america this morning. >> good friday morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you all i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with the emotional scene overnight. the american prisoners freed by russia and welcomed home with open arms, tears and hugs greeted them. >> and getting off the plane. wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich had two words to say i'm home. reporter. overnight, the americans freed in a historic prisoner swap, reunited with their families. wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich giving his mom a big hug on the tarmac in maryland. gershkovich, a former marine, paul whelan and russian american journalist al sukhorukova were among those freed in the largest prisoner swap since the cold war. greeted overnight by president biden and vice president harris. >> my job is to make sure, number one, they don't get them, and if they do, we get them back. >> after landing in the u.s, the former prisoners and their families were offered a flight to an army medical center in support. >> getting off the planes,

seeing the president, the vice president who was a good homecoming. so looking forward to seeing my family. >> whelan, the longest held american detainee in russia, was arrested in 2018 when he traveled to the country for a friend's wedding. gershkovich. his release comes just days after he was sentenced to 16 years in a russian penal colony. both men convicted on what the u.s. said were sham espionage charges. president biden posted a video from the oval office yesterday showing the moment their families got to speak to them. >> i miss you so much. >> the multinational deal set two dozen people free. russia received eight of its nationals in the swap, including a convicted assassin, a hacker and suspected spies, most of whom were held by u.s. allies overseas. >> germany, poland, slovenia, norway and turkey. they all stepped up and they stood with us. so for anyone who questions whether allies matter, they do. they matter. >> critics question whether such a swap encourages vladimir putin

harris campaign is writing a fundraising wave while facing more criticism over the crisis on the border. >> this morning, the harris campaign is expected to announce a monthly fundraising record, bringing in what's expected to be more than $300 million in july, compared to about 140 million announced by the trump campaign. it comes as harris finalizes her search for a vice president. sources say. minnesota governor tim walz recently met with harris's vetting team, as did illinois governor jb pritzker, who just released a campaign style video on his youtube channel describing his accomplishments. >> there's no better place to see the change possible under democratic leadership than here in illinois. >> also, on the short list, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, arizona senator mark kelly, and kentucky governor andy beshear speaking in oklahoma last night attacking trump. >> he called her a bum. well, if donald trump wants to see a bum, he ought to look in the mirror.

and what he'll see staring back are multiple bankruptcies and 34 felony convictions at the southern border. >> republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance blamed harris and biden for the surge of migrants coming into the u.s. they stopped deportations on day one. >> they stopped construction of the border wall. on day one. we see the border wall sitting here, ready to be completed behind us, and that can't happen because of kamala harris administration. vance also defended trump's comments this week, questioning harris's race. >> trump told an audience of black journalists that harris all of a sudden decided to become a black person. >> all he said is that kamala harris is a chameleon. she goes to georgia two days ago. she was raised in canada. she puts on a fake southern accent. she is everything to everybody, and she pretends to be somebody different depending on which audience she's in front of. >> senate majority leader chuck schumer was asked about the attacks coming from the republican ticket. >> well, i think my republican colleagues are embarrassed. i

had one senior republican colleague say to me this mornin, i guess now you're going to win the election. after we heard trump last night, harris is expected to choose her running mate by tuesday. >> both governor shapiro and transportation secretary pete buttigieg have canceled some upcoming events, fueling even more vp speculation. andrew. all right. >> ed wynn, for us in washingto, m thank you. some jitters on wall street this morning with renewed fears of a recession. the dow tumbled nearly 500 points yesterday thanks to weak economic data, including a rise in unemployment claims. and late yesterday, amazon reported a weaker than expected sales outlook. and the big news comes today with the government's monthly jobs report expected to show the labor market cooling. >> hamas has declared today a global day of rage to protest the assassination of its political leader allegedly killed by israel. the call for action comes on the day of ismail haniyeh s burial. he and a bodyguard were killed wednesday in tehran by a bomb that was smuggled into his guest

house two months ago, and then detonated remotely. >> they should have known that's what victims and their families are arguing as they try to hold the parents of the accused mass shooter at a texas high school responsible for the deaths of ten people. abc's andrea fujii reports on their first day in court, an emotional testimony on the first day of a civil trial stemming from a deadly school shooting outside houston. >> victims families arguing the accused shooter's parents should have done more to prevent the tragedy there. >> the parents and the bottom line is that's your responsibility. to know what's going on with your child. >> police say 17 year old dimitrios pagourtzis opened fire at santa fe high school in 2018, killing eight students and two teachers, wounding more than a dozen others. he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. now, survivors and victims families are suing his parents, claiming they should have known their son was mentally ill and prevented him from gaining access to his father's weapons. they say pagourtzis had nearly $2,000 in

ammo and other disturbing items delivered months before the shooting. >> parents of a depressed child should safely store their guns if they don't, then their child commits a school shooting with them. the parents share in the responsibility. >> you can't give me an excuse and tell me, oh, it's because of this and because of this that my son's dead. you can't do that. somebody has to take accountability for my son's murder. >> but the parents say there were no warning signs about their son's mental health problems and claim others were to blame, including the company that sold ammo to their underage son. the trial comes just months after the parents of a michigan teen became the first parents ever convicted for a mass school shooting. jennifer and james crumbley were sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison for missing opportunities that could have prevented their son from killing four students at his high schoo. back in texas, the ammo company was also a defendant in this

like i really didn't think that i would even get on the podium. so it's just like crazy that i was here and i did everything that i could. >> katie ledecky won her third medal of the games, team usa taking silver and the women's four by 200 freestyle relay. meanwhile, one track star managed to strike gold before even taking the field. team usa discus thrower veronica freely took to social media to reveal that she couldn't afford her rent this month, despite being a world class athlete, rapper turned reality tv star flavor flav answered the call, offering to pay her rent in the boxing world, a controversy after algerian boxer iman khalif won her bout in just 46 seconds. her italian competitor throwing down her helmet, saying the match was unjust, with critics questioning khalifa's gender and eligibility. she is believed to have a variation in her chromosomes. the international boxing association disqualified her from a competition last year, saying she failed a gender
