire station, but it will be up to voters. this is a rendering of a possible replacement station for scotts valley. voters will be deciding in november whether or not they will approve it. the local fire protection district board moved the plan forward, claiming the existing station is aging and does not meet building standards. they also say an improved station could be a better hub for fire or storm emergencies, both of which have impacted the area. one of the bay area's biggest wine companies has filed for bankruptcy. vintage wine estates in santa rosa is trying to pay off the company's debts and find a home for its assets. the company says it sold property and equipment from constantino, one of its napa valley wineries, for $10.5 million. it's also delisting from the nasdaq, which requires a minimum price of at least $1 a share. vui is a

parent company of wineries including garrard and burr comb. parents in the east bay just found out their children's school is closing for repairs. and amanda officials say this school in richmond is too dangerous for students. >> yeah, kumasi. the west contra costa county school district says environmental hazards were discovered during summer repair work. but it's not clear yet where students will attend class when the school year begins next month. the closure comes as the school district is facing a first in the state lawsuit, calling out dangerous facilities and chronic staffing shortages at steeg and other campuses. they say in the suit. in the suit, the district failed to provide the basic tools for a quality education at steeg elementary school, helms middle school and kennedy high school, according to edsource superintendent doctor kenneth hurst stated at a recent board meeting, the district's human services or human resources team, i should say, is working hard to fill hundreds of open positions. back to you, reggie.

>> organizers are making one last push to help south bay families in need ahead of the start of the new school year. sacred heart community service in san jose has one more week to get 1000 more backpacks for young students. the group's annual school supply giveaway is critical. in a time of sky high prices. >> it is a big need because it helps parents families, not stress about it, and it helps them a lot in their financial because right now, everybody, all a lot of families here in the bay area are struggling and us doing this, we'll lift a lot of stress from them and also get kids excited for the school yea. >> their goal is to give away 4000 bags full of school essentials next tuesday, and thursday. recipients must pre-register on the sacred heart community service website. >> an update to this week's hydrothermal explosion at yellowstone national park. the big biscuit basin will be closed for the rest of the 2024 season. for visitor safety. so this is what it looked like yesterday. you can see nobody was in that

there's all these subsets, you know? >> got to learn your ghost, your ghouls and goblins. watch little scooby doo. you learn a lot there. we have a lot of those in the those episodes, but all it was was just mr. harris from the carnival. gotten away with it, too. always that this morning. let's take you to sutro tower. it's a lovely picture out there this morning where the sun up, you can see the morning marine layer there overhead. here's the accuweather headlines. we have cooler air arriving today and tomorrow. in fact, tomorrow those temperatures are really going downhill. that downhill trend does continue for the weekend both saturday and sunda. we'll keep those temperatures below average. but both days we will have ample sunshine. so the weekends looking up to be very nice. next week. some minor warming expected but no heat advisories expected with that minor warmup. it's all about a significant cool down over the next couple of days. from today to our coolest day on saturday, we'll drop anywhere from 4 to 14 degrees. our biggest cool down is coming inland, where those temperatures will struggle to even touch 80 degrees by the

start of the weekend. that feels nice. if you've been in that inland heat wave for much of the week. so the heat wave is over. cooling trend begins today. those temperatures are still above average. it's not as hot as we have been the past couple of days out there. so looking at highs today, we'll go into the 90s, inland, 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline, 60s along the coast. so a close look at those highs today. our microclimates 80s and 90s in the south bay. no heat advisories in effect today. the peninsula 80s for san mateo palo alto cooler along the coast with that cloud cover will mainly be in the 60s across the city today. breezy and cloudy this morning, a little bit of sunshine this afternoon in the north bay. it's warm. 88 san rafael 87. sonoma about 89. in santa rosa, the east bay, mid 70s to the mid 80s. so certainly cooler than yesterday and then inland. no heat advisories but still warm in the 90s for daytime highs overnight tonight we'll see even cooler air move in. tonight's even cooler than we were this morning with temperatures in the 50s. now tomorrow that heat really retreats. look at our inland

of that cooler weather. right now we're in the 50s, close to the coast, 60s and 70s in our warmest areas inland. now today, the inland forecast does call for temperatures back into the 90s, but our heat advisories are done. we're just not as hot as we had been the past couple of days, but still warm. this afternoon. we'll be in the 80s by 11 a.m. and then those warmest areas, low and mid 90s by 4 p.m. around the bay shoreline. it is cooler than yesterday, but still mild. we'll go into the 70s close to 11 a.m. our warmest spots later on this afternoon, coming close to 80 degrees along the coast. yesterday we had a lot of sunshine here. today it's a different story. the clouds will cling to the coast all day long, so partly sunny skies, but comfortable temperatures will stay in the low and mid 60s with a light breeze later on. this afternoon. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times this morning? hi, drew. i'm going to take you back to the south bay where things are slowly recovering in san jose. >> this is because of an earlier brush fire at southbound 880 before 101. so this is near first street. you can see speeds are still down to about 41mph as the commute picks up. here is a look at a still photo from

caltrans. this was updated last at 623. you can see the right lane is still blocked there as crews continue to respond to this. but the good news is it looks like there's no smoke anymore. the fire seems to be out and then a good commuter alert. everything's green as bart and caltrain. no delays on any of them. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. today we're expected to learn who will join a bipartisan task force investigating the attempted assassination of former president trump. and we have new details this morning about the actions of the accused shooter. in the hours and minutes before the shooting, federal officials say the gun seen an officer's helmet video had a collapsible stock, making it easier to conceal and carry. fbi director christopher wray told the white house judiciary committee the gunman flew a drone near the rally before trump took the stage. >> was flying the drone around the area, not over the stage. i would say about 200 yards, give or take away. >> the fbi director also

>> new. this morning, southwest is saying goodbye to open seating on their flights. it plans to start assigning seating at some point in the future. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at san francisco bay. oakland international lena southwest says this is what passengers want. >> yeah, reggie. that's right. and it's not clear exactly when these changes will take effect. but it is a significant change from their first come, first seated boarding policy. now southwest says that their customer preferences have evolved, many taking longer flights where they'd rather have assigned seats. in a press release put out overnight, the airline said that when a customer chooses to stop flying with them and picks a competitor instead, open seating is cited as the number one reason for the change. southwest will also offer premium seating options. the airline says they expect about one third of seats across the plane to offer extended leg room, similar to what passengers see on other airlines. in a statement from bob jordan,
