60s in the south bay, 65 right now in san jose. good morning oakland. you're at 60 degrees. the wider view will show you we have some mild air inland from danville to brentwood to livermore. we're in the mid 60s, but in the north bay we do have some cooler numbers in the valleys of sonoma county, santa rosa right now, one of the coolest spots on the map, 49 degrees. but today is another day where away from the coast it is hot so temperatures will take off pretty quickly this morning. they rise rapidly through 11 a.m. and then into the afternoon. we're in the upper 90s to about 100 in our hottest spots inland around the bay shoreline. a big difference today compared to yesterday. we have all this sunshine early on in the morning, so the warming process will be quicker than yesterday. we'll get into the upper 70s, lower 80s around the bay shoreline. even along the coast. it's a beautiful day along the coast, a mix of sun and clouds today and we'll have highs in the low and mid 60s. let's check in with amanda and see those drive times. >> hi drew. we're going to take you to concord where things are definitely slowing down. this is a two vehicle crash that has been moved out of the middle lane and is now on the shoulder

francisco style liberal. >> as you just heard, republicans wasted no time going on the attack. that was j.d. vance, also in philly last night, trying to paint the democratic ticket as extreme. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez here in the studio this morning. gloria, the bay area mentioned by both campaigns yesterday, it was reggie. >> and it's very likely we're going to hear more about the bay area from both sides in the coming days and weeks. today, vice president harris and governor walz are scheduled to have rallies in wisconsin and michigan. and during the rally in philadelphia yesterday, walz touted vice president harris's accomplishments as san francisco district attorney and california attorney general. former bay area congresswoman jackie speier, who worked with walz in congress, talked about the vice president choosing walz, and he brings some midwestern charm. >> and i know midwestern charm because i'm married to one, and they are plain speaking. uh- modest. >> he's going to be labeled as a

california progressive in midwestern clothes. and he is. i mean, minnesota is basically the california of the midwest. it's very progressive. the recreational marijuana choice codified within the state laws. >> the trump campaign wasted no time making that comparison. that abc seven insider phil matier mentioned trying to paint the harris walz ticket as extreme. san francisco liberals walz ended his speech last night by going after donald trump and his running mate j.d. vance, saying that trump would take us backwards. the harris campaign says they've raised more than $20 million since walz was announced as her running mate. the vice president and walz will continue their battleground state blitz through saturday, and then the vice president heads to san francisco. and according to the examiner, she will attend a fundraiser hosted by her joint fundraising committee. that's on sunday live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you, gloria, the chp is investigating after a car that had bullet holes caught on fire

on an east bay freeway. the video shows this car on fire. this is on northbound 880 in san leandro at the washington avenue offramp just before 8:00 last night. chp says the car was hit with bullets on the passenger side. now officers are trying to determine where and when that shooting happened. no one was hurt. >> now it's an interview. you'll see. only on seven. the family of an oakland man is shaken by a devastating shooting. 33 year old hua kuang was sleeping at home in east oakland when a bullet ripped through the wall and straight through his skull. that happened august 1st. kuang remains in critical condition at a local hospital. a family friend tells abc seven the family is afraid to even be at their home. they're trying to move out of oakland as soon as they can. in the meantime, she's calling on local leaders to step up. >> please do something to stop crimes. this is totally

unacceptable. they got to do something. the government, the mayor, the police. just it's just ridiculous. >> kuang is in the hospital for the foreseeable future. his sister says she worries about the financial impact on his wife and their children. in order to help alleviate some of the financial pressures, they have set up a gofundme. they're asking for the community's help. >> tensions are rising between the mayor of oakland and the city's police officers. amanda. the police union is now calling for the mayor to resign. >> kumasi. the oakland police officers association sent the mayor a four page letter calling for her resignation in the letter, the police union says her policies have made it harder for police to fight crime. they point to recent budget cycles from the mayor and city that have cut police staffing. >> when i came here as a young police officer, stop with the infighting. >> there is no reason for that. my door is open to anybody who wants to have a conversation with me. and at the end of the

