for joining us. i'm larry beil and i'm kristen z. >> more problems for unhoused rv owners in san francisco. still looking for a place to land? >> yeah, they were asked to leave one location. they ended up at the pomeroy community center parking lot, where now that's creating problems for employees and visitors as part of our efforts to help build a better bay area, we continue to look into concerns involving the homeless. >> all across the bay area. we've certainly done a number of reports on this situation here with the rvs and also in other communities. >> yeah, it's been an ongoing problem and solutions are not that easy. abc seven news reporter luz pena is in studio with us. you've been covering this story. i'm not sure if the whole piece is ready to roll yet, but give us the latest on what's happening. >> yeah, well, the rv residents are now parked outside the community center where previously they were previously on winston drive. and here's the backstory. last week, sfmta began implementing a four hour parking restriction on winston

drive, which meant many of these people who lived in rvs had to find another place to park to avoid getting a ticket. many of them are now parked on zoo road, where the center is located, inside san francisco's largest recreation and rehab center for developmentally disabled children and adults. creating a safe space is what staff members here strive for, but lately, they're growing concerned by the number of unhoused people in rvs parked outside access to the sidewalk, you know, and they're blocking the ramp a little bit. >> we have two accessible ramps on that side, and it's just been a little bit more difficult to access them and parking spots for our staff. i think we've lost about 25. >> gillian flannery is with the center and showed us one of their main accessible entrances. >> we had a fire drill on tuesday, so we tested to make sure we could all get out. >> last thursday, sfmta began implementing a four hour parking limit on winston drive, forcing multiple rv residents to look for other locations to park long

term. many moved to zoo road, where the center is located, and the only parking rule is to move during street cleaning. one of them is yamilet lira. cuanto estas aqui? how long have you been here? >> como otro dia? mas o menos? >> eight days or so. yamilet has lived in this rv for three years with her two adult sons. they moved from winston drive to zoo road and like it here. >> we would like for them to let us stay here. >> she said. the city did offer her shelter, but she refused. she said after an accident she needs her family close to her, cannot live on my own. the center says they have compassion for these families and even offer them to be part of their thursday food pantry, but they want the city to find a solution, compassionate plan that both will benefit uh. >> the pomeroy center and the rv residents. >> in a statement, the mayor's office said the rvs should not remain along zoo road and added in part the mayor's office is

actively working with city departments, including sfmta and hsh. a next steps for this site. we're not pursuing any proposed permitting system for vehicles to remain on site in the public right of way on zoo road or anywhere else. in the meantime, people who frequent the center want a solution soon. it's very disruptive to the people that have to come here. and according to the city's homelessness and supportive housing department, they contacted all the rv residents offering them shelter. and as of june 27th, 23 households, including children and families, have been moved out of their vehicles and are now successfully housed. luz pena, abc seven news. >> luis. thank you. a proposal to build housing for san francisco muni employees is getting extra attention. the housing would be built on the site of muni's kirkland bus yard, near pier 39. board of supervisors president aaron peskin and former san francisco mayor art agnos backed the project to build middle income housing. it's aimed at solving one of the biggest issues that

muni faces recruiting operators, many of whom cannot afford to live in the city where they wor. >> pedestrian and bicycle safety advocates in the south bay are calling for more to be done. after a tragedy tuesday afternoon, a 12 year old boy who was riding a scooter hit and killed at a busy san jose intersection that collision happened in the city's cambrian park neighborhood on camden avenue near highway 85. the fatality was the city's 30th deadly traffic collision of the year. police shared some preliminary information about their investigation earlier in the day. >> the preliminary information that we have is the juvenile was crossing the street against either a red hand, but basically the driver did have a green light going through camden through that intersection on camden. >> at this point, the victim has not yet been identified. police say the driver is cooperating. also in san jose, police officers gave a hero's tribute to an injured community services officer as she was released from the hospital this afternoon. veronica bear was conducting traffic control saturday evening in south san jose, and then a

speeding dodge charger hit her and her partner. her partner, 34 year old long pham, was killed. bear suffered a dislocated shoulder, head injuries and broken bones. colleagues on the police force applauded her heroism as she left valley medical center just a short time ago. >> well, distracted driving continues to be a big issue all across the u.s. school starts tomorrow in newark, so today, the police department conducted a safety operation looking for speeders and drivers who don't stop for pedestrians. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was there. here's the stuff that some issuing a citation for failing to yield to pedestrians. >> it happened fast for this driver named jessica. she says she didn't see a pedestrian crossing or she would have stopped, but she doesn't plan to contest the ticket traffic. >> school an option before getting another point in my license. >> jessica is one of the many drivers stopped by newark police. they spent the morning issuing tickets for those who

