at six. >> multiple fires burning out of control. this morning here in the bay area, a grass fire roaring right next to people's homes. the changes overnight on acreage and evacuations, and the largest wildfire in the state right now is growing fast. you're looking at new video of the park fire this morning. our local firefighters heading up north to help put out these flames. plus, an east bay man facing charges related to fire bombing. how the attack was reportedly tied to pro-palestinian protests. good morning everybody. it's saturda, july 27th. lisa is here and it's looking gloomy out there. >> yeah, it is the heat relief continues. we have mist and drizzle this morning, so definitely needed the wipers out there and the fog is banked up all along the coast. we have cloudy skies all the way through the delta. breezy winds up to 26 miles an hour. look at this. this is from mount tam. you can see the depth of the marine layer quite tall there. 56 downtown. it is 60 in oakland with 61 and cloudy skies. in san

jose. the clouds out towards walnut creek. breezy winds in concord up to 25 miles an hour, 59 degrees. there with 52 in petaluma. so compared to yesterday, it's 4 to 5 degrees cooler from san jose to livermore, a little milder up in the north bay. there's a look at the breeze at 22 miles an hour in oakland. and as we look at the next several hours, temperatures in the mid 70s throughout the afternoon, our inland valleys. so that would bring us down another at least ten degrees inland, 60s around the bay shore with limited clearing, cloudy at the coast. and will we see a warm up? we will. i'll tell you when and how much in a few minutes. stephanie. >> lisa. thank you. developing news now. some east bay residents are back home this morning after a fire prompted evacuations last night. we're talking about the point fire burning in bay point. it started off of vohra road, very close to people's homes. and you can see some of those homes threatened by the fire covered in retardant. the bay point fire

has grown to over 460 acres and is currently 20% contained. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to people who had to evacuate all in a sudden when i'm in the restroom, i look in the window and i saw dark smoke coming from the house right in front of me, eleanor schwartz says. >> behind that smoke was a fast moving wall of flames marching toward her bay point neighborhood. friday afternoon, she grabbed her dog, sophie, and was ready to make a run for it. when she and her car got doused with retardant from a firefighting aircraft. >> policeman was out there and we all got drenched with that red stuff, and that's when i decided to leave. >> acres and acres of dry grass. creating the perfect recipe to fuel the fire. contra costa fire says it started near the shooting range off évora road and quickly spread. carried by strong winds. >> fire got into some light, flashy fuels and the wind took it from there. the winds today were, i believe, right around

14mph out of the west uh- but up on the ridge tops and up on the hilltops, they seem to blow a lot harder than that. sky seven showed the firefight unfolding. >> you can see how close the flames came to this neighborhood near driftwood drive. how scary is this afternoon? been >> my heart right now is going 10,000 miles a minute. >> denise and robert tavares couldn't get back to their house due to the evacuation order, but kept a close eye on their place through a home security camera app. it was safe, but watching the fire move across the ridge was beyond stressful. >> i'm trying to do mindfulness, you know, i i'm a psychotherapist. i teach all my clients. listen, don't worry, stay in the moment. and i'm trying to practice what i preach. >> we saw a long line of neighbors sitting in their cars near highway four, waiting for the green light to return home. >> the police said that, we we're not letting anyone up until they reopened the streets. we have no idea when that will be. >> cornell. bernard, abc seven news. >> now, if you live in that

area, those evacuations have been downgraded to warnings. but emergency officials do tell us residents to stay prepared in case that changes. we do know fire authorities say that cause is still under investigation. also in alameda county, there's another fast moving fire in sunol. the creek fire has burned over 570 acres near welch creek and calaveras roads. it started around 4 p.m. yesterday and is currently 0% contained. crews are working to knock down those flames, and we do know there are several evacuations in place at the sunol regional wilderness park. now to the largest wildfire burning in our state. this morning, the park fire has burned more than 307,000 acres in butte county and tehama county. it's near the same area where the camp fire burned back in 2018. that fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. this morning, the park fire is

