the new comments coming from vice president kamala harris this morning. but first, a smelly problem for anchor brewing. why neighbors are covering their nose when passing by. its facility. good morning everybody. it's saturday, august third i'm stephanie sierra. we begin with the weather. lisa is here and that heat returns. yes, the heat returns and the moisture is moving out of here. >> so in terms of the park fire, good news, bad news scenario, you see a little bit of moisture and the cloud cover, which is sort of some good news, but that comes with the possibility of lightning strikes. as we get in closer, you can see it has been raining in the sierra nevada, but this moisture winding down, we're getting back into a stable environment with our low cloud deck. and from emeryville right now you can see some sunshine. it is mild from the upper 50s downtown, upper 60s in hayward, and from mount tam. westerly flow today will allow for the cool air at the coast already in the mid 70s inland. so as we go through the rest of the morning hours, look at the 80s arriving

and then stopping this late in the day where we've peaked at the upper 90s to near 100 inland. but the clouds and the cool temperatures at the coast today we'll talk about a slightly cooler sunday in a few minutes. steph. >> all right, lisa, thank you. developing news now the weather as lisa was just mentioning, is expected to hamper efforts to contain the fourth largest fire in the state's history. we're talking about the park fire, which continues to burn north of chico. for comparison, it's more than six times the size of sacramento now. even bigger than la. it's destroyed nearly 400,000 acres. cal fire is warning conditions could be challenging with thunderstorms and potential for dry lightning expected today. temperatures will then climb through sunday. the fire is currently 25% contained in the east bay. the creek fire in sunol has been fully contained. it started about a week ago near the calaveras reservoir and burned 744 acres. there was an

evacuation order, but it was lifted on monday. no buildings were damaged or destroyed and the cause of this fire is still under investigation. developing news this morning. engine failure is likely the cause of a plane crash that happened in the hills south of livermore. the preliminary investigation by the ntsb points to a complete loss of engine power in the air. it led to a forced landing yesterday. the plane took off from concord. the faa says it went down around 915 in the morning. as you can see, landing upside down. the pilot was the only one on board and thankfully was not hurt. a san francisco couple is mourning after a pack of coyotes attacked and killed their dog during a walk along baker beach. they were actually with their three dogs on thursday morning when they were surrounded by five coyotes. >> my partner grabbed two of the dogs i was trying to grab. peter, the third dog, and one of the coyotes grabbed him before i could grab him, and they took him about ten yards off the

beach and uh- killed him in front of us. >> just devastating. justin rivard said. it happened in a matter of seconds. he says he and his partner, along with their two other dogs, are now traumatized. the california department of fish and wildlife say coyotes are becoming more aggressive. it's partly due to food and trash left out at places like beaches, and because the animals are less afraid of humans. complaints are brewing over a foul odor coming from the anchor brewery here in san francisco. the smell is so bad it's being compared to manure, among other things. the brewery is located on mariposa street in the potrero hill neighborhood. those who live near it say they first noticed the stench. this week. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to neighbor. >> pickle balls aren't the only thing wafting through the air in potrero hill. a particular smell is capturing people's attention every week while i'm trying to

play. >> it just smells like we've just been referring to it as like the bad breath smell. >> they're talking about a foul odor coming from the anchor brewing company. sapporo sold the beloved brewery in may. it's now gearing up to reopen. >> it just comes in and whiffs and waves, and it's just a very strong, pungent odor of you know, and just not pleasant. >> we definitely noticed, like, really awful, pungent smell about two, three weeks ago. >> and from pickleball players to people coming out of this preschool, we're hearing complaints about this smell. the reason why the brewery is right down the block, the whole 2 or 3 block radius smells like poop. >> all the time. >> ben man was picking up his daughter from preschool. >> as soon as i get out of the car, it's just overwhelming. like you can't miss it. in fact, i just saw somebody getting out of their car over there and they were like, oh, it smells like poop. >> the smell apparently coming from old wastewater treatment tanks used in anchor's brewing process. a spokesperson for the

brewery's new owner told the san francisco chronicle that the tanks weren't decommissioned properly, so they've now brought in crews to demolish the tanks. everyone from residents to runners to dog walkers starting to lose patience. >> it kind of smells like manure. it's it kind of smells like picking up horse poop. and you know, i've done that before. >> you find yourself trying to take another route to places to avoid the smoke. >> unfortunately, sometimes i don't have that option. but yea, i'll i'll try to avoid this little park right here. >> meanwhile, efforts to get the place cleaned up continue. no word on when the smell is expected to fade away. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> in the east bay now, contra costa county is losing one of its biggest employers. chevron announced it's moving its headquarters to texas. chevron had its main offices in san ramon for decades now. most of those jobs are being transferred to houston. it's something chevron has been hinting at for years now. some blame regulations in california, while

