>> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> and we'll start with the future of the oakland coliseum. it's seen sports dynasties, rock shows and countless other events over the years. but tonight, the biggest arena in the east bay is ready to begin a new chapter. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> the city of oakland is agreeing to a deal to sell its share of the coliseum complex site. of course, the oakland a's have their lease ending at the end of this season. >> revenue from the sale of the property is a big piece of oakland's budget plan. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has more on that and what this means for the town. jr >> dan, i'm in the first line of mayor tsingtao's statement. she addressed police and fire stations staying open, saying this is not a short term solution. had this deal not gone through, there was talk about lost public safety, jobs. the oakland coliseum site has been sold well. at least the city of oakland's half. according to

mayor shengtao. she released this pre-produced video clip in reaction to the sale. >> i'm really excited and i just want to thank everybody who worked day and night to ensure that this deal has gone through a deal between the city of oakland and the african american sports and entertainment group, the oakland athletics own the other half of the site, and there are still questions about when and if that 50% will be sold to. >> here's abc seven sports director larry beil. >> this deal has taken forever just to get to this point. now we have half of that land sold. the other half, i'm told, should be sold by john fisher and the a's. no. later than the end of this week. >> in a statement, mayor tao says it's a deal that will lead to a multi-billion dollar investment in east oakland, which will bring business opportunities, affordable housing tax revenue and community benefits for decades to come. >> how much of it is going to be

>> it's a double edged sword, and the only reason i say that is because, yes, the city absolutely needs the money from this transaction. on the other hand, aasg putting $100 million in john fisher's pocket helps his vegas effort, so it helps him get out of town while we're trying to develop something in town. >> the chronicle reports that these payments will be made to the city over a period of time, not in one large sum. mayor shengtao will have a press conference in oakland tomorrow at 10 a.m. to discuss this further. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> all right, j.r, thank you for that happening. now, we are tracking the wildfire emergency across several western states, including our own, the national interagency fire center says it's monitoring more than 100 active wildfires from california to colorado. and arizona. they burned more than 2 million acres combined. the park fire is now the sixth largest wildfire in california history. the massive

blaze is more than 12 times the size of san francisco. incredible new video gives you a firsthand look at the perspective from a north bay cal fire crew currently assisting in the firefight. more than 5300 personnel are coordinating in the response now. >> the fire has burned roughly 375,000 acres. containment is up to 14% tonight, but sadly, the number of homes lost is growing. cal fire now says the fire destroyed 165 buildings so far. the community of cohasset is the hardest hit, but ron ward's home survived as the flames moved in, he and his son stayed and managed to save their house. you've got a one of the largest fires now in in our history coming our way. >> so. and we knew it was going to be bad. we just didn't know how bad it was going to be. >> ron says his family just got

dropped by their insurance a month ago, so losing their home would have wiped out their life savings. but he says it's devastating to talk. so to see so many friends have faced such a loss. >> we're very blessed and we're glad that we were able to save our property. it just it's tough. there's a lot of those phone calls, a lot of people who have lost their homes, they haven't even been been able to get back to look at their homes. >> just so tough for so many. the man accused of starting the fire appeared in court for the first time today, ronnie dean stout. the second is facing a felony arson charge. the butte county district attorney says witnesses saw stout's car get stuck at the top of a hill and heard him revving the engine. prosecutors believe that's what sparked the fire when stout saw the flames, they say he pushed the car down a hill instead of calling for help. the d.a. says stout claims it was an accident. he is being held without bail and is due back in court on thursday. remember you can keep track of the fires burning across the state with our abc seven california wildfire

tracker. it gives you a full picture of the fires and the smoke spreading across the state. it's up for you right now on the front page of abc seven news.com. >> let's take a peek at our weather right now as we take a live look from our exploratorium camera. we have been getting a string of these cooler, cloudy nights. let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist lisa argen for more on how our tuesday is shaping up with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> lisa, you're right, we have an upper level system that has brought generous cloud cover, the low clouds, the fog and breezy winds. that's what's going to be key in our forecast for your tuesday. we've already clouded up in hayward. the peninsula and the south bay next hour. we're in the 60s and as we go through the overnight hours, we'll have mist and drizzle at the coast, cloudy skies inland and temperatures dropping into the 50s. now sunrise to about 10:00. we'll be looking at the clouds, but by about 11:00 will be clearing much of the east bay and will be in the 70s. it's going to take towards the early afternoon till we get sunshine

across the bay. but temperatures will come up maybe three degrees in our inland valleys. it's still another day of below average temperatures, but notice more mid 80s there towards the afternoon, 70s around the bay shore. and we'll be looking at those cool 60s in san francisco with limited sun in the afternoon, upper 70s in san jose. we will talk about a warm up for our inland valleys throughout the middle of the week, the weekend with my accuweather seven day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, lisa, thanks very much. let's turn to your voice. your vote. donald trump's vice presidential running mate has wrapped up his fundraising stop on the peninsula. ohio senator jd vance made his first bay area visit since being added to the republican ticket. vance's motorcade zipped past supporters lining the streets outside the four seasons hotel in east palo alto. >> jd is an amazing vice president who has always followed the policies of the republican party. his stance for us families, he's a great example for us as the families and people of america who love

