4:33 am
came just hours after israel killed a top hezbollah official here in beirut. this during an airstrike. israel saying that it was in retaliation for a strike that killed 12 children on a soccer field over the weekend in the occupied golan heights. now, hezbollah has denied any involvement in what happened there. but andrew hezbollah has said previously that any strike here in beirut from israel would be met with a very strong response. so people across this region are waiting to see what hezbollah might do next. >> marcus, we're also learning about a u.s. airstrike in iraq. do we think these operations are related? >> we don't know. at this point. andrew. there's certainly a lot happening in a short period of time here. we have heard from two u.s. officials that the u.s. carried out a preemptive strike on on militants in iraq. they say that those militants were planning to launch a drone attack on u.s. personnel and
4:34 am
also coalition forces there. and so that is when they carried out this attack, as you know, in the past several months, we have seen a number a series of attacks on u.s. personnel in both iraq and syria. but at this point, it remains to be seen if how all of these events are connected. and it certainly does raise the concern that these events that we've watched unfold here overnight could have an impact on stability here across the region. andrew, all right, marcus, thank you so much. >> back in this country a busy night in the race for president. yeah. >> vice president kamala harris and former president trump's running mate j.d. vance held dueling rallies also overnight when new details about when harris could possibly choose her running mate. here's abc's leyna moise. >> vice president harris in front of a crowd of 10,000 in atlanta last night attacked former president trump for not committing to september's debate. i do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the
