chooses who she will have join her on the ticket. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is following that part of the story. and joins us with the latest jor dan. >> i'ma put your seat belt on because the race for president is about to intensify. for the last two weeks it's been harris versus trump and vance. but we've learned that a final pick for her running mate is nearly in. all eyes are now on vice president kamala harris, who is set to announce her running mate on tuesday. the three possible picks getting all the attention arizona senator mark kelly, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro and minnesota governor tim walz. >> i got no inside track in terms of who she's going to choose, even california senator laphonza butler, who we spoke with on abc seven news at 3 p.m, said this pick is solely being made by harris. but i do, know for sure that the vice president thinks about the people of this country first. and foremost. and

so she's looking for governing partner who's going to share that priority. >> a thought echoed by nancy pelosi on good morning america. >> not just about who can help win, but who can help serve and lead, and whose competence she trusts. she has confidence in and trust. >> when pressed on walls, shapiro and kelly during her cnn afternoon appearance, pelosi said this tim walz is wonderful. >> he was chair of our veterans affairs committee, the governor of pennsylvania is remarkable and a real star. and i understand mark kelly may still be in the running from what mj said, but as she said, it's a question of who she feels the most comfort level with in terms of governance. >> while governance is important. professors we spoke with believe there is quite a bit to who can best help harris win. >> kamala harris is looking to see which one of these candidates will help. either get

people who are going to stay home to the polls, or get those wobbler voters who weren't sure who to vote for put them in her column. >> harris has spent the weekend interviewing candidates. it's likely she'll announce her pick tuesday, just as she goes on the offensive with rallies scheduled this week in battleground states including pennsylvania, wisconsin, michigan, north carolina, arizona and ending in that in nevada. that is on saturday. and after that, she plans to head back to san francisco. dan ama, now, back to you. >> all right. as you said, jor. buckle up. it's going to get very interesting from here on out. thanks very much, jerry. well, happening tomorrow a critical vote could change how drivers navigate san francisco roads. the sfmta board of directors is considering a plan that would give them the option to ban right turns at red lights anywhere in the city. most intersections downtown are already becoming no turn on red. under a plan passed earlier in the year, the new proposal would allow the city to expand that to
11:04 pm
other areas. they'll be focused on intersections with a lot of foot traffic and a history of crashes. people we spoke with on the streets today have mixed opinions. >> it helps keep things a little more distinct as to who gets to move when it's the worst thing, it will impede the flow of traffic. >> the sfmta says priority areas for the expansion could be parts of the mission and nob hill. they're currently installing these no right on red signs in downtown areas. first both north and south of market. >> we are continuing to bring you stories on the effort to solve the homelessness crisis. as part of our work to build a better bay area. as we've been reporting, these sweeps are san francisco's attempt to move unhoused people off the streets. but tonight, we're getting an up close look at how the city is getting that process done. and the approach seems to depend on which department is running the sweep. the city's encampment resolution team is conducting sweeps with advance notice to

people on the streets and bringing in social workers as they clear camps at the same time, sfpd is doing its own operations with help from the public works department, the police operations don't include social service support for people being moved, but officers are supposed to offer resources. >> we're going to the afternoons now, early evenings, places where there are smaller encampments and where there have been encampments before trying to keep people from camping in those areas. >> all this is in line with mayor london breed's announcement last week. the mayor told us sfpd's policies will be modified based on effectiveness. homeless advocates are pushing back on the city's approach, calling it inhumane. last week, multiple organizations signed on to a letter to mayor breed, the city attorney and governor newsom demanding an end to the sweeps. for all of our reporting around the homelessness crisis, including expert analysis and how we got here, head to our website, abc seven news.com or your abc seven news app. >> all right. let's move now to tonight's abc seven news deep

dive at 11. it's designed to give you some useful, helpful perspective on issues that deserve a deeper look. and tonight it's all about what's going on with the global financial markets. nervous time. right now we're seeing a major rebound in the japanese stock market after it first set up this historic day of losses tonight on the tuesday market, opening a japan's benchmark index is up more than 9%, coming close to making up for yesterday's historic plunge. contrary to the celebration you see at the closing bell, wall street took a beating. today. the dow and s&p both saw their worst percentage drops in nearly two years, and it was a rough day for the nasdaq as well. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here with us with more on what's causing this. and tim, how you should prepare for what's next. it can be very anxious. >> anxious indeed. dan, there's really no way around it other than to say it was a brutal day

for the stock market today. all major indexes took pretty big losses. as you mentioned, there, as fears over an economic downturn grow. but experts say a recession isn't necessarily a done deal. and they think a lot of this is just a correction from asia to europe to the us. on monday, stock markets around the world tumbled, with some, like the japanese nikkei having their worst day since 1987. while the losses were widespread, tech stocks were especially hard hit, including companies like apple, amazon, nvidia and meta. >> a lot of these companies, the magnificent seven and companies beyond that, they're spending a lot of money on artificial intelligence. but the payoff is a little bit further down the road. >> the selloff was caused by a myriad of factors, says economist julia pollack. pollack says some of those factors include weaker earnings over the past few weeks, the expectation that the federal reserve will begin to quickly cut interest rates, as well as the lackluster jobs report on friday. >> the private sector, excluding health care and social assistance, added only 33,000
11:08 pm
jobs in this last report and that is well below the 137,000 average between 2015 and 2019. >> despite a rising unemployment rate, pollack says joblessness remains historically low at close to 4%. she thinks despite the panic on wall street monday, the economy will not enter a recession in the near future. pollack attributes much of the slowdown to the fact that the economy soared following the pandemic, with decades high gdp and inflation growth. >> as a result, normalization has looked like a pretty steep drop, but from unsustainable heights. >> those views were also shared by bree mason, a bay area based financial adviser. >> don't panic. stay calm. investing is long term, mason says. >> it's important to remember that stock market fluctuations are cyclical and that overall, the market is still up since the start of the year. and for anyone concerned about their own financial well-being, mason cautions against making any dramatic moves people need to know that there are ups and downs and understanding their
