>> rebecca: incredibly powerful. the americans are now in san antonio this morning at brooke army medical center as they take the first steps to returning to their lives. we're gonna get to that in just a minute, but we begin with chief white house correspondent mary bruce with all the details on how this all came together. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. well, overnight those emotional and enthusiastic reunions on the tarmac, moments of pure joy and elation made possible by painstaking negotiation and the power of diplomacy. the president saying it represents the essence of who we are as a country. early this morning the three americans wrongfully detained in russia arriving safely in texas to begin the next phase of their journey. >> i'm glad i'm home, yeah. i'm never going back there again. >> reporter: the three now set to under go medical evaluations after being in russian custody, some for months, others for years. just hours before, an emotional moment as the three americans touched down back home on u.s. soil.

first off, former marine paul whelan. after 5 1/2 years in captivity, a salute. wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich smiling, appearing a bit in awe, with a giant hug for his mom. and russian american alsu kurmasheva embracing her family, holding them close. the three now back where they belong, released as part of the largest, most complicated prisoner exchange since the cold war. >> evan, how are you feeling? >> i'm all right. it was a good flight. >> what about the show of support? >> it's -- overwhelming. >> reporter: president biden and vice president harris on hand for the dramatic reunion at joint base andrews outside washington. >> long time coming. >> reporter: their journey to freedom beginning with this bus ride to the tarmac in russia. gershkovich seen appearing to crack a smile after nearly 17

months in russian captivity. then the tense handoff on this tarmac in turkey. the sweeping deal involving 24 prisoners and at least six different country. shortly after the swap was complete back in washington, the president breaking the good news to their families gathered in the oval office. then picking up the phone. >> can you hear me? this is joe biden. >> reporter: the families speaking for the first time with their loved ones, knowing they were finally coming home. >> i miss you so much! >> reporter: the americans then boarding a plane back to the u.s., celebrating with the team sent to pick them up. >> their brutal ordeal is over and they're free. >> reporter: biden noting kurmasheva's daughter will be able to celebrate her 13th birthday today with her mother by her side. >> now she gets to celebrate with her mom. that's what this is all about, families, able to be together again like they should have been all along. >> reporter: the president saying the deal shows the power of diplomacy. >> the deal that made this

possible was a feat of diplomacy and friendship. friendship. multiple countries helped get this done. they joined a difficult complex negotiation at my request. i personally thank them all again. so for anyone who questions whether allies matter, they do! they matter. >> reporter: biden directly involved in the negotiations, personally enlisting the help of foreign leaders. even an hour before he announced he would not seek re-election, biden on the phone trying to get this deal over the finish line. but until that moment when they were in u.s. custody, officials on pins and needles. biden's national security adviser jake sullivan, who was deeply involved in negotiations, emotional and relieved. >> today -- excuse me. today was a very good day. >> reporter: and a day long in the making. whelan's twin brother david telling abc news the family worked tirelessly for this moment, with paul left out of

two prior deals. >> i didn't really allow myself it was going to happen until i saw that announcement by the white house. of course, we're overjoyed. >> reporter: while in prison, gershkovich honing his former russian language skills, even working on a book. after months of waiting and advocating on his behalf, the wall street journal news room erupting in cheers at the news of his release. and sharing this remarkable detail. before his release an audacious request. the reporter asking putin for an interview. >> he has a sense of humor and sophisticated sense of humor that serves up his captor with basically a message that you never really imprisoned me. >> reporter: but putin would not agree to return the americans without the release of a few key russian criminals in exchange.

the russian president seen welcoming eight of them back home including the man putin insisted had to be part of this deal, a convicted murderer and russian hit man. now a part of this deal in total, 16 people held by russia are now free this morning. the u.s. had hoped this deal would also include alexi navalni but he died in february behind bars. the kremlin was blamed for that. officials here say they were determined. they still saw a path forward, just a more rocky one. the president adamant he wanted to get this done with the time he has left in office. lara? >> lara: thank you. such good news. the freed americans arrived in san antonio early this morning where they will be evaluated, debriefed and prepared to re-enter society. mirea villarreal is in san antonio with the story. >> reporter: all three americans made their way to joint base san antonio landing around 3:30 this morning.

this is going to start their new chapter as free americans here in the united states. they are now right behind me at brooke army medical center where they will receive full access to something called post isolation support activities. this is also known as the reintegration program for military personnel and civilians who have been held captive overseas. the program requires physical checkups, but it's primarily designed to help them decompress and meet with mental health experts. wnba star britney griner was here after her imprisonment in russia. she released a statement saying in part we are overwhelmed with joy for the u.s. citizens who were returned safely to the united states today. we don't know exactly how long they will be here. each one of them will vary, the timing here. but we do know as soon as they are given the all clear as civilians, they can then be with their families and return home when they are ready. whit? >> whit: all right, mireya, thank you. joining us now is white house

