beaming with pride. >> announcer: live in times square, this is good morning america. >> robin: this is good morning america. some remarkable stories coming out of paris. >> rebecca: really incredible stuff. lara is there for us tracking all the action. she's our flea market olympian as well. >> george: we're going to begin with the wild fire emergency in california. the park fire now the sixth largest fire in state history, larger than the entire city of los angeles. the man accused of starting the fire appeared in court. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, george. yeah, the park fire still raging out of control. about 14% contained this morning, as firefighters urgently race to completely contain this fire that has torched over 100 homes. this morning the park fire, now the sixth largest fire on record in california, still ablaze, forcing thousands of residents out of their homes. >> in your head, you're like, am i going to have something to go

home to? >> reporter: late monday, ronnie stout was charged with arson. >> he watched the fire develop under his car and then got in a position to push the car backwards into that gully. >> reporter: while conditions have improved, firefighters are still scrambling to put out spot fires like these, as you can see, they can spread quickly. also to contain the blaze before warm temperatures move in. both of their homes reduced to rubble. some priceless items miraculously surviving the flames. >> my baby picture. his baby picture. >> reporter: as the fire spread, a pet owner forced to leave two adult rottweilers and their four puppies behind, but this animal rescue group going above and beyond to get the four legged family to safety. >> i basically didn't have leashes. i just had food, water and i think a good attitude. that seemed to help us get these

guys back out of here. >> reporter: the 42-year-old man charged with arson insists the fire was an accident. he is scheduled to be back in court later this week, robin. >> robin: mola, our thanks to you. we're going to bring in ginger on the fires and the toxic smoke spreading. >> ginger: the park fire is only one of more than 100 large, uncontained wild fires burning across our country. this one year in colorado. there have been about 2,600 people served evacuation warnings saying, please get out. there's no containment on it. it's burned so far 950 acre. you see the near surface smoke. it's really bad in northern california into the rockies. the pacific northwest gets clearing thanks to a front that's coming through there. it will stay choking through part of utah, northern colorado, nevada and california. wanted to mention they're going to warm up big time. where that park fire is, 100 at the end of the week going into the weekend.

this is where the 100 pluses are right now. excessive heat warnings include kansas city, down to memphis. feels like temperatures could go to 113. that's going to stick around for days. >> george: now the race for the white house. vice president harris hits the campaign trail in georgia as she closes in on her pick for a running mate. chief white house correspondent mary bruce has the story. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. kamala harris is giving herself a week to announce her vp. this morning that list is narrowing. overnight one of the leading contenders to be kamala harris' running mate pulling his name from the short list. governor roy cooper saying this just wasn't the right time for north carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket. with the clock ticking, harris expected to announce her number two by august 7th. potentials like pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, are out stumping for harris and auditions for the job.

>> vice president harris has been battle tested. she's not only ready, she's damn ready! do you know who else knows she's ready? donald trump knows she's ready! and you know how i know this? 'cause he's afraid to debate her now. >> reporter: donald trump this morning still waffling on her agreement to debate in september, but insisting overnight that he's not afraid. >> if we're going to have a debate, you have to do it before the votes are cast. it's very important that you do that. so the answer is yes. i can also make a case for not doing it. >> reporter: privately his running mate admitting to donors over the weekend that running against harris instead of president biden is more challenging. according to audio obtained by "the washington post." >> we were given a political sucker punch. the bad news is that kamala harris does not have the same baggage as joe biden, kamala harris is a lot younger and kamala harris is obviously is

not struggling like biden did. >> reporter: harris summing up her opponents in one word calling them out as weird. >> donald trump has been resorting to some lies and some of what he and his running mate are saying just plain weird. >> reporter: she's leaning into the issue she hopes will define the choice facing voters come november, abortion rights, speaking out against the new six week abortion ban that went into effect in iowa, placing the blame squarely on trump after he appointed three of the supreme court justices who overturned roe v. wade. >> this ban will take effect before many women even know they're pregnant. what this means one in three women of reproductive age in america live in a state with a trump abortion ban. >> reporter: one of the states georgia. harris heading to the critical state where abortion is sure to be an issue. biden won the state by just 12,000 votes in 2020 but had been trailing trump in recent

