current vice president kamala harris is fielding her final interviews and weighing her all important decision who the presumptive democratic nominee will choose as her running mate. and the answer is starting to take shape. good evening. i'm j.r. stone. we will get to those campaign clues coming from the harris camp tonight. but first we begin with the food festival letdown. this weekend in san francisco. the west coast taco and beer festival promised to be

a fun event. but as abc seven news reporter ryan curry tells us, attendees are upset and feeling ripped off. >> reporter it was no festival for these people as they waited in a long line that led to disappointment. >> it was probably like almost an hour in line. they literally have like one person checking tickets at the front door, which is like insane. they were like, i don't even know, like, oh, probably over a thousand people that were just like waiting in line. >> matt jenkins and his fiance willa bought two tickets for saturday's west coast taco and beer festival at the midway. each ticket was $50, and on it showed a list of all the things included. what they found was not even close to what they thought. >> tasting hours 2 to 5 includes taco and beer, slosh cider, slosh, seltzer tastings, custom festival, stadium cup to keep access to 30 plus food and drink vendors. not 30. >> how many would you say they were there? >> i mean like ten? >> ten? >> maybe now it has many people

questioning the structure of the event after the first 20 minutes, like all of the free options had already run out, but it's like no one even was able to get in by the time like that was offered. >> if that was the thing at all. >> the festival's instagram page shows enticing photos of previous events, but matt and willa say they deleted things from their page after the comments were full of angry festival goers. >> i was looking at their comments and it was people basically saying like, it's a scam, don't go and then when we left the event, like 30 minutes later or whatever, i looked again because i was going to. i just wanted to like, see if more people had commented. and then all the comments i saw before were gone. >> in a statement, blue stream entertainment, the organizing company, said we are as transparent as we possibly can be, and we understand the community's frustration with the long lines and limited tastings. we are currently working with our vendors to improve future events to make sure that we hold our mission statement true and improve the guest experience. matt and willa tried to get a refund, but couldn't find any customer service. >> i-team's them on instagram,

like explaining the situation and asking for a refund. haven't heard anything back, but there wasn't like an email or like contact us form or anything like that. so i don't know. >> the organizers have another event planned for san jose later this month. they told me they changed the format for that event. tickets include bottomless drink samples, but the food costs extra in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thanks so much. now to your voice and your vote. and tonight, vice president kamala harris is on the verge of selecting her running mate. she has no public events on her schedule tomorrow, indicating an announcement could be coming, a source tells abc news. harris met face to face with at least three leading contenders today. they were arizona senator mark kelly, minnesota governor tim walz and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. former attorney general eric holder also visited harris's residence at the naval observatory. holders law firm is running the vetting process.

vice president harris is expected to announce her running mate before they go on a campaign swing starting on tuesday. she will then make her way to san francisco after she finishes a campaign event on saturday. this weekend, president trump held a rally in the same atlanta arena. harris packed this week, both courting critical swing voters in georgia. >> she's acknowledged to be the worst vice president in the history of our country. >> this weekend, vice president harris reached enough democrat delegate support to become the party's presidential nominee. the democratic national convention in chicago starts two weeks from tomorrow, the start of the month of august is certainly living up to its nickname in san francisco, as we look out live from our abc seven roof camera tonight, this fog is going to give way to changes as we start the week. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is getting us ready

with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. okay j.r. well, the morning of august the 4th was certainly one that lived up to its name. >> here's a look at what was going on. you can see the circulation around this high pressure system over in the southwest. they're kicking moisture and clouds into our direction. so we started the day with lingering clouds that held for on quite a while. they finally thinned out in the afternoon, and even right now they haven't reestablished themselves. but we do expect the marine layer to rebuild overnight. so here's your day planner for tomorrow. early tomorrow morning, 7 a.m, the fog will be there with some coastal drizzle as well. temperatures ranging from 58 to 60 from bay to inland by noon. mostly sunny. temperatures ranging from low 70s near the bay to mid 80s inland, climbing up to low 90s inland by 4 p.m. and mid 70s around the bay shoreline. but by 7 p.m. look for partly cloudy skies with the marine layer rebuilding itself once again and temperatures will be dropping a bit, not so much inland, but near the bay and on the coast. it will be cooling down. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes.

