a new fire in the east bay, threatening homes. the fire has quickly grown to 150 acres. flames are burning on évora road in bay point. cal fire and contra costa county fire are working to douse those flames from the air and on the ground. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. there are evacuation orders and warnings in effect right now. >> let's take a look at the map for a better idea. that larger red shaded area is for the evacuation order, which means an immediate threat to life. and you should leave now. it encompasses parts of concord and bay point north of highway four. all right. >> and then look at this. the smaller yellow portion to the right is the evacuation warnings. that means there is a potential threat. and people who need additional time to evacuate should leave right now. >> all right. let's get the latest on the fire. let's get to abc7 news reporter anser hassan. answer >> and, dan, good evening. i just spoke to contra costa county fire protection district. they say there are three sections of the driftwood neighborhood in bay point that are now under mandatory
5:02 pm
evacuation. right behind me you can see this is the fire line. fire crews have been out here for almost an hour. this is evora road. it is now closed, except for those people who are trying to evacuate. now it is hot, it is dry, and you can probably hear it is very windy. all factors that favor this fire. fire officials tell me the wind is blowing east, which is towards the neighborhoods. fire officials say they've deployed teams in the line of the path of the fire, trying to protect homes, trying to protect structures is the top priority, right now. cal fire is also out here doing air drops, their bulldozers trying to expand the firebreak because on the other side of this hill is highway four. they're trying to keep the fire from jumping over to highway four, which is right now open and very busy as it is commute hours. and as we said at the top of the show, 150 acres is how much this fire has spread to. you can see that the air drops that are happening, fire crews monitoring the fire that
5:03 pm
they just put out here. so far, highway four remains open. we'll keep you posted with updates throughout the rest of the evening. reporting live anser hassan abc seven news. >> angela, thanks very much. let's check in now with abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian. >> yeah, spencer, we know that the heat has eased some, but let's talk about the wind. oh, yeah. >> well, i'm of the wind is still quite strong. the sustained winds now aren't very strong. they are out of the west southwest at about ten miles per hour. as you can see on the graphic here, the gusts are up to a slightly above 20mph. and it's those gusts that are of greater concern than the sustained winds, which aren't very strong right now, but the relative humidity, which is so dangerously low, is also a big concern. that's only 15%. and that will increase gradually going into the evening hours, as we generally get an increase in humidity. but it won't be a significant increase. the temperatures earlier were around 9192 degrees. now the temperature in the nearest reporting station is 88 degrees. so that's gradually coming down. but as i'm as you pointed out,
5:04 pm
the wind is the major factor right now. whipping the fire, spreading the fire again. it's coming mainly out of the west southwest. smoke from the fire is blowing mainly to the east, so communities in the path of the smoke will, of course, experience a decline in air quality. ama and dan. >> all right. thanks, spencer. very much. now, spencer, if you would stand by for just a moment, we're going to check back in with you for details on the fire in butte and tehama counties and the conditions there in just a couple of minutes. >> for now, though, here is the latest on the park fire, which broke out wednesday. it has exploded in size and is now the 20th biggest wildfire recorded in california state history so far. more than 178,000 acres have burned. already 134 structures have been destroyed, and 4200 structures are still threatened, which means evacuation orders are still in effect. abc news reporter kayna whitworth is near the fire lines with the latest dan and ama. >> what you can see right there. oh, that tree is just topping off in flames here. it's crowning. that's a major concern because the wind can then throw those flames further and create
5:05 pm
spot fires. so not only are firefighters battling the flames here, but they're battling triple digit heats as well. and dan and ama, i'm told this fire is burning aggressively and angry in all the right places tonight. apocalyptic scenes of destruction as the fast moving park fire rages out of control. california fire officials say at least 134 homes and other buildings have been burned to the ground. thousands more threatened the fire, doubling in size overnight. cal fire, using every available asset, these massive dc tens dumping waves of retardant on flames look at right there. so they're doing major phos-chek drops in this area because this fire continues to jump its major containment lines. >> so they're relying heavily on this air attack right now more than 4000 already under evacuation orders. >> and that number growing by the hour. >> you have to be prepared to go. >> firefighters from all over the state working 36 hour shifts
5:06 pm