this country. >> according to an invitation posted on the santa cruz county republicans website, guests paid up to $25,000 per person to attend the fundraiser. vance once worked in venture capital in san francisco, so he knows the area that's expected to make him a popular candidate among some local donors. >> i think that's good for silicon valley and somebody who understands the issues that are important to our startup communities, especially. >> vance has another stop at california this week. he'll be in the central valley on thursday. he'll attend a fundraiser in coalinga. >> as for vice president kamala harris's team tonight, they are making it clear they want to see former president trump on the debate stage. harris communications director, says the vp will be at the abc news debate on september 10th. with or without trump. trump told fox news he would probably end up debating harris, though he said he could, quote, make a case for not doing it. harris's list of potential running mates is

shrinking. north carolina governor roy cooper says he's taking himself out of consideration, though he still supports harris harris's campaign co-chair. michigan governor gretchen whitmer, told cbs news that harris is likely to announce her pick in the next week. as many predicted, the use of ai is already threatening the integrity of the election. most recently, elon musk shared a generated video mimicking the voice of vice president kamala harris. the post makes it seem like harris said things she actually never said. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here in studio with more on these dangers and what's being done about it. tim. >> yeah. ama. since musk shared the post on x on friday, it's been viewed over 100 million times. and while he clarified on sunday that it was satire, experts in the field argue carelessly. promoting content like this damages election integrity throughout the entire country. >> i come all harris and your democrat candidate for president. >> this fake artificial intelligence generated video of kamala harris has been widely viewed online since being shared

on x by tech billionaire elon musk. >> the clip, to which we added this disclaimer, used a cloning tool to copy the voice of vice president harris and pretend she's saying things she's actually never said. the video has renewed concerns over the use of ai in politics, and has gotten the attention of several bay area lawmakers. i think it was really unfortunate, uh- and i argue, irresponsible of elon musk to share the obviously deceptive deepfake of vice president harris. assembly member mark berman has been championing more regulations on ai generated material in california for years. a few months ago, he introduced a bill in the state legislature that would force social media companies to regulate this type of content. during election seasons, to be able to identify this content. >> and then when they do, either to block it entirely, if it's if it's extraordinarily nefarious and damaging, or to label it. >> berman isn't alone in his calls for more oversight, says tiffany lee. lee is an associate professor at the university of

san francisco and an expert in deepfake videos. >> but it's not just something that the platforms should do. the government should be taking some action, lee tells me. >> combating this type of content is about protecting election integrity, she says in a healthy democracy, it's critical for people to be able to have confidence that the material they see is real. >> people might actually vote based on what they see in a deepfake video, even if it's completely inauthentic. and that's dangerous in and of itself. >> assembly member berman says he's hopeful his bill will become law sometime over the next few weeks, taking steps to protect everyone, no matter which side of the political spectrum they may fall. >> voters want to believe in the integrity of our elections and the integrity of our democracy. and so i think this is something that has remarkable bipartisan support. >> now, assemblymember berman's bill is not the only one being considered in sacramento. currently in fact, several lawmakers have introduced similar bills at the capitol in recent months. just going to show you how seriously our officials are taking this issue. and for governor newsom, he

signaled he'll sign at least one of them. i'm in the studio tonight. tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thanks very much. a beloved east bay theater company believes the show must go on, but they can't do it without a lot of help. california shakespeare theater in orinda says if they don't raise $350,000 by august 1st this thursday, they may be forced to close and call off their production of as you like it. cal shakes has already built the sets and cast the actors for the show. the theater's executive director told us. the ticket sales and fundraising are just slow. little down a star alum, zendaya recently made a major donation, but it's not enough to keep the theater open. the theater launched a gofundme last week to try to close the gap. they've raised almost $27,000 so far, but a long way to go. >> next stop a safer ride. the latest sign of progress we are spotting from bart tonight. part of our abc seven news building a better bay area breakthroughs overdiagnosed and easily treated

investigation. the fbi says trump has agreed to be interviewed as a witness and a victim in the case. trump told fox news the interview is set for thursday. a portrait of the gunman is taking shape through more than 450 interviews. the fbi says they've learned the suspect was very intelligent, but reclusive. the fbi hasn't uncovered a motive in the shooting, but they believe the suspect had done extensive planning. >> president biden is making his case for major reforms to the u.s. supreme court. >> the courts being used to weaponize an extreme and unchecked agenda. this decision is a total affront to the basic expectations we have. the president says he wants to change the lifetime appointment for justices. >> he says a president should appoint a justice every two years, with justices being capped at serving 18 years on the high court. the president is also calling for a supreme court