week. the harris campaign hoping to build off her momentum to put the states back in play. now harris will be holding a big rally in atlanta, expected to be the largest event of the race so far. this morning her campaign is out with their first ad spending $50 million to blitz the air waves as they reintroduce her to voters. robin? >> robin: all right, mary. our thanks to you. investigation into the wing of one delta flight making contact with another plane, leading to significant delays for the flights at salt lake city's airport. our transportation correspondent gio benitez joins us now with more. good morning, gio. >> gio: hey, robin, good morning. these are exactly the kinds of incidents experts are so worried about. take a look at this image. you can actually see a piece of the tail that's been lodged into the plane's wing tip. this is the delta plane that struck the tail of another delta plane over the weekend.

the plane was taxiing for takeoff when it hit the tail of another plane that was stopped and waiting for departure at salt lake city's airport. it was just this past february when two jet blue planes clipped each other in much of the same way while on a deicing pad at logan airport. we do know the faa is implementing new rules to give those atc operators at least ten hours of rest between shifts starting next year. meanwhile, the faa and delta both say they will investigate this case. >> robin: what can you tell us about delta hiring prominent attorneys related to that mass system outage earlier this month? what can you tell us? >> gio: well, remember, robin, this was the worst for delta. it was the hardest hit airline with these crowd strike outage.

they lost millions of dollars. not just millions, hundreds of millions of dollars because thousands of flights were delayed, cancelled. now we've learned that delta has hired an attorney. they've lawyered up to seek compensation from crowd strike. so we will see how that plays out. obviously, that may affect other companies as well. >> robin: we will see what happens there, gio. >> george: now a knife attack that's left three children dead and multiple people injured in a taylor swift themed dance class in england. the 17-year-old attacker is now in custody. ian pannell is in london with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a truly appalling and unprecedented attack on a class of young children on the first day of their summer break. the youngsters ages 6 to 11 were dancing to taylor swift songs when an attacker walked into the class and launched a frenzied assault. we have thought two downchildren were killed but we have just learned three have died ages 6, 7 and 9. six others critically injured.

two adults believed to be trying to protect the children are also in intensive care. a 17-year-old boy is now under arrest, charged with murder and attempted murder. no known motive for now, and terrorism has been ruled out. it's hard to overstate the shock and grief felt by this quiet community, by the nation. taylor swift responding on instagram expressing her grief writing, they were just little kids at a dance class. i'm at a complete loss for over how to ever convey my sympathy to these families. george? >> george: okay, rebecca? >> rebecca: we turn to the latest on how inflation weary customers are dealing with fast food prices. it's sticker shock when you get that bill. elizabeth schulze is at mcdonald's. mcdonald's has reported sales went down for the first time since the pandemic. >> reporter: that's right, rebecca. good morning. this is the first time mcdonald's sales have dropped

since the end of 2020. the golden averages reported a nearly 1% decline in sales from april through june. mcdonald said its prices are more expensive there part because of higher labor costs. now customers are fighting back. part of mcdonald's strategy is extending that popular $5 meal which launched in june. includes a mcchicken or mcdouble, chicken nuggets, fries and drink. the company is confidence that keeping that meal on the menu will improve foot traffic this summer. it's hinting it might offer other value meal options or discounts going into fall. mcdonald's is facing stiff competition from other fast food chains who are also trying to entice customers with $5 meals. they know customers are fed up. overall, the price of going out to eat is up about 27% in the past four years while grocery prices are up 21%.

