who are the finalists? >> all right, well, i will break those down for you, reggie harris met with three finalists over the weekend, and we're now learning in the past few minutes that she has made a final decision. so here are the three finalists. arizona senator mark kelly, the retired astronaut married to shooting survivor gabby giffords. first term governor josh shapiro of the must win state of pennsylvania, and minnesota governor tim walz, a retired school teacher and former six term congressman. california senator laphonza butler, who we spoke with on abc seven news at 3 p.m, said this pick is solely being made by harris. >> kamala harris is looking to see which one of these candidates will help. either get people who are going to stay home to the polls, or get those wobbler voters who weren't sure who to vote for put them in her column. >> the new democratic presidential ticket will spend the next several days crisscrossing the country, starting with pennsylvania tonight, and then to michigan, wisconsin and north carolina. she will then make her way to

around 1 to 2%. this comes after a major rebound in the japanese stock market after it first set up a historic day of losses. japan's benchmark index closed tuesday, up more than 9%. that came close to making up for monday's historic plunge here in the u.s. yesterday, the dow and s&p both saw their worst percentage drop in nearly two years, and it was a rough day for the nasdaq as well. economist julia pollak says several factors caused the selloff. that includes weaker earnings over the past few weeks, the expectation that the fed will start to quickly cut interest rates, and a lackluster jobs report on friday. >> the private sector, excluding health care and social assistance, added only 33,000 jobs in this last report and that is well below the 137,000 average between 2015 and 2019. >> and despite a rising unemployment rate, joblessness remains historically low at close to 4%. even with the panic on wall street yesterday,

people told us they were scammed when the event wasn't all it was hyped up to be. abc seven news has learned this isn't the first failed event by organizers. back in 2019, seven on your side found a similar taco festival in san jose that had the same issues. the company behind these events now has another upcoming festival planned in san jose for the end of the month. the company says they are lowering the entry price and promising bottomless beer samples, but now are charging extra for food. in a statement, ceo brandon mosley told us, quote, based on the community's feedback, we are accepting refund requests to guests who did not have the experience that we wanted to create. >> new developments in the fate of the oakland coliseum. the oakland a's have officially come to a deal to sell its portion of the site. the team and the african american sports and entertainment group made that announcement yesterday. the organization will buy the team's portion of the stadium site for $125 million. last week, this same group bought the city's

half for $105 million. they plan to turn it into a housing and entertainment hub. >> this unlocks the opportunity to actually move development, forward sooner. you know obviously you know this site has had an undivided interest for so long and hasn't been owned by one entity since its existence. >> in a statement, the team said it's pleased to have reached this deal that can help provide substantial opportunities and benefits for oakland. the a's will temporarily move to sacramento for next season ahead of a planned relocation to las vegas. >> 609 this morning, we'll get the latest on tropical storm debbie. it is crawling right now. the latest winds 45mph. get used to this picture because debbie's pretty much going to sit in the same area over the next couple of days. look at the track from today until about thursday night. it just slowly moves its way around charleston. we'll see a lot of rain in a short amount of time. could be

harris is set to pick minnesota governor tim walz as her running mate. there he is right there. two term governor. governor of minnesota. want to go straight to selina wang, who is there in philadelphia. and selina walz appears to fit the all american definition of a man from middle middle america. high school teacher, teacher, football coach, member of the army national guard before becoming a member of congress and now governor. >> exactly. he really has that perfect back story. he also has those rural roots, and he's really emerged as the dark horse in this veepstakes race. he has emerged as the favorite very recently as he has been on the cables on the network, showing that he can effectively push back on those republican attack. he's the one, george, remember, who labeled j.d. vance and his republican allies as, quote, weird, which gained a lot of steam with the harris campaign. he has this folksy, personal, informal vibe that is really appealed to a lot of democrats. and they believe that his rural backstory, the fact that he was a former member of the nra, as

you say, he is this high school former high school teacher. he was a football coach, that this can help a appeal to those independent swing state voters. but it is unprecedented, george, how all of this has played out. i was told that as of last night, according to sources, vice president harris still had not made her decision and that her team was printing out signs with multiple different candidates on it ready to go at any moment. this decision coming down to the wire, her and her close team have been keeping this decision under lock and key. they wanted to avoid any leaks. >> and let me bring in jon karl, our chief washington correspondent. we know that the vice president met with with three finalists on sunday, not only governor waltz, but also governor josh shapiro of pennsylvania, senator mark kelly of arizona. >> yeah, all three had strong arguments to make to be her running mate. all three under serious consideration until the ry end. tim walz came through as somebody that frankly, kamala harris was comfortable with. she

