just ahead. >> george: there's also breaking news on the economy. a selloff in global markets after a new jobs report sparked fears of a recession even as inflation is easing up. rebecca jarvis will explain what's going on. >> robin: we're going to begin with hurricane debby making landfall just moments ago. it could bring historic rain and flooding as it stalls over several states along the atlantic coast. our team tracking everything from the path to evacuations and chaos for travellers. ginger starts us off in madeira beach, florida. good morning to you, ginger. >> ginger: good morning, robin. we have been getting crushed from these waves from the gulf of mexico. just rolling up and over the parking lot here at one of these beaches covered in water. the coastal flooding a huge deal. we also want to tell you that there's a storm that just made landfall right there in the big bend. there's a much broader impact so tornado watches go up to savannah with whipping wind, hurricane warnings up to augusta georgia.

this is day one of an entire that we'll be talking about potentially historic debby. >> hurricane going on outside. >> ginger: this morning hurricane debby tearing into the big bend of florida's gulf coast as a category 1 hurricane. life threating storm surge and inundating rain near the eye. michael paluska is in cross city. >> this is cross city in dixie county. we're about 20 miles from the coast. we are now in the eye wall of hurricane debby. we're just now starting to see this finally come in from the southeast with all the bands and stinging rain. >> ginger: was even those outer bands dropping up to 10 inches of rain already and pushing water up the coast. cars in clearwater submerged. in ft. meyers beach, the streets swallowed as far as the eye can see.

the flooding barrelling into buildings. officers driving through and firefighters wading in to make a water rescue. and a stunning rescue off the coast of boca grande as debby passed by. air crews rescued two boaters missing since saturday. florida, georgia, south carolina all now in a state of emergency, as debby will barely crawl through the southeast. with max sustained winds of 80 miles an hour, storm surge is still the immediate threat and taking on water here on the south side of florida all day. i want to show you 6 to 10 feet still possible. let's move on to what will be the biggest story throughout the week. that is the slow progression of this storm. that's why you see that path broaden out and almost just sit there making a circle all the way through saturday morning, as it becomes a depression or low again. so we'll time it out. savannah tonight through tomorrow morning. you stick with those bands all the way through 1:30 a.m.

the on shore flow in charleston could be devastating. coastal floods where you push the water towards the coast, 10 to 20 inches of rain, you will have history making flooding. we could easily see numbers surpassed in georgia or south carolina. we could see up to 30 inches locally. michael, we'll be talking about this one ault week and it will be moving up the coast with us. >> michael: we know you got it covered. thanks so much for that. we're going to faith abubey with hurricane debby has already brought a lot of rain and more to come. good morning, faith. >> reporter: to you, michael. you can see there are dozens of bucket trucks here. they are ready to respond to power outages as soon as they can. right now there are more than 200,000 customers across the state of florida who have lost power because of the storm. debby has been whipping the northwestern part of the state now for several hours. it's expected to get worse throughout the day. now, the ground is already saturated here so the deluge of

water that this storm is expected to dump in this area can create concern. the concern for flash flooding and just flooding in general, significant flooding, life threatening flooding is growing. the risk is not just here in florida. we're talking parts of north carolina, parts of south carolina and georgia as well. here in florida, there are already evacuation orders in place for people in place in low lying flood prone areas. we saw homeowners yesterday going to public shelters. the governor said there are about 3,000 national guardsmen who are ready to respond as soon as they can. their search and rescue teams are staged across the state as well. the governor's really impressing upon the residents here that once the storm is out, the risk is not over. they want people to take precautions even after debby is gone. george? >> george: i'm sure they do. faith, thanks very much. thousands of flights have already been delayed or cancelled. many cruise ships are rerouting. trevor ault is at newark airport. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning,

george. so this is a mess already. we're at about 800 flights cancelled and that number is going to keep rising especially when you pair hurricane debby with storm systems in the midwest and northeast. just yesterday alone there were more than 2,400 flights cancelled. this went up and down the eastern seaboard. miami up to charlotte, new york city. even as far as dallas they saw a ton of cancellations and delay. now we're expecting that to continue to get worse as the storm system comes in. lot of cruise liners had to move up or move back their departure. even the port of tampa had to outright shut down. if you are planning on traveling really anywhere. we know about the ripple effects between airports. it is a great idea to have a plan b for your travel. robin? >> robin: safe travels for all. trevor, thank you.

