here's abc's janai norman. >> three, two, one -- >> reporter: dressed to impress in black and white. giant pandas stealing hearts here in california today. >> happy panda day. >> reporter: meeting the public for the first time since their arrival six weeks ago, these fluffy bears, considered national treasures in china, their native country. >> party, bob, it's panda-mania here in san diego. >> reporter: and this pair -- yu xian and xin bao -- are now on a special mission. the first to set their paws on american soil in more than two decades. >> it's a big deal. i'm sitting here trying to act professional, but i am just so excited. because we know people love these creatures. what we want to do is harness that love to make sure they continue to thrive. >> reporter: they're chinese ambassadors of so-called panda

diplomacy. the practice of gifting and loaning the furry creatures to other countries as a gesture of goodwill. this tradition, believed to date as far back as the tang dynasty and practiced during the nixon administration to ease tensions with the united states. this panda-plomacy coming in handy again with the relationship between the u.s. and china recently strained, leading to a pause last year in the panda swapping program. now, with the program resuming, two more pandas are expected to be headed for the states. abc news got a behind-the-scenes look to see how staffers at the san diego zoo are taking care of their newest vips. very important pandas. yung xian is the more laid

>> he loves his bamboo, kchlkt in his habitat. he explores and is curious. >> reporter: boy, can they eat. the zoo growing eight different species of bamboo for the pandas' picky palates. their diet consisting almost exclusively of this plant. >> we give them a choice so they can tell us what are their favorites balanced with what are the most nutritious species of bamboo for the bears. >> reporter: to learn more about these furry diplomats, i traveled straight to the source. sichaun, china, a mountainous region home to the friendly giants. we're just starting and i'm already out of breath. i trekked 40 miles on foot to the invite-only wilderness training base at the national nature reserve. it's beautiful out here, but it is a pretty tough hike. ranger hoshon ziang has me on an unusual work uniform.

so-called undercover panda suits, protecting captivity-born cubs from getting used to being around humans. >> reporter: it's kind of like a baby in a crib at home. if they can, they'll find a way to escape. the goal, to release them into the wild once they've lost their baby teeth and grown bamboo-tearing permanent teeth. solitary animals, the pandas were elusive during our trek. but at the panda center -- the way they are nestled in those trees? i also learned how to prepare yummy treats for our always hungry guests at a panda base in yauum, china, with car taker li. easy enough, right? okay, okay, take two.

well, not good enough, she says, and smacks it again. showing me the proper technique. jun xiau says it's time to wrap things up, she has hungry waiting toddlers. that panda had formula milk the caretakers provided. it's about a year old. this is when they start being introduced to solids, like that little bit of bamboo already broken up so they can eat it while they're still getting their adealt teeth. china's giant pandas are typically gentle creatures, feeding 2 1/2 hours and napping, napping, napping some more. the giant panda was removed from the endangered list in 2016 after 26 years of extensive conservation efforts. but the work continues. >> one of the things that's so important about giant panda conservation is it really forms

>> phil: welcome back. the deadliest wildfire in modern u.s. history tore through the town of lahaina on maui one year ago, leaving a community reeling. but it has inspired a new generation of organizers to stand up for change. here's a preview of abc's "howie rising: the fight for hawaii's future." ♪ ♪ >> reporter: last august after the deadliest wildfire in modern u.s. history tore through the oceanside town of lahaina, more than 7,000 residents were left homeless. their lives thrown into sheer chaos. >> we don't know how we're going to live. we don't know how to start over again. >> reporter: many families like courtney lazo's were placed into emergency shelters. in the weeks to follow, hotels were opened up as temporary shelter. >> you had families all in one

hotel room, sharing one room, sharing one bed. that's no way to live. >> reporter: just a month into the crisis, with families still homeless and reeling, governor josh green made the controversial decision to reinstate tourism in west maui in october. >> i know it's going to be bumpy, but people will help us heal if they come to maui. >> when the governor decided to open up to tourism, we were mad. we were so mad. >> reporter: the leaders of la hang that strong delivered a petition to the state capitol signed by more than 14,000 people opposing the reopening of tourism in west maui. >> we presented a petition to the governor's office. he pretty much disregarded our ask. >> i think they thought we were a bunch of radical kids who were just going to make a bunch of noise. >> reporter: at the time, governor green said he respected protesters but could not allow the economy to collapse.

>> so i thought, okay, how can we do some sort of protest? >> reporter: ultimately, lahaina strong took their protest to the beach, camping out near some of the busiest hotels in town to bring attention to the housing crisis facing fire victims. >> there's no long-term housing or rental solutions right now for the displaced maui residents. >> we're protesting the situation of our people. we were just wanting to take care of them and get them into a place of stability. >> reporter: it turns out many were unable to find a new place to live, because almost half of the dwellings in west maui were used solely as short-term vacation rentals, rented out to tourists by investment owners who may charge thousands a month. >> that is a problem. people are struggling to survive, and all of our housing inventory is tied up with people that are trying to profit off of hawaii. >> there's people saying, i'd rather remain vacant than having

a local stay in my place. >> help the people! help the people! >> we're hoping by this demonstration, we can successfully convert short-term rentals into long-term so the families of lahaina can come back. >> you had visitors who were pissed off that they spent hundreds of dollars on their dinners and lunches on the beach to stare at tents. >> we're here in this position, camping on the beach, day 69. as things continue to play out down at the beach, one week turned to two weeks turned to two months. and we were not seeing action at all. so we pivoted. and figured, you know what, then? let's change the law. >> reporter: despite lacking political backgrounds, the young activists taught themselves how to lobby for bills. >> today at the state capitol, members of lahaina strong are set to hold a press conference

disabilities. it culminated in may 2020. in the oval office, donald was there, and he was very gracious. several other folks were there, including the group that we brought down. we dispersed. i was asked to go back and see donald. he greeted me with his familiar "hey, pal, how's it going?" we sat down for a bit. and he just came out with, "these people, all the expenses, they should just die." he's talking about human beings who have complex issues. and the first thing he could say was, "they should just die." >> reporter: fred claims this wasn't isolated, describing a phone call to alert his uncle the medical funds set up by the family for his son william was running low, a fund he says the former president consistently replenished. >> a couple years ago, i called him.
