good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm phil lipof. tonight, a shocking development as authorities say they have thwarted a deadly terrorist plot aimed at the highest-grossing tour in history, taylor swift's "eras" tour. here's abc's maggie rulli. >> reporter: tonight, taylor swift scrapping "eras" tour after austrian police say they thwarted an isis-inspired terror plot targeting her concerts. "with confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at ernest happel stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone's safety." the decision hours after officials announced the arrest of two suspects they say made detailed plans for an attack

after being radicalized online. one, a 19-year-old, allegedly pledged allegiance to the islamic state about a month ago. authority say the bomb squad removed chemicals from his home an hour south of vienna. they're testing for possible explosives. "eras" drawing record crowds. many americans flying to europe to see taylor swift. fans with tickets sharing their disappointment on tiktok. >> i wanted to be in that environment so bad. >> reporter: sold-out "eras" concerts were expected to draw 65,000 each night, 15,000 additional fans outside. in munich, 40,000 fans who couldn't get tickets piled onto these hills next to the stadium just to catch a glimpse.

>> isis is still out there. they are still active, they are still online, they are still recruiting. >> after the arrests, vienna police were ready to move forward with the show, saying the concrete danger had been minimized. but they acknowledged an abstract threat remained. tonight, taylor swift's team not taking any chances. >> phil: our thanks to maggie. sources tell abc news that information about the threat originated with u.s. intelligence. reps for taylor swift say everyone who bought tickets will get a refund. we turn now to the los angeles trial of tom girardi, the estranged husband of "real housewife" erika jayne, once a pillar of the california legal community winning huge judgments for clients who turned to him for justice. but authorities say he was actual stealing millions from them and funneling some of that money to finance his wife's music career.

here's "nightline" coanchor juju chang. >> juju: from carnival to the courthouse. while "real housewife of beverly hills" star erika jayne parties with her costars in st. lucia, thousands of miles away in los angeles -- >> tom, how are you this morning? >> juju: estranged husband tom girardi is on trial for fraud. the one-time legal titan not saying much as cameras caught him coming and going. >> his clothing is very ill-fitting. he looks like he's put on some weight. he looks really despondent. he doesn't look up much. seems like he has his head down most of the time. >> juju: girardi accused of stealing millions of dollars from his own clients, some of them and others who worked with him testifying against him this week. >> i think it is -- other than burying my son, i think it will be the hardest thing i ever do.

>> juju: girardi's fall from grace captured the attention of the country in part thanks to his wife. jayne star of the bravo franchise "real housewives of beverly hills." girardi himself often appearing beside her. >> i love you, thank you for meeting with me. >> instead of having lunch with gnarly insurance people, i got you. >> juju: the reality tv star has not been charged with a crime related to girardi's alleged scheme and is not part of the federal case at trial, but she is facing a number of civil cases. something she addressed in a sit-down with girardi's victims in the hulu documentary "the housewife and the hustler 2:the reckoning." >> thanks for coming. >> did you ever hear about him taking money or anything before this whole thing blew up? >> no. >> like, the lawsuits that were against him? >> i found out when i was sued in arizona from a lending company. when i was named.

that was the first time. and i said, why am i in this lawsuit? and the three answers i kept getting were, [ bleep ], don't worry about it, i've got it handled. but why is my name in here? i'm not part of the business. so -- that's when i started noticing, something's wrong. >> juju: erika's not expected to make an appears for girardi's trial, but she will be mentioned in evidence and testimony. >> the government did say he allegedly used $20 million of funds to help fund erika jayne's career. so i think in that respect, we will hear it then. >> the ausa is not saying she did anything wrong, they're saying she benefited from all of this and that her profile is part of it. tom was using this money to redirect it to, you know, the "it's expensive to be me" lifestyle. ♪ it's expensive to be me ♪

♪ looking this good don't come for free ♪ >> juju: girardi has pleaded not guilty to four counts of wire fraud. the u.s. attorneys will try to prove to a jury that girardi deliberately stole client money and lied about it. >> emails, voicemails, promises, and lies. but you're also going to see a ton of documents, a lot of which came out in the bankruptcy. so there will be some of that document-heavy testimony. >> juju: the defense says girardi depended on the wrong people and allege it was really his chief financial officer who stole all the money. he has pleaded not guilty. girardi's attorneys maintain that the 85-year-old was in mental decline and had no idea what was going on at the firm. >> all the defense is going to be leaning into tom girardi's aging. he was found competent to stand trial, and none of this seems to have been at issue when these thefts were going on. we know the u.s. attorneys are going to lean into tom girardi