national security adviser jake sullivan. jake, good morning to you. it's great to have you. we saw a different side of you yesterday, getting emotional talking about those difficult discussions behind the scenes. and then overnight, you witnessed that special moment. i wonder what was it like watching those americans step off the plane on u.s. soil? >> it's really hard to describe. it was such a human victory. three innocent people reunited with their families, their loved ones. getting to see that was just incredible. but i think it was also a victory for our country. this was the united states of america at its best, working with our allies to bring our people home safe. all to help free freedom fighters. russians who have fought for democracy and were thrown in prison. to be able to be part of that was one of the greatest honors of my life. >> whit: the americans, how would you describe their

conditions? how are they doing this morning? >> they were very upbeat last night. i will leave to it the doctors, who will want to give them a full workup in san antonio where they are taken. where all of the unjustly detained americans are taken. they certainly look to be in good spirits and positive. of course, any time you get to get off a plane and see your loved ones there after such a long time, that's gonna give you a real boost. >> whit: two dozen prisoners, half dozen countries. when did you know it was really going to happen? what was president biden's role? >> to be honest, i knew when i got the call that said the exchange was done. before that i thought something could go wrong. but the deal had been in the works for weeks, and in the closing days it became more and more likely that it was going to happen. but i didn't know for sure until it actually happened. president biden's role, simple. he did it. he did this deal.

it would not have happened without him because it was his relationships with key allies that unlocked the elements we needed to put this deal together. it was his direction to me and our team that said figure out a way to execute this so that we get these people home. that's exactly what happened. >> whit: and, of course, as you know, the key was the convicted assassin that's being held in germany. how do you respond to criticism that these types of deals on encourage putin to imprison more americans and use them as bargaining chips in the future? >> we looked at the evidence over the last 3 1/2 year. if you go back to the beginning of the biden administration there were a lot more unjusty detained americans overseas than there are today. we've done deals with get 70 americans out. we haven't seen another 70 americans taken. could that change in the future? that's possible. these are the risks you to weigh when you made hard decisions like the president did to get americans home. but we think

in the cost benefit analysis, it made sense to do this deal because america gained and innocent americans are home free and safe. >> whit: speaking of those tough decisions, what about other americans still in russia, like mark fogal. his family calling it wrong and unacceptedable that he wasn't included in this deal. what are you doing for him and others? >> look, we fight for every american, to get them to be part of deals, to get them out. we can't always get every person out at the same time. we've seen that before in russia. paul whelan, we were able to get out in previous deals. we got him out here. what i can say, and i said this at the podium yesterday. i am personally working on that case and i'm going to do everything in my power to see mark get home. >> whit: former president trump and some allies have questioned what the u.s. may have given up in return for these american prisoners. can you just clarify for us whether anything was offered to russians in this exchange? >> i will happily clarify that

nothing was offered to the russians in this exchange. that's it. that's the only thing that was offered. to the criticism of president trump, paul whelan was taken by the russians when president trump was president. joe biden got him freed. >> whit: jake sullivan for us, thank you so much for your time. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> whit: rebecca? >> rebecca: thank you, whit. we turn now to the race for the white house. vice president kamala harris could officially lock up the democratic nomination as early as today, as she comes closer to locking in her running mate. rachel scott is following the latest developments. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, rebecca, good morning to you. that's exactly right. vice president harris could be hours away from officially locking in the democratic nomination for president. in fact, just moments ago we learned her president is already planning a virtual celebration for later this afternoon. overnight the harris campaign announcing this morning they have raised $310 million in july. all eyes turn to who harris will

pick to be her running mate. we're expecting that decision by tuesday. sources tell abc news that her vetting team has met with three leading contenders arizona senator mark kelly, minnesota's governor and pennsylvania governor shapiro. former president trump continues to double down on his controversial attacks, questioning vice president's racial identity. while some republicans have said those attacks went too far, his running mate, j.d. vance, rushed to his defense saying those comments do not give him any pause at all. harris, for her part, not directly weighing in on attacks from the former president, but she goes on to say the republican ticket continues to divide this country, whit. >> whit: rachel scott, thank you very much. now dramatic new details on the assassination of a top hamas official in tehran. sources tell abc news that the explosive device used was smuggled into his room two months ago. matt rivers is in tel aviv with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. stunning new details in the assassination of the hamas political leader in tehran. his funeral this morning in qatar.

he was killed by an explosive device planted in his room as part of an israeli plot. three middle eastern sources confirming this. one of those sources saying the bomb was smuggled inside the guest house roughly two months ago and was detonated just before 2 a.m. local time wednesday. once it was confirmed that he was in the room. president biden speaking with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu overnight saying once again the u.s. will help defend israel against any retaliation. lara? >> lara: matt, thank you. now the jobs report, after stocks had one of their worst days of the year. elizabeth schulze has details. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: hey, good morning, lara. this job report shows employers are hiring at a slower pace than expected. 114,000 jobs were added in july, way below expectations.

another concern the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3%. it has been going up. this is making some investors nervous. dow jones industrial average on thursday tumbled almost 500 points. that's down 1.2%. and the s&p 500, which is what tracks most americans retirement accounts, also dropped. but when you take a step back and look at the s&p's performance just so far this year, it is still up 14% for the typical 401k balance that has stayed invested in stocks, that translates to a gain of about $18,000 since january. guys? >> whit: that silver lining in there. elizabeth, thank you. coming up the sheriff speaking out over the outrage of sonya massey's death. what he said about the deputy charged with her murder. >> lara: plus the american women making history in paris. simone biles and katie ledecky. >> rebecca: and show me the money hits the beach. but first let's go to ginger.

