me? >> is me. >> so come on, song of the summer. outside lands begins today, including, of course, sabrina carpenter headlining. thousands of people expected to attend the three day festival in golden gate park. we have everything you need to know if you're heading out there and how to get around this weekend. good morning. welcome to friday, august 9th. look who's here. hi, friend. hey christian. >> it's good to be here. >> we haven't seen you in a minute on this show. >> it's been a while. i've missed this. this group. it's. it's fun. >> you haven't missed the alarm? >> no, i haven't, i almost did this morning, though. yeah yeah, but i'm here, i'm here. it's good. yeah. hey. it's great weekend for outside lands. the weather is going to be fantastic. let me give you a look at what's happening right now. you know, normally this time in the morning we have a little bit of lingering low clouds at the coast, but no hint of a marine layer right now, except for some patches of some light thin clouds 53 degrees here in the city right now. mid 50s at oakland and hayward. we've got low 60s at san jose and redwood city, 54 at half moon bay, nice view of the

golden gate where normally at this time of the morning, we'd expect to see pretty dense layer of low clouds. 52 right now at santa rosa, petaluma, 50 mid 50s at napa, fairfield and concord, and livermore are in the upper 50s already. here's our forecast animation. there is some drizzle near the coastline, but not much of it has moved onshore this morning. so we're going to have some quick some quick clearing and lots of sunshine today. high temperatures will range from about 60 to half moon bay to low and mid 60s around the bay shoreline to low and mid 90s inland. so it's still going to be pretty warm inland, but not hot the way it was earlier in the week. and as we look ahead, tomorrow will bring us a day similar to today's with low to mid 90s in the 70s around the bay and a sharp cool down on sunday. more about that a little bit later. right now a check on traffic with amanda. yeah. >> good morning spencer. we're going to take you back to the golden gate where you can see nothing really on the roads, nothing in your way, especially as you're heading in or out of the city here at 502. that's the case, i guess. my clicker is not working, but that's the case with much of the bay area this

morning. we'll send it back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. developing news in the south bay san jose police investigating a crash involving one of its police cruisers. it happened just after 830 last night at an intersection in front of san jose community college on leland and moorpark avenues. the condition of the officer and the other driver are not known. >> oakland mayor xiang tao, who faces a recall vote in november, is fending off new calls for her to resign. she spoke with us to defend her position. we told you earlier this week the oakland police officers association is asking the mayor to step down. they say the city is a more dangerous place as a result of her leadership. mayor tao joined us on midday live yesterday to respond to those claims. >> it was not actually the whole association. you know, i want to commend all of our working officers who come in day in and day out to do the hard work driving crime down. and so what this is, is that it is a four member executive team who took this unanimous vote. four members uh- of the opoa

executive board, who is calling for this and who is stating actual fact? i mean, false facts, right? crime is trending down and that is because of the great work of our officers. and i have received so many calls from our rank and file, so many calls from officers who are doing the right work every day to say, we do not stand with this statement. >> leaders of the oakland police officers association have said they'll back the recall effort unless the mayor resigns. >> new details on the shooting death of oakland police officer tuan lay last december. information presented in court this week reveals lay was shot from behind, according to the chronicle, he and his partner were in an unmarked vehicle following after burglary suspects from a cannabis facility on the oakland embarcadero. a suspect in a car trailing the undercover officers opened fire, hitting lei in the head. four people were later arrested and charged the suspect, who police say shot

officer lay, was acting as a lookout for the group, and alameda county judge is now deciding if there is enough evidence to send this case to trial. >> happening today, san francisco police officers will remember one of their own, officer luciano ortega. he died unexpectedly of an unknown cause late last late last month after being on the force for nearly a decade. officer ortega most recently worked out of the mission station in a video he made for the department. he said being a police officer was the only job he's ever wanted. a service for officer ortega starts at 930. this morning. that's at saint mary's of the assumption. >> there will be at least one presidential debate between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump. the two agreeing to face off right here on abc. and amanda, this morning, there are questions about whether the two other debates announced by the trump campaign yesterday will actually happen. >> yeah, kumasi and one debate in particular on fox is definitely in question. the harris campaign says she won't agree to any other debates until