j.r. >> spencer, thanks so much. looking forward to that. flames move fast today in the east bay threatening a contra costa county office building. a fire burned five acres near highway four and pacheco boulevard in martinez. this afternoon. time lapsed drone video shows the flames burning right up to the county assessor's building. firefighters got a handle on the fire before it could damage that building. you can see some of the images there and the burned out areas there. there were no evacuations or injuries. the san jose police department is in mourning tonight after the sudden death of a community service officer. flags are now at half staff outside police headquarters with a black ribbon across the badge outside the station. police say this is the first time a community service officer has died there in the line of duty. that unidentified officer and his partner were conducting traffic control at the scene of a crash on the monterey highway near palm avenue in south san jose saturday night. police say

another driver driving past the scene hit the two officers. that driver was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. the second cso was seriously hurt, but she is expected to be okay. >> we saw all the all the police cars and fire trucks and so we knew it was pretty bad. >> the unarmed csos respond lower priority calls and help direct traffic. san jose mayor matt mehan released a statement tonight expressing condolences. he says, quote, my prayers are with these two csos. their families and our entire police department in this devastating moment. and i assure you that this selfish, reckless act will not go unpunished. end quote. happening now. stocks in japan are plunging in response to disappointing data out of the u.s. once again, japan's benchmark stock index just dropped more than 12% to open

toward florida and getting stronger by the second. a live look now from miami, florida, where there is a flash flood warning in effect all night. the storm hit hurricane strength in the last three hours, supercharged by near record warm waters in the gulf of mexico. streets in florida are already swamped, and there's a whole lot more water on the way. the storm is expected to make landfall around midday tomorrow, bringing devastating rain to parts of florida, georgia and south carolina. some communities could see rain totals up to 2.5ft. >> that will be a generational storm that we've not seen. they're calling it a 500 to 1000 year storm. and so with that, we're extremely concerned about

flooding. >> governor gavin newsom's office says ten firefighters from california are deploying to georgia to help with search and rescue efforts. developing news in the uk tonight. after anti-immigration rioters attacked a hotel that has been used to house asylum seekers, ten police ended up hurt in what the prime minister called far right thuggery. james across the uk are dealing with these far right demonstrations. it all stems from a deadly stabbing attack at a dance class in britain last week. there were false claims that the teen suspect accused of killing the three little girls is an immigrant. he is not. but the disinformation hasn't stopped far right groups from fueling violence. >> this is not protest. it is organized violent thuggery, and

>> they have no land of their own and no sovereignty. unrecognized tribes also miss out on federal funding for everything from health care to housing and education. >> and we muwekma ohlone, along with other and recognized tribes throughout california, don't have access to educate our children for free, to uplift them from the generational trauma that we have faced. >> also at stake, the return of ancestral remains and sacred cultural objects which, by law requires federal agencies and museums to return, but without federal recognition, the tribe is at a loss, and we can't repatriate them because we're not on their list. >> their 1978 list of federally recognized tribes. >> there's never a better day than today to make it right, make that change, to bring that balance back, you know, to recognize the muwekma the way

they need to be. they should be recognized here on their native land. >> this tribe needs support. >> and some local governments are also getting behind the fight. san jose council member peter ortiz is planning to introduce a resolution to call on the federal government to fully recognize this tribe, to make sure that our government does right by the muwekma ohlone people. and he says he has a good number of colleagues ready to support it. and not just half recognition. >> they need all of our rights. it's not up to a colonial government to determine what rights uh- the original inhabitants of this, this country should have. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> a frightening plane crash started. a golfer startled a golfer that is, at a local golf course in sacramento. the plane had just taken off from mcclellan air force base. when authorities say the engine shut down at 400ft. and this is what you're seeing here, it went down over the hagan oaks golf course, bouncing off the practice green, and then skidding on its belly