that gap is only widening so far this year. george? >> george: thank you very much. let's go back to lara in paris to check in on the summer games. men's gymnastics big stars. our swimmers doing well also. how's it going? >> lara: good morning from paris. the u.s. still leading the overall medal count with 20 total. an exciting contribution to that count came from the u.s. men's gymnastics team, pulling off something that hasn't been done in more than 15 years. the red, white and blue nailing their routines! this morning the u.s. men's gymnastics team basking in bronze, making it to the podium and the team finals for the first time since 2008. 20-year-old frederick richard off to a flying start, fighting to nail that landing. his parents going crazy in the stands. and cody malone back for redemption.

with any chance of a medal on the line, it came down to the pommell horse. like a real live clark kent taking off his glasses to sweep in and save the day in heart stopping fashion, securing the bronze medal for team usa. >> it was just the greatest moment of my life. i used to have pictures in my gym of the past olympic teams. i thought i hope i'm one of those people one day. now we are. it's crazy. >> lara: the medals didn't stop there. in the pool, katie grimes and emma wyatt grabbing bronze. also grabbing bronze in the 200 meter free style. and ryan murphy in the 100 meter back stroke receiving a gold medal worthy surprise from his wife bridget.

>> i looked up and saw her holding a sign that said ryan it's a girl. really brought this night to a whole other level. >> lara: and the american men taking home silver and bronze in street skateboarding. and bronze in the individual foil. his teammate making history sunday becoming the first black woman to win an individual medal in fencing taking home silver. >> growing up, fencing, no one really looked like me. i think my success in fencing has helped break stereotypes about what black people can do and who can be a fencer. >> lara: the u.s. women's basketball hot streak lives on. the u.s. beating japan 102-76. a'ja wilson and brittnen griner leading the way. and today all eyes are on simone biles and the women's gymnastic team. there is one scheduled event that we will not be seeing today.

warning, some of the images may be tough to watch. this morning new details on former deputy shawn grayson's troubling history in law enforcement. the 30-year-old worked at six police departments in four years. >> seven months on, how are you still employed by us? >> i don't know. >> reporter: that's grayson in a 2022 recording responding to his then boss deputy chief nathan miller at the logan county illinois sheriffs i was a questioning him about his miss handling of a case. he was accused of violating department policy and submitting inaccurate reports. >> a lot of officers have been charged and end up in jail because that's what they perceived. official misconduct will land you in jail. >> reporter: grayson's integrity also raised. >> others will say you have no integrity and you're lying. i'm calling you on your

good morning, eva. >> good morning, george. this morning a glimpse into the fitness icon's days just before his death. he was making plans, working on projects and celebrating his birthday. richard simmons' long time house manager and companion breaking her silence, saying the fitness icon died happy. ♪ speaking to "people" magazine about the nearly 40 years she spent working and living with him, recalling simmons telling her when she started, we are going to be together til i die. going on to say, do you know what? his dream came true. he knew, somehow. >> over the years they became very close. she told me that, in fact, she was really his companion. they ate every meal together. they traveled together. they really were, in many ways, just really, really best friends. >> reporter: simmons brother telling "people" exclusively that teresa was extremely loyal and trustworthy to his brother richard, adding, she loved my

brother and he loved her. simmons shot to fame in the '80s with a successful tv and film workout video series known for being inclusive and accessible to people of all shapes and sizes. his patented enthusiasm -- >> jenny, jenny! >> reporter: eccentric charm and those short shorts launching his 1988 sweating to the oldies video to fame. >> if you don't like having fun, you best not come in here! whoo! >> reporter: but by 2014, simmons had all but disappeared from public life. simmons chose to take a step back after having trouble with his knees, no longer able to jump or workout. telling her, i do not look that beautiful anymore. in his final days, she says he was busy, as always, calling and corresponding with fans writing

a musical about hi life. >> he traveled so much and met so many people that he just said, i want sometime for myself. and then he decided, i don't want any more time for myself, and he decided to get back and started talking to people. >> reporter: the day before he died, on his birthday, rivelis said he fell but did not want to go to the hospital. why we don't wait and do it in the morning. but in the morning it was too late. >> i can just tell you teresa is heart broken. this really, in many way, was her soul mate. >> teresa and him were very so close. simmons buying her a plot next to him so they could be buried together one day. in the days before his death, he gave her a diamond pin for their anniversary together. >> rebecca: such a bright light. thank you, eva, we appreciate it. coming up next, gio is back with the surprising scheme that could rob you of your summer vacation.