others say chevron has benefited from being here in the bay area. >> they have fully embraced some of our most stringent clean air requirements in the bay area. our safety requirements in contra costa county, the company took on the progressive values in many ways that the bay area had. >> chevron offered domestic partner benefits to same sex couples before the state of california did. >> the move does not affect the richmond refinery and its 3000 employees. the president of the bay area council blames state lawmakers for chevron's move. in a statement, jim wunderman says, quote, it's an embarrassment for california that we've lost so many global companies because of misguided policies that make it incredibly difficult to do business here. now, to your voice, your vote. vice president kamala harris says trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to. overnight former president donald trump posted that he won't take part

in the abc news debate that he previously said he would. but the invitation from abc news still stands for a debate next month. trump announced that a new debate would be hosted by fox news on september 4th. vice president kamala harris has not accepted that invitation yet. and today, mr. trump hits the campaign trail in a state that will be key to victory. this says vice president kamala harris, narrows down her choice for a running mate. abc news reporter chuck sivertsen has more on this historical race. >> former president trump and his running mate, ohio senator jd vance, are holding a campaign rally in atlanta, georgia, this evening. trump narrowly lost the state to joe biden in 2020, and the polls indicate a tight race between him and vice president harris. harris made history as the first black woman and asian american candidate to lead a major party ticket. that moment, during a virtual dnc vote friday, weeks before the dnc in chicago, harris, calling in to mark the occasion and as your

future president, i know we are up to this fight. >> and when we fight, everyone will say in unison, we win. >> the vice president saying she'll officially accept the democratic nomination monday when the virtual roll call concludes. it was less than two weeks ago. president biden announced he would not continue to seek a second term and endorsed harris. she's the only candidate in half a century to become the nominee without receiving a single primary vote, according to fivethirtyeight. she's up a point and a half over former president trump in the national polls and closing the gap biden had against him in key swing states, sources say. vice president harris plans to meet with some top vp contenders in person this weekend, including pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. abc news has confirmed he, along with arizona senator, retired astronaut mark kelly, minnesota governor tim walz and transportation secretary pete buttigieg are being considered. biden says he's weighing in on

it's 913. new developments to sonoma county residents have been found guilty of felony vandalism. it's in a case linked to the 2021 derek chauvin trial. the police officer was accused and then convicted of murdering george floyd, according to the chronicle. amber lucas and colin metcalf pled no contest to accusations they splattered pig's blood on the former home of a witness in that trial, who was also a police officer. they also vandalized a statue in downtown santa rosa. sentencing will be held later this summer. we're also learning two people have been arrested for an alleged arson fire at a homeless encampment. the fire on tuesday displaced several people camping at lee gerner park in novato. no one was hurt, but the camp was destroyed. evidence indicates the fire started inside a tent. the suspects were occupying a nearby vacant home when they were arrested. this camp was authorized and regulated, so the

city is deciding whether to rebuild a san rafael business is stopping its sound system because it's accused of using music to annoy residents of a nearby homeless encampment. one of those residents is bruce gaylord. he says he had trouble sleeping because of the loud music, so he sued east bay tire. a marin county judge granted an injunction. it forces the tire shop to stop the music between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. until the matter is settled in court. >> it means that that business owners cannot break the law to harass unhoused people. >> east bay tire did not want to comment about the injunction, but last may, it told abc seven news the music was meant to deter illegal drug use from approaching the encampment and to keep its employees safe. for all of our reporting around the homeless crisis, including expert analysis and how we got here, you can head to our website, abc7 news dot com or

your abc7 news app. a historic step has been made towards finishing the bart silicon valley extension. the federal government awarded billions in funding to vta to help make it happen. it's the second largest investment like it in u.s. history. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on the timeline. >> a project decades in the making has now received a rare influx of federal funding. the bart silicon valley extension is the largest single public infrastructure project in santa clara county. its final phase is slated to bring four more stations to the south bay, including downtown san jose. vta will own the facilities, and bart will operate and maintain it. >> people can get all around the region, know they have a reliable way to get there and have a transportation so you can live in the south bay and work anywhere else in the region, and you can get jobs to your jobs in silicon valley. >> but the road to finishing the project has been bumpy. that includes delays and increasing costs, all while bart expects to run out of $1.9 billion in