failed to stop, for pedestrians and for speeding. >> the most contributing factor is speed, failing to yield to the right of way of vehicles and then turning movements patrol. >> lieutenant brian simon is with the new york police department. he says since school starts on thursday, today's a good day to put drivers on alert, especially since the city's only junior high school is just blocks away from this intersection. >> remind our motorists that they need to slow down, be less distracted, giving themselves more time to their destinations so that they can watch out for all of our our young ones going to school. so they're going to send you a mail. >> either you can pay for it online or through the mail. >> lieutenant simon says over the last year, there were 341 collisions in newark, ten involved pedestrians. none fatal. newark boulevard is a major roadway through the city. wide lanes make it easy to spee. another challenge cell phones. >> it continues to increasingly be a challenge, with not only just handheld electronic devices, but, you know, the gps, monitors that people put in

their cars to remind them, hey, you need to you need to be paying attention to what you're doing. >> the city has conducted several traffic enforcements throughout the year, a constant reminder for drivers to pay attention and a warning it's expensive. lieutenant simon says the ticket with penalties and fees adds up to hundreds of dollars. in newark, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price says she'll decide in 60 days whether to retry a death penalty case after the conviction was overturned because of prosecutor misconduct. now, this case dates back to 1986, when curtis lee ervin was convicted in the murder for hire. death of carlene mcdonald. price says the prosecutor illegally excluded prospective jurors who were black and jewish. now, that was confirmed by the state attorney general, who says the case must either be retried or ervin should be released. >> deputy district attorney mr. anderson, during jury selection, he exercised his peremptory challenges in a way to exclude. i believe it was nine of the 11

black jurors and one jewish juror that price says she will consult with the family of the victim before deciding whether to retry the case. >> last month, price said she supports the resentencing of another man who was in prison because of misconduct by the prosecutor. that also took place during jury selection. now. abc seven news spoke to former alameda county district attorney tom orloff. he was a high ranking prosecutor in the office at that time, and he says there was no policy in the office to discriminate against jury selection. >> in the south bay, firefighters were able to get control of a grass fire burning near 280 and mclaughlin avenue. the fire burned about four acres near a homeless encampment. investigators can now start looking into the cause of the fire. the california public utilities commission is holding two days of hearings, hoping to make those preemptive public safety power shut offs less disruptive and less frequent. the cpuc heard from several utilities in northern california on efforts to make their power grid more resilient to intense

heat, strong winds, or wildfire. liberty utilities, which serves north lake tahoe, says it is insulating power lines, upgrading circuit breakers and stepping up vegetation management around electrical lines. the hearings continue tomorrow when p-g-and-e's presents its efforts to prevent power disruptions. >> san jose community leaders are protesting what they describe as a tale of two hospitals. the group is critical of a plan by hca healthcare to downgrade trauma level services at regional medical center in east san jose, while at the same time expanding services at good samaritan hospital and the west side of the city. >> hca healthcare is seeking support from the city of san jose to expand emergency medical services for wealthier communities here in west san jose while it pulls emergency support away from the communities that need that need them the most. our working class families on the east side. >> hca healthcare says its

building two new hospital wings at good samaritan as part of a seismic retrofit at the hospital. meanwhile, here we go again. contra costa county is joining san francisco in recommending face masks in crowded indoor settings because covid cases are surging as the new school year begins, health officials are encouraging students and staff who are at risk of possible serious infection to mask up inside the classroom. now, just last month, the san francisco department of public health also recommended wearing masks when indoors. >> a new effort to revitalize downtown san francisco. the upcoming events and historic first for teens who want to vote in alameda county, and some special animal sightings in the bay area. we'll give you a glimpse. >> i'm spencer christian, the marine layer is back and the cooling has already begun. i'll have the accuweather forecast in just

victoria's secret confirmed to abc seven news that its final day was on sunday, august 4th. the company says the store closed when its lease ended. victoria's secret still has a store in union square. american eagle closed for good at san francisco center last month following numerous other closures, including, of course, nordstrom and the cinemark theater. >> a new effort to bring people back to downtown san francisco kicked off at embarcadero plaza

