morning here in the bay area. a grass fire inching close to people's homes. the changes overnight on acreage and evacuations, and the largest wildfire in the state right now is also growing fast. you're looking at new video of the park fire this morning. our local fire crews heading up north to help. plus an east bay man facing charges related to firebombing. how the attack was reportedly tied to pro-palestinian protests. good morning everybody. it's saturday, july 27th. i'm stephanie sierra. lisa is here and with more on this cooldown. >> yeah, that's right. our visible picture here on our satellite shows not only the low clouds and fog hugging the shoreline, but you can see the smoke from the park fire up in butte county. so as we look a little bit closer, you'll notice that yeah, there is so much cloud cover there, a lot going on. this is the fog footprint all the way out towards the delta. but then there is a look at the smoke that is moving to the north and east into the northern sacramento valley. it is nothing but low clouds here from sfo where temperatures are

cool from the upper 50s to the low 60s, and from mount tam there. the breeze will be with us today, but it's not going to be as windy as yesterday. 59, in concord, 60. in livermore. we will see relative humidity increase. temperatures come down. they've already come down anywhere from 3 to 17 degrees. so that will put us in the mid 70s. throughout the afternoon. our inland valleys with sunny skies, partial sun around the bay shore only in the 60s and those 60s will spread towards the peninsula, san mateo, around oakland, and then at the coast. no clearing and cloudy skies, so we'll talk about a slight warm up for your sunday in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. developing news now evacuation orders downgraded to warnings. now some east bay residents are back home this morning. the point fire in bay point started off évora road dangerously close to people's homes. and you can see some threatened by the fire covered in retardant there this morning. cal fire says it's

burned more than 470 acres and is now 40% contained. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to people who evacuated. >> all in a sudden, when i'm in the restroom, i look in the window and i saw dark smoke coming from the house right in front of me, eleanor schwartz says. >> behind that smoke was a fast moving wall of flames marching toward her bay point neighborhood. friday afternoon, she grabbed her dog, sophie, and was ready to make a run for it. when she and her car got doused with retardant from a firefighting aircraft. >> policeman was out there and we all got drenched with that red stuff, and that's when i decided to leave. >> acres and acres of dry grass. creating the perfect recipe to fuel the fire. contra costa fire says it started near the shooting range off évora road and quickly spread. carried by strong winds. >> fire got into some light, flashy fuels and the wind took it from there. the winds today were i believe, right around

14mph out of the west uh, but up on the ridge tops and up on the hilltops, they seem to blow a lot harder than that sky. >> seven showed the firefight unfolding. you can see how close the flames came to this neighborhood near driftwood drive. how scary is this afternoon? been >> my heart right now is going 10,000 miles a minute. >> denise and robert tavares couldn't get back to their house due to the evacuation order, but kept a close eye on their place through a home security camera app. it was safe, but watching the fire move across the ridge was beyond stressful. >> i'm trying to do mindfulness, you know, i i'm a psychotherapist. i teach all my clients. listen, don't worry. stay in the moment. and i'm trying to practice what i preach. >> we saw a long line of neighbors sitting in their cars near highway four, waiting for the green light to return home. >> the police said that we were not letting anyone up until they reopened the streets. we have no idea when that will be. >> cornell bernard abc seven news. >> now, if you live in that are,

those evacuations have been downgraded to warnings, but emergency officials are telling residents to stay prepared in case any of that changes fire authorities also say the cause is still under investigation. also in alameda county, there's another fast moving fire in sunol. the creek fire has burned nearly 600 acres near welch creek and calaveras roads. it started around 4 p.m. yesterday and is now 5% contained. crews are working to knock down the flames and there are evacuations in place at the sunol regional wilderness park, now to the largest wildfire burning in our state this morning. the park fire has burned more than 307,000 acres in butte and tehama county. it's near the same area where the camp fire burned back in 2018. that fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in california history. and this morning, the park fire is 0% contained. abc seven news