currently 0% contained. abc seven news reporter tim johns spoke to bay area fire crews who are helping battle this one. >> new video friday showing the devastation caused by the park fire. the fire has exploded in size since beginning wednesday and is burning just outside chico, not far from where the camp fire burned just six years ago. the new blaze bringing back old fears from that time for local residents, many of whom are still recovering. >> we got our home and we've been working on it a lot lately, fixing it up, and it's just we're at the verge of maybe losing all that. >> with containment still hovering near 0%, several fire departments here in the bay area have sent assistance up north. that includes the santa rosa fire department, who shared this video from the front lines up in that area. >> currently, you're having those 100 degree temperatures, very low relative humidity. so very dry. hot, a lot of steep and rugged terrain. so getting access to some of those areas is very difficult. >> authorities believe the fire may have been set intentionally

and a suspect is now in custody. >> whether it's intentional or unintentional or accidental or whatever it may be, we still attack it the same, our biggest concern, obviously, is uh- fire and life safety. >> in addition to santa rosa, the san francisco fire department tells me they too, are trying to help lieutenant mariano elias says in addition to resources sent up on thursday, the department deployed six more firefighters friday night with a long fight ahead of everyone. lieutenant elias says the fire is a good reminder for people to be prepared. >> if you do have to leave in an instance, do you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle, can you get out? what is the quickest way to get out from the area? >> and for those directly impacted by this growing fire, some say all they can do is hope for the best people. >> as a faith based person, just you pray a lot. you pray for other people, not just for yourself. and what you need. >> tim jonze, abc seven news. >> now, to give you an idea of how quickly this fire is spreading, cal fire said yesterday it's expanding at a rate of about 4 to 5000 acres an hour. and take a look at this

satellite video from sierra research at colorado state university shows the burn scar. and you can see that giant smoke plume from this park fire. you can track wildfires across the state, as well as air quality with our interactive wildfire tracker. just go to our website, abc seven news.com/fire map to the peninsula. now. this morning, crews will continue their recovery efforts near highway one at devil's slide after a deadly crash yesterday. officers say two people were in a car when it went over a cliff and landed more than 300ft down an embankment. they say the victims were found dead inside the car near highway one between pacifica and montara. closures will be in place today from 830 this morning to noon in that area. and today, crews will also try to recover the body of that second victim. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. we're also following new developments in an arson case at uc berkeley. a

federal grand jury has indicted an east bay man with firebombing a police car. the u.s. attorney's office shared these photos, accusing casey goonan of putting molotov cocktails underneath a uc berkeley patrol car. it happened on june 1st amid pro-palestinian rallies on campus. the 34 year old pleaded not guilty, and the suspect's lawyer believes the investigation was political in nature. he says. he told abc seven news last month he thinks investigators want to place blame on the suspect because of his opposition to the israel-hamas war. as we head to break now, let's check in with lisa. how's it looking out there? >> pretty gray. we have the drizzle along the coast and a view of alcatraz this morning where it's 56 degrees. breezy. winds across the bay in oakland, and the cool down continues by another ten degrees for some of you. i'll be back with my full accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. lisa, thank you. >> also ahead, more calls for oakland to change its pursuit

revise its police pursuit policy. newsom sent a letter to oakland city officials. he's urging them to update the policy originally put in place in 2014. the governor says chp officers who are now patrolling oakland's streets observed suspects are, quote, fleeing with impunity. that's because they know they won't be chased. mayor tao opted not to answer our questions directly, but did release a video statement calling on the police commission to take action. >> we must be in line with our policies with other

jurisdictions, so that we can ensure that our community is safe. >> under its current rules, oakland officers can only launch a pursuit if there's reasonable suspicion that a person has committed a violent forcible crime or a crime with a gun, or if there's probable cause that person has a gun. critics say there's no data showing that police pursuits do anything to solve crime or stop crime, but they do increase the danger for people on the streets. now, this comes as we're tracking new developments in the recall against mayor tao. a judge has recused herself from the case brought by the oakland public ethics commission. no reason was given. judge julius spain also vacated a ruling earlier this week in favor of oust the group backing the recall, the public ethics commission filed the suit in order to get oust and another group to comply with subpoenas. they're calling for communications to be released between the two groups and some other individuals. we're also following another recall effort