for so long. why come back now? >> i needed to step away. i needed to step away to reflect why certain choices were made. now moving forward, when i was in 49 days of solitary confinement, right? i was sitting there saying you could allow all of this to just put you under, or you can use what your mom has always said about you, that you're something special. i was not going to allow my poor choices to waste her dreams. how are you going to use your life, your experiences to help people? >> robin: now focused on helping others emerge stronger while overcoming obstacles, marion is embarking on a new coaching initiative. >> i would hope people would look at my journey, robin, and ultimately come to the conclusion that failure season forever. that although many people cannot relate to being an olympic athlete, an olympic champion, a

convicted felon, everybody can relate when it comes to failure in their life. so not only do i coach and teach and mentor entrepreneurs on how to pull themselves up when they're dealing with stuff, and how you create balance with all of it. i'm loving it. i'm so passionate about it. >> robin: with a renewed spirit, the mother of three proudly living life on her own terms, recently revealing this truth on tik tok. >> i do identify with the lgbtq community. >> robin: where did you find the courage to let people know that part of your life? >> well, i didn't realize it was a thing really, right? i'm gonna tell you, i have been away for over a decade from the spotlight and have been living my true and authentic self. and again, it was my time to just finally be done with the

mask and the disguise. i would hope that when people see my story ultimately, they say, do you know what? yeah, she went through some stuff. lot of it because of her own choosing and her own choices. but she didn't stay there. she didn't allow it all to ultimately consume her. >> robin: just what she said. failure is not forever. we sat down yesterday. the olympic games were on in the background. i said, do you watch the games? she goes, yeah, do i. some people would be surprised. it brings her joy. it doesn't bring her pain. >> george: i love how she emphasizes how no single label can define her. >> robin: i love how she owns up to it. you may not be an olympian or convicted felon. doesn't want to live in that season. she said she's in a new season of her life. she's mentoring, coaching,

a hand painted vase. a bronze sculpture for 10. a couple paintings later and i'm just getting warmed up. she was asking 80. it's signed. it's a water color. it's original. she's giving it to me for 60. one of the great things about a flea market in paris, you can find the classic parisian designers like christian dior and louis vuitton. >> james: nothing says france like this. >> lara: it pays to really look closely. because in this case i see chanel, st. laurent christian lacroix. and one final tip for flea market glory. if you see something you like, grab it fast before someone else steals your gold medal find. i'm holding two bags that are absolutely filled to the brim with i think i have 12 things. >> james: i have nada. i'm just a bit picky. it's difficult for me to choose. >> lara: and i'm a horder.

amazing. awesome. yes, the city was gorgeous. it was incredible. >> george: sounds fantastic. tell us about season 6. >> season 6. i can't believe we're back for more "press your luck." we are having so much fun on the show. i think embracing our contestants the way we do. it makes the show just really special. it's unlike any other game show, in that the contestants sort of becomes the star of each episode. we do an incredible job personalizing prizes for people. it's my favorite thing about the show, getting to know someone, hear about their story. we had a guy who had been in a car accident two weeks earlier. he was sitting at a red light, got rear ended. he shows up on the show and wins a new car. that's the kind of setup payoff we get to do all the time. i just love being there for my contestants. it's so fun. >> robin: no wonder that it's

[ laughter ] >> rebecca: you had a really scary experience yourself while filming. >> i did. personally had a scary experience. i had my first ever choking incident. i was choking on a pea. that's right. a little green pea that i was eating for lunch. i was alone in my trailer. i threw the door open. couldn't make any noise. was so afraid. >> george: oh my gosh. >> it was terrifying. happened to see someone who said, are you choking? i gave them the sign. yes. he came over very calmly.

