early into the morning, starting around three. this is all happening at a building on seventh street and hines avenue, and that is where we find abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez. gloria, do we know a cause yet? >> reggie, we still do not know the cause of the fire. they're still investigating that. however, the fire pretty much is out, except they are still working on those hot spots. and behind me you can see firefighters are on the scene here. there are more than 30 firefighters. and you could see all that water that they've been using to put out the fire. they're continuing to spray that building with water. and you could see one firefighter earlier looked like he was almost up to his knees in water there because they have been using so much water to put it out. but we also have footage from shortly after the fire broke out early this morning. the berkeley battalion chief believes that the industrial building did not have a tenant. now this is on seventh street and hines avenue in berkeley, and thankfully nobody was inside the building or was hurt. but

the battalion chief says that the roof collapsed in. they had to fight it from above, also from a roof. next door, and they've just been working really hard to battle this blaze. >> right now we're just trying to get all the hot spots. it's not safe to go on the interior of the building. so we're using the aerial streams and we're getting a good vantage point from the roof next door, looking down and directing those lines to try and put out those hot spots. >> and there are apartments nearby, but nobody had to be evacuated. and back here live. want you to check this out, because you can see that they're continuing to spray water onto the building from above. there's a firefighter on a very tall ladder that is spraying that water. there it's just been amazing to see their hard work throughout the night to put out and contain this fire. live in berkeley gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. developing news and the israel-hamas war. a political leader of hamas,

ismail haniya, has been assassinated in iran and it's unclear who did it. no one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but hamas is blaming israel. in a statement, hamas claimed israel targeted him in a raid on his home in tehran. hania is one of the leaders israel had vowed to kill over the october 7th attack. us secretary of defense austin lloyd didn't answer questions about the killing last night, but he told reporters the u.s. is committed to avoiding a wider war in the middle east. >> we're going to do everything we can to make sure that we keep things from uh, uh- turning into a broader conflict throughout the region. >> the killing is a major blow to hamas. haniyeh was a key figure in their political operations. iranian state run media reports. a senior hamas official says the killing will not go unanswered. >> developing news nonprofits are facing are bracing for an influx of new clients as we start to see the first homeless encampment sweeps in san

francisco this video you see here shows police and city workers trying to take down one encampment yesterday. and we know at least another one was cleared as well. the city is one of many here in the bay area becoming more aggressive in tackling this issue. after a recent supreme court ruling. while it is supported by some people, homeless service providers, we spoke with believe it's the wrong approach. >> it's just shortsighted. we will not see a net change in the numbers of homelessness or the visible homelessness in our communities. through this effor, some service providers are asking city leaders to focus on the root causes of homelessness, like the housing affordability crisis. >> people in butte county are beginning to see the full extent of the devastation from the park fire. some were allowed to return to what's left of their homes yesterday. it's the fifth largest fire in the history of our state. 270 buildings have been destroyed, more than 386,000 acres have burned. there are signs that crews are beginning to make some progress to contain this. yesterday, the

fire only grew about 3000 acres, which of course is still a lot, and containment increased last night to 18%. strong winds are hindering efforts to get the fire and kern county under control. the fire is burning northeast of bakersfield. it charred over 57,000 acres and destroyed the mining town of havilah. more than 2300 people live in that small community of bodfish. they were forced to evacuate. nearby. lake isabella is also under an evacuation warning. governor newsom toured the devastation and signed an emergency proclamation to fast track resources and support this emergency. >> proc will allow more national guardsmen and women to help support your efforts, not just in the immediate, but in the aftermath, in the mopping. as we say things up and getting people back on their feet. >> newsom praised the efforts of first responders. the fire is 22% contained. a reminder you can track wildfires across the state, and you can look at our air quality with our interactive

wildfire tracker. it's easy to find. just bookmark it at abc seven news.com/fire map. >> the man accused of killing a woman by pushing her into an oncoming bart train on july 1st has finally appeared in court. the hearing had been delayed multiple times because of his health. he's accused of murder and elder abuse in the killing of 74 year old corazon dandan. investigators say he pushed dandan into a train at the powell street bart station. he's due back in court on august 16th after not entering a plea in court yesterday. >> a massive win that is how oakland mayor shang tao's describing the sale of the city's stake in the coliseum complex. she signed the terms of the agreement yesterday. it allows the city to sell its 50% ownership on the site for $105 million. the city will get $63 million between now and january. it will get the 48 million that is also due by june of 2026. the deal pumps millions into a city facing a historic deficit. >> this is a vicious cycle. we