with the help of drones, and the video is now part of prosecutors cases. >> we have a sense of urgency to make this a safe city and to do the things that the people in this city deserve. >> right now, the department says it only sends out a drone if it hears of a possible crime in progress. the department says it hopes to expand its use of drones, using them proactively in parts of the city with higher crime concerns. the electronic frontier foundation, which advocates for digital privacy rights, says the use of drones is alarming, is disturbing that sfpd hasn't publicly released its policy related to the drones. >> there is currently a california state law, ab 481, that is meant to dictate transparency. >> chief scott says sfpd is in compliance with state law. he says the department is only storing video of crimes and deleting all other video within 30 days. >> san francisco transit leaders have delayed a vote on expanding

a ban on right turns at red lights across the entire city. yesterday, the sfmta board of directors discussed whether a citywide ban was even needed or if the rule should be expanded just to areas where there are a lot of crashes. there was also a desire for more feedback from the community the city has already banned right turns on red lights at around 200 intersections downtown and in the tenderloin. the proposal will be back on the board's agenda early next month. >> take a look at the accuweather forecast. an update on tropical storm debby. it's a lot less organized right now than it was 24 hours ago, but it still is going to be a big rainmaker today. and tomorrow across south carolina and even parts of north carolina. so look at the latest track on debby. it is going to meander very slowly through south carolina, through tomorrow morning. that's why it's going to drop a lot of rain in about 24 hours, because it is a slow mover, but a big change to the forecast compared to yesterday. this storm is really

fire grew 13,000 acres in just 24 hours. new evacuation orders were issued in tehama county yesterday. the park fire is the fourth largest wildfire in state history. it's burned more than 420,000 acres. containment is at 34%. crews from around the world are now on the front lines, including a tanker crew that flew all the way from australia to help out people on the peninsula. have a new way to get around this morning. waymo launched its driverless car service beyond san francisco yesterday. so now these robo taxis are carrying passengers in daly city, colma and broadmoor, a ten square mile expansion. waymo's have been on the roads there for testing since may. san mateo county supervisor david canepa, though, is concerned about the expansion. he has pushed for more local control over where these self-driving vehicles can go. canepa told us his office only found out about the peninsula service on monday, and he believes local governments and first responders

joint fundraising committee. the harris campaign, saying they've raised more than $20 million since walz was announced as her running mate. reggie. >> donald trump announced he's taking part in what he calls a major interview with tesla founder and x owner elon musk. trump wrote on his truth social platform. the interview will be monday. he didn't provide any other details. musk has not yet commented on the interview. last month, musk offered his endorsement for trump after the assassination attempt on him. >> this morning, aftershocks continued to rattle kern county after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit south of bakersfield last night. so if you look at this map, this is the usgs earthquake map that cluster that you see of orange and red dots all happening between bakersfield and los angeles. and as you can see, there are quite a few of them. and that just lets you know where those earthquakes were centrally located. all of it started with that initial shaking just after 9:00 last night. then it was quickly followed by a 4.5 magnitude

the 30th person to be killed in a traffic crash in san jose this year. >> as covid cases go up across the bay area, another county is recommending you wear a mask in crowded indoor settings. amanda has more on the suggestions. health officials are making so you can stay safe. >> reggie, the contra costa county health department, says masking is important right now as the bay area is seeing a summer covid surge. officials say it's just a recommendation and not a health order, and it aligns with existing state requirements. the department says the kp two variant, also known as the flirt strain of covid, is driving the current surge in cases. officials recommend wearing an n95 or n95 respirator indoors if you're in a public space, or if you're around people who don't live with you. and with the new school year about to start, the department is encouraging students and staff who are at risk of serious infection to mask inside the classroom. they also recommend teachers and staff provide masks to anyone