reporter tim johns spoke to bay area fire crews who are helping battle the flames. >> new video friday showing the devastation caused by the park fire. the fire has exploded in size since beginning wednesday and is burning just outside chico, not far from where the camp fire burned just six years ago. the new blaze bringing back old fears from that time for local residents, many of whom are still recovering. >> we've got our home and we've been working on it a lot lately, fixing it up, and it's just we're at the verge of maybe losing all that. >> with containment still hovering near 0%, several fire departments here in the bay area have sent assistance up north. that includes the santa rosa fire department, who shared this video from the front lines up in that area. >> currently, you're having those 100 degree temperatures very low relative humidity. so very dry. hot, a lot of steep and rugged terrain. so getting access to some of those areas is very difficult. >> authorities believe the fire may have been set intentionally and a suspect is now in custody. >> whether it's intentional or

unintentional or accidental or whatever it may be, we still attack it the same, our biggest concern, obviously, is uh- fire and life safety. >> in addition to santa rosa, the san francisco fire department tells me they too, are trying to help lieutenant mariano elias says in addition to resources sent up on thursday, the department deployed six more firefighters friday night with a long fight ahead of everyone. lieutenant elias says the fire is a good reminder for people to be prepared. >> if you do have to leave in an instance, do you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle, can you get out? what is the quickest way to get out from the area? >> and for those directly impacted by this growing fire, some say all they can do is hope for the best people. >> as a faith based person, just you pray a lot. you pray for other people, not just for yourself and what you need. >> tim jonze, abc seven news. >> now, to give you an idea of how quickly this fire is spreading, cal fire says it's expanding about 4 to 5000 acres an hour. and take a look at this satellite video from sierra research at colorado state

university shows that burn scar and the huge smoke of plume of smoke that is from this park fire, and it's now california's eighth largest wildfire on record, according to cal fire records. you can track wildfires across the state as well as air quality with our interactive wildfire tracker. just head to our website abc seven news.com/fire maps to the peninsula. now this morning, crews will continue their recovery efforts after a deadly crash near highway one at devil's slide. officers say two people were in a car when it went over a cliff and landed more than 300ft down an embankment yesterday. they say the victims were found dead inside the car near the highway between pacifica and montara. closures will be in place today until noon in that area and today crews will be trying to recover the body of the second victim. the cause of this crash is still under investigation. we're also tracking new developments in an arson case at uc berkeley. a federal grand

jury has indicted an east bay man with firebombing a police car. the u.s. attorney's office shared these photos, accusing casey goonan of putting molotov cocktails underneath a uc berkeley patrol car. you see here. it happened on june 1st amid pro-palestinian rallies on campus, the 34 year old pleaded not guilty. now, the suspect's lawyer believes the investigation was political. in nature. he told abc seven news last month he thinks investigators want to place blame on the suspect because of his opposition to the israel-hamas war. all right, as we head to break, how's it looking outside, lisa? >> it's pretty gray out there with our marine layer firmly entrenched across the bay area. it is going to be limited. sun right here and temperatures once again just in the low, perhaps mid 60s. we have drizzle at the coast and just in the 70s inland. so that's a below average forecast for the end of july. it continues into the

revise its police pursuit policy. newsom sent a letter to oakland city officials. he's urging them to update the policy put into place in 2014. now, the governor says chp officers who are now patrolling oakland's streets observed suspects are, quote, fleeing with impunity. that's because they know they won't be chased. mayor tao opted not to answer our questions directly, but did release a video statement calling on the police commission to take action. >> we must be in line with our policies, with other jurisdictions, so that we can ensure that our community is safe. >> under its current rules, oakland officers can only launch a pursuit if there's reasonable suspicion that a person has committed a violent forcible crime or a crime with a gun, or if there's probable cause that person has a gun. critics say

