and abc news, good night. is blasting out something other than beer, and it's stinking up the neighborhood tonight. good evening. i'm ama daetz complaints are brewing over a foul odor coming from the anchor brewery in san francisco. the smell is being compared to manure, among other things, those who live near the brewery, which is located on mariposa street in the potrero hill neighborhood, say they first noticed the stench this week.

abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to neighbors who had some rather colorful descriptions. >> pickle balls aren't the only thing wafting through the air in potrero hill, a particular smell is capturing people's attention every week while i'm trying to play. >> it just smells like we've just been referring to it as like the bad breath smell. >> they're talking about a foul odor coming from the anchor brewing company. sapporo sold the beloved brewery in may. it's now gearing up to reopen. >> it just comes in and whiffs and waves, and it's just a very strong, pungent odor of, you know, and just not pleasant. >> we definitely noticed, like really awful pungent smell about two, three weeks ago. and from pickleball players to people coming out of this preschool, we're hearing complaints about this smell. >> the reason why the brewery is right down the block, the hole 2 or 3 block radius smells like poop all the time. ben man was picking up his daughter from preschool. >> as soon as i get out of the car, it's just overwhelming.

like you can't miss it. in fact, i just saw somebody getting out of their car over there and they were like, oh, it smells like poop. >> the smell apparently coming from old wastewater treatment tanks used in anchor's brewing process. a spokesperson for the brewery's new owner told the san francisco chronicle that the tanks weren't decommissioned properly, so they've now brought in crews to demolish the tanks. everyone from residents to runners to dog walkers starting to lose patience. >> it kind of smells like maneuver. it's it kind of smells like picking up horse poop. and, you know, i've done that before. you find yourself trying to take another route to places to avoid the smoke. unfortunately, sometimes i don't have that option. but yeah, i'll i'll try to avoid this little park right here. >> meanwhile, efforts to get the place cleaned up. continue. no word on when the smell is expected to fade away. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> let's take a live look outside tonight. we have some changes on the way, and not just for the bay area. there is

concern about lightning this weekend for california, especially up north where the park fire is burning. let's get a look at what's on the way with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya? yeah ama active weather is going to continue across parts of california. >> i do want to show you live doppler seven. not only have we had showers come through here, but there have been thunderstorms across parts of california. the sierra in particular, southern california and even northern california, where red flag warnings are still going. the greatest threat of dry lightning tomorrow will stretch from northern california all the way across the sierra, down towards the southern part of the state. and as we take a look at conditions near the park fire right now, it is still warm. 91 degrees, relative humidity 24%. the good news is the winds are light out of the east five miles an hour. looking at our local radar, this has been a welcome sight in august we've seen some spotty light showers. it's been trace amounts from san jose to livermore. as we get you in closer, you will notice a couple of showers from

san pablo to richmond, castro street, street level radar. as you will notice right around san rafael. also into marinwood north san pedro road, getting a few drops out there around larkspur as well. i'll let you know how long the possibility of showers will remain and that threat of thunder coming right up. ama. >> all right. thank you, sandia. we'll check back. the weather is expected to hamper efforts to contain the park fire, which continues to burn north of chic. it's larger than the entire city of los angeles. the wildfire is the fourth largest in the state's history and has destroyed 400,000 acres. cal fire is warning conditions could be challenging, with thunderstorms expected on saturday. temperatures will then climb through sunday. the fire is 25% contained. closer to home, the creek fire in sunol is fully contained tonight. it started a week ago near the calaveras calaveras reservoir and burned 744 acres. there was an evacuation order, but it was lifted on monday. no buildings were destroyed or damaged. the cause of that fire is still

under investigation. we've learned engine failure was the likely cause of a plane crash today in the hills south of livermore. the preliminary investigation by the ntsb points to a complete loss of engine power in the air, which led to a forced landing. this morning, the plane took off from concord and the faa says it went down around 915 this morning, landing, as you see upside down. the pilot was the only one on board and was not hurt. contra costa county is losing one of its biggest employers after chevron announced it's moving its headquarters to texas. chevron has had its main offices in san ramon for decades now. most of those jobs are being transferred to houston. it's something chevron has been hinting at for years. some blame regulations in california. others say chevron has benefited from being in the bay area. >> they have fully embraced some of our most stringent clean air requirements in the bay area. our safety requirements in contra costa county. >> the company took on the progressive values in many ways that the bay area had. chevron

offered domestic partner benefits to same sex couples before the state of california did. >> the move doesn't affect the richmond refinery and its 3000 employees. the president of the bay area council blames state lawmakers for chevron's move. in a statement, jim wunderman says, quote, it's an embarrassment for california that we've lost so many global companies because of misguided policies that make it incredibly difficult to do business here. a san francisco couple is in mourning after a pack of coyotes attacked and killed their dog during a walk along baker beach. they were with their three dogs on thursday morning when they were surrounded by five coyotes. >> my partner grabbed two of the dogs i was trying to grab, peter, the third dog, and one of the coyotes grabbed him before i could grab him, and they took him about ten yards off the beach and uh- killed him in front of us. >> oh, it's just awful. >> justin rivard says the whole incident took place in a matter of seconds and has left him his partner and their other two dogs