federal and state assistance by april of 2026. but friday, local leaders got a call from the federal transportation administration. billions in funding is being granted to help finish the project. >> $5.1 billion. this is the second largest investment that the federal government has made in any single transportation project in the country's history. >> vta had to compete with other transit agencies across the country for the funding. local leaders say multiple factors played into what set the project apart, including the amount of tax dollars that helped fund it through voter approved measures. >> we taxed ourselves more locally than any other region to make this project possible, so it's really the sacrifice of leadership of the residents of our community who have made this possible. >> still, there's a $700 million gap to close. >> we're going to have to work with our contractors to get really confirmed that what we're spending and how to shave that down to the to the best that we can to make sure we're living

within our budget, it may mean rescoping parts of work, officials say has to happen fast, since projects this large see costs escalate at least 5% every year, we're going to have to be ruthlessly disciplined about watching the taxpayers dollars every step of the way. >> the bart silicon valley extension is expected to be completed by 2037. in the south bay, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> in southern california, death valley national park set major records during the statewide heat wave earlier this month. park officials say july was the hottest month ever at the park. the average daily temperature was 108.5 degrees. temperatures hit 120 degrees or more for the majority of the month, and the hottest day was 129 degrees on july 7th. and lisa, i know we've been talking about this all morning. i saw the numbers for the bay area, as always, san francisco stood out because of karl the fog. but we're seeing this heat continue. >> yes, all month long we've been breaking records all over the bay area. it started with

the right before the 4th of july, and then it let up a little bit. but we had that extensive stretch where we had temperatures well into the triple digits. but really the grip has still been on the bay area and it continues for a couple of days into the first full week of august. as we look at live doppler seven. adding an interesting element yesterday was the elevated moisture, the higher relative humidity. this is on the way out, but not before it put down some showers in the mountains. you can see the lightning bolt there by south lake and then the clouds up towards northern california. and then as this pulls on out, our marine layer is certainly reforming. it has been all morning long, so this stable air allowing for the shower activity to be away from the bay area across the bay at. okay, look how it has cleared out. it was a pretty gray this morning. 59 in san francisco. it is 65. in oakland, 68, in hayward was 70. in san jose, redwood city, a warmer day for you at 64. and you can see the breeze kicking

up here on top of our roof where we've got upper 60s, santa rosa, mid 60s in napa and well into the 70s, livermore, fairfield with a southwest wind. and look at all the cloud cover around lake tahoe. so definitely some showers there this morning. thunderstorms this afternoon. back home we had clouds at the coast. those will stay put. it's going to be cool there. the afternoon sunny. we will see a hotter day today for saturday. slightly cooler for sunday, but then into next week. tuesday looks to be the hottest day. wednesday slightly cooler. so we'll spell that all out for you in our seven day outlook. but here's a look at our future cast, where that cloud cover and the moisture continues to lift up and out of the state of california. and then early tomorrow, the marine layer back in full force all the way across the bay. then it pulls back. we get mist and drizzle at the coast and once again, the clouds. with temperatures in the 60s at the shoreline for your sunday afternoon. but still, the outlook for thunderstorm activity includes the sierra

nevada today up through northern california. so around the fire there, hopefully no more lightning strikes with the possibility exists for the dry lightning, the clouds, and maybe even a few sprinkles. but more likely is it's obviously the lightning. we're concerned about. the westerly winds kick up throughout the day over 25 miles an hour to maybe 27. so it is breezy. skipping ahead to monday. we've got low 90s inland, so that bit of a cool down continues into monday. then look at tuesday once again near 100 degrees upper 90s in concord 99 calistoga, cloverdale 105. and we'll look at those 80s around the bay shore. we cool off somewhat on wednesday. today it's a warm one from 80 in palo alto to near 90 in the south bay, 95 in santa rosa, 100 in antioch, in the accuweather seven day forecast. it's hot inland, mild at the coast, slightly cooler sunday. not much change on monday, but the hottest day will be tuesday and then we'll see temperatures kind of trail off by the end of the

crack down on scams on payment apps like zelle and venmo. lawmakers aim to close loopholes in existing law. federal data shows consumers reported losing $210 million to fraudsters on these kinds of apps last year alone. that's 62% more th two years ago. chip maker nvidia is facing an antitrust probe from us regulators. the doj is looking into claims the santa clara based company is cornering the market. allegations include nvidia threatening to punish those who buy from both them and competitors. nvidia denies the claims in a statement, saying it wins on merit. before you go to sleep tonight, you should check your mattress pad. avocado mattresses are recalling over 55,000 of its organic cotton mattresses due to a fire hazard. they were sold at avocado stores nationwide and online from january 2019 through march. of