who asks for them. and just last month, the san francisco department of public health recommended wearing masks indoors as well. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. be careful where you park, because starting today in the east bay, ac transit is cracking down on drivers who are parking in bus lanes. 100 busses have been equipped with ai powered cameras that can detect when a car is illegally stopped or parked in a bus lane. the camera will record a ten second video clip and take a picture of the license plate. then that will be sent to a sheriff's deputy who will determine if the driver is in violation. ac transit will start to issue warnings today. it will continue for 60 days. then ticketing starts in october. the final b $110 a big bay area solar company, sunpower corp, has filed for bankruptcy. >> their shares in the stock market took a 34% plunge yesterday. sunpower said in court papers it carries about $2 billion in debt. the san jose based solar firm has been struggling for some time. experts say the company stopped

manufacturing a few years back, policy changes leading to fewer incentives to install solar panels also hurt the company. >> we've undermined incentives. it's not as economic for a roof for a ratepayer, in p-g-and-e's territory to put solar panels on the roof. it just doesn't pencil out all the time. and that has hit the rooftop solar industry pretty hard in the past two years. >> sunpower had to do layoffs, restate earnings, and default on a credit agreement. this year alone, it's replaced its ceo and restructured operations. >> uc berkeley is getting ready to unveil a brand new 14 story student housing tower. some say the dorm on oxford street is more like a luxury hotel. it's across from cal's main campus. this sleek and tall tower replaces a rent controlled apartment building, and it did cost some controversy over housing affordability. however, school officials say this residence hall is addressing the local housing crisis for students. >> we are in alignment with the

city of berkeley, the campus needs to build more student housing on our campus owned property, and this is university property where we built this building. and by building this building, that means that 800, nearly 800 students will no longer be competing for housing and the private market in berkeley, because there is no debt attached to this donor paid for structure. >> there is expected to be $8 million in revenue that is earmarked for 400 student scholarships every year. >> some motivated teens are helping build a better bay area. they deliver two pods to unhoused people. at an encampment in oakland yesterday. it's part of their teen community service project called pods for change, a summer program at the nueva school in san mateo teaches middle school students about engineering and construction for social good. these pods are made to be parked on the side of the street. they measure four feet wide, four feet tall, and eight feet long. they have insulation windows, a folding desk, and two lockable doors made to last 15 years. still to come, a football team

illness. when indoor temperatures reach 82 degrees, that can happen quickly in businesses that have kitchens like restaurants or bakeries. the california chamber of commerce is afraid some business owners are going to have a hard time complying. >> obviously, we want to address heat on those concerns and we didn't oppose working in this space, but it's issues like how do you make heat safety work in a kitchen where you have to make things hot? >> california's new indoor heat standards went into effect in late july. it initially wasn't supposed to happen until october, and unhoused man who lost his van in a fire now has a new place to call home, thanks to the team of doctors helping him fight cancer. >> last week, this massive fire at an industrial building in berkeley spread to that van where ryan 3-6 lived with his dogs. they all made it out unharmed, but the van was destroyed right now, six is in the middle of chemo, battling stage four cancer. his oncology team at stanford started a gofundme for him, helping him

association sued two american producers fresh del monte and westpac avocado, both are based here in california. they are being accused of knowingly importing avocados from areas that were illegally deforested in mexico. the group says it also has evidence the avocado farms are also illegally pumping water from areas facing drought. us ambassador to mexico ken salazar says avocados sourced from illegal orchards should be blocked from the u.s. market. so far, neither the u.s. or mexico has done anything about it. 80% of mexico's avocado exports come to the u.s. now it's your morning money report. >> despite some improvement this year, the bay area's unemployment rate for june was higher than last year, according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics. this year, the rate was over 4%, up from last year's 3.5%. policymakers still see this as a solid labor market, according to experts. the gradual slowing could encourage interest rate cuts soon. now, we