there's no data showing that police pursuits do anything to stop crime or solve crimes, but they do increase the danger for people living on the streets. this comes as we're tracking new developments in the recall effort against mayor tao. a judge has recused herself from the case brought by the oakland public ethics commission. no reason was given. judge julius spain also vacated a ruling earlier this week in favor of oust the group backing the recall. the public ethics commission filed the suit in order to get oust and another group to comply with subpoenas. they're calling for communications to be released between the two groups and other individuals. new details about the items seized by the fbi during the june raid at mayor tao's oakland home, along with mayor telles phone and computer. federal agents also took the phone belonging to her boyfriend, andre jones. that's according to the chronicle. jones stopped using his phone shortly after the raids and

reportedly switched to a new number. as previously reported, the raids may be linked to a campaign contribution laundering scheme. no charges have been filed and tao has denied any wrongdoing. we're also following another recall effort on the peninsula. mowbray citizens voted to oust the city's vice mayor and a council member. some residents are fighting a plan to convert a la quinta inn into permanent supportive housing, the recall campaign claims. vice mayor morris goodman and a council member failed to properly represent their electorate when they supported this hotel conversion. and the north bay, one of the largest wine producers in the country, has filed for bankruptcy. santa rosa based vintage wine estates has over 30 wine and spirit brands. the news comes as a shock to the industry. experts say wine sales could be impacted by several things. >> boomers are drinking less and i think that's probably the bigger effect. and we're seeing, you know, people that have been

the main driver behind wine consumption and they are starting to pull back, whether it's because they have enough wine in their cellar or because they have health reasons, maybe, you know, in the wake of a very kind of shocking, you know, time for the world, people are reassessing how they're living and the way they're living. there's also a younger generation. i think that's still figuring out life and maybe hasn't discovered wine and wine culture for most of their products are in the 15 to $20 range. >> and we're told the lower priced wine market is struggling the most right now. industry leaders say more vineyards could file for bankruptcy in the south bay key stakeholders came together to talk about one of the biggest issues impacting all local communities. we're talking about affordable housing. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes tells us some of the ideas being discussed. >> san jose is in the top ten, but it's on a list most would rather not see it on at all. >> san jose was ranked as the fourth least affordable metro area in the world, behind hong kong, sydney and vancouver. >> that's according to the

annual demographia international housing affordability report. the lack of affordable housing isn't an issue isolated to san jose. >> we all know what's happening in the south bay, and it's kind of a warning sound for the rest of the bay area, the rest of california. and you know what? my work in the united states congress, other members are feeling it too. >> across the country, federal home loan bank of san francisco, which said it devotes profits to affordable housing projects, hosted this roundtable meeting to talk affordable housing solutions. >> we get people to start thinking about it's not about passing a bill in congress. it's about what happens locally, what happens at the county or city level, and then maybe the state level as well. >> on hand government officials, local leaders and real estate and nonprofit organizations. so what are solutions? look like? san jose city council member arjun batra says more mixed income housing instead of buildings with only affordable housing is needed. >> building market rate properties have mixed use in mixed income properties. give subsidy to any and everybody

deserving the roundtable discussion comes after governor newsom issued an executive order requiring state agencies to prioritize clearing homeless encampments. >> it also puts pressure on local governments to do the same, batra said. having affordable housing solutions sooner than later will keep people from becoming or staying homeless, affordable housing requires too much money. >> it's too bureaucratic. it takes too long to develop at the federal level. >> congressman panetta says he's at work on legislation that uses the tax code to incentivize construction and development of affordable housing, along with tax credits for middle income home buyers and renters. >> all of us have to come together and have this type of conversation to see where we can play a role, and that's why we're here today in san jose. >> zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> new this morning, south bay schools could be getting an upgrade if a new ballot measure is approved by voters. it would also provide employee housing. our media partners, the mercury news reports the decision came

in a surprise special meeting. san jose unified school district's board of trustees unanimously approved placing a nearly $1.2 billion bond measure onto the november ballot. now, if passed, the money would go towards upgrading and repairing facilities across the south bay's largest public school district and to create affordable housing for both teachers and staff. looking ahead, the san francisco marathon is tomorrow tens of thousands of runners are set to participate, starting very early in the morning. the 26 mile loop winds mostly through the northern part of the city. they'll start at mission and embarcadero right around 5:15 a.m. so you can expect those street closures to be in effect in that area, as well as public transit being rerouted. you can find a full list of the service changes on muni's website. and we've been talking about this cooling trend. the runners will certainly escape the heat tomorrow. you can probably feel it as you step out this morning.

