monster jam makes its return this weekend. we are live at the oakland arena with a look at the newest truck hitting the dirt called the sparkle smash. i'm excited about this. this should be cool. yeah we're a monster jam fam for sure. yes! well, good morning to you. it is friday, august 2nd. we'll start with a look at our weather. >> yeah, a nice afternoon on the way this morning though. we are tracking some pockets of dense fog. let's show you live doppler seven. we've flipped it over into visibility mode, showing you how low the visibility is in parts of the north bay. the one spot really focusing on petaluma this morning we are down to a quarter of a mile visibility. so certainly if you're traveling 101 in the region, your slow go as this fog is settling near the surface right now down to four miles and half moon bay. so our marine layers overhead with some drizzle along the coast. we've had this pattern pretty much all week. temperatures right now, mid 50s to the low 60s around the bay shoreline. good morning castro valley. we're in the upper 50s. then as you head inland we have temperatures mainly in the 60s right now. today we will find a mix of sun

and clouds throughout the entire day. however, it still gets pretty hot inland. we're having temperatures back into the mid 90s for daytime highs. we have fog this morning around the bay shoreline and again we'll see clouds moving in from the south once we burn that fog off for a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures in the upper 70s for daytime highs and along the coast. just like yesterday, we have that fog this morning, some low visibility, some drizzle as well. pretty cloudy all day long and temperatures in the low 60s. let's check in with sue. see those drive times this morning. >> pretty quiet right now drew. and we hope it stays that way. we had a fog advisory on the golden gate bridge with the overnight roadwork in the northbound direction. you can see the zipper truck out there getting ready to reconfigure the lanes. you will need windshield wipers coming through the waldo grade or the robin williams tunnel and down onto the span. and then things do lift in san francisco, but still drizzly as we head to the san mateo bridge. no drizzle here and some cars. yeah, we've got the morning commute well underway here for

the 17 minute drive from haywar, across the flat section, up the high rise and over towards foster city, and you can see your early morning central valley commute is underway as well, with a 40 minute drive time up and over the altamont pass into dublin pleasanton. ladies. >> all right, sue, thank you so much. san francisco mayor london breed has issued an executive order to buy bus tickets for the homeless population, as the city shelters are nearly full and the mayor says they are seeing progress in housing, many longtime san franciscans. >> but this directive addresses the growing portion of people coming in from out of town. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has details on this new mandate. >> the push to get people off the streets of san francisco is intensifying. mayor london breed issuing a directive thursday to all city departments working with homeless people, ordering them to offer relocation assistance before providing any other services, including housing and shelter. the goal is to reunite people with family and supports in other

communities. >> i supported as long as we verify that those people will actually have a place. >> dell seymour is the founder of code tenderloin, a nonprofit working with people on the streets for decades. and he says the city's relocation efforts often fall short. >> you know, a lot of people get on the phone very emotional and says, yeah, send them back. i'll take care of it. but by the time they get there, we're not sure if they really have a place. >> as for the reasoning behind the directive, the mayor's office points to the most recent point in time count. the last tally showing 40% of unhoused individuals came to san francisco from another county, or from out of state. >> there's a lot of people who come out here thinking that san francisco is going to be this wonderful state for them to live and thrive, and actually, they're leaving home because they think they're going to find something else here. >> donna hilliard says offering people a way home is key. >> they need to be able to go back home. i think offering them that chance to reunite with their family, with their support system is everything. >> while others warn the journey home program only goes so far in

news app. >> emotional reunions as three americans, including wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich and former marine paul whelan, are back on american soil, the trio arrived last night at joint base andrews just outside of washington, and they were greeted by their families and loved ones along the tarmac with president biden also vice president harris whelan was the first one off the plane. he's a former marine. he had been held by russia since 2018. gershkovich was the next to get off the plane he had been held since early 2023 and was recently sentenced to 16 years in prison on espionage charges. he was based out of the wall street journal's moscow bureau, and kept a counter up on its website that tracked the days, hours and seconds that he was held in russia. and also kumasi was the last one off the plane. she's also a journalist and is originally from russia and holds dual citizenship. she was sentenced to six years in prison

for spreading false information about the russian army. the president held an impromptu press conference. >> anyone who has lost family or worried about whether family would come home, whatever the circumstance was, has to understand extreme. have you heard me say it before? my dad used to say, family is the beginning in the end, and it really is. it's not who we are, but who we are as a country. >> the former prisoners and their families will now have the opportunity to head to texas to receive support at an army medical center. there, a total of 24 prisoners were involved in this complex multi-country swap. >> it is the largest exchange since the cold war. 15 of them were held in russia and one in belarus, which is an ally. russia is getting eight people in return. reports say a total of nine countries were involved in the high level negotiations that went on for several months, and germany was a critical player. its willingness to

