going to hear from bay area fire crews who tonight are helping fight the massive park fire that spans two counties. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. we have team coverage for you tonight. our tim johns is following a huge fire near chico for us, which has just exploded in size. and cornell bernard is at the scene of a fire in contra costa county in what's turned into a busy night because it feels like just everything is burning. >> the fire started this afternoon off of ora road in bay point, and it spread rapidly. it grew to over 450 acres and people were ordered to get out of their homes. some of those houses threatened by the flames are covered in retardant. you see that there? the fire is 20% contained tonight. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is there, and he spoke to some of the people who had to evacuate cornell. >> yeah, i'm a very still very windy here. and a very stressful day for several hundred homeowners forced to evacuate. the good news most are back home tonight. but that fire got very

close to this neighborhood. >> and all in a sudden, when i'm in the restroom, i look in the window and i saw dark smoke coming from the house right in front of me, eleanor schwartz says. >> behind that smoke was a fast moving wall of flames marching toward her bay point neighborhood. friday afternoon, she grabbed her dog, sophie, and was ready to make a run for it. when she and her car got doused with retardant from a firefighting aircraft. >> policeman was out there and we all got drenched with that red stuff, and that's when i decided to leave. >> acres and acres of dry grass. creating the perfect recipe to fuel the fire. contra costa fire says it started near the shooting range off évora road and quickly spread, carried by strong winds. >> the fire got into some light, flashy fuels and the wind took it from there. the winds today were, i believe, right around 14mph out of the west uh- but up on the ridge tops and up on the hilltops, they seem to blow a

lot harder than that. >> sky seven showed the firefight unfolding. you can see how close the flames came to this neighborhood near driftwood drive. how scary is this afternoon been? >> my heart right now is going 10,000 miles a minute. >> denise and robert tavares couldn't get back to their house due to the evacuation order, but kept a close eye on their place through a home security camera app. it was safe, but watching the fire move across the ridge was beyond stressful. >> i'm trying to do mindfulness, you know, i i'm a psychotherapist. i teach all my clients. listen, don't worry. stay in the moment. and i'm trying to practice what i preach. >> we saw a long line of neighbors sitting in their cars near highway four, waiting for the green light to return home. >> the police said that we were not letting anyone up until they reopened the streets. we have no idea when that will be. >> well, that evacuation order was downgraded earlier this evening, allowing people to return home. fire officials say

that, no structures were lost. a cause of the fire is under investigation tonight. live in bay point, cornell. bernard. abc seven news. all right. >> cornell, thank you for that. and breaking news in alameda county as well, where a fast moving fire is out of control in sunol. the creek fire has burned 577 acres so far near welch creek and calaveras roads. it began today around 4 p.m. and is 0% contained. crews from the air and ground are working to knock down those flames tonight. an evacuation of the sunol regional wilderness park is in place and structures are threatened in the south bay, a small fire is burning in santa clara county, not far from the lexington reservoir. >> this fire near los gatos creek in the alder croft heights area, put up a lot of smoke, but it burned just one acre, so it was not a big deal. firefighters are making progress. no buildings are threatened. evacuation warnings were issued, but later lifted. firefighters are making progress on a fire burning along the altamont pass.

it is 80% contained tonight. it has burned nearly 400 acres. the flames were reported just before 10:00 last night near north flynn road, just outside of livermore. cal fire says the cause is still under investigation, but the firefight is going pretty well. but the initial report from chp indicates a car caught fire on westbound 580, and the flames spread to the dry grass. our other breaking news is with the park fire. it is just enormous, burning more than 230,000 acres, making it the 14th largest wildfire in california state history. the flames have destroyed well over 100 buildings, some of them homes. it started northeast of chico in butte county and has spread into tehama county as well. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here. he spoke with several bay area fire crews. tim, who have headed north to try to help out. >> yeah. dan, now, one thing that's important to remember is that this fire is burning near the same spot where the camp fire burned back in 2018. that,

of course, was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. so those bad memories are still alive for so many of the people who live in this area. new video friday showing the devastation caused by the park fire. the fire has exploded in size since beginning wednesday and is burning just outside chico, not far from where the campfire burned just six years ago. the new blaze bringing back old fears from that time for local residents, many of whom are still recovering. >> we got our home and we've been working on it a lot lately, fixing it up and it's just we're at the verge of maybe losing all that. >> with containment still hovering near 0%, several fire departments here in the bay area have sent assistance up north. that includes the santa rosa fire department, who shared this video from the front lines up in that area. >> currently, you're having those 100 degree temperatures very low relative humidity. so very dry. hot, a lot of steep and rugged terrain. so getting access to some of those areas is very difficult. >> authorities believe the fire may have been set intentionally