now the stock market. opening this morning after a rough finish last week. the dow fell more than 600.sfriday on a weaker than expected jobs report. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here with more. good morning to you, rebecca. >> rebecca: good morning, robin. markets around the globe selling off. overnight, japan's nikkei plunged 12% its worst day since the black monday crash. that was in 1987. here investors are responding to that friday jobs market report on the jobs market showing that employers added just 114,000 jobs in july, and that was well below the 185,000 forecast. the unemployment rate jumped to 4.3%, which is still very low, but it shows joblessness has increased more than half a percent since january. that's something that just doesn't usually happen in a healthy economy. a rise like that is historically a sign that a recession is imminent. now, on wall street, they've

said the tech heavy nasdaq has been the hardest hit, down more than 10% from its record high on july 10th. you put all of this together and it signals that a rate cut is coming likely in september, or even earlier. this fed has been tried to balance the fact that we have seen this higher interest, higher interest rates, higher inflation, along with trying to cool the economy off without creating an all out recession. george, this is an international phenomenon. this is something where around the world they are dealing with inflation. >> george: they sure are. thanks, rebecca. now the race for the white house. vice president harris met with three potential candidates sunday. expected to make her decision by tomorrow. want to go to our white house correspondent selina wang. good morning, selina. >> reporter: good morning. vice president harris today set to formally secure the democratic nomination. from there she'll shake up this race once again. any moment she's expected to announce her new running mate. this morning vice president

jobs report. rebecca will be back with the answers for us. that's all coming up, robin. >> robin: but, michael, more on our top story. hurricane debby has made landfall in florida. let's go back to ginger who is there in the storm zone. good morning, ginger. >> ginger: robin, good morning to you. we are just getting whipped by some of those outer bands in the gulf of mexico here with all that energy, still coming at us as it's whipping in and pushing towards the coast. this will happen throughout the day today. look at this video from just when it made landfall, or kwruft before. this is taylor county, florida. we've hit a power flash. we've seen 175,000 customers without power. that number will grow. this thing has a lot of wind with it. that's not going to be the lasting effect of debby. it will be about the potentially historic flooding. let's talk about the immediate impact. it just made landfall, twirling through that big bend in florida. the outer bands down to tampa bay, tornado watch up to savannah, georgia. the timing is the most important part.

the reason we could see historic flooding is because, unlike some storms that pass on by and move through, we've got flash flood and storm alerts because this thing will stick around for days. tuesday's warning. savannah taking on the brunt of what's left of the eye wall of the on shore flow. charleston getting the on shore flow. charleston doesn't stop getting the on shore flow. hilton head, north charleston going to be a problem wednesday into thursday. that's putting up this potentially historic flood risk for so much of southeast georgia. we're talking rain. 10-20 inches widespread and up to 30 inches for some. up near richmond, virginia, you even have an elevated flash flood risk. we'll be covering it all week. >> michael: thank you very much. now a confession from robert f. kennedy jr. that he once left a dead bear cub in new york's central park. jon karl is in washington, d.c. with more. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the 2024 presidential campaign has already been filled with

strange and unpredictable twists and turns. but this may be the strangest twist yet. a decade ago a central park mystery baffled new yorkers. >> we saw something on the back wheel that could have been a raccoon. >> reporter: captured headlines across the country. >> police now want to know how the bear died and how it got into the park. >> reporter: now we know. robert f. kennedy jr., the independent presidential candidate, said he brought the dead bear to central park. >> i pulled over and i picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van because i was going to skin the bear. >> reporter: he confesses he left the bear right there beside an old bicycle beside a central park bike path because he thought it would be, quote, amusing. in the videotaped confession, kennedy recounts the strange tale to controversial comedienne roseanne barr and says he's talking about it now because a fact checker for the new yorker

told him the magazine plans to publish an article that details kennedy's role in bringing the dead bear to central park. anyway, kennedy recounts how he saw a woman hit the bear with her car on a highway in upstate new york. he says he picked up the dead cub intending to skin it and store the flesh in his refrigerator. after a day of hunting he had to run to a steak dinner. then he had to go to the airport. >> i wasn't drinking of course, but people were drinking, and they thought this was a good idea. i said let's go put the bear in central park and we'll make it look like he was hit by a bike. >> reporter: in the new video, he says he was shocked to discover how much attention the discovery of the dead bear with the bicycle got the next day. >> i was worried because my

prints were all over that bike. [ laughter ] >> reporter: it's not the only bizarre story to come out during the kennedy campaign. earlier this year it was revealed that he once testified that a worm, quote, got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died. that was back in 2012. at one point kennedy was in double digits in the polls. >> don't you want something different? >> reporter: he's now dropped to about 6% in the 538 polling average. but his campaign claims his name will be on the ballot in at least 42 states. that's not enough to win, but it could be enough to play a decisive role in determining who does. the new yorker has now published its article. it's a long profile of kennedy that includes just a couple of paragraphs about the dead bear in central park. the magazine asked him about a photograph that shows kennedy posing with the bear cub his fingers inside its bloody mouth.

phone calls about this, but how would you describe your role in that whole episode? >> i have the greatest respect for the president. i think he will be one of the most consequential presidents in our country. i want him, his legacy, to be recognized, preserved. it's our legacy, too, in the congress. we worked together for a great agenda for working families, for kitchen table issues for america's working families. i wanted that to be recognized. and he was the one who could recognize it the most. we just wanted him to make the decision how we best preserve that legacy and also -- >> george: the only way to do that was for him to step down. >> that would be up for him to decide. it was always about him. why i said i'd make calls because people said i was burning up the air waves. no i wasn't.

