vice president kamala harris. what that would look like as harris gets closer to deciding on a running mate. but first, a smelly problem for anchor brewing by neighbors are covering their nose when passing by its facility. good morning everybody. it's saturday, august 3rd. let's get right to your forecast. lisa is here and it's going to be another hot one today. >> yes. it's not like august is bringing much relief. i mean, we do have a return to our marine layer throughout the rest of the day today, but right now we are still tracking that subtropical moisture through the sierra nevada. you can see the lightning bolts there and the rain moving up through chico and redding. hopefully not starting any more fires back home. we've had just a little bit of precip and most of the activity has been in the higher elevations, and we are seeing a return to the low clouds and fog there. it is from mount tam. it is 57 downtown, 62, in hayward. so yes, the numbers are very mild and you can see the compressed marine layer from emeryville 61 santa rosa, mid 60s by the delta 67, in livermore. so that is 4

to 10 degrees milder for your saturday. a lot of cloud cover to start out. and then by the nine 10:00 hour we've got 70s inland and the clouds clearing the marine layer up against the coast this afternoon. but look at the highs today. we are flirting with 100 degrees again inland. warmer everywhere. cooler. sunday details coming up stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. developing news the weather is expected to hamper efforts to contain the fourth largest fire in the state's history. the park fire. we've been telling you about, which continues to burn north of chico. for comparison, it's more than six times the size of sacramento. now, even bigger than los angeles. it's destroyed nearly 400,000 acres. cal fire is warning conditions could be challenging with thunderstorms and potential for dry lightning expected today. temperatures will then climb through sunday. the fire is currently 25% contained in the east bay. the creek fire in sunol has been fully contained.

it started about a week ago near the calaveras reservoir and burned 744 acres. there was an evacuation order, but it was lifted on monday. no buildings were damaged or destroyed, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we're also following developing news this morning. engine failure is likely the cause of a plane crash that happened in the hills south of livermore. the preliminary investigation by the ntsb points to a complete loss of engine power in the air. it led to a forced landing yesterday. the plane took off from concord. the faa says it went down around 915 in the morning, landing upside down as you can see, the pilot was the only one on board and thankfully was not hurt. a san francisco couple is mourning after a pack of coyotes attacked and killed their dog during a walk along baker beach. they were with their three dogs on thursday morning when they were surrounded by five coyotes. >> partner grabbed two of the

dogs. i was trying to grab peter, the third dog, and one of the coyotes grabbed him before i could grab him, and they took him about ten yards off the beach and, killed him in front of us. >> just devastating. justin rivard said. it happened in a matter of seconds. he says he and his partner, along with their two other dogs, are now traumatized. the california department of fish and wildlife say coyotes are becoming more aggressive, and it's partly due to food and trash left out at places like beaches. and because the animals are less afraid of humans, well, complaints are brewing over a foul odor coming from the anchor brewery here in san francisco. and the smell is so bad it's being compared to manure, among other things. the brewery is located on mariposa street in the potrero hill neighborhood. those who live near it say they first noticed the stench. this week. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to the neighbors.

>> pickle balls aren't the only thing wafting through the air in potrero hill. a particular smell is capturing people's attention every week while i'm trying to play, it just smells like we've just been referring to it as like the bad breath smell. they're talking about a foul odor coming from the anchor brewing company. sapporo sold the beloved brewery in may. it's now gearing up to reopen. >> it just comes in and whiffs and waves and it's just a very strong, pungent odor of, you know, and just not pleasant. >> we definitely noticed, like, really awful pungent smell about two, three weeks ago. >> and from pickleball players to people coming out of this preschool, we're hearing complaints about this smell. the reason why the brewery is right down the block, the whole 2 or 3 block radius smells like poop. >> all the time. >> ben man was picking up his daughter from preschool. >> as soon as i get out of the car, it's just overwhelming. like you can miss it. in fact, i just saw somebody getting out of their car over there and they

were like, oh, it smells like poop. >> the smell apparently coming from old wastewater treatment tanks used in anchor's brewing process. >> a spokesperson for the brewery's new owner told the san francisco chronicle that the tanks weren't decommissioned properly, so they've now brought in crews to demolish the tanks. everyone from residents to runners to dog walkers starting to lose patience. >> it kind of smells like maneuver. it's kind of smells like picking up horse poop. and, you know, i've done that before. you find yourself trying to take another route to places to avoid the smoke. unfortunately, sometimes i don't have that option. but yeah, i'll i'll try to avoid this little park right here. >> meanwhile, efforts to get the place cleaned up continue. no word on when the smell is expected to fade away. tara campbell, abc seven news contra costa county is losing one of its biggest employers. >> chevron announced it's moving its headquarters to texas. chevron had its main offices in san ramon for decades now. most