and a suspect is now in custody. >> whether it's intentional or unintentional or accidental or whatever it may be, we still attack it the same, our biggest concern, obviously, is, fire and life safety. >> in addition to santa rosa, the san francisco fire department tells me they too, are trying to help lieutenant mariano elias says in addition to resources sent up on thursday, the department deployed six more firefighters friday night with a long fight ahead of everyone. lieutenant elias says the fire is a good reminder for people to be prepared. >> if you do have to leave in an instance, do you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle, can you get out? what is the quickest way to get out from the area? >> and for those directly impacted by this growing fire, some say all they can do is hope for the best people. >> as a faith based person, just you pray a lot. you pray for other people, not just for yourself and what you need. >> just to give you guys an idea of how quickly this fire is spreading. earlier today, cal fire said it's currently expanding at a rate of about 4 to 5000 acres every hour. i'm

live in the studio tonight. tim johns, abc seven news, 4 to 5000 acres an hour. >> no wonder it is so tough to stop, tim. thank you. now take a look at this satellite video from sierra research at colorado state university. shows the burn scar and the smoke plume that is coming from the park fire. just massive. >> that really is a live look outside tonight. and you see fog in san francisco. but it is a much different story for the firefighters dealing with those wildfires. >> they are facing heat and of course the wind. let's get a look at the conditions with abc seven weather anchor spencer christian spencer okay, dan. >> and we do have a lot to keep up with tonight with all these fires developing, i'm going to start with the what the point fire, which we started the program with temperature right now is 59 degrees in bay point. in that area of the fire, the relative humidity has really risen quite a bit, up to 75%. so those factors are encouraging, especially the relative humidity, because the dryness earlier was of course contributing to the spread of the fire. but the winds are

still strong and they're getting stronger. they're the sustained winds are out of the south at 16mph with gusts to 28mph. so obviously those winds are making it a bit challenging for the firefighters who are working so furiously to extinguish this fire and control this fire. now let's move along to the park fire, which we just showed you a satellite image. but mine right now is apparently not capturing the smoke. let's see if we can get this going here. we say, i don't know if it has to do with the hour of the night or not, but we've got the location, right? of course. it's right there. north of chico. the tremendous, massive, massive plume of smoke coming out of this fire is generally moving towards the northeast up toward susanville, which you see off to the right there. the winds have generally been out of the southwest, which is why the smoke is being carried to the northeast, up in over a great portion of the northern sacramento valley and the northern sierra. that smoke is not coming in our direction. so at the moment it's having no impact on bay area weather or

air quality. i'll have a look at our complete accuweather forecast coming up in just a few minutes. dan and ama okay, spencer, thanks very much. >> now remember you can track wildfires across the state as well as air quality with our interactive wildfire tracker. just go to abc seven news.com/fire map. >> two people died in a crash after going over a cliff at devil's slide today. chp says the single car crash happened around 1115 this morning. both sides of highway one were shut between pacifica and montara as crews rappelled down to the beach and found the people dead inside. the car landed more than 300ft down the embankment. the road has since reopened, but another closure is set for tomorrow. from 8:30 a.m. to noon to try to recover the second victim. the cause of the crash is under investigation. oakland mayor sheng tao is backing governor newsom's request for the city to revise its policy on police pursuits. governor newsom sent a letter to oakland city officials urging them to update the policy put into place in 2014. the governor says chp officers who are now patrolling

oakland streets observed suspects, quote, fleeing with impunity because they know they won't be chased. mayor tao opted not to answer our questions, but released a video statement calling on the police commission to take action. >> we must be in line with our policies, with other jurisdictions so that we can ensure that our community is safe. >> under its current rules, oakland officers can only launch a pursuit if there's reasonable suspicion that a person has committed a violent forcible crime or a crime with a gun, or if there is probable cause that the person has a gun. critics say there's no data showing that police pursuits do anything to stop crime or solve crimes, but they do increase the danger for people on the streets. >> medical issues are forcing san francisco's fire chief, janine nicholson, to retire. nicholson will leave her post at the end of august for what she describes only as unforeseen medical issues. nicholson was the second woman and the first openly gay person to lead the department. the 30 year

hand over communications between the two groups and other individuals. millbrae citizens have voted to recall the city's vice mayor and a council member. >> some residents are fighting a plan to convert a la quinta inn into permanent supportive housing. the recall campaign claims vice mayor maurice goodman and council member angelina colon failed to properly represent their electorate when they supported the hotel conversion in the north bay. one of the largest wine producers in the country has filed for bankruptcy. santa rosa based vintage wine estates has more than 30 wine and spirit brands. the news comes as a shock to the industry. experts say wine sales could be impacted by a number of things. >> boomers are drinking less and i think that's probably the bigger effect and we're seeing, you know, people that have been the main driver behind wine consumption and they are starting to pull back, whether it's because they haven't have wine in their cellar or because they have health reasons, maybe you know, in the wake of a very kind of shocking, you know, time for the world, people are

reassessing how they're living and the way they're living. there's also a younger generation. i think that's still figuring out life. and maybe hasn't discovered wine and wine culture. >> most of their products are in the 15 to $20 range, and we're told the lower priced wine market is struggling the most. industry leaders say more vineyards could file for bankruptcy. >> people in the south bay can get a look and a taste of vietnamese culture. at an event in san jose this weekend. tonight, the city hosted the first story road night market outside grand century shopping mall. it's similar to outdoor markets popping up in other bay area cities. a showcase for street vendors selling food and other merchandise. there's also live music and cultural performances. it's a celebration of san jose's large vietnamese community. >> it's 49 years in the making as your council member, i am so happy to make this happen. for the vietnamese community to show our pride and our culture. >> everyone had a blast down there tonight. the story road night market will continue tomorrow from four until 10 p.m.