are jacqueline lee at base camp. >> when you're on the front lines, what are you seeing? >> uh- we're seeing? i mean, it's walls of fire. it's extreme fire behavior. it's very hot. we're seeing a lot of civilians who are scared for their homes. >> paul and janet mallory made it out safely the last they heard, their home was still standing. >> i couldn't believe it because i was fully prepared that our house was gone, and i just thought, you know, it's a house. we're safe, we're alive. >> and now, warnings for paradise, the town devastated by the 2018 camp fire, the deadliest wildfire in california history. authorities say the park fire was started on purpose by 42 year old convicted sex offender ronnie stout, allegedly setting his mother's toyota yaris on fire and pushing it down an embankment. he's being held without bail. kayna whitworth abc news. >> all right, so far the park fire is 0% contained, so we're tracking the conditions facing firefighters there. spencer is back with those details. spencer. >> yeah, this is a very serious
5:07 pm
situation. obviously. dan a massive fire with a massive plume of smoke being generated as you can see on this satellite image, we've been tracking this for a couple of days now, and it's a massive amount of smoke coming out of this fire. the wind is generally out of the south southwest, and you see that smoke blowing up to the northeast. so right now it's mainly those areas in the northern sacramento valley and in the northern sierra. and you can see that smoke moving up just north of susanville right now. let me give you a look at the red flag warning for high fire danger, which will be in effect as of now, expected to be in effect until 11 p.m. gusts up to about 30mph. occasionally, higher gusts, relative humidity still dangerously low. they're only 10 to 15%. and of course, that means increased fire danger. once again, i'll give you a look at that because people have been asking about the smoke from this fire. will it affect us here in the bay area? that is unlikely to happen because right now we have moderate to good air quality in virtually all locations, and that smoke is moving away from the region we're in, moving toward the northeast. dan and
5:08 pm
ama. >> all right, spencer, thank you so much for keeping track of all that for us. and we're also tracking a new fire. this is in the sunol area. it's burning through the grass along calaveras road near welch creek in the area of sunol regional park. you can see a fair amount of smoke over the hills in this time lapse that we're showing you. it's up to about 50 acres. no word yet on containment. >> and don't forget you can track the wildfires burning across the state with an interactive map on our website. it also gives you an idea of fire warnings and air quality as well. just go to abc seven news.com/fire map. >> oakland mayor sheng tao is backing governor newsom's request for the city to revise its police pursuit policy. governor newsom sent a letter to oakland city officials urging them to update the policy put into place in 2014. the governor says chp officers who are now patrolling oakland streets saw suspects, quote, fleeing with impunity because they know they won't be chased. mayor tao opted not to answer our questions, but released a video statement calling on the police commission
5:09 pm
to take action. >> we must be in line with our policies, with other jurisdictions so that we can ensure that our community is safe. >> under its current rules, oakland officers can only launch a pursuit if there's reasonable suspicion that a person has committed a violent forcible crime or a crime with a gun, or if there's probable cause that the person has a gun. critics say there's no data showing police pursuits do anything to stop crime or solve crimes, but they do increase the danger for people on the streets. >> two people died in a crash after going over a cliff at devil's slide. the chp says the single car crash happened about 1115 this morning. both sides of highway one were shut down between pacifica and montara as crews rappelled down to the beach and found the people sadly dead inside. the road has since reopened. the cause of that crash is under investigation. >> today, san francisco fire chief janine nicholson announced her retirement because of
5:10 pm
medical issues. nicholson will leave her post at the end of august for what she described as unforeseen medical issues. nicholson is the second woman and the first openly gay person to lead the department in a statement, the 30 year veteran said, quote, i am proud of the san francisco fire department and the people that work day and night to protect our city and citizens. it has been a great privilege and honor to serve as your fire chief for the past five years. >> well, still ahead here, we're learning new details about some of the items seized during the fbi raid at oakland. mayor sheng tao's home last month, and we're continuing to monitor that fire burning near homes on évora road in bay point. >> as we told you at the beginning of the newscast, some residents have received evacuation orders. the area of greatest concern right now is around nichols road and driftwood drive. we're going to bring you updates as
5:11 pm
5:12 pm
5:13 pm
along with mayor tao's phone and computer. federal agents also took the phone belonging to her boyfriend, andre jones. thus, according to the san francisco chronicle, jones stopped using his phone shortly after the raids and switched to a new number. the report states. as previously reported here, the raids may be linked to a campaign contribution laundering scheme to date, no charges have been filed. mayor tao has denied any wrongdoing. >> oakland rising that's a nonprofit organization focused on increasing voter participation in the city, says it does not support recall efforts against mayor shengtao and alameda county district attorney pamela price. the group held a news conference today to announce they are no on recall effort. they say millions of dollars is being wasted on the recalls and could be critical to community needs. >> undermining our democracy is not what's going to help oakland recover, we have wasted and
5:14 pm