today. this is the latest effort to help revitalize the city's core after the pandemic. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns was there to check things out. he shows us how these events are, hoping to make a difference for the struggling neighborhood. >> a new initiative officially kicked off in san francisco wednesday. the so-called bricks at embarcadero plaza is set to run through october, with events happening every wednesday through saturday. its goal a familiar one to bring people back into the struggling city center. >> when we talk to people, what they said was just doing an event or a big concert once is not really going to revitalize downtown. what we need is something happening every day. >> wednesday's event was a business mixer, but organizers say they're planning everything from trivia to family fun days. katie birnbaum is the ceo of into the streets. one of the participants in the bricks program. she says the initiative is about more than just combating the doom loop narrative. it's also a way to help transform downtown into an entirely new neighborhood, different to the one it was pre-pandemic. >> you know, you need all of

those elements to be coming together around the same time for people to then think about a neighborhood and a destination is somewhere they want to go. >> over the past couple of months, the city has launched several of these initiatives to try and revitalize san francisco's downtown core, and we wanted to know if everyday people think it's working just outside the event, we talked with teresa noriega lum, who has worked in the area for years. she says while she thinks these events are effective, there's still more work that needs to be done. i think we're still less than halfway there. >> you know, i think people have gotten accustomed to working from home, and that flexibility is now something that people are expecting from their employers. >> steps away at wok donuts, owner vander hill told us a similar story. vander, who spoke to abc seven news in december, says he recently signed a two year lease at the embarcadero center thanks to the city's vacant to vibrant program. he says he's recently noticed an uptick in foot traffic in the area and hopes his business helps that trend to be part of, like getting folks to come back

downtown. >> uh- speaks, speaks a lot and, you know, i take pride in that as well. >> in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> more pop ups. it was fun. >> yeah they are. and then, you know, sometimes they blossom into regular businesses, right? >> right. all right. let's check out our weather forecast with spencer. it's going to get a little hot still for some of you right. >> the heat is lingering kristi. but the good news is cooling has begun already near the coast. so it will reach other areas by tomorrow. here's a look at what's going on with the satellite radar composite image. and you can see that the marine layer is rebuilding as we speak. and temperatures are already dropping below the levels we saw them at yesterday. at this time it's pretty breezy out there 37 degrees right now, 37 degrees gusts to 35 37mph at oakland, 26 mile per hour winds at sfo, and pretty breezy all around the region. and as you can see, it's several degrees cooler right now in virtually every location on the map than at this time yesterday. so again, the cooling is underway. nonetheless, we still have this heat advisory in

effect for the santa clara valley until 9:00 tonight. so it's still hot in many inland areas. there's still the risk of heat related illness, so don't get too comfortable with things until it cools down everywhere. right now, looking out over san francisco as little a little bit of a thin, low cloudiness is pushing out over the city. it's 64 degrees here in the city, 69. in oakland we've got 81 at hayward, 90 at san jose, 83 redwood city and 61 at half moon bay. and here we are at the golden gate. you can see the clouds getting lower and deeper 85 degrees right now up north in santa rosa, 79 at petaluma, napa, 76 mid 90s right now at fairfield, concord and livermore. so once again, it is still pretty hot in many inland locations. looking out over the embarcadero from our rooftop camera. these are these are the forecast headlines. heat advisory was in effect all day. it's still in effect expires at 9:00 tonight tomorrow and saturday tomorrow through saturday i should say. the heat eases, but it will still be very warm in our inland areas. we'll still see some 90 degree plus readings, but relief arrives on sunday for all areas as it

becomes breezy and much cooler. and that pattern is going to last for a while. here's our forecast animation. overnight high clouds passing by as well as low clouds deepening. they'll be patches of drizzle near the coast and pushing locally on land and out near the bay in the early morning hours. overnight, low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 50s. some of the warmer locations will cool down to only about 6062 degrees. places like livermore and san jose. then highs tomorrow 60 at half moon bay, 65 here in the city. oakland 71. we'll see some low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline up in the north bay. 86 santa rosa 81 at napa. inland east bay. we'll see. highs tomorrow in the mainly in the low 90s or low to mid 90s and down south about 84 at san jose. here's the accuweather seven day forecast for the next three days. again through saturday. we'll still see low to mid 90s as the inland highs, but only mid 70s around the bay shoreline. then a sharper drop in temperatures on sunday. breezy and cooler. only upper 80s inland and going into next week we'll see mainly mid to

