the 60s from danville to concord. livermore 65 mid 50s for the city. good morning. oakland at 5864 in san jose. sonoma, a bit cooler than that coming in at 53 degrees. so we do have another warm day inland. we're hanging on to this warm air for one more afternoon. lots of sunshine to see. we're topping out again in the upper 90s to near 100 yesterday, our hottest spots at about 101. very similar today around the bay shoreline. a big difference compared to yesterday is a lot of sunshine throughout the early portion of our morning. we don't have that marine layer overhead visibly so sunny skies this afternoon, upper 70s to the low 80s for daytime highs. and along the coast it will be a mix of sun and clouds. throughout the day we'll have highs in the low and mid 60s. let's check in with amanda and see if those drive times. >> hi drew. yeah, we're going to take a look at our overall map showing you current conditions. you see that typical slowdown along the altamont pass. it's made even slower this morning because of a minor fender bender involving a big rig. this happened on westbound 205 just before westbound 580. so that will slow you down just a bit

likely we are going to hear more about the bay area from both sides in the coming days and weeks. today, vice president harris and governor wallace are scheduled to have rallies in wisconsin and michigan during the rally in philadelphia yesterday, walz touted vice president harris's accomplishments as san francisco district attorney and california attorney general. former bay area congresswoman jackie speier, who worked with walz in congress, talked about the vice president choosing walz, and he brings some midwestern charm and i know midwestern charm because i'm married to one, and they are plain speaking, modest. >> he's going to be labeled as a california progressive in midwestern clothes. and he is i mean, minnesota is basically the california of the midwest. it's very progressive, a recreational marijuana choice codified within the state laws. >> and the trump campaign wasted no time making that comparison that abc seven insider phil

matier mentioned trying to paint the harris walz ticket as extreme. san francisco liberals. walz ended his speech last night by going after donald trump and his running mate j.d. vance, saying trump would take us backwards. the harris campaign says they've raised more than $20 million since walz was announced as her running mate. the vice president and walz will continue their battleground state blitz through saturday, and then the vice president heads to san francisco. and according to the examiner, she will attend a fundraiser that's hosted by her joint fundraising committee that is on sunday live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news kumasi. >> thank you. gloria. tensions are rising between the mayor of oakland and the city's police officers and amanda. the police union is now calling for the mayor to resign. >> kumasi the oakland police officers association sent the mayor a four page letter calling for her resignation, and in that letter, the police union says her policies have made it harder for police to fight crime. they point to recent budget cycles from the mayor and city that have cut police staffing.

>> 25 years ago, when i came here as a young police officer, we had 750 police officers. we're working backward. if we think that we can function as 600 police officers or 678 police officers in this city. >> mayor shengtao responded to abc seven news yesterday, saying this letter from the police union is a distraction. >> stop with the infighting. there is no reason for that. my door is open to anybody who wants to have a conversation with me. and at the end of the day, what this is going to cause is more instability that we in the city of oakland cannot afford. >> oakland is currently dealing with a $177 million deficit. mayor tao says she is focused on preventing severe cuts to police staffing, while avoiding layoffs of any city worker. back to you at the desk, reggie. >> thanks, amanda and san francisco police are calling this a game changer for fighting crime. new drones deployed by officers are leading to arrests, and sf. sfpd is looking to

expand. some, though, are expressing concern about this. this spring, voters gave police the power to use surveillance cameras and drones to chase suspects. police say they've now made three arrests with the help of drones, and the video is now part of prosecutors cases. >> we have a sense of urgency to make this a safe city and to do the things that the people in this city deserve. >> right now, the department says it only sends out a drone if it hears of a possible crime in progress. the department says it hopes to expand its use of drones, using them proactively in parts of the city with higher crime concerns. the electronic frontier foundation, which advocates for digital privacy rights, says the use of drones is alarming, is disturbing. >> that sfpd hasn't publicly released its policy related to the drones. there is currently a california state law, ab 481, that is meant to dictate transparency. >> chief scott says sfpd is in compliance with state law. he