actually had known, josh shapiro much longer. the two of them both former attorneys general she had known had a longer relationship with him. but people that i've spoken to said she really hit it off with with tim walz, both of them coming from states that are important, pennsylvania, perhaps the most important battleground state. but minnesota, a state that democrats, won last time and were counting on winning again. but where donald trump had shown strength and more importantly, it's that whole area minnesota, wisconsin, michigan. the feeling was having a midwest governor who had governed in a state that that that that has significant pockets of republican voters would be good for her. and if you look at his experience in congress, george, you know, he's a six term member of the house before he ran for governor, his

district is a district that donald trump carried quite handedly, a pretty conservative district. and as a member of congress, he was viewed as a as a moderate democrat. now he is seen certainly among these three finalists as the most progressive, the most liberal politically of the three finalists. but he does, you know, have a record in congress as as a rather moderate democrat representing a very moderate to conservative district in minnesota. >> and let me bring in mary bruce, our chief white house correspondent. mary, that personal chemistry, obviously paramount in the final decision. but in the last couple of weeks, tim walz also had been performing very well on the stump and a performing very well on the stump. and a lot of democrats believe he lines up well with former president trump's running mate, j.d. vance. >> yeah, certainly, george, his midwestern appeal that plainspoken way of talking that he has, he's a bit folksy, and i think that certainly appeals to a lot of voters, especially perhaps some some joe biden

supporters. he clearly showed that kamala harris believes that he is able to get out there on the stump. clearly articulate the case against donald trump. and he was creating a lot of buzz, as salena said, he coined that, that, that, that one word takedown of the trump vance team just calling them weird. that is something that really gained a fair amount of traction and so much of this decision, while yes, it is about, you know, who can put what states in play, you know, looking at the map, looking ahead to the future, it is also a decision that is simply about chemistry, camaraderie, compatibility. this is a job, of course, that kamala harris knows better than anyone else. and clearly, when it came down to it, she believes that she and tim walz make a good team here, that they are going to be able to not just govern well, but also win. all of these things factor into this decision. and of course, this is the most consequential decision of her career and one that she has had to make at absolute warp speed. just 16 days, george. 16 days. that's how long she has

had to get used to being a candidate and to making this huge decision. and despite all of the decision making, all of the vetting, when it comes down to it, this decision was up to kamala harris alone, no question about that. >> let's bring in rachel scott with the first reaction from the trump campaign. rachel >> yeah, we're just getting word in from donald trump's campaign and also from the former president and his allies saying, quote, even worse than dangerously liberal and crooked kamala harris. that's the reaction to this news that we are now reporting that harris is picking governor tim walz to be her running mate. just yesterday, george, the former president donald trump, was saying quite the opposite. in fact, he during an interview, he said that whoever harris chooses to be, her running mate would be better than her. we know that the trump campaign for days now has really been trying to recalibrate their focus, trying to figure out what exactly their strategy is, because they wanted to run against president joe biden. once president joe biden dropped out of the race, they now have tried to figure out what their new line of attack is not only on vice president kamala harris, but also now on

someone who is going to be her running mate. when president biden was still in the race, we know there was that phone call between senator jd vance and also vice president kamala harris agreeing to meet again once again on the debate stage. we'll have to see what happens with a potential vice presidential debate and whether or not governor tim walz will agree to debate senator jd vance, donald trump's running mate. george. >> okay, rachel, thanks. let's bring in our political director, washington bureau chief rick klein, and, rick, as now that we know that it's going to be waltz, i imagine he's going to be on a continuous loop between the states of michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. and we're seeing this at a time when kamala harris does have some momentum in those states. >> george, the harris campaign knows that if you win in the upper midwest, you almost certainly win the election. and the movement that we've seen in the battleground state polling in the 538 polling average just since joe biden left the race is substantial. and it's particularly pronounced in those upper midwest states in wisconsin, in michigan, in pennsylvania, now, tim walz isn't from any of those states. other finalists like josh