this year. thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but consumers are being told they should stop using those mattresses immediately and contact the company for a free replacement mattress pad. also new this morning, mortgage rates dropped slightly this week while they remain still uncomfortably high, rates did drop to the lowest level seen in over a year. this comes after a weaker than expected employment report from the labor department, according to mortgage news dail, the popular 30 year fixed mortgage rate dropped from 6.8% to 6.4%. that's the lowest rate since april 2023. now 15 year fixed rates also hit its lowest rate since may of the same year. it went down by almost 6%. and new this morning target announcing it is closing its east palo alto store. according to the chronicle, the closure will cut 85 jobs, though the

store says they will transfer employees to their mountain view and redwood city locations. a target spokesperson told the paper that the store is closing due to prolonged underperformance. last fall, target closed three bay area stores due to theft and organized retail crime that resulted in 200 job cuts. and also this just in this morning, a san francisco neighborhood staple of more than 60 years is closing in glen park. glen park hardware announced the closure by recently posting several signs on its doors and windows. its voice mail says they will be holding a liquidation sale of up to 50% off this weekend. the glen park association says the hardware store has been a much loved part of the neighborhood, and it's unclear if the building has been sold. coming up in our next half hour on abc seven mornings, $1 billion settlement has been reached in the maui wildfires case. plus sjc is about to get a big boost. what

>> all right, all right.. >> on a sunday afternoon, inside of a small gym in downtown santa rosa, ian kinmont leads the santa rosa phoenix's power soccer practice. never heard of power soccer before. we've got you covered. the game has two halves, 20 minutes each with teams of four using modified motorized wheelchairs to ram the ball into the goal. for wheelchair users like ian, who was born with cerebral palsy and has played since he was 14, the sport is more than just a game. >> i feel very free when i when i'm going down the court and i'm passing the ball, and it always makes me, very happy to see people smiling and having fun. >> ian's mother, naomi hubert, saw how the sport changed him by providing him with a basic need so many of us take for granted friendship. >> i think the most important piece of it is that it really

creates an opportunity to have friends that are really connected over multiple years, and that's something that you don't often get, especially among people with a disability. >> but like most activities for people with disabilities, there are financial and logistical challenges many in the community survive on low or fixed incomes post-pandemic. budget cuts continue to severely limit state and county funded disability transportation programs. that means the hardest part about practices is getting there. >> in a place like sonoma county, which is largely rural, there's no public transportation system that's really effective. paratransit systems are limited. the need to plan ahead multiple days for anything that you would like to request is not conducive to engaging in recreation or social activities, and so that's a huge challenge. >> naomi says they struggled at first to find any recreational activities for ian where they

live in west sonoma county. the search took them all the way to the power soccer club in berkeley over an hour away. they made that trek weekly, but the pandemic blew the whistle on that, so ian decided to coach his own squad in the north bay and the santa rosa ymca stepped up and donated facilities. >> i've played for 11 years now, and now i can. i'm starting to learn how to spin, kick and score, and i've done a couple of tournaments now and it's just it's really been a blast. >> karen washburn began playing after having a limb removed due to an accident over a decade ago. she says the game gives her a sense of belonging. >> the nice thing is it's a good activity for you to get together with other people that also are disabled and where you're not judged, you can have a lot of fun and you kind of feel more

like you're normal again, because you're getting to play a sport. >> ian's mother, naomi, is realistic but optimistic that local government can step up with resources in the future. >> we'll figure out ways to have the county and other programs support players that want to play, but don't have the capacity to show up regularly because they don't have transportation or they don't have aides. >> there is no doubt that the long term challenges ian and his teammates face are daunting. but for ian, introducing power soccer to more people with disabilities could be the key to overcoming them. >> playing soccer and helping, and, bringing in new players and teaching them how to be good, good players, good players, and even better people. >> two one phoenix. >> all right. >> in west sonoma county, i'm julian glover,

bay neighbors got together yesterday in santa clara. 40 niners quarterback brock purdy, along with george kittle and christian mccaffrey meeting up with the san jose earthquakes. this is going to be kind of a snug fit for the all pro tight end. but the quakes their players hernan lopez, christian espinosa, william yarbrough did jersey swaps and signed autographs. that's a wrap on morning sports. have a great weekend everybody. i'm larry beil. >> all right the a's the dodgers tonight 607 first pitch. lisa how's it looking. >> it looks pretty good stephanie. temperatures in the mid and upper 60s. so it's a mild day today in san francisco with a high of 70. and we're looking at warmer temperatures all around the bay area. this moisture that has been around the bay area is lifting to the north and east, but not before it leaves a few lightning strikes and more rain showers from the sierra nevada. some thunderstorms possibly, and then you can see up through northern california where the park fire is. hopefully the clouds will keep temperatures a bit cooler, but we certainly have some hot weather on the way today.