towards the pro shop. a set of bleachers broke the impact and kept the fuselage from blowing into the shop. it was pretty crowded inside at the time. the pilot suffered a minor cut to his hand, but is otherwise okay. the faa is investigating what caused the airplane to plummet from the sky. intense images there. yeah, joined right now by spencer christian. boy, we see those images out of florida a much different situation here. >> yeah, yeah, much different. those storms of biblical proportions are not going to become a frequent occurrence anytime soon, but they will become less infrequent because of global warming and climate change. certainly a concern. we're fortunate we don't have that going on right now. here's a look at what's happening in the bay area and over all of california. basically, that high pressure system over the southwest continues to kick up some monsoonal moisture into our direction, but not quite the amount that we saw on friday and saturday as we had some dry lightning concerns. now, we had a very vigorous and lingering morning marine layer that held

on for half the day and brought us foggiest conditions that dissipated, but it will redevelop overnight and will be back by tomorrow morning. right now, though, we've got partly to mostly clear conditions at the coast and breezy conditions across the bay area, but no powerful gusts at the moment. it is, however, quite a bit cooler across most of the bay area than it was at this time last night, 13 degrees cooler in concord and 12 degrees cooler in livermore. so let's move along. take a live view from our rooftop camera across the embarcadero, 56 degrees right now in san francisco, 59, hayward 60, in oakland, low 60s at san jose and redwood city, 57 at half moon bay. and from emeryville, we have a view of quiet conditions 55 degrees in santa rosa right now, low 60s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. moving along one more live view from the exploratorium camera looking toward the bay bridge. these are our forecast headlines overnight and early tomorrow morning. fog and drizzle near the coast and bay by afternoon, we'll see sunnier and warmer conditions. sort of a typical summer pattern. and then on tuesday and wednesday we are going to have

quite a significant warm up with triple digit heat developing in our inland areas for that two day period. but for tonight, as we get into the overnight and early morning hours, we'll see the marine layer redeveloping, expanding across the bay and locally inland. there'll be lots of patchy drizzle near the coast and bay, as we have had for the last 4 or 5 overnight periods. and then as we get into the overnight lows, you can see that there will be, well, not exactly very cool, but cooler than they've been of late, mainly mid to upper 50s overnight. tomorrow's highs low 60s at the coast, mid 70s right around the bay shoreline. maybe a couple of upper 70s. there inland areas will be warm but not very hot and most locations inland will have highs in the low 90s. but there will be a couple of spots like fairfield and antioch may top out at about 94 degrees. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. and there's the heat on tuesday and wednesday. now it's very likely on tuesday that several inland locations will hit 100 degrees, possibly a little higher. a pretty good chance on wednesday also, although it will be just a little bit less hot on wednesday, both days are going

to be hot inland. then on thursday it starts to cool down across the board and as we get into friday, saturday and sunday, we'll see temperatures at a much cooler and more comfortable range with no extended periods of excessive heat in sight and certainly hoping for minimal winds at that time. exactly. yeah, because while it's hot like that and dr, any winds of course can add to fire concerns. so we'll be on

priceless? a bay area couple is among hundreds across the country using surrogates to have babies, and they are now caught in a financial nightmare. this couple counted on an escrow company to hold their money for the surrogates fees and medical expenses, but the company has shut down and their money is gone. allegations from court documents claim the owner of that escrow company used more than $10 million from parents hoping to have a baby to fund their lavish lifestyle. abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes has been working with abc news and our sister stations across the country on this report. and as he explains, it's affecting hundreds of people across the country and even overseas. >> alchemy. yeah, yeah, cindy b invited me into a room at kaiser santa rosa to see her husband and their daughter, mira, born just this past monday, using a surrogate who happens to be a nurse at the hospital they call little mira their miracle baby.