shapiro were. but walz is from just the other side of those states. he represents a part of the country, a redder part of a bluer state. as jon karl pointed out. that's critical. a lot of voters there are similar to the voters in wisconsin and in michigan and in pennsylvania. that will almost certainly decide the election. i think it's fair to assume that governor walz, after he's selected, will spend plenty of time in those battleground states, as will vice president harris herself. she's going to be in pennsylvania later today. she's planning to hit all of those big battlegrounds in the next couple days. you see that shift, all of those three states at the top wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania that by themselves almost certainly would make vice president harris president. harris. and her hope will be that tim walz helps deliver those states doubling down on the midwest. >> okay, rick klein, thanks very much. one more time. vice president kamala harris has picked minnesota governor tim walz is poised to pick tim walz as her running mate. we're going to return now to our regular programing. for many of you, that's good. morning america, of course, is going to be much more tonight on world news tonight. and you can get the latest any

previous summer peaks and still rising. cdc data shows covid levels and sewage has been high or very high for eight weeks in a row, the same length as last summer's surge. one particular subvariant is quickly becoming dominant. health experts say the kp 3-1-1 strain is more contagious and infecting more people who haven't had covid before. hospitalizations are still just a fraction of what we've seen in previous summer surges, but they are ticking up.

unrelated crash yesterday. many gathered to show their condolences for the officer, including his cso partner. >> so real. like we it's hard to face this right now because it feels like it's a nightmare. >> another cso, veronica bear, was also seriously hurt in the crash. a person was arrested for felony vehicular manslaughter and two counts of felony dui. >> a rising political star in san francisco now charged with rape, 35 year old john jacobo surrendered to police yesterday charged with four counts, including rape and domestic violence. giacobo was the director of a powerful housing nonprofit but resigned last year after our media partner, the san francisco standard, published a report on assault claims against him. at least three women filed police reports over alleged abuse and harassment. >> axel reportedly closed its san francisco headquarters in the coming weeks and relocate employees to offices in san jose

them rolling around, eating bamboo, just being generally awesome. uh. right now it's a little a little quiet, but coming up on gma, you're going to see all the things that they do, how great they are, how they got here, what it means to have them here at panda ridge at the san diego zoo. the public is so excited. it's been 21 years since pandas were brought over from china to the us. so a resumption of panda diplomacy here, resulting in a very excited public in san diego. >> and will, i'm not sure if they're talking about this at san diego, but our zoo in san francisco is poised to also get pandas and we think that's going to happen next year. so i'm curious about all of the money and the work they had to do to get ready for these two pandas at san diego zoo. >> well, yeah, the caretakers from the zoo here went over to china to start checking out what the pandas were doing. make sure that they were healthy, get them quarantined, and then they brought them over here. and the pandas have been here since june

acclimating to their environment and seeing how they would react to seeing other people. and now, on august eighth, i guess on thursday, that's when they open up to the public. so very exciting. the public can see them in three ways. they can do a panda tour, which is a very hot ticket. they can get time tickets, which means they have to show up at the exact time on their ticket, or they can do standby. but san diego very excited and san francisco soon to be thrilled to. >> yes, we are excited and i know you are too. this is an awesome assignment. how close were you able to get to the pandas? >> did you pet the panda? >> did you hug the panda? what did you handshake with? >> panda? i wish i know i wanted, i would have loved to. i wanted to get in there, maybe put on a panda suit. but no, i had to stay at a safe distance to make sure that everything's okay. but at this panda ridge, like it's very close up, there's a whole walkway with glass. and these pandas do whatever they want, and it's built into this whole hill so early, like yesterday, we saw panda just eating right in front of us,

valley and moving into our neck of the woods, mainly the south bay and the inland east bay is poised to see some of the hottest temperatures today. so high of 98 in concord, 99 in fairfield go to 88 in san jose, but 98 in morgan hill, 88 in napa. but a hot 99 in lakeport. it is warm around the bay shoreline. we're in the 70s and 80s for daytime highs, but cooler weather is on the way for the weekend. we'll show you

could now make history. more than two feet of rain could hit some areas. amanda at the live desk with more on the weather threat now. >> reggie. a days long weather threat is unfolding this morning for millions of people in the southeast. what's left of hurricane debby is dumping historic amounts of rain up to 30in are possible in some areas. the storm is expected to crawl across south georgia, then stall off south carolina. in georgia, the mayor of savannah issued a curfew warning the flooding could mean obliteration for parts of the city. >> this type of rain hovering over us, coming with the intensity that they tell us that it's coming, it's going to catch a whole lot of people by surprise.