binding code of conduct. experts say mr. biden is trying to address the risk that lifetime appointments create a political imbalance on the high court. >> lifetime appointments can sway the court dramatically in one direction or another. president trump, for example, had three appointments and totally changed the voting behavior of the current supreme court. this has happened sometimes in the past, but there are some presidents who've never had an appointment during their four year term. >> it's unlikely the current congress would approve any reform legislation by the end of biden's presidential term, but it's expected to become a topic of conversation. certainly, among the current candidates. >> tonight, caution from a major pediatrician group about a controversial and increasingly common procedure for newborns. the american academy of pediatrics says tongue ties may be overdiagnosed and too often treated with surgery. a tongue tie release surgery uses scissors or a laser to cut away tissue under a baby's tongue. proponents of the treatment say it can aid in their ability to

breastfeed, but the pediatrics group is suggesting more non-surgical options be considered. >> we're following the story of the push to make the rainbow pride flag an official landmark in san francisco's castro district. as we told you last night here at 11, the iconic flag flown above harvey milk plaza is the creation of the late artist gilbert baker. it was originally designed in 1978 for the gay freedom day parade, known as the san francisco pride parade. today. now, the full board of supervisors will vote on the landmark proposal with an amendment that the flag fly 24 over seven. >> as i understand it and others may speak to this, that was gilbert's firm intention, and has been the practice of the keepers of the flag installation these past decades. i'm asking to add this language just so it is very, very, very clear. >> the full board of supervisors will vote on the resolution in september. >> building a better bay area is

our mission here at abc seven. so tonight we want to highlight three breakthroughs for our community. we begin in san francisco, where health care workers are calling attention to their work supporting the transgender community. the san francisco community clinic consortium is planning a news conference tomorrow to highlight their work providing health services to trans people. this summer, san francisco officially became a sanctuary city for trans people. >> you're looking at our next abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough, more new bart faregates are up and operational. the these are at the seventh street side of the civic center station in san francisco. now the hope here is this style of gate will cut down significantly on fare evasion, improve safety, and be easier to maintain. bart is planning to install them systemwide by the end of next year. all right, our final abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough is a positive sign for our craft beer industry. our beer scene is booming and bucking national trends of closing breweries.

local craft breweries will open at least nine new taprooms this year. the chronicle reports. locations are planned for all across the bay area, with expansions by almanac brewing, headlands and more. plus, san francisco based anchor brewing is working on plans to reopen under new ownership. we'll keep tabs on that for you. yeah, definitely keep tabs, i get it. >> all right, let's check on our weather. all right. >> meteorologist lisa argen is here. hi, lisa. >> hi there. ama and dan. we are certainly in the middle of a cooldown. the culprit? this area of low pressure to the north of us. it has been giving us a generous marine layer, and it's already pushed into the peninsula. parts of the east bay and the south bay. and the marine layer will continue to fill into the north bay. but i want to get you updated on our air quality. the bay area. you may have noticed a little bit of haze today, but that is all being pushed to the east and you can see the fire up to the nort, creating the poor air quality between chico and redding. and

as we get into tuesday afternoon, it continues and this will move into the sierra nevada and we will be left with the good air quality with our onshore flow each and every day this week, despite the warm up that's coming, it's a modest warm up, 62 right now in fremont and gilroy. it is 63 in hayward, with the clouds filtering in. not too cloudy yet in the north bay, the temperatures are dropping quickly with the clear sky in the upper seconds, but the clouds will fill in there. so tomorrow the last mild or cool day below average before we see a warm up. a subtle one coming into play for our inland valleys, we'll get back into the 90s, and then we'll look for that heat to remain in our inland valleys. we will flirt with some upper 90s, but we're not going to see the hot weather we saw in early july. here's a look at our winds. once that fog retreats, we'll be looking at those winds kicking up to over 20 miles an hour, maybe 27 to 30 miles an hour through the delta. and that's going to keep going

each and every day with the ebb and flow of the low clouds and the fog. overnight lows with some mist and drizzle, we'll see temperatures in the 50s to the upper 50s. and then the clouds are going to hang on till about 9:00, and then they'll begin to retreat to the east. so look at wednesday when we get into the lower 90s, you'll notice that temperatures are staying comfortable across the bay. one of the warmer days into thursday. looking at the mid and upper 90s. and then you'll notice we knock off a few temperatures by friday. so we're definitely going to warm up a little bit above average. but not tomorrow. tomorrow once again below average but pleasant mid 80s arriving maybe about three degrees warmer than today in our inland valley 74 in fremont, upper 70s, napa and san jose. looking at the low 60s in half moon bay and the accuweather seven day forecast, we've got some upper 80s inland today, warmer slightly in the next few days will be in the mid to upper 90s as we get started for the weekend. the first weekend of august. and you'll notice we're kind of level out into the mid 90s, inland, mid