of those jobs are being transferred to houston. it's something chevron has been hinting at for years now. some blame regulations here in california. others say chevron has benefited from being in the bay area. >> they have fully embraced some of our most stringent clean air requirements in the bay area. our safety requirements in contra costa county. >> the company took on the progressive values in many ways that the bay area had. chevron offered domestic partner benefits to same sex couples before the state of california did. >> the move does not affect the richmond refinery and its 3000 employees. the president of the bay area council blames state lawmakers for chevron's move in a statement, jim wunderman says, quote, it's an embarrassment for california that we've lost so many global companies because of misguided policies that make it incredibly difficult to do business here. now, to your voice, your vote. republican presidential nominee donald trump says he'll participate in a september 4th debate hosted by

fox news. the former president made the announcement yesterday in a post on truth social. he says he won't take part in the abc debate that he previously agreed to. trump says the fox debate would take place in pennsylvania in front of a live audience. it's unclear if vice president kamala harris has accepted the invitation from fox news, or if she would agree to the new debate terms. and today, mr. trump hits the campaign trail in a state that will likely be key to victory. this as vice president kamala harris narrows down her choice for a running mate. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has more on this historical race. >> former president trump and his running mate, ohio senator jd vance, are holding a campaign rally in atlanta, georgia, this evening. trump narrowly lost the state to joe biden in 2020, and the polls indicate a tight race between him and vice president harris. harris made history as the first black woman and asian american candidate to lead a major party ticket that moment, during a virtual dnc vote friday

to the 2021 derek chauvin trial. the police officer was accused and then convicted of murdering george floyd. according to the chronicle, amber lucas and colin metcalf pled no contest to accusations they splattered pig's blood on the former home of a witness in that trial, who was also a police officer. they also vandalized a statue in downtown santa rosa. sentencing will be held later this summer. we're also learning two people have been arrested for an

alleged arson fire at a homeless encampment. that's a fire on tuesday to place that displaced several people camping at lee gerner park in novato. thankfully, no one was hurt, but the camp was destroyed. evidence indicates the fire started inside a tent. the suspects were occupying a nearby vacant home when they were arrested. this camp was authorized and regulated, so the city is deciding whether to rebuild. a san rafael business is stopping its sound system because it's accused of using music to annoy residents of a nearby homeless encampment. one of those residents is bruce gaylord. he says he had trouble sleeping because of this loud music, so he sued east bay tire. a marin county judge granted an injunction. it forces the tire shop to stop the music between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. until the matter is settled in court. >> it means that that business owners cannot break the law to

harass unhoused people. >> east bay tire did not want to comment about the injunction, but last may, it told abc seven news the music was meant to deter illegal drug use from approaching the encampment and to keep its employees safe. a historic step has been made towards finishing the bart silicon valley extension. the federal government awarded billions in funding to vta to make it happen. it's the second largest investment like it in us history. abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on the timeline. >> a project decades in the making has now received a rare influx of federal funding. the bart silicon valley extension is the largest single public infrastructure project in santa clara county. its final phase is slated to bring four more stations to the south bay, including downtown san jose. vta will own the facilities, and bart will operate and maintain it. >> people can get all around the region, know they have a reliable way to get there, and have a transportation so you can

live in the south bay and work anywhere else in the region, and you can get jobs to your jobs in silicon valley. >> but the road to finishing the project has been bumpy. that includes delays and increasing costs, all while bart expects to run out of $1.9 billion in federal and state assistance by april of 2026. but friday, local leaders got a call from the federal transportation administration. billions in funding is being granted to help finish the project, $5.1 billion. >> this is the second largest investment that the federal government has made in any single transportation project in the country's history. >> vta had to compete with other transit agencies across the country for the funding. local leaders say multiple factors played into what set the project apart, including the amount of tax dollars that helped fund it through voter approved measures. >> we taxed ourselves more locally than any other region to make this project possible, so it's really the sacrifice and leadership of the residents of

our community who have made this possible. still there's a $700 million gap to close. >> we're going to have to work with our contractors to get really confirmed that what we're spending and how to shave that down to the to the best that we can to make sure we're living within our budget. >> it may mean rescoping parts of work officials say has to happen fast, since projects this large see costs escalate at least 5% every year, we're going to have to be ruthlessly disciplined about watching the taxpayers dollars every step of the way. >> the bart silicon valley extension is expected to be completed by 2037. in the south bay, zach fuentes abc seven news in southern california, death valley national park set major records during the statewide heat wave earlier this summer. >> park officials say july was the hottest month ever at the park. the average daily temperature was. get this 108.5 degrees. temperatures hit 120 degrees, though for majority of the month and the hottest day was 129 degrees on july seventh.