trump shows up to the debate here on abc that september 10th, trump announced his version of the debate schedule during a meandering, hour long news conference yesterday at the at his estate in florida. he continued to make false claims about the 2020 election, attacked vice president harris intelligence and lashed out about the size of the crowds at her campaign rallies. at one point, trump began speaking about the vice president's relationship from decades ago with former san francisco mayor willie brown. he also inaccurately described surviving a near-death experience in a helicopter. >> well, i know willie brown very well. in fact, i went down in a helicopter with him. we thought maybe this is the end. we were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. this was not a pleasant landing. >> the new york times reports trump confused willie brown with former california governor jerry brown. however, both say they have never been in a helicopter

with trump that had to make an emergency landing. as for their campaigns, trump will be in montana today. vice president harris is headed to arizona. of course, leading up to the debate and all the way through november, you can find all of our election coverage and analysis right now at abc seven news.com. and wherever you stream abc seven. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. this morning there's a growing debate over dogs at a san francisco park. pet owners want their own space. the city is demanding they stay out, at least for now. the signs at jackson park and potrero hill are clear no dogs are allowed on the sports fields. that doesn't stop some nearby residents from walking their pets around anywa. >> beautiful field. you know, we've seen it not being used. and so when there's no kids or there's no events going on, we bring our dogs here. >> some pet owners recently told our partners at sf standard tensions have reached a boiling point, with rec and parks rangers. they say they've even been chased from the park by

rangers with megaphones. residents have collected nearly a thousand signatures petitioning the city to create a space for dogs at the park. san francisco rec and parks department says plans are in the works in the coming years. >> the only things that we run into problems with is the sometimes they leave the dog poop. you know, the owners don't pick up after themselves. >> dog owners believe using the park is harmless. they say the closest dog parks are inconveniently far from the neighborhood. people using the fields for sports as you just heard say, the pets are a problem if you need to take bart this morning, service is back to normal after a network issue closed two lines for hours yesterday. >> the issue started around ten in the morning. the green and the orange lines running between hayward and san jose were knocked off line. bart officials say stations on these lines had to be closed out of an abundance of caution. >> whenever anything impacts the train control system that requires us to respond and to be assured that that is working properly, because that system is

what allows us to avoid any sort of, collisions on the system. >> crews have restored service at all stations. bart says the issue doesn't appear to be related to the electrical fire that forced several stations to close in oakland almost two weeks ago. that issue impacted service systems service. excuse me, system wide for days. >> a couple of big events taking over parts of san francisco this weekend. first of all, vice president kamala harris is going to be back in the city and just hours from now, the outside lands music festival is set to kick off at golden gate park. abc7 news reporter lena howland live in san francisco this morning. lena, even if you aren't going to either one of these events, traffic could be a real headache. >> yeah, reggie. and that's really an understatement. san francisco is expected to be packed all weekend long, and there are already road closures in effect that we wanted to tell you about before stepping out for your morning commute for outside lands. the san francisco recreation and park department says that meadow and road

closures in golden gate park began earlier this week. that includes closures at middle drive to accommodate the load in load out for the festival, along with the polo field and mclaren path. mayor london breed says police will be on high alert all weekend. they have enhanced their safety plan over the years with technology this year that includes drones. mayor breed says outside lands is expected to bring a $75 million boost to the local economy this year and year over year. they continue to do well, contributing $1 billion to the city's economy over the last six years, $45 million in economic opportunity, an opportunity to provide the great programing and to keep our parks and open space what they are today. >> so it's great to be here. we want to let everyone know. we want to encourage you if you're coming to outside lands, use public transportation, there's free bike parking and there's an

opportunity to come here to have a good time and to have fun. >> saturday evening, as up to 75,000 people are enjoying the music at outside lands, vice president kamala harris and her running mate, governor tim walz, will fly into the city. they'll attend a fundraiser at the fairmont on sunday. there's also speculation vp harris could make a stop at the festival after getting the endorsement of other popular artists like charli xcx and megan thee stallion, though none of those claims have been confirmed yet by the festival organizers or the harris campaign. the bottom line here is if you are heading to san francisco this weekend, plan ahead. the giants are also playing tonight and on sunday afternoon, so your best bet for getting around is going to be public transit. live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> i'm happy to say we're going to have a nice, pleasant weather for outside lands. we've got a big high pressure system over in

the southwest that's controlling factor in our weather right now, bringing us mainly sunny skies today and tomorrow and relatively warm conditions. notice the absence of a morning marine layer. right now the wind is relatively calm and breezy at sfo and gusty over at fairfield, right now it's a few degrees cooler in most bay area locations than at this time yesterday. so we get the day started with a cool start. compare with a 24 hours ago 54 degrees in san francisco. right now we have mid 50s at oakland and hayward, low 60s at san jose and redwood city, and 54 at half moon bay at the golden gate. no marine layer right now, so traffic is moving smoothly and conditions are relatively clear 52 degrees up north right now at santa rosa, 50 at petaluma, mid 50s at fairfield, concord and livermore, fairfield, concord, actually 59 degrees. so that's our warm spot at the moment. and these are our forecast headlines today. we'll have a few patchy morning clouds, but certainly lots of sunshine in the afternoon tonight. the marine layer returns over the weekend a tale of two forecasts. actually a warm and sunny on saturday, but much, much cooler on sunday.