decision to hire the officer who shot massey. >> reporter: hey, good morning, whit. yeah, this is the first time we are hearing in detail from the sheriff who is defending his decision to hire shawn grayson, the deputy -- to hire the deputy who -- shawn grayson, sorry, his name escaped me. he defends that hiring and calls grayson a rogue officer. this morning jack campbell defending his hiring of shawn grayson, the deputy charged in the police shooting of sonya massey. >> there was nothing in his background that would disqualify him from being a police officer in illinois. in fact, he had been hired by five other agencies and certified by the state of illinois six different times to be a police officer. >> reporter: insisting that his employment history was not a red flag. in fact, he says, it was a plus that grayson worked at so many agency in such a short period of time. campbell releasing grayson's personnel records showing two of those past employers said he did not demonstrate good officer safety skills and needed more training.

>> there was nothing reported to us that would concern us, no use of force complaints and things like that that would be something we would be very concerned about. >> reporter: the records also show grayson never informed him of past misconduct, including a time he disobeyed a command during a high speed chase. when asked about grayson's two dui's, campbell dismissing the arrests. >> he did nothing in his employment with these agencies that would have raised another flag for people to look at. >> reporter: grayson, now charged with first degree murder for the july 6th shooting, is being held without bond. massey had called police to report a prowler. >> drop the pot! >> reporter: chillingly massey's mother donna worried an officer might overreact, called 911 the day before the shooting to alert them that she was having a mental health episode. >> she thinks everybody's after her, like paranoid schizophrenic. >> reporter: many now questioning whether her concerns were pass along the grayson and her partner. >> i don't know what they knew. we were not able to conduct an informal question because

families embrace there with the prisoners. tell us what it was like for you and brittney to watch this land mark exchange go through. >> i mean, it was pretty surreal for us. we were getting ready for her to play in the belgium game at the olympics. we heard the news and everything stopped for us. there was no basketball in that moment. we just kind of went back to 2022 for us. and it was just reliving that moment. we were overwhelmed with joy and just relief. for me, bg is still an every day memory for her, what it was like to come back home. we were so happy for the families to be reunited. >> rebecca: brittney is in the olympics right now. what kind of contact have the two of you had with these families over the years? and what would you tell these released americans and their families, having been through

all of this? >> for me personally, the only contact i have ever had was with paul whelan's family. they were arms wide open the minute bg was detained. his sister sent me plenty of e-mails just helping me through process of what to expect. i was so gracious for it because i had no idea what to expect. as you heard, paul whelan was over there for five plus years. she was well versed at the time. and so it was, you know, when i was lost, she had some type of insight. for the families, i mean, this is one of the hardest parts now. so we think when they're gone that's the hardest part. but when they come back, there's so much work to be done. tune the world out and just love on them until they're whole again. they have went through something that's unimaginable. >> rebecca: yeah. as you point that out, it's the

greatest hope to have your loved one back, but there are these trials that you go through when they're back in your arms. talk a little bit about that and what you and brittney went through as she came back to life. >> you know, i think you expect them to be back and you have them back again. but, you know, this was a learning experience when you realize their life will never be the same. just like the families. our lives are never going to be the same again. just having that grace to be able to, you know, be in the room with somebody that you once knew and understanding that, you know, we're all different people now, and giving them the space to, like, reintroduce themselves, you know? families are different after all of those years and also the wrongfully detained americans as well. everyone needs time to reintroduce themselves as real whole people. it is a learning moment. do not expect them to be the exact same person you last saw. they're not. but, you know, you do the loving with one another throughout this

process that they're back, you're gonna realize, hey, i grew through the tragedy and we are even better humans for it. it's a beautiful thing when you just take the time to focus on the mental aspect. >> rebecca: absolutely. we saw that love on display on the tarmac there. talk about brittney and her return. she was subjected to a debrief. they will, too. what kinds of things will they be experiencing over the next few hours? >> you're going to be experiencing a lot of individuals talking to you about how to best, you know, help your person in that moment. and so, like i just said before, you know, sometimes we think we can just go right back to integrating with our loved ones as if nothing happened, but something did happen. so they're giving you the tools

and skill set from the family perspective on, you know, how to approach them. you know, how to make sure you're not triggering memories for them and things like that. and so it's extremely helpful and you really, truly don't know if you're gonna need these skill sets or not. however, you'd rather have them than not have them. from a family's perspective, had a lot of people sat me down to let me know, these are breathing exercise. here's different things you can do if you see this happening. it was extremely educational, honestly, in that moment from me. everyone at the san antonio base was helping me out with what to expect from someone who's experienced a great amount of trauma. >> rebecca: since you and brittney were last here with robin, you had your own news. big changes in your life. you just welcomed your first baby. your son was born less than a