at the same location, of course, and then again september 6th and seventh and october 11th and 12th. and heads up here, the san francisco marathon. is this sunday. tens of thousands of runners are set to participate starting early in the morning. the 26 mile loop winds through a mainly the northern part of the city. they'll start at mission street and the embarcadero at 5:15 a.m. as i said bright and early, expect to see some street closures and public transit rerouted. the f and n lines, plus a bunch of different bus routes will be affected. you can find a full list of the service changes on muni's website. >> now to a story about a dog lost and found an unhoused man found the dog and gave him a little extra tlc until it could be reunited with its owner. but as abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn found out, there's even more to the story. >> you like your blanket, you're going to take that outside? >> bob eccles of san francisco walks his two dogs, wardy and taylor, often. wherever the dogs go, they have a gps tracker on

them. but last saturday, the dogs were staying with a pet sitter and wardy got loose. here's the escape captured on ring camera video. >> he escaped from our pet sitters house. ten minutes later, a lady captured him, but she grabbed the collars and he backed out and she kept the collars and ran off with his gps tracker. >> came off with one of those collars. he was missing for two days. eccles posted missing dog fliers all over the city and shared the information online. with the help of strangers, eccles kept tabs on where wardy was spotted. >> he runs all over the mission district. he crosses market street, he goes to hayes valley ward. >> he ended up in the tenderloin. eccles says an unhoused man found the dog at this park off eddie street. >> the homeless man bought him a little crate, a blanket, a pad, food, dog toys and kept him for two days. this is a man who has nothing and he lives in this

park. and he took care of our little boy right after wardy went missing. >> another dog walker actually spotted him. >> i noticed he had no owner or no collar and he took off down the street. >> monique lee posted about it online and two days later got a call from a different dog walker who saw wardy and a man at a bus stop. that dog walker approached the man and morty. the woman showed the man the missing posters and explained that wardy had run away. the man handed over the dog and that's when he said, here, take the dog and you have to take the blanket because he loves this blanket. now woody's home again. >> see, there's your blanket. >> as for eccles, he wants to find the kind hearted man who gave wardy so much. >> just the kindness of somebody like that to do that when i'm sure he has a lot of other things on his mind in san francisco. >> suzanne fawn, abc seven news. >> sweet story, sweet happy ending. >> yes. all right, time to get a

check on our weather. yeah. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is back with a full forecast. >> talked about conditions on the fire lines, of course, but also now our weekend weather. >> spencer that's right. the weekend is going to be even cooler than today was. and today was pretty cool. looking at the satellite radar composite image, you may notice the absence of a marine layer. right now. we had a very deep and vigorous one earlier. it has dissipated, but it is going to reform. we still have some low clouds out there and they'll develop and redevelop during the overnight hours. we still have a pretty gusty and breezy conditions across the bay area right now, especially near the coast. not quite so strong these gusts as they were earlier in the evening, but they're pretty vigorous and we still have a sharp difference between temperatures from last night at this time and temperatures right now 17 degrees cooler in concord than at this time last night. 14 degrees cooler in livermore. as you get closer to the coast and the bay, you see that the difference is not quite so great, but still cooler in all areas. here's a live view of the from the exploratorium camera. looking back at a portion of the cityscape here in san francisco, 55 degrees here in the city right now, 59 at oakland. we've

got 60 at hayward and san jose, 59 at redwood city and half moon bay, 55 degrees looking across the bay from emeryville right now, you see just a little thin bit of haze out there. so again, the marine layer is going to redevelop overnight. it's 56 degrees right now at both santa rosa and napa, 52 at petaluma, upper 50s at fairfield, concord and livermore. let's move along and take a look at our forecast headlines. the cooldown continues into the weekend. temperatures. the forecast below average this weekend. the highs will be so again that cooling continues into next week. and the outlook for next week. minor warming is likely, but again, still below average range of temperatures overnight. we'll see that marine layer redevelop. there will be lots of patches of drizzle or some sprinkles moving even onshore and across the bay and the wee hours of the morning. there may be some damp spots greeting you if you're an early morning riser, but by midday we'll see dry conditions and increasing sunshine overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. highs tomorrow about 60 at the coast,