on the peninsula, millbrae citizens voted to oust the city's vice mayor and a council member. some residents are fighting a plan to convert a la quinta inn into permanent supportive housing. the recall campaign claims vice mayor maurice goodman and a council member failed to properly represent their electorate when they supported this hotel conversion in the north bay. now one of the largest wine producers in the country, has filed for bankruptcy. santa rosa, based vintage wine estates has over 30 wine and spirit brands. the news comes as a shock to the industry. experts say wine sales could be impacted by several things. >> boomers are drinking less and i think that's probably the bigger effect. and we're seeing, you know, people that have been the main driver behind wine consumption and they are starting to pull back, whether it's because they haven't have wine in their cellar or because of health reasons, maybe, you know, in the wake of a very kind of shocking, you know, time for

the world. people are reassessing how they're living and the way they're living. there's also a younger generation. i think that's still figuring out life. and maybe hasn't discovered wine and wine culture. >> most of their products are in the 15 to $20 range, and we're told the lower priced wine market is struggling the most. right now. industry leaders say more vineyards could file for bankruptcy in the south bay. key stakeholders came together to talk about one of the biggest issues impacting all local communities. we're talking about affordable housing. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes tells us some of the ideas being discussed. >> san jose is in the top ten, but it's on a list. most would rather not see it on at all. >> san jose was ranked as the fourth least affordable metro area in the world, behind hong kong, sydney and vancouver. >> that's according to the annual demographia international housing affordability report. the lack of affordable housing isn't an issue. isolated to san jose. >> we all know what's happening in the south bay, and it's kind of a warning sound for the rest of the bay area, the rest of

california. and you know what? my work in the united states congress, other members are feeling it, too. >> across the country, federal home loan, bank of san francisco, which said it devotes profits to affordable housing projects, hosted this roundtable meeting to talk affordable housing solutions. >> we get people to start thinking about it's not about passing a bill in congress. it's about what happens locally, what happens at the county or city level, and then maybe the state level as well on hand government officials, local leaders and real estate and nonprofit organizations. >> so what are solutions? look like? san jose city council member arjun batra says more mixed income housing instead of buildings with only affordable housing is needed. >> building market rate properties have mixed use in mixed income properties. give subsidy to any and everybody deserving the roundtable discussion comes after governor newsom issued an executive order requiring state agencies to prioritize clearing homeless encampments. >> it also puts pressure on local governments to do the

same, batra said. having affordable housing solutions sooner than later will keep people from becoming or staying homeless. >> affordable housing requires too much money. it's too bureaucratic. it takes too long to develop at the federal level. >> congressman panetta says he's at work on legislation that uses the tax code to incentivize construction and development of affordable housing, along with tax credits for middle income home buyers and renters. all of us have to come together and have this type of conversation to see where we can play a role, and that's why we're here today in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> new this morning, south bay schools could be getting an upgrade if this new ballot measure is approved by voters. it would also provide employee housing. our media partners, the mercury news reports this decision came in a surprise special meeting. san jose unified school district's board of trustees unanimously approved placing a nearly $1.2 billion bond measure onto the november ballot. now, if passed, the

money would go towards upgrading and repairing facilities across the south bay's largest public school district and to create affordable housing for both teachers and staff. here in san francisco, the marathon is tomorrow. tens of thousands of runners are set to participate, starting early in the morning. the 26 mile loop winds mostly through the northern part of the city. they'll start at mission street and the embarcadero at 5:15 a.m, so you can expect street closures in that area. and of course, public transit will be rerouted as well. you can find a list of the service changes over on muni's website. and as we were talking earlier, lisa, the runners will certainly be escaping the heat for this race with all that fog that's underway. right? >> and even in our inland valleys today, just in the 70s. so the deck of low clouds, the marine layer all the way to the east bay, over 2000ft, some areas 2500ft, and the drizzle at the coast. so a system is moving through california and nevada,