release a convicted assassin was the key to the deal. david whelan, the brother of former marine paul whelan, spoke exclusively with abc news about the swap. >> i think it would be hard not to be satisfied once your loved one is free. i think all of us who have been through this experience would give almost anything for our loved one to be released from being held hostage or a wrongful detention. i think the difficulty it poses probably is for the next family, the next american who is detained by russia. >> but not everyone is coming home. at least three american citizens, including school teacher mark fogel, are still being held by russia. >> this is a story we've been covering for a while. the redevelopment of the hunters point naval shipyard. it covers roughly 500 acres, but there's toxic waste. and last year, radioactive material was found on the site. nearby residents ended up suing over the cleanup efforts. the chronicle says that the navy agreed to expand the toxic cleanup, which is going to further delay that project. it could take an additional 18

months as the navy retests some of the sites. the shipyard was heavily used by the navy during the cold war. >> marin county is reporting a spike in covid 19 cases. the number of people with the virus in local hospitals doubled in the last month, and that same time frame, public health officials also say they saw the highest number of deaths related to covid in more than a year. senior living facilities like the redwoods in mill valley say they're taking extra precautions. the facility's chief operating officer says they've seen a few cases but have kept things under control. >> some of the measures that we've kept in place are screening all of the visitors that come to this community to see if they've had any symptoms of covid 19 or have tested positive recently for the virus. we're also practicing universal masking in our skilled nursing facility at public health officials in marin county recommend people get vaccinated, especially those over 65. >> let's look at the accuweather forecast today. highs around the region will be a degree or two

running mate. abc news reporter em nguyen has more on the staggering amount of money her campaign has already raised. this morning, the harris campaign is expected to announce a monthly fundraising record, bringing in what's expected to be more than $300 million in july, compared to about 140 million announced by the trump campaign. it comes as harris finalizes her search for a vice president. sources say minnesota governor tim walz recently met with harris's vetting team, as did illinois governor jb pritzker, who just released a campaign style video on his youtube channel. >> there's no better place to see the change possible under democratic leadership than here in illinois. >> also on the short list, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, arizona senator mark kelly and kentucky governor andy beshear. speaking in oklahoma last night attacking trump, he called her a bum. >> well, if donald trump wants to see a bum, he ought to look in the mirror. and what he'll

super exciting. i got my buddy armando. armando here. mondo castro, driver of el toro loco. good morning. thank you for being here so early for us. we really appreciate it. how are you doing? >> i'm doing great, man. i'm super excited to be here. it's actually my first time i ever get to compete inside the oakland arena. i'm super excited. we got three awesome events and as you can see behind me, you got some trucks are ready to go and it's not quite in the arena yet, but we're ready to rock it here inside the oakland arena. yeah. >> when did you get involved with this? how did you get how did you first learn about it? the excitement behind it. and when did you i guess, eventually become a driver? >> yeah. so long story short, i kind of grew up in a as a fan. you know, i went to my very first monster jam show when i was six years old and kind of always wanted that dream to become a monster driver. and in 2018, i was actually 2017 was actually my rookie year. i got to kind of live out my dream, been doing it eight years, get to travel the world and, you know, make, make, make all those memories with the kids. and man, i like to put monster jam in three words. it's unscripted, unexpected, and truly unforgettable from start to finish. i mean, these these trucks weigh 12,000 pounds, have 1500 horsepower. you can only

miss. so you can check out my beautiful six ton unicorn up close and personal. >> what can you tell me about the overall design? the theme? why go with this theme and what does it mean? i guess to show it to so many people you know, so sparkle smash has been a toy for so long now and you always see the little girls. >> you see all the little kids with sparkle smash trucks shirts. and so we said, you know, we have to bring this monster jam truck to life. and this past year we were able to do that, and i was asked to be the driver behind the wheel of this 12 ton unicorn, six ton unicorn. and it's so amazing. i've been having such a great time competing. we've won several competitions, so far, so i look to keep that momentum going here in oakland. >> yeah, you mentioned obviously little girls like seeing it being a female driver. does it mean anything special to you to be able to drive this thing? >> absolutely. you know what? i'm an aggressive driver. you know, when i first started, i just been aggressive from the beginning. so it's kind of been my driving style. and kind of cemented that into monster jam. so when it comes to being a woman in monster jam and in a male dominated sport, none of us are here to just be a pretty
