matier mentioned trying to paint the harris walz ticket as extreme. san francisco liberals. walz ended his speech last night by going after donald trump and his running mate j.d. vance, saying trump would take us backwards. the harris campaign says they've raised more than $20 million since walz was announced as her running mate. the vice president and walz will continue their battleground state blitz through saturday, and then the vice president heads to san francisco. and according to the examiner, she will attend a fundraiser that's hosted by her joint fundraising committee that is on sunday live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news kumasi. >> thank you. gloria. tensions are rising between the mayor of oakland and the city's police officers and amanda. the police union is now calling for the mayor to resign. >> kumasi the oakland police officers association sent the mayor a four page letter calling for her resignation, and in that letter, the police union says her policies have made it harder for police to fight crime. they point to recent budget cycles from the mayor and city that have cut police staffing.

expand. some, though, are expressing concern about this. this spring, voters gave police the power to use surveillance cameras and drones to chase suspects. police say they've now made three arrests with the help of drones, and the video is now part of prosecutors cases. >> we have a sense of urgency to make this a safe city and to do the things that the people in this city deserve. >> right now, the department says it only sends out a drone if it hears of a possible crime in progress. the department says it hopes to expand its use of drones, using them proactively in parts of the city with higher crime concerns. the electronic frontier foundation, which advocates for digital privacy rights, says the use of drones is alarming, is disturbing. >> that sfpd hasn't publicly released its policy related to the drones. there is currently a california state law, ab 481, that is meant to dictate transparency. >> chief scott says sfpd is in compliance with state law. he

says the department is only storing video of crimes and deleting all other video within 30 days. san francisco transit leaders have tabled a vote to expand a ban on right turns at red lights across the city. the sfmta board of directors discussed the idea yesterday. some voiced concern about a blanket ban. instead of focusing on specific areas where there are high number of crashes, there was also a desire for more feedback from the community. the city banned right turns on red lights at around 200 intersections in downtown, and the tenderloin earlier this year. >> it helps keep things a little more distinct as to who gets to move when it's the worst thing, it will impede the flow of traffic. >> sfmta says priority areas for the expansion could be parts of the mission in nob hill. the proposal will be back on the board's agenda early next month. >> floppy disks still exist, and the muni metro light rail in san francisco runs on them. the current train control system requires loading the floppy disk every morning to operate the

network. muni officials said the system has been the problem for the past issues and delays, and according to the chronicle, transportation officials are working to replace this. the new $700 million project would be muni's first upgrade in nearly 30 years. all right, everybody, be careful where you park in the east bay, starting today, ac transit is cracking down on drivers who are parking in bus lanes. 100 busses have now been equipped with ai powered cameras so they can detect when a vehicle is illegally stopped or parked in a bus lane. >> what we train these these cameras, what we train the software to do is to recognize a number of things. bus lines, bus lane dimensions, the size of the bus, the bus stop itself if it does not recognize or falls outside of those parameters, then it captures a photo and a ten second video. >> those videos and photos are

then sent to the cloud and reviewed by a sheriff's deputy, who will determine if the vehicle is in violation. ac transit will start to issue warnings today. that will continue for 60 days. then ticketing starts in october. if you get a ticket, the citation will be $110. >> people on the peninsula have a new way to get around this morning. waymo launched its driverless car service beyond san francisco yesterday. the robo taxis are now carrying passengers in daly city, coma and broadmoor. that's a ten square mile expansion. waymo's have been on the road since may. testing san mateo county supervisor david canepa is concerned about the expansion he has pushed for more local control over well, where self-driving cars can go. canepa told us his office only found out about the peninsula service monday, and he believes local governments and first responders should have more notice. >> let's not become the wild, wild west of autonomous vehicles where we have all these

autonomous vehicles and different companies and we really can't manage the roadway. it's not fair and it's not safe for the public. >> a couple important things to note. waymo's are not allowed on highways right now, so you will not see any zipping down one on 1 or 2 8-80. and they're not allowed to go to sfo. >> 510 this morning an update on debbie. it is still a tropical storm, but it is a lot less organized over the last 24 hours. but still, it is a rainmaker and it will sit over south carolina over the next 24 hours. so the latest track of debbie does have it making its way through south carolina through tomorrow morning. a big change to the track over the last 24 hours. it's moving more inland and it takes off very quickly. by thursday afternoon, gets picked up by a cold front and then it races off to the northeast. friday morning it's over. the nation's capital. by friday night, it's already in new england. so tomorrow debbie will pick up some speed as this cold front will move through. now, rainfall totals have been lowered a bit and pushed farther