are continuously looking at how we don't have enough resources. so this investment in the coliseum is going to be felt decades from now. >> the complex is sold to the oakland based african american sports entertainment group. it's proposing a multibillion dollar project that includes hotels, restaurants, businesses and affordable housing. because the city already passed the coliseum area specific plan in 2015, it removes possible legal hurdles and red tape that already comes with the ceqa. >> it comes with an eir. it comes with so many different elements of planning that are already cured, so it really can allow you to sort of move quicker. >> though the sale of the city's ownership is complete, the group still has to negotiate with the a's, who own the remaining 50% of the land. the group says they have had positive discussions with the team. >> 609 this morning, the accuweather forecast looking at air quality, we have fresh air overhead. look, all these green dots we have thanks to onshore flow, we are seeing moderate air quality near the park fire. even around reno, we're starting to see some of that smoke impact

administration will notify 25 million student loan borrowers today. officials say borrowers with runaway interest or have been paying their debt for more than two decades, will get priority. the education department says it's still in the process of finalizing who will be eligible for student debt relief. a 24 hour san francisco donut shop is now closed. the silver crest donut shop has been open for half a century. its neon red sign always boasted that it never closes, but it appears that day has come. the building in the bernal heights neighborhood is now boarded up. the exact reason for the shutdown is unclear. the silver crest was a favorite all night breakfast spot dating back to the 70s. the golden gate national recreation area is closer to expanding palo alto congresswoman anna eshoo and u.s. senator alex padilla introduced legislation yesterday. it would allow the national park service to expand the boundary of the rancho corral de tierra site in san mateo county. if it passes the

national park service could acquire scarpa ridge, the peninsula open space trust currently holds the area, but says it doesn't have the staff to maintain it. a bay area theater group in orinda is making its final plea to stay open. california shakespeare theater, or cal shakes, says if it doesn't raise $350,000 by tomorrow, it might be forced to close. the group has a gofundme to save its production this year, called as you like it, but it's only raised about an eighth of its total goal. the executive director says post-pandemic ticket sales are not making up for the lack of fundraising. >> the hidden gem, or even a best kept secret, which for a time was delightful. while it was sustainable. but it is not a solid business plan to build a future round. >> celebrity and oakland native zendaya used to take summer programs at the theater. she has made a donation. cal shakes hopes to transition the venue into a multidisciplinary performing arts center. >> you are looking at live

ramp to golf course, and we'll check back in just a few. >> thank you. sue. breaking news. the fire is out at a berkeley building, and those who work and live nearby are waking up to see this damage. it all started around three this morning on seventh street in hines avenue, and at one point the flames were coming through the roof. abc seven news reporter gloria wiget is joining us live with what we've learned. hi, gloria. >> good morning. kumasi still a very smoky out here, and firefighters are still working to put out those hot spots. you can see behind me that they are continuing to pour water onto this building. and there's a sign in front of the building that says for lease. so it appears that they did not have a tenant there at this time. and the battalion chief tells me the building was empty when that fire broke out. and we have some video from shortly after it broke out early this morning. the berkeley fire battalion chief believes that the industrial building did not have a tenant. this is on seventh street and hines avenue in

berkeley, and thankfully nobody was hurt. but the battalion chief says the roof collapsed in and they had to fight it from above and also from a roof next door. >> well, power line did drop and that was one of the hazards in the beginning. our crews had to navigate their way around that power line. we quickly taped it off that power line also started the van that it fell on to on fire, so we had that as an additional distraction. so they had to extinguish that. there was a transformer that blew while they were here. so their safety becomes paramount and they got to work their way around all that stuff, and we tape it off. p-g-and-e's was able to respond real quickly and they were shut off the power in the entire block so we could work around all the wires. >> and there are apartments nearby, but nobody had to be evacuated. and right now, looking here live, you can see that hose continues to spray water on the roof of this

building. and we are seeing more water being sprayed from the side over here as well. so firefighters continuing to work very hard to make sure that they contain the fire. live in berkeley. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you gloria. today we're expected to learn more about the investigation into a deadly police shooting in san francisco. the department will hold a virtual town hall to provide updates. the shooting happened last sunday on willow street. that's an alleyway off van ness in the tenderloin. surveillance video shows the man and officer shot. police say they responded to calls of an armed robbery on nearby mcallister street before the shooting. the police officers association says the suspect fired at officers and then they fired back. >> new fallout in a scandal involving a nonprofit with deep ties to the san francisco police department, the former executive director of sf safe was arrested yesterday. we're not naming her because she hasn't been arraigned yet, but she is facing 34 felony counts, including