we certainly did. yes. >> even yesterday in parts of the bay, the winds were quite gusty over 40 miles an hour at oakland. so we have less wind, more fog, and the breeze will be with us once the fog begins to pull back. but boy, it is taking its time behind me. a visible picture from sunrise to right now. so the past o three hours or so and you'll notice not only do we have the low clouds and fog all the way towards the delta, but you can see the smoke from the fire, the park fire to the north, and that is moving up through i-5, the northern sacramento valley. and it will continue to be an issue, of course, where it is such a huge fire. so as we go through the afternoon, the clouds will slowly peel back, but it's going to get as far as the bay bridge. it's kind of iffy. we could definitely see the clouds linger throughout parts of the bay today. 56 downtown, 59 in oakland. it is 62 in san jose, and so temperatures fairly

uniform with a blanket of low clouds. san jose there in the gray 60 by the delta. southwest winds have been up to about 25 to even 30 miles an hour. this morning in the 50s in santa rosa. and there's a look at the airport where it was in the 80s yesterday, redwood city in the 70s. today, the cool down continues into the weekend with below average temperatures today, tomorrow, tomorrow should be a little bit warmer. we will look for that warming trend to continue into next week. that's away from the coast. and if we go hour by hour, you'll notice that the clouds steadily peel back after about the noon hour and then stopping this at 4:00. they're not totally cleared here for the san mateo coast and around the bay shore. so that's going to keep temperatures in the 60s in parts of the bay. the fog comes back in earnest all the way across the bay into the sacramento valley. and then as it pulls back, it should reveal a little bit more sunshine into your sunday afternoon. and then we will see the temperatures respond as we get into by about

monday, where the numbers begin to move up through the 80s inland. but we are watching a ridge of high pressure that will potentially bring even warmer temperatures. our way. tuesday. we're into the perhaps 90 to low 90 degree range in our inland valleys, feeling a lot like summer. and then as we get into the first couple of days of august, looks like the heat could return. this is wednesday with temperatures in the mid 90s there. elsewhere, 60s and 70s. so as for your saturday, look for temperatures mainly in the 60s around the bay, mid 70s for you in san jose. look for 71 up in wine country and mid to upper 70s for you in santa rosa. overnight lows back into the 50s, mist and drizzle at the coast and the accuweather seven day forecast. we're cool today. 60s and 70s with slight warming for sunday, monday, little change and then our warming trend is pretty modest until we get to the end of the workweek, which begins a new month.

the recall involves liverwurst as well as several other types of deli meat products, according to the usda. a liverwurst sample from a maryland store tested positive for listeria. now, other deli products made on that same line are possibly being recalled. health officials say testing is underway to determine if the tainted sample is connected to a deadly multistate. listeria outbreak. you can find a complete list of the recalled products over on our website. abc seven news.com. the city of san francisco is taking action against the owners of a towing company whose truck tried to hook up a car, stopped at a traffic light with two people inside. now the city is

revealing that the owners of that company have a history of illegally towing vehicles. abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke to the city's attorney about what they found. >> almost a year since the san francisco city attorney's office began proceedings against auto towing, citing this company violated multiple state and local laws by illegally towing vehicles from private property. now, the city is taking a step further. >> we provided enough evidence such that auto towing could be permanently barred from doing business with the city for the next five years during their investigation, the city attorney's office found that the owners of auto towing are also the owners of two other towing companies. >> one of them is called specialty towing. in april, we reported on a towing company with the name specialty towing that tried to hook a vehicle waiting at a red light. >> there was a towing truck that had the name specialty towing that was engaged in what appeared to be criminal activity by attempting to take a car with