traumatized. officials from the california department of fish and wildlife say they believe coyotes are becoming more aggressive, partly due to food and trash left out at places like beaches, and because the animals are becoming less afraid of humans. vice president kamala harris has made history, becoming the first black woman and asian american candidate to lead a major party ticket. she secured the democratic party's presidential nomination during a virtual vote today, and attention now shifts to who will be her running mate. abc's zohreen shah has a look at the candidates. >> kamala harris making history as the first black woman and asian american candidate to lead a major party ticket during a virtual dnc vote. >> i am honored to be the presumptive democratic nominee for president of the united states, harris calling in to mark the moment and as your future president, i know we are up to this fight. and when we fight, everyone will say in unison, we win. >> it was only 12 days ago that

president biden made the announcement that he would not continue running for a second term and endorsed harris. she now becomes the only candidate in half a century to become the nominee without a single primary vote. but national polling shows that right now she has a better chance of beating trump than biden did when he dropped out of the race, according to fivethirtyeight. she is up a point and a half over trump in national polls and even within swing states. she's closing the gap that biden had against trum. she's pulling slightly ahead of trump in michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. those could be factors she takes into consideration when picking her running mate. biden says he is weighing in on the talks, too. have you spoken to vice president harris about her running mate? >> yes. >> abc has confirmed arizona senator and retired astronaut mark kelly, the husband of former congresswoman gabby giffords, minnesota governor tim walz and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, also a former prosecutor. like harris, all are being vetted. shapiro was expected to headline fundraisers in new york. for harris, now

canceling his weekend plans. do you expect kamala harris to ask you to run with this success here? >> so i think that's a question for the vice president ahead. >> are you working on being in philadelphia on tuesday by chance? >> i hope to be, yeah. >> harris is expected to announce who her vice president will be in the next few days. zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. >> new at 11. chip maker nvidia is facing an antitrust probe from u.s. regulators. that's according to tech website the information. the doj is apparently looking into claims the santa clara based company is cornering the market. allegations include nvidia threatening to punish those who buy from both them and competitors. nvidia denies the claims in a statement, saying it wins on merit. the san francisco giants are hoping to make a playoff push and blake snell did his part tonight, making history with a no hitter. abc seven news sports director larry beil has more. >> ama blake snell was not sure if the giants were going to keep him at the trade deadline a few days ago. snell wanted to stay.

he ultimately did, and he made history tonight. the giants in cincinnati and snell was absolutely dealing. throws the 18th no hitter in giants history. now snell had never even pitched into the ninth inning of a game before. but he threw 114 pitches in this one. struck out 11 final out right there as the giants beat the reds three zero. nice way to get your first win as a giant that you were going to be feeling. >> just locked in. >> got him, coach hank. hey. it's cold. got him. >> i got to collect my breath. please. do they get a replay of that? that's how you not. you don't do it. hit me in the head with the dang lid. >> i mean, there comes a point in time where it's kind of destiny for him. especially the way he's been throwing. that's as nervous as i've been in a long time. i wanted that for him so bad. you know, if anybody has the stuff to know, a throw a no hitter, it's blake snell. and finally, you know, came through, pitched nine innings no hit ball. so he's got that feather in his cap which is pretty cool.

chauvin trial. the police officer was accused and then convicted of murdering george floyd, a case that became a focus of black lives matter. the san francisco chronicle reports amber lucas and colin metcalf pleaded no contest to accusations that they spattered pig's blood on the former home of a witness in the trial, who was a police officer. they also vandalized a statue in downtown santa rosa. sentencing will be held later this summer. now to a story we've been following in the north bay after bringing it to you first here on abc seven news at 11. there's another chapter in the battle over a loudspeaker message that pits a business owner against a

homeless encampment. today, a marin county judge stopped the business from blasting that message and music to annoy unhoused residents. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more from san rafael. >> yeah, that is loud. >> earlier this year, the sound of classical music was blasting from this security camera pole in the direction of this san rafael homeless encampment where bruce gaylord lives. they played 36 hours of music. gaylord said the decibel levels were too high to sleep. >> the first night i got half a night's sleep. the next two nights i couldn't sleep at all and ended up in the hospital. >> you are trespassing. please leave the area. >> the sound coming from nearby east bay tire shop. some believe it was a way to get people to leave the encampment. yeah, peaked out at 118db. >> gaylord went to court in may and was granted a temporary restraining order to stop the music. >> and on friday, a marin superior court judge granted