take a photo of a bird that's never before seen in california. birders and photographers are getting up early in the morning looking for a slate throated redstart at pine lake park, near stern grove. the rare bird is found in primarily mexico and central america. we talked to a couple of lucky birders who have captured photos. >> i'm so sorry to say this, but we were here for like five minutes. we were really lucky. i don't know, i just had this feeling because the sun was out and it was still pretty early and there weren't a lot of people special. >> you know, the people tell me in the first time in california, you know, they just everybody like it is a very high. >> wow. experts are not sure how the bird got to pine lake. the sighting has received national attention after being featured in the american birding association's podcast, fascinating. >> the oakland zoo conservation society has now rescued its 27th mountain lion, and this guy is one of the zoo's youngest mountain lion rescues. he's only

like 4 to 5 months old. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez introduces us to brier. >> he's doing great. uh- very playful, very engaged. brier is getting used to his new home at the oakland zoo. the small male mountain lion was found alone in el dorado county on thursday and brought to the zoo on monday. they looked for his mom all weekend, so they held him so he wouldn't get hurt, but they cdf put out camera traps all weekend long to see if mom would come back to retrieve him. she did not. brier will stay at the oakland zoo until he's healthy enough and a forever home found for him, likely in another facility since he's so young and lacks survival skills, the zoo says he can't return to the wild. he's too young to be on his own. normally, they stay with the mom until they're about a year and a half or two years old, so you can imagine at 4 to 5 weeks, not even 4 pounds, he would have no ability to survive at all. brier is the 27th

mountain lion rescued through the zoo's bay area cougar action team. i think these guys are our iconic alpha predator here in the state of california. they're kind of our tiger, so i think recognizing all the hard work that we need to do so that we can live our human lives in our homes, driving cars around the state. but how do we coexist with them so that their population doesn't plunge and they don't become endangered? gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> he's so cute playing with the stuffed animal, but once he gets big, look out. if you want to follow the progress of the mountain lion cub, the zoo will be posting updates on their website. >> governor gavin newsom declared tomorrow california panda day, in honor of these two adorable giant pandas that will make their public debut tomorrow at the san diego zoo. yingchuan and xingbao arrived in the u.s. in june, but they have been in quarantine until now. the governor hopes to proclaim a second panda day in the future.

san francisco continues to raise funds to host two pandas at the san francisco zoo, after assurances from the chinese government that they support it. >> coming up, a terrorist plot targeting a taylor swift concert. we'll tell you what we know about the suspects and astronauts already stuck in space for weeks, could now end up being there for months. plus, a historic vote coming up this november in the east bay when we're young, we're told anything is possible... ...but only a few of us go out and prove it.

year olds in oakland and berkeley will be able to vote for their own school board members. >> interesting. >> the implementation is a long time coming. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with a student who believes this will empower young people. >> reporter aaron farrar is enjoying his last few days of summer, but the rising junior at berkeley high school is looking forward to the upcoming school year because he will have a say in who runs his school district in this upcoming year. >> i feel like it will definitely be something completely different. i feel like the students can be able to do something that wasn't given before. >> berkeley and oakland unified school district announced wednesday students like aaron will now be allowed to vote in school board elections. >> i feel like this is just like something that's like, great for students, you know? i feel like it will help our voices with what we want to do. like education wise, it stems from two ballot measures passed in 2016, in berkeley and 2020 in oakland, allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote in school board elections. >> both districts worked with alameda county to implement a registration process they say is

now ready for use. >> for the past several years, we've been working with oakland and alameda county and the state to put this new process in place and to now our responsibility is to let as many 16 and 17 year olds know that you can vote. >> you can participate. >> the berkeley superintendent says high school teachers and administrators across the district are already prepared to help students register when they return to class next week. >> as the educators who work with babies every day will make sure that we're sharing with them information, continuing to share information about what's happening in our district, what's not happening in our districts, what's going on our school boards so that they can be involved and informed. >> mayor aragon says. lowering the voting age for school board elections will help teach teens the importance of voting. >> oftentimes, their their their perspectives and their needs are overlooked by by politicians when really their voice is what we need to hear because they're the future. >> for aaron, he sees this as an opportunity to have a school board that reflects the interests of students. >> it definitely feels like we have the strength to do this now. i feel like it makes us