says the department is only storing video of crimes and deleting all other video within 30 days. san francisco transit leaders have tabled a vote to expand a ban on right turns at red lights across the city. the sfmta board of directors discussed the idea yesterday. some voiced concern about a blanket ban. instead of focusing on specific areas where there are high number of crashes, there was also a desire for more feedback from the community. the city banned right turns on red lights at around 200 intersections in downtown, and the tenderloin earlier this year. >> it helps keep things a little more distinct as to who gets to move when it's the worst thing, it will impede the flow of traffic. >> sfmta says priority areas for the expansion could be parts of the mission in nob hill. the proposal will be back on the board's agenda early next month. >> floppy disks still exist, and the muni metro light rail in san francisco runs on them. the current train control system requires loading the floppy disk every morning to operate the

network. muni officials said the system has been the problem for the past issues and delays, and according to the chronicle, transportation officials are working to replace this. the new $700 million project would be muni's first upgrade in nearly 30 years. all right, everybody, be careful where you park in the east bay, starting today, ac transit is cracking down on drivers who are parking in bus lanes. 100 busses have now been equipped with ai powered cameras so they can detect when a vehicle is illegally stopped or parked in a bus lane. >> what we train these these cameras, what we train the software to do is to recognize a number of things. bus lines, bus lane dimensions, the size of the bus, the bus stop itself if it does not recognize or falls outside of those parameters, then it captures a photo and a ten second video. >> those videos and photos are

then sent to the cloud and reviewed by a sheriff's deputy, who will determine if the vehicle is in violation. ac transit will start to issue warnings today. that will continue for 60 days. then ticketing starts in october. if you get a ticket, the citation will be $110. >> people on the peninsula have a new way to get around this morning. waymo launched its driverless car service beyond san francisco yesterday. the robo taxis are now carrying passengers in daly city, coma and broadmoor. that's a ten square mile expansion. waymo's have been on the road since may. testing san mateo county supervisor david canepa is concerned about the expansion he has pushed for more local control over well, where self-driving cars can go. canepa told us his office only found out about the peninsula service monday, and he believes local governments and first responders should have more notice. >> let's not become the wild, wild west of autonomous vehicles where we have all these

autonomous vehicles and different companies and we really can't manage the roadway. it's not fair and it's not safe for the public. >> a couple important things to note. waymo's are not allowed on highways right now, so you will not see any zipping down one on 1 or 2 8-80. and they're not allowed to go to sfo. >> 510 this morning an update on debbie. it is still a tropical storm, but it is a lot less organized over the last 24 hours. but still, it is a rainmaker and it will sit over south carolina over the next 24 hours. so the latest track of debbie does have it making its way through south carolina through tomorrow morning. a big change to the track over the last 24 hours. it's moving more inland and it takes off very quickly. by thursday afternoon, gets picked up by a cold front and then it races off to the northeast. friday morning it's over. the nation's capital. by friday night, it's already in new england. so tomorrow debbie will pick up some speed as this cold front will move through. now, rainfall totals have been lowered a bit and pushed farther

inland yesterday. if you remember, we had some bull's eyes over new york city. boston. now that rain has shifted more to interior new york interior pennsylvania. but still, this could be a problem. some heavy rain in excess of six inches is possible in the mid-atlantic, and the northeast through friday night. back here at home, it is clear out there live. look, you can see the lights in the east bay. here's the bay bridge. so that marine layer is pretty much nonexistent in most areas this morning. so it will be bright this morning pretty much from the get go. for a lot of us, we warm quickly throughout the day. we do have another heat advisory in effect, the same area that it was in effect yesterday. it's just been extended through today through 9 p.m. so highs today. it is quite warm once again away from the coast, mid and upper 90s if not close to 100 inland 90 in san jose, 80s and 90s in the north bay 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline. but much cooler weather moves in for the weekend. we'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. reggie. >> drew. thank you. we're

insight. >> amanda kumasi crew members on that flight are revealing they thought passengers had been sucked out of the plane. the captain wasn't even aware there was a hole in the plane until after landing. the captain said they knew something was wrong, but they had, quote, no idea if it was a hole, a window or a main cabin door. transcripts from boeing employees questioned by investigators paint a hectic and disorganized picture of boeing and its supplier, spirit aerosystems. it describes planes on the factory floor with defects. >> one boeing employee, not a contractor, said planes come in up every day. planes come in up every day. every day. meaning you're you were at the time receiving quote unquote, up planes. >> boeing says it has made changes to boost safety, including a new design for the part that blew out on the alaska airlines flight. now, a final report on the door panel blowout could take up to 18 months. back to you, reggie. >> microsoft is firing back at