fifth deadliest wildfire in us history, killing 101 people. 12,000 people were forced from their homes. people gathered yesterday for a paddle out where they dropped flower petals into the ocean. they united over all they've lost as they continue the long process of rebuilding together. the famous banyan tree in lahaina is showing signs of strong recovery as well. burned in the fire and now has plenty of green leaves and fruit. the fire remains under investigation and a $4 billion victim settlement was announced late last week. >> as we remember the anniversary of the maui wildfires. abc news has an all new prime time special, maui rising. the fight for hawaii's future. it's narrated by actor and hawaii resident jason scott lee. tonight's special examines how the tragedy ignited a grassroots movement for statewide change. >> august 8th was a wake up call. change has to happen.

solution in order to gain the convenience of faster access to a stadium, or even faster concessions, or faster access to an event. >> beam said. browns fans are now getting into the stadium four times faster when you actually take a picture and you take a selfie at home to register for the system, and then when you show up, there's a camera that is used, typically an ipad, to access the event. >> those pictures are immediately, changed into a mathematical representation that is then in turn encrypted. >> the nfl tells us for now, the facial authentication program is only available for the team game day personnel, vendors, and media fans are not included. every nfl team can use the new technology. levi's stadium had no comment. the mlb, for example, just launched their go ahead entry program this past spring at oracle park. giants fans who are 18 or older can enter using a camera at designated gate. we spoke to

anil jain, a professor at michigan state university, about this growing technology. >> when you enter the united states, it used to be fingerprints, but now it is face recognition. >> jain suggests people who voluntarily register for similar systems know if the company will sell or not sell their information to third party applications, you know, will you get some specific emails from advertisers? >> you know, you know, it's one of those things where it should only be used for the purpose for which it was being collected. and you agreed. >> and beam said, that's exactly what wicked safeguards are. their data is not centralized, it's not sold or given to any third parties. >> your face is your payment method. your face is your credential. it's a much easier and more secure method. and i do believe this is what the future will look like. >> this program is completely optional in san jose. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> well, sometimes we all need a

petaluma, 50 mid 50s at napa and fairfield and upper 50s to concord and livermore. so moving along, taking a look at the forecast headlines, you can see that we're going to have lots of sunshine today and it's going to start pretty soon. tonight the marine layer returns to the coast and locally across the ba. and the weekend outlook calls for two very different kinds of weather patterns. saturday, tomorrow mainly sunny and warm. sunday will be much, much cooler. looking around the bay area today. look for highs of 85 at san jose and 90 for morgan hill. so pretty warm in the south bay. mild on the peninsul. 76 at san mateo, 76 palo alto. low 60s on the coast. downtown san francisco will top out at 66 degrees today up in the north bay. look for highs of 85 at novato, 91 at santa rosa, 82 at napa. east bay. highs oakland 72, san leandro 74, castro valley 80 and the inland east bay will be our warmest region as it often is. 92 at concord 94, pittsburg, 92 at livermore, 89 at san ramon. here's the accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow. mild at the coast uh-

national nomination, right as tens of thousands of people are coming here for outside lands. if you have plans in the city, you know it's going to be busy. vice president harris and her running mate, governor tim walz, are set to arrive saturday night, and then they'll attend a fundraiser at the fairmont hotel on sunday, according to our media partners at the east bay times. the tickets range from $3,300 to $250,000 a person. the event already has $600,000 in donations committed. the bay area is home to some of the biggest democratic party donors in the country, and this won't be the last time the harris campaign is here before election day, bloomberg reports. there's already another fundraiser planned in mill valley for august 17th, when vice president harris and governor walz arrived saturday night, the outside lands music festival is going to be in full swing. it officially gets underway later today. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in san francisco with what you need to know before you head to golden gate park, or what you need to know if you are going to be around golden gate park. lena

francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. this morning, still no arrests after some scary moments at uc berkeley, there was an hours long lockdown yesterday. the search for a suspected shooter, the reports of shots being fired near the clark kerr campus just after 7 a.m. one neighbor we spoke with said that he heard the shots. >> i was laying in bed about 737. i don't know what time and i thought i heard a pop, you know, the gunshot. and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, all you heard was sirens and everything going off for about ten minutes. >> authorities later raced up to a home on panoramic way. yesterday afternoon, officers left without finding anything or anyone there. >> happening today, thousands of hotel workers across the bay area will be voting on whether or not to authorize a strike. it comes as their current union contract is just days from expiring and amanda, what are they asking for? >> well, kumasi, the local chapter of the unite here union is calling for better wages, affordable health care and lighter workloads. >> the union's contract expires

next wednesday. the union says the vote to authorize a strike comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations with hyatt, hilton and marriott. now the vote covers housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders and bell attendants. and, according to unite here, the u.s. hotel industry profits were 26% higher in 2022 than in 2019. but hotel workers aren't seeing that increase in their pay, as well as a loss of hours. they say covid era service cuts continue to be in place, including understaffing. no daily housekeeping and not bringing back food and drink options at hotels. the grand hyatt hilton, union square and a handful of other hotels in san francisco would be impacted if a strike happens. however, the vote happening today is just to authorize a strike. it does not mean a strike will actually take place. we're reaching out to the hotels, which could be impacted, and we'll let you know when we get a response back to you at the desk. >> thanks. building a better bay

area includes making changes to improve education and mental health. for one school district, that means keeping cell phones out of the classroom. students at mount diablo high school are adjusting to a new no cell phone rule. yesterday, when they returned to campus for the first day of school, they got a phone pouch to keep their phone in all day. the rule was based on studies showing student cell phone use could lead to increased anxiety and other schools have seen academic improvements. >> what we were finding as we were doing class visits and walking around campuses, that students were on their phones all the time. and as we're talking to teachers and even talking to students and students, actually admitting, like i'm watching tiktok during class and i should be paying attention to the teacher. >> some teachers said the transition wasn't easy. several students got in trouble for having their phone on them. the trend may continue. the governor is working to restrict phone use in schools statewide. the fbi just raided a san francisco tow company known best for trying to tow a moving car downtown.

you'll probably remember this video that when it happened, it was a pretty scary situation for the people inside the car. the company was banned from operating in the city after that incident. fbi agents raided several sites. abc seven news has learned that two people were detained on federal charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. it's all apparently tied to a scheme to defraud an auto insurance company. a neighbor at one of the raid locations tells abc seven news reporter luz pena she heard what sounded like a flash bang around dawn, and then looked out to see agents with their weapons drawn. >> esperar yo no mas estaban apuntando. >> i didn't see them shoot anybody, but i did see them point to the location. >> one of the detainees, jose vicente badillo, operates two towing businesses in san francisco. one of them, jose's towing and auto towing, is affiliated with specialty towing. >> candlestick park was home of the giants in the 40 niners for about 40 years, both teams found new homes and the stadium was

demolished in 2015. but now there's a clearer picture of what is next for the site. the nonprofit bay area council endorsed a new project to build 7200 apartments, condos and townhomes on the site. a third of them affordable. there will also be commercial space, high rises, parks and an innovation district in the shape of a baseball diamond. if the project gets approval from the city, the first phase of development could start next year. >> if you want to go to the final a's game at the coliseum, you'll have to go to the resale market. the team announced the september 26th game against the rangers is sold out. the a's will not be uncovering the tarp seats right now. starting today, the team is offering a ticket deal for games on the 24th and the 25th, so you can still see the stadium one last time. it just won't actually be the last game. there are deals for two and $10 tickets, with the proceeds going toward the boys and girls club of oakland. the team will play the next three years in sacramento after the season. >> highway honor the proposal

remote area, making it difficult for firefighters to reach it. conditions are also ripe for the fire to spread, with high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds. now a little further north, the park fire has grown to more than 427,000 acres. it's still 34% contained. the terrain is making things difficult for firefighters because it's so steep. cal fire is trying to get ahead of the flames by setting controlled burns to create breaks, like the crosier fire. the weather is a concern. >> he's already etched into the history books, but now state lawmakers want to honor willie mays by etching his name along the bay area's most traveled freeway. if passed the new willie mays highway would be a nearly two mile section of interstate 80 from the spot where the bay bridge enters san francisco to the 101 golden gate bridge exit. the stretch that overlooks the city on one side, and, of course, oracle park on the other. the state bill asks the department of transportation to determine the price of installing signage so donations can cover that cost. now to a