allowing for a return to a really generous marine layer. so that's some good news. eventually it will reach into the sacramento valley. but all those advisories for the heat have been lifted into the sacramento san joaquin valley. the cooldown on the way for everyone, but more pronounced here in the bay area yesterday. and further today as today will be the coolest day out of the next seven. so as we look outside from mount tam son was up at 608. it sits at 822. that's 14 hours, 13 minutes of daylight and looking at the current numbers in a narrow range with 55 half moon bay, 56 in san francisco, low 60s hayward and san jose. and from our exploratorium camera. it is gray. not a whole lot of sun for san francisco today. 57 in napa it is 59. in concord, 55 in santa rosa and emeryville. right now. so the cool down continues today. cooler than tomorrow, adding just a few degrees for your sunday, but it will still be below average 70s today.

warmest locations 80s tomorrow. and then looking at a slow warming trend as we get into next week. so there's a look at the fog, the drizzle, all the way into the east bay, the breezy winds from concord, the delta and then as it pulls back 3:00, it kind of gets halted. you can still see the clouds around marin county, the peninsula, san mateo, over into the east bay. so not everyone getting in on the clearing. and then it's a quick inland push again for the overnight hours. 7:00 tomorrow, cloudy, drizzly, and then pulling back just a little bit further. so we should warm up a few more degrees for sunday. as for the breezy winds, they're with us each and every day as the fog retreats. highs on monday will come up a few degrees into the mid 80s. here you notice 70s around the bay into your tuesday, just a few numbers into the low 90s out by the delta. otherwise it's a pleasant day with temperatures once again coming up to near average. but as we get into wednesday, this is where we're

going to see some of the heat return through calistoga. the delta. antioch. not too bad. low to mid 90s and you see the 70s arriving across the bay shore. so your highs today from the 60s, san francisco and oakland with just some limited clearing, you can see how we stay kind of cloudy here. upper 60s in fremont. how about those upper 70s by the delta. so we cool down about ten degrees yesterday. another 10 to 15 degrees today. and as you look at the overnight lows we're in the 50s with more fog and drizzle at the coast. the accuweather seven day forecast. so temperatures below average today 60s and 70s. and as we get into your sunday, just a little bit of warming. and that will take us through the beginning of the week middle of next week

gaining the upper hand in another east bay fire. the progress being made along the altamont pass. good morning everybody. thank you for being with us this half hour. and lisa, hopefully all this mist and drizzle is going to be helping efforts. yes. >> the temperatures coming down, relative humidity way up the breeze though that's certainly going to be with us again. yesterday it was quite windy. we had wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour in oakland right now. over 20 miles an hour. and look at sfo. it was 84 in redwood city yesterday. so the cooldown was 70s for you. maybe even some 60s temperatures starting out in the 50s in san francisco, 55 half moon bay. it is 61 with the clouds in san jose, and this is a familiar picture we'll see day after day. a cloudy golden gate bridge 55. santa rosa 59 by the delta. so mr. drizzle. drizzle is at the shoreline 4 to 5

degrees cooler from san jose to livermore. it's milder in the north bay. there's a look at those breezy winds right on through the delta and the cloud cover. it's going to take a while to retreat, so as we go through about ten 11:00 we have sunny skies low to mid 70s inland. and then by later on in the afternoon where the clouds stick around. just in the 60s, stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. and the south bay a small fire is burning in santa clara county not far from the lexington reservoir. the water fire near los gatos creek in the aldergrove heights area. as you can see, put up a lot of smoke, but only burned one acre. fire crews are making progress and thankfully no buildings are threatened. evacuation warnings were issued yesterday but have since been lifted and firefighters are making progress on a fire burning along the altamont pass. it's 80% contained as of this morning and has burned nearly 400 acres. the flames were reported thursday night near north flynn road, just outside of livermore. cal