delta, the airline blames the company and cybersecurity software firm crowdstrike for causing thousands of canceled flights in last month's global i.t. outage. lawyers for microsoft say other tech companies, not microsoft windows most likely service delta's it system. they say delta's comments are, quote, incomplete, false, misleading and damaging to microsoft and its reputation. delta has said the outage cost them $500 million. in today's gma first look, the ftc is warning travelers to beware of scammers posing as airline customer service agents on fake social media accounts. here's abc news reporter trevor ault. >> in this morning's gma first look vacation scam alert, it was just a mistake on my part. >> that was almost could have been a really costly one. >> barbie dacey was looking forward to a caribbean vacation, but when she tried to call customer service to confirm her trip, she says she instead ended up on the line with a scammer. >> then when the man said that

sunshine early on. hello san jose, a live look in the south bay, the accuweather headlines calling for the heat lingering inland. we still have another day underneath this heat advisory, but tomorrow the heat is going to ease and it's a bit of a different story as we head into the weekend. the weekend weather is breezy and we're much cooler by sunday. we'll show you that in one second. here's future weather. we have some high clouds that will move through this morning, but it's all about that sunshine pretty fast and we warm quickly already into the low 90s by lunchtime inland 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline and then heading into the afternoon. just like yesterday. we're pretty close to about 100 degrees in our hottest spots inland, 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline that heat advisory is in effect for the south bay. so highs today in our microclimates 90 in san jose, very similar to yesterday, 96 in morgan hill. we'll go to 85 in cupertino up along the peninsula. it's warm. 85 redwood city, 78 san mateo. the coast will be lovely today. it's a mix of sun and clouds, but temperatures on the comfortable side, low 60s for half moon bay

in pacifica across the city today. we have very limited cloud cover right now, so we see sunshine pretty quickly. this morning. we'll hit the mid 60s to the low 70s for daytime highs in the north bay does get hot in spots 92 in sonoma, 100 in cloverdale, 87 in vallejo. the east bay we see sunshine pretty much from the start. that sun's up here just after six, 15, 75, in oakland, 84 in fremont and then inland. another hot day mid 90s to about 100, in brentwood. overnight tonight we will see our marine layer grow a bit so that means we'll likely find some coastal drizzle overnight lows in the mid 50s to the mid 60s. now future tracker showing you by thursday we will track that heat retreating. we'll drop about ten degrees and our daytime highs. it's a similar story on friday. we start the weekend out with lots of sunshine, pleasant temperatures and then cooler weather quickly moves in here on sunday. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast warm day heat advisory today will cool off by tomorrow and friday. saturday the warmer of the two days this weekend. by

harris and her new running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, are heading to michigan and wisconsin today. they'll be in a total of seven states this week. >> number two, sfmta has delayed a vote on expanding restrictions on right turns at red lights in san francisco. >> number three, the oakland police officers association is calling for oakland mayor xiang tao to resign. it sent a four page letter detailing a series of concerns, including a lack of police staffing. mayor tao calls the letter a quote, distraction. >> number four contra costa county health care officials are now recommending you wear a mask in crowded indoor settings to help slow the spread of covid. last month, san francisco health officials made a similar recommendation. >> and number five, we're in store for a warm afternoon. a heat advisory continues for the

south bay. you'll see those temperatures above average. cooler weather starts moving here tomorrow. >> and number six to tracy, right before the altamont pass, there was an earlier minor fender bender involving a big rig on the shoulder. now there's a new incident. a motorcycle crash in the same area blocking the shoulder and the center divide. chp is on scene. speeds are down to six and 11mph in that area. an alternate route is grantline road and altamont pass road. >> number seven waymo driverless car service has expanded beyond san francisco. you can now scale a ride in daly city, coma and broadmoor this morning we're following the park fire closely changing, changing weather conditions have intensified the fire. >> it grew 13,000 acres in just 24 hours. new evacuation orders were issued to hima county yesterday. the park fire remains the fourth largest wildfire in state history. it's burned more than 420,000 acres. containment is only at 34%. crews from around the world are now on the

front lines, including a tanker crew that flew all the way from australia to help the park. fire is delaying the start of school for some students. forest ranch charter school, which is northeast of chico, has pushed their start date from august 13th to the 19th. the campus survived the fire, but phone and internet lines were damaged on friday. >> many of us were thinking that the whole town was going to go, so as a community, we are very fortunate. even though we can run school nowadays without the internet. when you go back and forth and back and forth, it's challenging and a lot of the teachers materials are online, so trying to find a workaround for that was going to be challenging. >> the school is planning to hold an ice cream social tomorrow that will include a community meeting to address the fire. >> california is getting $600 million to improve its power grid. the grant from the department of energy will be used to upgrade 100 miles of electric transmission lines. this investment will save an estimated $200 million from