there's a look at the low clouds of fog that will keep the coast pretty cloudy. and that compressed marine layer. this morning, and temperatures are quite mild in spots with upper 60s in redwood city, 70 in san jose, 68. in hayward it is 59 downtown in the clouds, half moon bay 57. our exploratorium camera. lots of 70s inland, mid 60s from petaluma to napa and nearly 70 already in santa rosa. we'll be well into the 90s there today. there's a look at the fog. just a gorgeous view and we will warm up today downtown. but that sea breeze with us once again, the clouds at the coast over the weekend. today is the hotter days. sunday we cool off maybe 4 to 5 degrees. it's a quick warm up today and then next week the hottest day looks to be tuesday inland. wednesday is pretty toasty too though. here's a look at the low clouds, the fog, the upper level moisture that lifts out of the bay area throughout the day today. so still the risk of thunderstorms and then low clouds and fog quickly moving across the bay tonight all

across into the east bay. and then as it pulls back, we have those breezy winds and that slightly cooler day tomorrow as that humidity lifts on out. and that extra cloud cover. but still the risk of thunderstorms from extreme northeastern california through the sierra nevada throughout the day today, but getting less and less as we go through the afternoon. the chance that is 89 today in san jose, that's about six degrees warmer than yesterday, minus the humidity. it's going to feel hot out there. 94 in los gatos, 85 in milpitas on the peninsula, we are up to about 80 today. and in palo alto, at least six degrees warmer in redwood city, you get the afternoon sea breeze and you'll be in the low 70s south city up in the north bay. it's a hot one here with 99. in cloverdale, lakeport near that. and then as we get towards sonoma, temperatures in the mid 90s. so very warm on the bay shore here. we're 81 san leandro. so back to the low to mid 80s from union city and castro valley and inland. it is

a scorcher where we'll see 100 in pittsburg. but mid 90s pleasanton san ramon. that's a quick warm up and we'll see the temperatures come down a few degrees for your sunday. a generous marine layer to start the morning hours. not much change. maybe a couple degrees cooler on monday, but tuesday we're back to the heat inland and even wednesday is still toasty. stephanie >> all right, lisa, thank you. well, a new exhibit here in the bay area is helping to transport powerful messages from the native american community to people simply passing by on the street. abc seven's spencer christian found they cover a broad range of topics, including climate change. >> no matter you know where it is, everyone's ancestors goes back to the land ours happens to be here. >> they are the voices of indigenous peoples from the greater bay area and beyond. and more than echoing the past, they're laying claim to the

present and to their place in the tapestry. that's become california. >> absolutely. one of the main missions of this uh- project, uh, is bringing the voices forward. we are still here. >> we first met curtis bassendyne earlier this year when she unveiled an exhibit at san francisco's deyoung museum called contemporary indigenous voices of california's south coast range. it's a composite of photography and oral history. my native name is coyote woman in the chumash language. now, bassendyne has received a grant from san francisco's art commission to expand elements of the project into an outdoor poster display stretching down market street. >> so it just seemed really good to take it away out of a gallery situation and make it a street gallery. so it was really exciting to have it all across the opportunity of having it all across the market street. >> the posters are integrated into muni stops, where riders and passers by can experience them. the messages educate about

issues from native land rights to climate change, and they mirror the voices included in the original deyoung exhibit. >> for indigenous people, climate change is really the desecration and the depletion of our mother earth. >> karen aguirre is the chairwoman of the tamien nation, based in the south bay. >> i think it's important because it gives us visibility and lets people know that we're we're living indians. we're we continue to survive and thrive, we've always been here, but we walk among everybody else. >> the outdoor show is titled we are still here. the posters will be on display along market street between stewart and seventh streets for the people displayed, and for photographer keerti bassendyne, it will be a chance to reach new audiences, people who may never have the opportunity to view them in a formal exhibit. >> it just seemed like an amazing opportunity. how often do you see indigenous representation up on the main street? it's there. you know, in san francisco. >> spencer christian, abc