watched people waste millions of dollars to qualify these, elect these recalls. we feel that this is a time where, as oaklanders, we have to come together to resolve the issues in our community. >> the mayor's critics blame her for the city's issues, and accused the district attorney of failing at her job as the county's prosecutor. >> california congressman and u.s. senate candidate adam schiff is in the bay area for a weekend of his own campaign events. he sat down with us this afternoon to discuss several topics, including this week's washington, d.c, visit by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. schiff explained why he did not join some of his fellow democrats in congress who boycotted netanyahu's address. >> i never boycotted a an address before congress, and i also have respect for the state to state relationship between the united states and israel. i think it's a very important alliance for us. but i have deep disagreements with the prime minister, and there are times many times over the last nine months where it has appeared
5:15 pm
that the prime minister believes it's politically advantageous for him in his right wing coalition to pick a fight with president biden. >> schiff also talked about the democrats new presidential candidate. he was one of the house members who prosecuted former president trump in his impeachment trial, and says the strategy that led to the impeachment might serve kamala harris's campaign. in the lead up to the election. >> what i ended up pivoting to in the impeachment case was moving away from strictly reliance on what he was charged with. in that case, it was withholding hundreds of millions of dollars from ukraine to extort that country into helping him cheat in an election to focusing on his patent, unfitness for office, the fact that he can't tell right from wrong, the fact that he, is a pathological liar, that he, is basically indecent. and we can't leave someone like that running the country. we can't go back to that kind of chaos, that ugly,
5:16 pm
divisive chaos. she is already powerfully making that case. do we want to go back to that chaos, or do we want to go forward? do we want to have a country where we're attacking climate change, where we're attacking, you know, this epidemic of gun violence, where we're improving the quality of life? we're bringing people together? i think people are going to choose that forward looking vision over that reactionary, backward looking vision of donald trump. >> schiff also says he believes joe biden's exit from the race has the trump campaign, quote, scrambling to reorganize. he believes trump is scared to debate vice president harris and may be having second thoughts about choosing jd vance as a vice presidential running mate. >> new polling shows. vice president kamala harris and donald trump are effectively tied five days after president biden's exit from the race. a wall street journal survey shows trump leading harris 49 to 47%. that's within the margin of error of plus or -3.1%. a trump held a six point lead over mr.
5:17 pm
biden before his exit. harris leads trump 45 to 44% when robert f kennedy jr and other independent and third party candidates are included. now, you can count on abc seven news for all things politics as we race toward election day. now for live updates and expert analysis on this presidential election, just head to our website, abc seven news.com/election. >> coming up, one of the country's largest wine producers based here in the bay area files for bankruptcy. what it means for its more than 30 brands and what industry experts say this could indicate

its portfolio includes well-known brands like layer cake, sonoma coast vineyards and windsor. abc seven news reporter luz pena went to wine country to talk to experts about what this means for the industry.
5:20 pm
>> the news of vintage wine estates filing for bankruptcy, sending shock waves throughout the industry. >> just execution of the ipo. they i think it was rushed a little bit. >> the santa rosa based company went public in 2020 under it over 30 wine and spirit brands. most of their products in the 15 to $20 range. to understand what might have gone wrong, we spoke to rob mcmillan, one of the top wine business analysts in the country. >> the industry is certainly flat on sales. the fine wine industry is doing a little better. the lower priced wine that's certainly struggling. >> mcmillan believes a generation shift is also impacting sales. >> the younger generation is not drinking wine like the older generation. in a statement, vintage wine estates said they're pursuing the sale of all or substantially all of the company's assets and added in part, vw expects commercial operations to continue largely business as usual and we look forward to serving our customers
5:21 pm
during this period of transition, according to multiple experts, the wine industry is facing a global crisis. >> winemaker patrick cappiello is seeing it. >> traditionally, this time of year, i would do almost twice the amount of wine that's that's producing year. >> he believes the pandemic, a younger generation discovering wine later in life, and the boomer generation might be playing a role. >> people that have been the main driver behind wine consumption, and they are starting to pull back, whether it's because they have enough wine in their cellar or because of health reasons. >> sonoma county supervisor susan gorin is concerned about what the bankruptcy of vw will mean for many. here. they are. >> cohen and kunde winery, especially, are so important to the economy of sonoma valley and sonoma county. so it's distressing to me. >> despite all this, no one here is losing hope. >> i think there are brighter times coming in sonoma county. >> luz pena abc seven news. >> all right. we're continuing to follow breaking news in bay point in the east bay. cal fire