>> it may be that this is the most water we've seen for a long time. maybe we don't know. so stay alert, stay tuned. and stay safe. >> debbie left streets under water and homes without power. crews rescued hundreds of people from flooded neighborhoods. the storm is blamed for at least four deaths in florida and one in georgia. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thank you. amanda. supervisor aaron peskin is putting pressure on developers and the city to build more affordable housing. the mayoral candidate pointed at this site. this is near downtown san francisco, and it's sitting empty. as you can see here in the video. it's been approved, though, for 120 units of market rate housing. but the developer has delayed this project because of lack of financing. peskin wants the city to acquire the site using tax exempt bonds to build middle income housing. >> it is a source of financing for us to be able to convert vacant offices downtown to affordable housing. that's thousands of potential units rent on units financed with the

tax exempt bonds would be capped at 15% below market rate. >> peskin says that would allow city workers like firefighters, bus drivers and janitors to live in the city. >> this morning we're following up on san francisco's attempt to move unhoused people off the streets. abc7 has learned the approach seems to depend on which department is running the sweep. the city's encampment resolution team is conducting sweeps with advance notice to people on the streets, and they bring in social workers as they clear the camps. now, at the same time, sfpd is doing its own operations. they get help from public works, the police operations don't include social service support for people being moved. officers are supposed to hand out resources. >> we're going to the afternoons now. early evenings, places where there are smaller encampments and where there have been encampments before trying to keep people from camping in those areas. >> all of this in line with

mayor london breeds announcement last week, the mayor told us sfpd's response will be modified based on effectiveness. homeless advocates are pushing back on the city's approach, calling it inhumane. last week, multiple organizations signed on to a letter to mayor breed, the city attorney and the governor demanding an end to the sweeps. >> for all of our reporting around the homelessness crisis, including expert analysis, how we got here you can head to our website, abc7 news.com, or go to your abc7 news app. some tourists on lombard street surprised by what they saw when they visited the iconic curvy street. they saw this. a group of bikers riding down the crooked street on sunday. then several of the bikers started doing wheelies on larkin street. the man who recorded the video says the bikers even rode around a police officer who was there controlling traffic. >> i just found it interesting that it would happen with a officer. there are definitely antagonizing a similar biker.

>> we'll call it. a takeover happened a few weeks back along geary boulevard. you can see this video of it. you could also see this police officer following the bikers as they ran red lights. the head of san francisco police officers association says the department is 600 officers short, and they just don't have enough staff to stop this type of illegal activity. >> now it's our morning money report. google is facing legal trouble that could change its core business. a federal court found google holds an illegal monopoly over its internet search. the judge ruled google is in violation of antitrust laws by requiring its search engine be the default on android smartphones. a separate proceeding will determine what remedies should be applied to increase competition. the justice department also currently has antitrust lawsuits against apple, amazon and meta. now we take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway this morning. you can see we're actually up this morning, 142 points tonight. >> the coliseum could be hosting baseball history, but not the

low 60s. now tomorrow we'll begin to see some of this heat retreat. but you'll notice this cool down. really? here on thursday we're getting back to average, so to speak, for this time of the year. and it's a similar story on friday, which kicks off outside lands in the city. we'll have a high of 66 degrees on friday. look at saturday, the pick of the festival, mostly sunny and a mild high of 70 degrees. the accuweather seven day forecast shows you we're heating up inland today, but then cooler weather quickly arrives by the end of the week. we'll start off the weekend on saturday with sunny skies, temperatures going below average early next week. guys. >> drew thank you. scientists at the smithsonian have come up with an out of this world idea to preserve the earth's biodiversity. so this involves sending biological material to the moon. scientists say craters on the moon's polar regions provide temperatures that are consistently cold enough to allow cryogenic preservation. without liquid nitrogen or electricity, like you would need on earth. the moon is also not at risk for natural disasters,

scientists admit. this idea would be extremely expensive. they suggest starting with the most endangered species and then expanding to other animals. a museum and a shoe company teamed up to create the world's longest shoe lace. the city museum in missouri was determined to take a world record after they lost one earlier this year. they teamed up with the shoelace factory to make the 2729 foot shoelace. it took nearly 24 hours to weave using the factory's antique machines. the team had to prove the shoelace was actually woven threads, and had to prove that it functioned by tying a shoe. okay, okay that's a waste of string. is it not? like on one hand, we're talking about we have to send animal dead animals to the moon to try and preserve them. and then the next, we're going to waste the earth's resources like this to make a world record for the longest shoelace. do you see the problem here? >> look at the joy on her face.