misappropriation of public money, wage theft and fraud. investigators say the nonprofit misused $700,000 on luxury gifts, trips and lavish parties. the owners of diosa blooms say that she would often order flowers, and they are still owed $17,000 for two large events. >> she never really had a budget. she just said, i want this flowers. i want this many. and yeah, and we did find it a little weird because she was, head of a nonprofit. so we were like, where is this budget coming from? >> several employees of sf safe also claim they haven't been paid. sf safe once organized neighborhood watch groups and provided communities with safety training, but it ceased operations in january. >> oakland mayor xiang tao is now weighing in on the 16 businesses that got broken into and ransacked over the weekend. this happened on collins drive near hegenberger road. this is the area that has seen multiple

businesses close over the past year. because of crime, including denny's and in-n-out. >> the hegenberger corridor is an entryway to the city of oakland, and it is one of my priority corridors. and so this is, you know, this hearing about this burglary right after we were just there. it's heartbreaking. and we're going to do more. >> the mayor says they're working with chp on the case. oakland police say at least three people were involved. no one has been arrested. >> police in petaluma are investigating a series of anti-semitic incidents that happened sunday. it involves a group of people hanging a banner on a one on one overpass, and placing fliers on cars. it's not clear if the incidents are criminal, but they're certainly alarming to communities increasingly targeted by hate crimes. just yesterday, governor gavin newsom announced a new round of grant funding to boost security at synagogues and mosques, as well as at black and lgbtq community centers. state senator josh becker of menlo park helped to push for the

expansion. >> we don't want people to feel like they can't go where they shouldn't go to their religious institution or to their their nonprofit community center, because there's a risk of an attack and they're safer to stay at home. we want them to feel safe and, feel comfortable. >> becker says more than 900 groups have already received millions in grant money for security improvements like reinforced doors, screening systems and more. >> the city of berkeley failed to inspect nearly half of its restaurants and food facilities last year. that's according to a new report from the city auditor. unlike many cities, berkeley does its own inspections, something often done by counties. the city's new health, housing and city services director went on the defensive during the berkeley city council meeting monday night. >> clearly, the spotlight is on us to fix this and to exceed the public's expectations. you know, if we're not able to pull that off by the end of the year, then i think, you know, my new job

who announced he would retire from boeing earlier this year. berg is a former ceo at aerospace supplier rockwell collins. he begins his new role august 8th. the announcement comes the same day boeing announced it lost more than $1.4 billion in the second quarter. the company continues to face scrutiny over the safety and quality of its planes. >> reslience. new developments in the listeria outbreak caused by deli meat boarshead has recalled an additional 7 million pounds of meats, shelves and some stores nationwide had already been emptied out after an earlier recall of 200,000 pounds. last week, the usda announced a liverwurst sample from a maryland store tested positive for listeria. now, the agency is recalling all meats produced at a boarshead facility in virginia. the listeria outbreak is being blamed for two deaths and sickening people in

13 states. infections are especially dangerous for people over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems. also people who are pregnant. >> pregnant women their immune systems are relatively weakened and they have a risk of transmitting the infection to their unborn baby. >> listeria typically causes fever, muscle aches, tiredness, and may cause stiff neck confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. symptoms can occur quickly or up to ten weeks after eating contaminated food. >> book lovers and writers in the east bay are mourning the loss of a neighborhood staple. east bay booksellers was destroyed in a fire yesterday morning in oakland's rockridge neighborhood. the business on college avenue has been selling books for more than 30 years, and often hosted talks with local authors. the shop is a complete loss, and the fire even damaged a neighboring business. investigators are working to figure out how the fire started. the bookstore owner says he's

devastated. >> it's still in a state of shock. very much sort of just overwhelmed by the scene, just looking at it. i've i'm slowly feeling like i'm stepping into the actual moment. whereas for the past couple of hours, it's felt like watching a movie. >> people can now support the store by placing online orders or buying gift cards. there's also a gofundme. the bay area independent bookstore community is also pledging its help. san francisco's city lights and green apple books are posting messages of support on social media. >> in the south bay, the vendors behind a popular flea market are pushing for san jose to figure out next steps. we've been following this for years now. the berryessa flea market days are numbered, with the massive housing development planned for that land by the north. san jose, san jose bart station back in february, the developer and the city made progress on the plan to redevelop this site into housing and office space. construction is years away, with