front lines, including a tanker crew that flew all the way from australia to help the park. fire is delaying the start of school for some students. forest ranch charter school, which is northeast of chico, has pushed their start date from august 13th to the 19th. the campus survived the fire, but phone and internet lines were damaged on friday. >> many of us were thinking that the whole town was going to go, so as a community, we are very fortunate. even though we can run school nowadays without the internet. when you go back and forth and back and forth, it's challenging and a lot of the teachers materials are online, so trying to find a workaround for that was going to be challenging. >> the school is planning to hold an ice cream social tomorrow that will include a community meeting to address the fire. >> california is getting $600 million to improve its power grid. the grant from the department of energy will be used to upgrade 100 miles of electric transmission lines. this investment will save an estimated $200 million from

the county now recommending people mask up in crowded public places. good morning everyone. it's wednesday, august 7th. >> we start with a check on the weather with drew. hey. >> good morning. we'll take you up above into sutro tower because this tells the story very well. early on it is clear out there. not nearly as much fog as we had this time yesterday morning. and that means sunshine appears very early for a lot of us, and that will lead to warming temperatures pretty quickly throughout the day. current number right now it's 56 degrees in the city with clear skies. you look at temperatures around the region. it is a warmer start compared to yesterday, low and mid 60s inland, mid 50s and low 60s around the bay shoreline. some cooler spots in sonoma county, santa rosa, sonoma right now coming in in the low 50s. so looking at today's forecast, it is another warm to hot day away from the coast. inland will hit about 100 degrees in our hottest areas around the bay shoreline. we will see sunshine throughout much of the day. today we're not fighting that fog early on. temperatures go into the upper

kern county after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit south of bakersfield last night. all right. so this is a look at the usgs earthquake map. and that cluster of orange and red dots all happening between bakersfield and la. and you can see there are quite a few of them. all of this started with that initial shaking just after nine last night, and it was quickly followed by a 4.5 aftershock less than a minute later, and we've counted at least 25 aftershocks since then. people as far south as la felt the rattling. many people reported getting alerts from their phones. this was via the state's earthquake early warning system. so far, there are no reports of any damage overnight. chp did say a large boulder was blocking a lane along i-5 on the grapevine. now we know how to prepare for an earthquake. but are you ready? you need a kit, you need to make a plan, and you need to be informed. if you need help with any of that, you can go to abc7 news dot com slash

chiming in about, well, speaking about his love for the city and their love for san francisco will likely be on display this weekend. the examiner reports that harris will be at a fundraiser hosted by her joint fundraising committee in san francisco on sunday. reggie in the south bay, a driver hit and killed a 12 year old boy in one of san jose's major intersections. >> this happened yesterday afternoon at lee and camden avenues in the cambrian park neighborhood. his scooter, all that was left behind. police say the driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. that boy is the 30th person to be killed in a traffic crash in san jose this year. as covid cases go up across the bay area, one county is now recommending you wear a mask in crowded indoor settings. amanda has more on the suggestions health officials are making so that you can stay safe. >> reggie, the contra costa county health department, says masking is important right now as the bay area is seeing a summer covid surge. officials say it's just a recommendation and not a health order, and it

aligns with the existing state requirements. the department says the kp two variant, also known as the flirt strain of covid, is driving the current surge in cases. officials recommend wearing an n95 or n95 respirator indoors if you're in public spaces, or if you're around people you don't live with. and with the new school year about to start, the department is encouraging students and staff who are at risk of serious infection to mask inside the classroom. they also recommend teachers and staff provide masks to anyone who asks them for one. back to you. kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. some motivated teens are helping to build a better bay area. they helped deliver two pods to unhoused people at an encampment in in oakland yesterday. this is a part of their teen community service project called pods for change, a summer program at the nueva school in san mateo teaches middle school students about engineering and construction for social good. so these pods are made to be parked on the side of the street. they

measure four feet wide, four feet tall. they're eight feet long. they have insulation windows, a folding desk, two lockable doors, and they're made to last at least 15 years. >> an unhoused man who lost his van in a fire has a new place to call home. and it's all thanks to the team of doctors helping him fight cancer. last week, the massive fire at an industrial building in berkeley spread to the van where ryan, six, lived with his dogs. they all made it out unharmed, but the van is destroyed. right now. six is in the middle of chemo, battling stage four cancer. his oncology team at stanford started a gofundme for him, helping him move into an airbnb. >> i finally feel safe. i don't have to look around. while i'm cooking. it's all yeah, it's very comfortable. >> six told us he's very grateful to his doctors for the help with housing as they fight his cancer together. he's hoping to use the money raised from the