covering up his behavior. >> juju: the current charges against girardi come from four specific former clients, including kathy and joe. >> he is not going to do this to anybody else. he should have never done it to me. shouldn't have underestimated me. >> juju: their story shown in "the housewife and the hustler" and its sequel "the reckoning." >> i'm fighting for money that i'm owed. >> juju: joe was burned over 90% of his body and won a settlement worth tens of millions. the u.s. attorneys say girardi leveraged his fame as the lawyer who won the erin brockovich case to assure clients like themselves that he was on their side. >> i think people who know this case know the gomezs. that's why they're first up. so dramatic, physical injuries that are very apparent. i think it's important to put a face and a pain behind that to the jurors.

>> the jury may only hear about four cases, because those are the cases that are going to be tried. but tom has a trail of tears of victims that go back decades. >> juju: kimberly archie is a close family friend of the gomezs. she worked with girardi as an expert in sports injuries. >> i don't know who's been more gaslit in the last 20 years than girardi's victims but they definitely have been through a lot. i would hate to see the system let them down again. >> juju: many of girardi's former clients and people who feel wronged by the attorney also showed up at court today. even though their allegations aren't on trial. for them, this feels like the only opportunity to hold girardi accountable. >> justice, to me, is an idea. and it's only as good ar the people that represent it. >> i would like to see him get convicted. >> to see someone with so much evil behind them is a really

one of the final seven who made the cut, dancing with glo since she was 5 years old. what makes glo a good coach? >> she's really nice but knows how to keep you on track, keep you doing good. she's not too hard on you, but she's also not too loving on you. >> you know as well as i do, she's one of the weakest technical dancers in the group. >> juju: i did see you in tears quite a bit. either talking to your mom or worried about a competition. do you feel like it stresses you out a lot? >> yeah, it definitely stresses me out a lot. because some of the moms might be talking bad about me, but i also have to not show that. i have to be my happy self. >> juju: the show has a sizable dose of mama drama with plenty of clashing egos. >> you literally just said bitch to who? >> you. you're a bitch. >> oh, good one, bravo. >> juju: are these moms living vicariously through their kids?

>> every dance mom thinks their kid is a star. i choose xws whether or not is going to be the standout. >> juju: family dynamics often spilling into the studio. >> can you please see if your hair is going to stay tied? >> no, it just fell out. >> stop letting her talk to you like that. >> you have to parent her. either parent her or step away. do something. obviously what she's doing isn't working. >> juju: you hear glo critiquing your relationship with your daughter. how does that sit, in your mind? >> our relationship is definitely a bit of a push and pull. we know how to push each other us a buttons. we grew a lot from the show. in how we communicate with each other. >> look at me. can you honestly tell me you tried to do an aerial just now? >> i did, but -- >> no, you didn't. >> juju: did you does it worry you your tween daughter is not just facing scrutiny but doing it for the world to see? >> ashland is independent, she's a free spirit. that's part of what makes her great.

>> juju: a lot of people felt -- i mean, look, there's tough love. then there's borderline abuse. how do you draw that line? >> it -- i don't think i've ever been abusive to my students. i like to think i haven't. i think my reputation stands for itself. i have students from 40 years ago who still reach out to me. >> juju: it's hard to watch a "dance moms" show without making comparisons to abby lee miller, whose over-the-top teaching style helped make the show a smash hit, and years later, living on across social media. >> you were 25 minutes late to the bust your ball competition last month! >> juju: that show ended in 2019. two years earlier, miller had been sentenced to a year in federal prison after pleading guilty to income and customs fraud. she was also diagnosed with burkitt lymphoma and uses a wheelchair. we interviewed abby and former students. >> i would say towards the end is where it got very difficult

for me. i was having panic attacks on the show. >> i can't breathe. >> let's go outside. >> juju: do you think that you would take back some of the harshness or any of it when you look back? >> absolutely. yes. i would. >> juju: why? >> because no matter how harsh i was on the kid, they weren't going to get it. they just didn't have the talent. they didn't have it. i don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, i want to get them to be better, to be the best that they can be. >> juju: one of abby's former star pupils, jojo siwa, reacting to the revamped show on "access hollywood." >> i think "dance moms" will never be "dance moms" without abby. >> juju: social media buzzing about the reboot. >> i'm sorry, but no abby, no show. >> juju: although she knows she's got dig bansing shoes to fill, glo is hoping audiences will 1/2 the new series on its own terms. are you the new abby lee, and do you like that?