>> so thankful to our surrogate and her family. and we want to you know, be in each other's life forever. >> ten years ago, cindy was working hard in tech and hadn't met the right person, so she froze her eggs a step. she calls liberating after she met jorge iglesias, who works at a startup, they decided to have a child using a surrogate. they placed $60,000 into an escrow account that would pay the surrogates fees and medical expenses. >> escrow accounts was the easiest part in my mind that that should be the least of our worries. >> when you have to think about who's going to carry your baby for nine months, how do you develop that trust, or how do you get to pick someone that should be the hardest part, and in this case, it's the opposite. >> they use an escrow company out of houston, run by a woman who identified herself as a former surrogate, dominique side. >> i'm the owner of surrogacy escrow account management, better known as seam seam slogan will handle the money you handle. >> what matters. in court

filings, dominique side is accused of using hundreds of her clients money in a fraudulent way to fund a lavish lifestyle as a vegan influencer, i'm the messy type, but i can make you eat up as a rap artist and r&b singer, pouring more than $6 million into this recording facility called vegan bay studios, and more of her clients money into real estate holdings, a vegan market in houston and a clothing line. she made several appearances on social media. as a serial entrepreneur, it's like we rent cars, we have investment properties, >> we do publishing for music and, yeah, there's a lot going on here. >> the first sign of trouble for cindy and george was just last month, and then our surrogate got paid for me, and then for june, there was no payment. cindy immediately contacted seem and got this form, emailed back. >> the following message is a

public statement released by sole owner dominique. >> side side's message is also now on the company's answering machine. >> my company and i have been noticed that we are subject to an active investigation by federal authorities under advice of counsel. i am not permitted to respond to any inquiries regarding the investigation. >> the fbi's houston division is trying to identify potential victims, asking them to fill out this online survey. did you wire money? what is the total amount? how much are you owed? >> and they were used for dominique's own life to fund her lifestyle, to fund her businesses, to grow her businesses, and essentially to hide it from all of the intended families. >> attorney marianne robach represents some three dozen former seem clients in this hearing. two weeks ago, robach was able to freeze dominique side's assets. in her court filing, robach cites a facebook group called seam breach, which includes more than 600 families with more than $10 million in escrow funds that appear to have

vanished. neither dominique side nor representative attended the hearing, but her music business partner and gospel singer anthony hall testified that side reported herself to the fbi. >> what did she tell you she had done? >> that there was some mismanagement uh- of funds? >> abc news and our sister stations across the country have been documenting how this case is growing. interviewing couple after couple who say they've lost money given to the escrow company for safekeeping. >> there just isn't the kind of regulation that we need to keep everyone safe from new york to north carolina. >> she should never be able to impact people like this. >> what are our next steps? what are we going to do? like where do we go from here from atlanta to boise, idaho? >> how does someone take advantage of a community that is already so vulnerable, so emotionally, financially stretched already, like it's sick? >> despite our combined efforts, we've been unable to reach

dominique's side. our reporter went to one of her properties in new orleans and spoke with syed's mother. >> i mean, i know my daughter. i know how type of person she is, and i know she wouldn't intentionally do anything to hurt anybody. >> one other note about 40 french couples are also caught up in this controversy because surrogacy is illegal there. i met olivier lentes and didier larnach in manteca, where they had a son by surrogate on july 3rd. >> i know that he was the most precious thing that could happen in my life, and i saw him for the first time and i began to say, they're staying at an airbnb until they can get a passport for little lucas, the history teacher and private nurse put $120,000 into a seam escrow account and say they've lost $60,000 of it. i just want to have justice to be done for us and for everybody. >> what does justice look like for you? >> she have to get back the money to as possible to everybody and i think she could