individuals in it. that investigation i know, is ongoing. we went to auto towing in san francisco's bayview neighborhood. >> their lot had two cars inside, but no one was in there. all right. so people in the area are telling us that they haven't seen anyone from auto towing here in months. we tried calling the number on their side. i'm luz pena with abc seven news. i'm looking for the owners of auto towing, a general operator said auto towing hasn't paid for the operator's service in months. turns out the supervisor for this district is well aware of this company. >> they would take cars from the address of record to another site and people would have to take longer to be able to locate their vehicles, which in the towing world increases the cost for you to get your car back. >> supervisor walton said there are several towing companies in san francisco known to perform illegal tactics. >> i'm glad that the city attorney has ended this practice for one towing company, and hopefully it resonates with the others.

on their worst day and make it maybe just a little bit better, or make them feel a little bit safer. >> she excelled as a san mateo county sheriff's deputy, receiving the department's medal of honor with her partner for rescuing a woman from a burning mobile home. >> and i was trying to hold my breath because it was pretty impossible to breathe. so i would come back out to take a breath and then go back in to look for her. >> then barker joined the department's swat team, the only female member of the unit. >> that was kind of my pinnacle. that's as soon as i became a deputy, i knew i wanted to be on swat. how long before the problems started? i now see that it was almost immediate. i think at the time i was very trying very hard to block it out. you know, i had worked so hard to get on that team and it was everything to me. you know, it was blood, sweat and tears that i put into it. >> the lawsuit against the county lists lewd comments allegedly made by her swat team

leader andre munoz, in front of other officers wanting to have sex with me, wanting to watch me do sexual things with other people, barker tells me the comments were relentless and that it got physical during a training session out of town in front of other swat team members, he wrestled me to the ground and reached his hand through my leg. >> you know, touching private areas. >> i reached andre munoz on a cell phone last night. he hung up as soon as i said my name and referred me by text to his lawyer. jonathan murphy confirmed he's representing munoz in a personnel matter, but would not go into detail and would not offer any response to barker's lawsuit or the settlement. she told me her complaints to the county's hr department went nowhere. >> i really, really hoped something would come from that. and when it didn't, i was scared. >> then came my bat mobile investigation in july 2022, i reported that then sheriff carlos bolanos sent a team of

investigators to a garage in indiana to recover a replica batmobile for a friend. >> andre munoz was thought to be the leak, who leaked that information to me? yes to you? yeah. >> munoz was not my source, but bolanos sent it to internal affairs and corinne barker's sexual harassment complaints became part of that investigation when it stalled. barker resigned from the swat team and filed a lawsuit that is now being settled for $8 million. >> i think it gave me hope that women can stand up for themselves and be successful, that it is possible. >> i spoke with corinne barker's attorney. >> we were willing to settle the case for much less uh- much earlier in the litigation before so much testimony came out, zach franklin tells me. >> he began to press for a higher settlement amount after he learned that barker's colleagues on the swat team stood up for her and complained about munoz's behavior. the

county denied the allegations, but relented. >> and i think they feared, and rightfully so, that if we went to trial, a jury could return a verdict that's much bigger than $8 million. >> a statement from current san mateo county sheriff christina corpus depicts the harassment as incidents that occurred years ago under the previous sheriff. it says corpus is committed to improving the culture of the department by prioritizing accountability and implementing higher standards, setting the tone that misconduct will not be tolerated under her watch. despite the treatment she received and how her complaints were ignored. corinne barker wants to remain at the san mateo county sheriff's department. she's now a detective focusing on homeland security. >> i still love this career. i still love what we stand for. but, you know, i'm i'm the first to say that there are problems and we need to fix them. but, you know that there are women out there who are like, okay, you have the settlement. >> why don't you just get out of law enforcement?