and lisa, i saw the numbers for the bay area. as always, san francisco stood out because we know karl the fog, but it's been hot across the board. >> yeah, it really has. you just have to move a couple of miles away from the coast, and you're well into the 80s in the on the peninsula, even some 90s this past july, the north bay has been warm. and yesterday we added the humidity to the mix and that extra cloud cover, it felt a little sticky and i think it felt warmer than it was. it was just 83 in san jose, but it felt a lot warmer than that. we had a few 90s in our inland valleys and as you look at live doppler seven, you can see the activity moving up the spine of the sierra nevada from the central sierra to the northern sierra, up through chico and northern california. so hopefully not starting any more fires. but the elevated moisture, you know, is always kind of a good thing. but the temperatures are warm. we go in closer and it has been raining in lake tahoe. also blue canyon. and it continues to lift to the north by the second half of the

day. this will pretty much be eliminated. we're getting into a drier, more stable air mass. at the shoreline is our marine layer reforms, but you can see the rotation of that counterclockwise, bringing in a little bit of precip to our mountains. there's a look at that marine layer. how lovely it is from sfo that compressed marine layer. and also some elevated cloud cover. it is 57 half moon bay and san francisco with low 60s in oakland hayward good morning to you. get set for some more warm weather along the bay shore starting today. 65 in san jose right now. and our exploratorium camera. it is looking pretty nice there with low 60s santa rosa. it has been mild overnight with mid 60s by the delta 67 in livermore and from our roof camera pretty view here. that marine layer trying to get back in place. the breezy onshore winds coming into play throughout the afternoon. outside chance of a slight shower thunderstorm more likely outside the bay, but the periphery can't rule it out as

for a likely retaliatory iranian attack on israel. we'll have more on that in just a moment. but first, we're going to start this half hour with a look at the weather. lisa is here with more on where the heat is sticking around. >> yes, we've had that unusual weather yesterday. the showers in livermore, also in concord, this morning. beautiful sunrise. we have the marine layer reforming and still some rain outside the bay area. there's a look from our roof camera. we can see the layering of clouds. it's 57 downtown, 65 in san jose. so mild there, 62 in hayward and emeryville. that low cloud deck mixed in with some higher clouds with upper 60s. in livermore only mid 50s in petaluma. so overall everyone is a lot warmer this morning. the cloud cover insulated us last night. that relative humidity has been elevated the past couple of days, so the next several hours we'll get back into a breezy onshore flow just 60s at the coast with partly sunny conditions, increasing sun with near 80 around the bay shore. that's a warm up for

hayward. redwood city today, san jose and then inland will be in the mid to upper 90s, maybe even a few triple digits out by the delta today. stephanie. >> lisa. thank you. we're following breaking news this morning. iran says a short range projectile killed hamas political chief ismail haniyeh. iran is blaming that attack that happened earlier this week on israel and accuses the us of supporting the attack. the country made the comments in a televised address just hours ago. israel has pledged to kill hania and other hamas leaders over the october 7th attack on israel and the assassination of the hamas leader is sparking fears of a wider conflict in the middle east. now, this comes as iran is doubling down that it will retaliate. now the u.s. is sending additional military assets to help defend israel. abc news reporter matt rivers has more on the effort to de-escalate tensions. >> the biden administration

bracing for a potential escalation in the middle east. the pentagon announcing it will deploy additional us cruisers, destroyers and fighter jets to protect israel. >> the secretary will be directing multiple forthcoming force posture moves to bolster force protection. >> it comes as iran and its allies promise to retaliate following the assassination of top hamas political official ismail haniyeh in tehran in april, iran coordinated an unprecedented direct attack against israel in response to a deadly strike on the iranian consulate in syria. the us and its allies helping intercept nearly all of the more than 300 missiles and drones targeting israel. amid concerns of another iranian retaliation and his funeral prayers, taking place in doha, sources say haniyeh was killed by an explosive smuggled into his room at an islamic revolutionary guard corps guesthouse. the device, stashed inside roughly two months ago as