fire says the cause is under investigation. an initial report from chp shows a car caught on fire on westbound i-580, and the flames spread to the grass. new developments nearly two weeks after conflicting accounts about the assassination attempt, the fbi now confirms former president donald trump was in fact struck in the ear by a bullet before this announcement, law enforcement, including fbi director christopher wray, said it was unclear if trump's injuries were caused by a bullet or shrapnel. shrapnel are small pieces of a bullet. now to your voice. your vote. former president trump is back on the campaign trail. this weekend. mr. trump addressed the crowd last night in west palm beach, florida. he took aim at vice president kamala harris for her alleged plans to pack the supreme court. he also accused her of betraying israel for not attending prime minister benjamin netanyahu's address to congress earlier in the week. now, new polling shows vice

president kamala harris and mr. trump tied this six days after president biden's exit from the race. a wall street journal survey shows trump leading harris 49 to 47%, and that's within the margin of error of plus or -3.3%. trump held a six point lead over mr. biden before his exit. harris leads trump, 45, to 44% when robert f kennedy jr and other independent and third party candidates are included. california congressman and u.s. senate candidate adam schiff is in the bay area for his own campaign events this weekend. he sat down with us to discuss several topics, including this week's washington, d.c, visit by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and schiff explained why he did not join some of his fellow democrats in congress who boycotted netanyahu's address. >> i've never boycotted a an address before congress, and i also have respect for the state to state relationship between

the united states and israel. i think it's a very important alliance for us. but i have deep disagreements with the prime minister, and there are times, many times over the last nine months, where it has appeared that the prime minister believes it's politically advantageous for him in his right wing coalition to pick a fight with president biden. >> schiff also talked about the democrats new presidential candidate. he was one of the house members who prosecuted former president trump in his impeachment trial. he says the strategy that led to the impeachment might help kamala harris's campaign. in the lead up to the election. >> what i ended up pivoting to in the impeachment case was moving away from strictly reliance on what he was charged with. in that case, it was withholding hundreds of millions of dollars from ukraine to extort that country into helping him cheat in an election to focusing on his patent, unfitness for office, the fact that he can't tell right from wrong, the fact that he, is a

website, abc seven news.com/election. we're also following new developments overseas. israel's military issued new evacuation orders for residents in southern gaza, specifically khan younis. it's the second evacuation order this week. this comes after the idf launched an operation on monday targeting hamas militants in the area. the hamas run gaza health ministry says at least 70 people were killed in airstrikes at the start of this operation. and new this morning, at least 30 people have died after an israeli airstrike hit a school in gaza. according to civil defense workers, thousands of people were sheltering in that facility. still to come this morning, a local deputy speaking about sexual harassment involving the san mateo county sheriff's office. her story as she sits down for an interview for the first time. and a live look outside from our exploratorium camera. you see our friend there today paying a visit. we'll see you back here

nicely this morning at 638. now to a story from the abc seven news i-team. the only female member of the san mateo county sheriff's swat team is about to receive what could be a record settlement for a sexual harassment case. the county is paying the enormous amount of $8 million, but it's not admitting fault. the i-team's dan noyes talks to corinne barker for her first interview, and i went through uc berkeley as a pre-med student and was working as an emt at the time, 32 year old corinne barker told me. >> in this exclusive interview that she studied to be a doctor, but she became drawn to law enforcement. >> i had a change of heart. i started doing ride alongs and i just loved it. i loved that you could be able to help somebody

on their worst day and make it maybe just a little bit better, or make them feel a little bit safer. >> she excelled as a san mateo county sheriff's deputy, receiving the department's medal of honor with her partner for rescuing a woman from a burning mobile home. >> and i was trying to hold my breath because it was pretty impossible to breathe. so i would come back out to take a breath and then go back in to look for her. >> then barker joined the department's swat team, the only female member of the unit. >> that was kind of my pinnacle. that's as soon as i became a deputy, i knew i wanted to be on swat. >> how long before the problems started? >> i now see that it was almost immediate. i think at the time i was very trying very hard to block it out. you know, i had worked so hard to get on that team and it was everything to me. you know, it was blood, sweat and tears that i put into it. >> the lawsuit against the county lists lewd comments