i like backed right into him. he gave me the heimlich maneuver. his name is julius. he is my guardian angel. julius, i love you. saved my life, literally, on the set. so it's really, after that happened to me, i have used every opportunity like this one to tell people to learn the heimlich maneuver. make sure you know how to do it. there's tons of videos about how to do it. it's really easy. lot of people think i'm gonna crack a rib or hurt someone. they're dying. [ laughter ] so crack their rib if you have to. i would have been fine with a cracked rib. i literally couldn't breathe. it was super scary. so, yeah. learn the heimlich maneuver. and go see the movie. >> rebecca: welcome back to gma. we are screaming for our next guest, neve campbell. before she lit up our screens in party of 5, she was a budding ballerina. now her new documentary "swan song" brings her back to the ballet. she joins us to talk about it. so nice to see you. >> thank you. >> rebecca: we all noticed you are always pointing your toes. you are a former ballerina. now you are delving into this entire world again through this documentary. what was that like? >> it was amazing. it was a beautiful experience. chelsea mcmullen, our director, and shawn o'neil, came to me a few years ago and said karen cane, prima ballerina in canada, is finally retiring. she's going to put a new swan lake on. we want to document that, that experience, and that sort of journey for her and for the company. so i was like, she was my idol. you don't understand.

she was my idol. she's the reason i'm an artist. so i was very excited to be part of it. >> rebecca: you talk about the journey. your whole family was involved in this. your father is in the film. >> yeah. they didn't realize that my stepmother barb, has worked for the national ballet as a wardrobe person for 25 years. >> rebecca: wow. >> my dad is a super, an extra sometimes for the ballet. he was involved in this one, in the swan lake. >> robin: so many people appreciate it, you take on some important and big issues in the film. were your eyes open to some of the changes that have taken place over the years in ballet? >> yeah. i think i have always been in an awareness that there's very specific body types that are required. and also, it was very white, the companies, the ballet world. that is slowly changing. and in this movie, we look at the topic of pink tights. we've never looked at that before.

in ballet we always wear pink tights. but for a person of color, that's maybe not comfortable. and so in this movie, they make a change with that. >> robin: wow. can we see a clip? >> yeah, please. >> in 2020 we had conversations with the dancers in the company, and i had no idea that this was an issue for them. but i found out that wearing tights that weren't their skin color bothered them. it just never occurred to me. then i started thinking for swan lake, when they are in the ballet, they don't all have to have pink legs. that's always been tradition with swan lake. >> so they ended up asking the dancers not the wear tights at all so all the dancers could feel included. for some of the dancers, that was new and slightly uncomfortable, but i think necessary. >> george: how did your

experience being a dancer inform your production, since you are executive producer. >> i know the world. chelsea and shawn, when they came to me a couple years ago, they said they had influenced from a movie i had produced 20 years ago called "the company" that i danced in. i think they were aware that, you know, i had some insight. i have been dancing since i was 6. i was in the national ballet school by the time i was 9. i was in "sleeping beauty" before i became an actor. so i think i was able to have a realistic perspective on what these dancers go through and have some insight into, you know, what the edits should be. yeah, i think -- >> george: wow. >> i think i brought some insight. >> rebecca: i grew up in the scream world, all scream throughout my childhood. now you've got the seventh "scream" in the works. >> can you believe it? >> rebecca: it is hard to

believe. what can you tell us? >> nothing. [ laughter ] >> rebecca: we see it right there. your picture. >> yeah. i'm really excited. i'm really excited about it. you never expect a movie to be as successful as that. and you never expect a movie to turn into a franchise. for a film like that, you would hope perhaps that could happen. for it to become such a part of pop culture is beyond. >> george: do you have a favorite in the first six? >> the first. i think that was the magic, the first one. we had such a beautiful experience on that. a lot of fun. its success was exciting. we had a blast on all of them to be honest. >> robin: someone was telling me a story about your kids and camp. >> my son is at sleep away camp. i can't talk to him but i can see photos. they were having a halloween night last week. i saw there were two ghost faces