improved grid efficiency. the money will also be used for training programs for utility workers. >> you might have some items in your home that could lead to disaster if they're not handled properly. the dog that you see here was chewing a portable cell phone charger, and as you can see, it caused an explosion and a house fire in tulsa, oklahoma. the tulsa fire department says the fire caused significant damage inside the home. lithium ion batteries are prone to cause fires when damaged or even overheated. thankfully, the dogs and a cat that live in that home escaped through a dog door. >> a man battling stage four cancer loses his van in a fire, leaving him and his six dogs without a place to sleep. coming up at 530. how a team of stanford doctors stepped in to help. >> right now, a live look outside at sfo. it's 527 and we're coming right back. >> this is abc 724 over seven.

the county now recommending people mask up in crowded public places. good morning everyone. it's wednesday, august 7th. >> we start with a check on the weather with drew. hey. >> good morning. we'll take you up above into sutro tower because this tells the story very well. early on it is clear out there. not nearly as much fog as we had this time yesterday morning. and that means sunshine appears very early for a lot of us, and that will lead to warming temperatures pretty quickly throughout the day. current number right now it's 56 degrees in the city with clear skies. you look at temperatures around the region. it is a warmer start compared to yesterday, low and mid 60s inland, mid 50s and low 60s around the bay shoreline. some cooler spots in sonoma county, santa rosa, sonoma right now coming in in the low 50s. so looking at today's forecast, it is another warm to hot day away from the coast. inland will hit about 100 degrees in our hottest areas around the bay shoreline. we will see sunshine throughout much of the day. today we're not fighting that fog early on. temperatures go into the upper

70s and lower 80s and then along the coast. it's pretty nice day along the coast. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the low 60s. so across the region today, another day of above average warmth, the heat advisory is in effect in the south bay through 9 p.m. this evening. let's check in with amanda and see the drive times. >> hi drew. we're going to take a look at our overall map. we're seeing a pretty clear commute. this is minus the typical slowdown that we see along the altamont pass. but things are definitely slowing down just a bit more because of a motorcycle crash. this is westbound 205 before 580. you can see it's slowing things down to about six and eight miles per hour. in that area. this is a new incident different from the minor fender bender involving a big rig. we were talking about 30 minutes ago, but it's in the same area blocking the shoulder and the center divide. you will notice chp on the scene. uh- 51 minutes is the delay. the backup is to grant line road an alternate route is grant line road and the altamont pass road back to you. the desk. >> thanks, amanda. this morning, aftershocks continued to rattle

kern county after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit south of bakersfield last night. all right. so this is a look at the usgs earthquake map. and that cluster of orange and red dots all happening between bakersfield and la. and you can see there are quite a few of them. all of this started with that initial shaking just after nine last night, and it was quickly followed by a 4.5 aftershock less than a minute later, and we've counted at least 25 aftershocks since then. people as far south as la felt the rattling. many people reported getting alerts from their phones. this was via the state's earthquake early warning system. so far, there are no reports of any damage overnight. chp did say a large boulder was blocking a lane along i-5 on the grapevine. now we know how to prepare for an earthquake. but are you ready? you need a kit, you need to make a plan, and you need to be informed. if you need help with any of that, you can go to abc7 news dot com slash

chiming in about, well, speaking about his love for the city and their love for san francisco will likely be on display this weekend. the examiner reports that harris will be at a fundraiser hosted by her joint fundraising committee in san francisco on sunday. reggie in the south bay, a driver hit and killed a 12 year old boy in one of san jose's major intersections. >> this happened yesterday afternoon at lee and camden avenues in the cambrian park neighborhood. his scooter, all that was left behind. police say the driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. that boy is the 30th person to be killed in a traffic crash in san jose this year. as covid cases go up across the bay area, one county is now recommending you wear a mask in crowded indoor settings. amanda has more on the suggestions health officials are making so that you can stay safe. >> reggie, the contra costa county health department, says masking is important right now as the bay area is seeing a summer covid surge. officials say it's just a recommendation and not a health order, and it