allegedly made by her swat team leader andre munoz, in front of other officers wanting to have sex with me, wanting to watch me do sexual things with other people, barker tells me the comments were relentless and that it got physical during a training session out of town in front of other swat team members, he wrestled me to the ground and reached his hand through my leg. >> you know, touching private areas. >> i reached andre munoz on a cell phone last night. he hung up. as soon as i said my name and referred me by text to his lawyer. jonathan murphy confirmed he's representing munoz in a personnel matter, but would not go into detail and would not offer any response to barker's lawsuit or the settlement. she told me her complaints to the county's hr department went nowhere. >> i really, really hoped something would come from that. and when it didn't, i was scared. >> then came my bat mobile investigation in july 2022, i

reported that then sheriff carlos bolanos sent a team of investigators to a garage in indiana to recover a replica batmobile for a friend. >> andre munoz was thought to be the leak, who leaked that information to me? yes to you? yeah. >> munoz was not my source, but bolanos sent it to internal affairs and corinne barker's sexual harassment complaints became part of that investigation when it stalled. barker resigned from the swat team and filed a lawsuit that is now being settled for $8 million. >> i think it gave me hope that women can stand up for themselves and be successful, that it is possible. >> i spoke with corinne barker's attorney. >> we were willing to settle the case for much less uh- much earlier in the litigation before so much testimony came out, zach franklin tells me. >> he began to press for a higher settlement amount after he learned that barker's colleagues on the swat team stood up for her and complained

about munoz behavior. the county denied the allegations, but relented. >> and i think they feared, and rightfully so, that if we went to trial, a jury could return a verdict that's much bigger than $8 million. >> a statement from current san mateo county sheriff christina corpus depicts the harassment as incidents that occurred years ago under the previous sheriff. it says corpus is committed to improving the culture of the department by prioritizing accountability and implementing higher standards, setting the tone that misconduct will not be tolerated under her watch. despite the treatment she received and how her complaints were ignored. karin barker wants to remain at the san mateo county sheriff's department. she's now a detective focusing on homeland security. >> i still love this career. i still love what we stand for. but you know, i'm the first to say that there are problems and we need to fix them. >> but, you know that there are women out there who are like, okay, you have the settlement. why don't you just get out of

from redwood city to half moon bay, the shark tank there, the gray sky and numbers all in the 50s from 55 santa rosa to 59 by the delta, with some breezy winds in the east bay. but as i said before, not as windy. the camera from okay over in the east bay so the cooldown continues into the weekend. looking at the temperatures below average today and tomorrow, even though we should gain maybe 3 or 4 degrees in the inland valleys. and then the warming trend getting underway next week around the bay and inland, there's a look how far reaching the fog is. and so the fog retreats, the winds kick up. it's not going to clear totally, though. it is a pretty robust marine layer. and so it's going to get hung up there over parts of the bay. it moves quickly back in overnight with the drizzle along the coast and then pulling back, lining up from san mateo through marin county for a cool and gray afternoon at the shoreline. there's a look at livermore. tomorrow we'll be

back into the low 80s for the next few days, and then as we get into the middle of the week, looks like some 90s arriving. not quite sure if we're going to bring on a strong ridge of high pressure, but maybe some subtropical moisture by the end of next week, 75 in san jose, the cooldown continues with just 70 near milpitas. and yesterday those mid 80s from redwood city dropping off to the low 70s. otherwise some 60s in san mateo with limited clearing. there downtown mid 60s. you were about 63 yesterday and up in the north bay it was a warm one, temperatures topping off to near 90. san rafael though down to the low 70s. it will be breezy and it will be a little while. so you get into that sunshine. look at berkeley and oakland could be stuck in the clouds for quite some time. upper 60s, union city and fremont. a cooler day for you and widespread 70s here from 76 in concord and livermore. the accuweather seven day forecast. notice the cooldown continues today.