part of an israeli plot, as first reported by the new york times. the assassination threatening to upend ceasefire negotiations between israel and hamas. president biden saying he fears the violence could escalate, but the chance for a ceasefire ruined after the assassination of haniyeh. >> he's not helped in the pentagon, not providing any specific timeline for when those additional military assets will be in position. >> meanwhile, across israel, authorities are urging people here to stay close to their safe rooms and have a couple of days provisions on hand in case of power outages. matt rivers abc news in tel aviv, israel. >> well, back here at home, the acting secret service director, ronald rose, says the agency should have had eyes on the roof where a shooter fired at former president donald trump during a news conference. he stressed the secret service is ultimately to blame for the security failures. rose also emphasized local police should not be held solely responsible for what led up to

the shooting. >> every single person within the secret service feels the weight of what happened. the men and women of the secret service are working incredibly hard and doing their jobs under difficult circumstances. take a look at what happened, rowe added. >> the secret service will need to gain back the public's trust. now to this. a $4 billion settlement has been reached over the wildfires that devastated maui last year. hawaii governor josh green announced the settlement yesterday. he says it will help the people of maui heal. seven defendants are listed in the settlement, including the state, the county of maui and hawaiian electric. the settlement still needs to be approved by the court. the fires burned over 2000 acres in lahaina and caused billions of dollars in damage. more than 100 people were killed here in the bay area. three alameda police officers have been charged after a man died in police custody. demonstrators held up signs outside an oakland courtroom. as

you see here, the officers are james fisher, eric mckinley and cameron lee. they're charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of mario gonzalez. you may remember, gonzalez died while being restrained on the ground, with one officer putting an elbow on his neck and a knee on his shoulder, pinning him to the ground for more than five minutes until he lost consciousness. his family wants harsher charges. >> facts are there, and, we want to see them charged with murder. you know, they killed somebody. >> use of force never looks pretty by way of body cam, but that's more often than not does not yield it unlawful. and so is the case here. >> the defense attorney criticized the da for charging the three officers. one of the three officers is no longer employed by the city of alameda. the other two are currently on administrative leave. the officers did not enter a plea. we're also tracking new details on a basketball game where a 13 year old boy was stomped on in

alameda. the case will likely go to the da's office on monday. last month, players from two bay area teams were in a scuffle to get the ball. two kids ended up on the floor and that's when one stomped on his opponent's head, giving him a concussion. the lawyer for the injured player's family says. police wrapped up their investigation. the opposing team said the kid that did the stomping was getting help to, quote, control his emotions. now, this comes as there's a significant new development related to the prosecution of crimes in alameda county. state officials have reached an agreement with the doj. it allows california national guard attorneys to prosecute cases in alameda county. this comes after the arrests of over 560 suspects in just a six month surge. governor gavin newsom has criticized alameda county da pamela price for not accepting help. earlier in a statement, though, price said her office welcomes the

help even though there's no record of a large number of cases from the chp surge coming to her office. she wrote, quote, since march of this year, the alameda county district attorney's office has received only 11 cases identified as chp surge cases. new this morning, san jose airport will receive the funding necessary to start on a new terminal and runway. bay area congressional members jointly announced that two federal grants for over $18 million was awarded yesterday. the federal aviation commission and organization with the u.s. transportation department provided that funding. it's not clear, though, when construction may start. we'll stay posted on that. still ahead on abc seven mornings, the sport that's making a difference for people with disabilities. but a north bay team needs a boost in order to keep it going. we'll explain. and here's a live look atop our roof camera. see a slight breeze this saturday morning at 637. we'll be

people with disabilities active, competitive and to make lifelong friends. but a north bay group is finding it's actually tough to play this team sport. abc seven news anchor and race and social justice reporter julian glover introduces you to the team. >> all right, all right. >> on a sunday afternoon, inside of a small gym in downtown santa rosa, ian kinmont leads the santa rosa phoenix's power soccer practice. never heard of power soccer before? we've got you covered. the game has two halves, 20 minutes each with teams of four using modified motorized wheelchairs to ram the ball into the goal. for wheelchair users like ian, who was born with cerebral palsy and has played since he was 14, the sport is more than just a game.