gaylord's request for an injunction until a trial date, which says defendants are not to play music from any speaker or sound system outside their store. between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. >> it means that that business owners cannot break the law to harass unhoused people here in marin. >> east bay tire declined to speak to abc7 news on friday, but told us last may the sound machine was a way to deter activity spilling over from the camp from illegal drug use to prostitution, managers said the music was not intended to drive out camp residents. instead, it was about keeping employees safe. >> we have guys get here at 530 in the morning. they're all by themselves. we do 24 hour roadside service, so technicians show up in the middle of the night to grab a tire. it's three in the morning. they're alone. >> in the wake of governor gavin newsom's executive order directing state agencies to clear homeless camps, it's unclear what the future of this camp and others will be. for now, bruce gaylord says he's

staying here, looking forward to some quiet nights ahead. >> the judge, doing a nine page statement was very thorough, and i appreciated him very much for what he did in san rafael. >> cornel bernard, abc seven news. >> new developments with the basketball game, where a 13 year old boy was stomped on in the middle of that game. this was in alameda. we've learned the case will likely go to the da's office on monday. last month, players from two bay area teams were in a scuffle to get possession of the ball. two kids ended up on the floor and that's when one stomped on his opponent's head, giving him a concussion. the lawyer for the injured player's family says police have wrapped up their investigation. the opposing team said the kid who did the stomping was getting help to, quote, control his emotions. it's been decades in the making and tonight the bart silicon valley extension is a step closer to finishing. the federal government has just awarded the project $5.1 billion. it's the second largest investment like

this for a single transport project. the final phase will bring four more stations to the south bay, including downtown san jose, but there is still a $700 million shortfall. we're going to have to work with our contractors to get really confirmed that what we're spending and how to shave that down to the to the best that we can to make sure we're living within our budget. vta will own the facilities and bart will operate and maintain it. the bart silicon valley extension is expected to be completed by 2037. the end of an era after 50 years, aerosmith is retiring from touring and canceling all scheduled concerts. frontman steven tyler is unable to recover from a voice injury. he had a fractured larynx. aerosmith was scheduled to play at san francisco's chase center in november and san jose's sap center in december. the band posted a letter on social platforms they think bandmates, crew members and their many fans, ending it with, quote, dream on, you've made our dreams

come true. just a normal day in south lake tahoe, a woman woke up on monday to a black bear wandering in her front yard, so she grabbed her phone to record it. well by the time that happened, a smaller bear had joined in and the two bears started wrestling. this went on for several minutes and i could watch it for several more minutes. i love seeing animals. all right, let's get a check on our weather. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. hard to top the bears wrestling. yeah, i was going to say i don't think anybody can bring anything better than that. >> ama, let's take a look at live doppler seven from a fire weather perspective, though, the moisture that we have is actually beneficial. okay, that's a little bit better, right? live doppler seven is like, no, i want to see the bears live doppler seven will show you where it has been sprinkling or showering right now. we take you into street level radar from highway 101 to novato. heading into black point. you will notice a few returns and also the same thing

from hercules to crockett. el sobrante across 8-80 now, some of this has been evaporating before it reaches the ground. but all of this is monsoon moisture that is wrapping around area of high pressure. there are two centers and that's coming right back around, and it has been producing the thunderstorms in the sierra parts of northern and southern california. as you look at the moisture, it will remain moist in the morning hours. and then by the afternoon here in the bay area, things kind of shift. but certainly the concern is still there for dry lightning in the sierra and parts of northern california. temperatures or dew points. excuse me. right now you will notice they're a little bit elevated. 61 degrees in san rafael, 62 in napa, 61 in san jose, making it feel a little muggy out there. we're not used to this, obviously, but in august we do get the monsoon flow, bringing the humidity up 50 to 80 right now on those temperatures. a live view from our emeryville camera. and we certainly have a little bit of fog out there tonight through tomorrow morning. a few showers, a thunderstorm, chance for tomorrow. mainly this weekend.

hot inland, comfortable at the coast and early next week our summer heat continues so we go hour by hour midnight. you will notice still those showers around going into tomorrow. very early plans. i would keep an umbrella handy just because we'll see a few spotty showers at 4 a.m. continuing into 8 a.m. before it moves on out of here and stays well north and east of the bay area for the afternoon and evening hours. in the morning. there will be fog near the coast like we have right now. 50s coast side inland areas in the upper 60s to the mid 70s and once again some spotty showers showing up tomorrow afternoon. here's how it's going to look in the south bay 97 in morgan hill, 89 in san jose on the peninsula. it's a warmer day. 86 redwood city, 60 three half moon bay, downtown san francisco 70 degrees north bay. temperatures mid 90s around sonoma. santa rosa 91, in san rafael in the east bay, oakland and berkeley in the upper 70s. 82 newark 83. fremont had inland and it's going to be sizzling

101 in fairfield, 98in livermore, 97 degrees in concord. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. triple digit heat for a day. and then we'll drop those numbers a little bit on sunday. cooling continues on monday before things turn around, and the triple digits are back heating up again on tuesday. with that heat continuing on wednesday. before we see those temperatures moving down closer to where they should be for this time of year. but ama, it has definitely been a hot july 1st. for the record books for many cities here in the bay area, so it's still august, still summer, still summer. >> exactly. all right. thanks, sandhya. we'll be right back. though the bears. >> i love it