vegas and on wednesday. what's behind the tradwife controversy? trending on social media? that's coming up this weekend, 1:00 pm right here on abc seven in the east bay. >> this weekend, people had an extra spring in their step at alameda point. that's where the big bounce america tour made another bay area stop bringing with it the world's largest bounce house. organizers have inflated seven different inflatable attractions, including one that's 24,000ft■!. this year's tour is bigger than last year's, when it paid a visit to the golden gate fields parking lot. tickets are on sale now. they start at 22 bucks for toddlers. adults are $45. the attraction is open through next sunday. it was a milestone weekend for the fremont festival of the arts. tens of thousands of people flocked to paseo padre parkway yesterday and today for the 40th annual gathering. train

rides, rock climbing and arts and crafts were a few of the many activities. the festival is put on by the fremont chamber of commerce, which is a nonprofit. an army of 800 volunteers helped put on the show, and they got everything for everybody here for kids to adults, and it's just a great time. >> but every year it gets busier and busier. >> so proceeds raised help local programs, local after school programs, medical research, and it helps them fund scholarships. a lucky attendee at the orange county fair is now $1 million richer. they hit the jackpot on a $10 lottery scratcher ticket. county fair officials said it happened at one of the fair's booths last sunday. the winner hasn't been officially verified yet, although california lottery officials say many people claiming to be the winner have called in. did we win? >> spencer uh- no, i don't think we did. >> with a prize that size, law enforcement agents call and

questioned them about the odds of winning, the odds of hitting the full jackpot for the scratchers game was 1 in 1 point 2 million. joined by spencer christian. and like you said, i don't think we won. no, no. >> well, those are long odds, right? >> but that's okay because we've got each other. >> well, yeah, exactly. and i have a winning forecast. oh, how about that. so here's a look at what's coming our way. we'll start with the overnight satellite radar satellite radar. the overnight radar futurecast showing the development. the redevelopment of the marine layer along with some coastal drizzle which will actually move onshore a little bit around the bay and along the coastline during the early morning hours. overnight low temperatures in the early morning hours will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. then in the afternoon we'll see sunshine just about everywhere except along the coastline. afternoon high temperatures will range from low 60s at the coast to low and mid 70s around the bay shoreline to mainly low 90s inland, although 1 or 2 locations may hit midnight tomorrow. here's the accuweather seven day forecast and there

to host the jets in their week one opener monday, september 9th. see it right here on abc seven. brock purdy enters as the unquestioned starting quarterback fresh off a super bowl appearance last season, but the backup quarterback position very much up for grabs. and for one signal caller, he's hoping the sky is the limit for what he can do in a 40 niners uniform. 40 niners quarterback josh dobbs has his sights set on winning the backup quarterback position. it was a wild season for him last year. in 2023, he began in cleveland's camp was the eventual week one starter for arizona and then had a midseason trade to minnesota. >> it was definitely was a crazy experience, but i enjoyed every aspect of it. like i enjoyed the opportunity to go out, compete, put my best foot forward every single week and get that opportunity to lead from the

front. ideally, don't want to go through another crazy season such as that in less than a full calendar year. >> josh is learning his fourth nfl playbook here in san francisco. play calls can get long, but thanks to his interest in aerospace engineering and a nasa internship, he's taking it in stride. >> there's actually a lot of crossover that talk to faa. they say a call, you got to repeat it back to them very specifically. got a lot of stuff going on. it's just like you're saying the pocket you got to call out one of coach coach, coach shanahan's plays. they get real wordy in there. so it's been good crossover between the two. >> dobbs says he's currently working on his private pilot's license and has about 35 of his 40 hours complete. but for now, his main focus is on football and rocketing to the top of the quarterback depth chart to be brock purdy's backup qb. 40 niners opened the preseason saturday in nashville. all right, the giants tyler fitzgerald was named the national league rookie of the month for july, has showed no signs of slowing down here in august. two more homers this month means he now has ten home runs in his last 16 games, which