>> i feel very free when i when i'm going down the court and i'm passing the ball, and it always makes me very happy to see people smiling and having fun. >> ian's mother, naomi houppert, saw how the sport changed him by providing him with a basic need so many of us take for granted friendship. >> i think the most important piece of it is that it really creates an opportunity to have friends that are really connected over multiple years, and that's something that you don't often get, especially among people with a disability. >> but like most activities for people with disabilities, there are financial and logistical challenges. many in the community survive on low or fixed incomes post-pandemic. budget cuts continue to severely limit state and county funded disability transportation programs that means the hardest part about practices is getting there. >> in a place like sonoma

county, which is largely rural, there's no public transportation system that's really effective. paratransit systems are limited. the need to plan ahead multiple days for anything that you would like to request is not conducive to engaging in recreation or social activities, and so that's a huge challenge, naomi says they struggled at first to find any recreational activities for ian where they live in west sonoma county. >> the search took them all the way to the power soccer club in berkeley over an hour away. they made that trek weekly, but the pandemic blew the whistle on that. so ian decided to coach his own squad in the north bay and the santa rosa ymca stepped up and donated facilities. >> i've played for 11 years now, and now i can. i'm starting to learn how to spin, kick and score, and i've done a couple of tournaments now and it's just it's really been a blast.

>> karen washburn began playing after having a limb removed due to an accident over a decade ago. she says the game gives her a sense of belonging. >> the nice thing is it's a good activity for you to get together with other people that also are disabled and where you're not judged, you can have a lot of fun and you kind of feel more like you're normal again because you're getting to play a sport. >> ian's mother, naomi, is realistic but optimistic that local government can step up with resources in the future, we'll figure out ways to have the county and other programs support players that want to play, but don't have the capacity, to show up regularly because they don't have transportation or they don't have aides. there is no doubt that the long term challenges ian and his teammates face are daunting. but for ian, introducing power soccer to more people with disabilities could be the key to overcoming them.

dodgers at 607 tonight here at the coliseum. lisa, how's it looking? >> you know it's looking pretty mild and a little bit of breeze out there. we will eliminate this moisture chance throughout the afternoon, but we still have it with us. this morning we saw some sprinkles from danville to livermore, point reyes. and you can see all along the spine of the sierra nevada from the central sierra to the northern sierra. and those lightning strikes, unfortunately, the rain ending around blue canyon, and it continues to move up and around parts of the bay area. but as we get into the second half of the day, that marine layer getting more established, it has this morning. but you can see some of the sprinkles here offshore. and then a lot of this not reaching the ground. and right here from our sutro tower camera that is salesforce at over 700ft. so the marine layer at about 650 and temperatures in the mid 50s, 65. in san jose it is 62. in redwood city, a warmer day is on tap. we're looking at temperatures anywhere from 2 to

5 degrees warmer. it is 61 in santa rosa with 55 petaluma and temperatures in the mid 60s inland to the upper 60s in livermore. so it has been mild to muggy out there. our roof camera, a bit of a breeze and the partly cloudy conditions. so our forecast headlines the clouds this morning. slight chance of a sprinkle out there. and then through the afternoon we get that breezy onshore flow and a wide range of temperatures from near 60 along the shoreline to about 100 inland. so it's a hot weekend, although we will be slightly cooler for your sunday. and then the temperatures come back up the middle of the week. tuesday and wednesday look to be the warmest days inland. this is where we have the shower and thunderstorm chance still throughout the day today. dry lightning a possibility. hopefully no new fire starts, but from the sierra nevada, the central valley here up through the northern sacramento valley and extreme northern california. and then we will look at the cloud cover locally. really begin to clear on out the next

few hours. that leaves us with a sunny afternoon. the clouds banked up along the coastline and temperatures just in the 60s there, the mist and drizzle coming back overnight into your early sunday, and then we'll look at a couple of days where we'll have temperatures in the mid 90s before we heat up again on tuesday. it's a warmer day today. you thought it was warm yesterday with the humidity, but from the mid 80s from milpitas to near 90 in san jose, los gatos, about 94 yesterday in the upper 70s in parts of redwood city, palo alto. but you can see at least 2 to 6 degrees warmer on the peninsula. the breezy winds, though mild, 70 degrees today in san francisco with some sun, mid 90s santa rosa. that's a heat up as we get into the mid 90s. calistoga and right by the water upper 80s to near 90. in vallejo 81 san leandro warming up in union city at 8394 san ramon and about 100 today in pittsburgh. so the accuweather seven day forecast hot one