i'm gonna tell you, it doesn't matter what the wind speeds are, the storm will be about the other impacts started with the outer bands with the spinoff tornados. up through savannah georgia we have a tornado watch until 4 p.m. this track is critical. see how it very slowly makes its way off the coast and hangs out near charleston. when you've got tpha that push of off shore flow, you're plugging up the exit. look at the timing. savannah has that plug up, plus heavy bands of rain through tuesday. charleston all the way through tuesday, wednesday, even thursday. we're talking about a widespread 10 to 20 inches of rain upwards of 30 inches. if the state of south carolina gets more than 23.6 inches that would set an all time record for one storm. george? >> george: thank you very much. let's go back to faith abubey with more on the flooding threat. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning, george. there are literally dozens of

bucket trucks ready to respond to power outages once the storm moves through and it's safe to do so. right now there are more than 12,000 customers in florida without power. debby has been whipping this portion of the state for several hours. conditions are expected to get worse, dumping a lot of rain, significant amount of rain in this area. of course, there are concerns for life threatening flash flooding, catastrophic flooding in homes. so there are evacuation orders in place for homeowners. lot of them across the state were able to go to public shelters yesterday. but the governor says they have enough resources to respond to life threatening conditions if they were to pop up. at this point though, he's still urging people to sit tight, finalize those emergency plans and also continue to take precautions even after debbie moves through. michael? >> michael: definitely take that advice. faith, thank you very much. hurricane debby is causing

travel problem. thousands of flights have already been cancelled or delayed, and many cruise ships are rerouting. let's go back to trevor ault at newark airport. hey, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. we're watching this travel mess grow in real time. just in the hour since i first talked to you, there's been 125 new flight cancellations. that's gonna get worse throughout the day. yesterday alone there were more than 2,400 flights cancelled across the country, 9,500 flights delayed which is huge especially from miami all the way up to new york. even as far as dallas, they were really impacted, too. even if you're not in the storm zone, there's also storm systems moving through the midwest and northeast. all of these airports are connected. even having a severe impact in one reason, it's going to have an impact somewhere else. if you're traveling you've got to have a plan b. >> robin: that ripple effect. you got that right, trevor. thank you very much. now an urgent plea for blood donations. the american red cross said supplies are critically low. rhiannon ally is here with

details. >> good morning, robin. let's put this into perspective. the red cross said it provides about 40% of the nation's blood supply. it's calling this shortedage an emergency and breaking record breaking heat across the country. the red cross said supplies are down 25% just since july 1st. that's a short fall of more than 17,000 donations. it says extreme heat coast to coast has impacted almost 100 blood drives in nearly every state. it may get even worse as the hurricane season reaches its peak. tropical weather may also threaten the supply. it says hospitals are dangerously low and type o stock and shipments of blood to hospitals are far outpacing donations. so the red cross is putting out this urgent plea for dough nations asking americans to give. they are even offering an amazon gift card if you donate by the end of this month. >> robin: they really need everyone's help who can do that.

new fears of a recession even as inflation is easing up. rebecca jarvis is here to take on the questions. let's start with what happened. jobs report comes out friday. huge selloff wall street cascades over the weekend. what's going on? >> rebecca: you bring up an important point. it is around the world. there is this disappointing jobs report. there are recession fears. one of the big trades that has propelled the stock market higher, ai. it's the tech trade. those are some of the stocks that have been hit the heaviest. now we are seeing it be international. you have what's happened overnight in japan. that's all playing together to drive stocks lower here. >> george: we're seeing inflation easing but a lot of people still having a hard time making ends meet. >> rebecca: inflation has eased up by a significant amount. when you look back at where prices were three years ago they've come up a lot. the typical family is still spending about $1,000 a month more on the same services they were a year ago. even if you factor in the increase in wages.

it doesn't feel like they are getting ahead in that regard. you have all what the fed has done to fight inflation. they have been increasing rates. that's why a mortgage is more expensive. that can disproportionately impact lower earners because people are more dependent on their credit cards. also those pandemic era savings. people sat on their hands for of the pandemic. they saved a lot of money. that's gone. then there's the fomo yolo economy. people literally, george, see it on social media, feel like they have to spend money. they do and are now in credit card debt. >> george: we are almost certain to see rate cuts september, maybe earlier. what does that mean? >> rebecca: it's good news if you are carrying a large amount of credit card debt. in fact, people are taking on more credit card debt. the average household has more than $7,000. if you go back to 2021 when the apr on average was 15%, that would cost you $90 in interest. at today's rates it $126.

week. >> the cool thing about track is that everybody has the same opportunity so it's not about age. he has the heart of a champion. he's a competitor. he wants to put on the colors for team usa and represent. >> michael: that dream coming true just this past june. >> i was playing a video game and i got a call. i was jumping up and down. i was screaming around the house. everything a normal 16-year-old kid would do. after that i jumped right back on the video game. >> michael: his parents roy and monique, beaming with pride. >> all his hard work, dedication, is paying off. >> to be able to watch your child wake up one day and meet their dreams in real life, it's amazing. it's what every parent wants. >> michael: quincy doing just that, documenting this dream come true on social media. >> first time going out of the country so i don't know what to expect. that's the thing that i'm most nervous about. i have been practicing for this moment. i didn't know that i would be