today. giants fans you can watch a doubleheader at oracle park and experience a country music concert with that same ticket. you can catch country music star tyler rich perform a private concert during the 45 minute break between games. first pitch against the rockies is at 405 this afternoon. the second game tentatively starts at 735 tonight. a portion of doubleheader ticket sales will benefit four h and ffa groups here in the bay area. lisa, how's it looking around that time? >> well, we've got a forecast for that in just a moment, but i want to call your attention right now to the visible satellite picture, which not only shows the extent the extent of the marine layer all the way through the delta, but you also can pick up on that 300,000 acre park fire and the smoke moving through the northern sacramento valley. also, the adjacent foothills. and is any of that smoke going to make it down to the bay area? well, it looks like the far northern portions of perhaps sonoma county could see a little bit of haze. this

is our forecast for the upper elevations. over 20,000ft that smoke aloft. so you can see how it kind of dips down there. but overall we've got pretty good air quality and a lot of cloud cover yet to clear. this is okay across the bay where you can see the clouds stacked up 56 degrees. san francisco 59. in oakland it is 62. in san jose and cloudy in san jose. as well, with temperatures elsewhere in the mid 50s in petaluma. the cool spot 60. in livermore we've had drizzle this morning and we have another shot at it later on tonight. through the overnight hours, the cool down continues into the weekend with temperatures below average today. and for sunday with a slow warming trend getting into next week. as we look at our inland valleys and around the bay shore. so back to the giants game. the rockies in town with low 60s. 4:00 mostly cloudy skies, a few peeks of sun, the breeze kicking up and then throughout the evening, dropping off to about 60 in the south

bay. it's a pretty nice day. once that sun comes out with low to mid 70s. from santa clara to san jose, look at all the clouds just clinging to the san mateo coast with upper 60s san mateo and palo alto. so big cool down for you. redwood city in the low 70s. it was in the low 60s yesterday in san francisco. not much changed today up in the north bay, we've got more 70s for wine country. that's a cool afternoon for late july. looking at about 74 in vallejo, you head over to the east bay and those clouds want to just linger through berkeley and orinda today with 60s, their 70s in orinda with 76, in concord and mostly sunny skies here. as we get through the afternoon. so big change from the upper 80s to near 90 yesterday. a lot of cloud cover tonight with that drizzle and the accuweather seven day forecast. so we are still cool into sunday and monday. we get into a little bit more of a warming trend by tuesday and then into wednesday

and thursday, temperatures will top off into the lower 90s inland, mid 70s around the bay. so it looks like we're getting into a more pleasant pattern after this big cooldown

piano series. it was such a hit last year, they've actually extended the duration of this series for ten days. in september, you'll be able to see the san francisco botanical gardens be transformed into a concert hall with full service bars. opening night is september 13th and performances will run until the 22nd. all right, here's a sweet story a san francisco man is looking for the good samaritan who cared for his dog, ward, after he went missing for two days. bob eichel says his two dogs, ward and taylor, were staying with a pet sitter when ward got loose last weekend. he was spotted all over the city before ward ended up in

the tenderloin. eichel says an unhoused man found ward at a park. >> a homeless man bought him a little crate, a blanket, a pad, food dog toys and kept him two days. this is a man who has nothing and he lives in this park, and he took care of our little boy. >> wow. well, a woman who knew ward was missing spotted him. and the man at a bus stop. she showed him the missing posters and explained that ward had run away and now eichel's wanted to find that kind hearted man who gave ward so much. he's a very cute pup. such a heartwarming story and i hope that bob gets reunited with that man one day so he can tell him thanks in person. >> yeah, that's really sweet. yeah, so, so sweet. all right. we have a nice looking accuweather seven day forecast because we are racing the heat certainly this weekend with high temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s and the clouds not
