the end. we were in a helicopter. >> now, at six, the former president claiming he once almost went down in a helicopter with former san francisco mayor willie brown. this morning, brown saying it's not true. >> then the vice president's visit to san francisco isn't the only thing that will impact traffic. this weekend, tens of thousands headed to golden gate park for outside lands. the steps to make sure that everyone is safe then. >> yabba dabba doo! check out this homemade car straight out of bedrock. straight out of bedrock. >> did they have cars like that in bedrock? >> good morning. it is friday, august ninth. >> i'm going to start with a check of our forecast with our friend who's in the building with us this morning. >> building? yeah. being outside the building is not bad either this morning because it is nice out there. take a look at what's going on. looking at the satellite radar composite image, we've got mainly clear skies to start the day. we're pretty unusual most of this week. we've had some low clouds and fog and even some drizzle onshore. right now we're looking at temperatures that are generally

about two or 3 or 4 degrees lower than they were at this time yesterday morning. so off to a nice, cool and crisp and clear start 54 degrees right now in san francisco, upper 50s at oakland and hayward and redwood city, san jose 62 degrees. skies are getting brighter even at the golden gate right now. 51 degrees in santa rosa, 50 in petaluma we've got mid 50s at napa, fairfield and upper 50s at concord and livermore. as we get into the afternoon hours, it's going to warm up nicely and our inland areas, it will remain mild in other locations. 66 here in san francisco. we'll see low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline and low to mid 90s in the warmest inland locations that looking at the forecast going into the weekend, more excuse me. mild to warm tomorrow, but breezy and cooler on sunday. and that cooler pattern continues into next wee. amanda. >> all right spencer not too bad on the san mateo bridge. you're taking a live look at it now. of course, taillights heading westbound. it'll take you 11 minutes to get from the toll plaza into foster city. other drive times a six minute drive from highway four to walnut creek, walnut creek to 580. that will be a 14 minute drive. and

then that typical slowdown 35 minutes from tracy to dublin. but we do want to get to a bart alert. bart is recovering from an earlier problem. they're telling us that there's about a 20 minute delay on the berryessa line in the richmond and daly city directions. this is all because of an earlier equipment problem on the tracks near bayfair. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. developing news in the south bay, san jose police are investigating investigating a crash involving one of its police cruisers. it happened just after 830 last night at an intersection in front of san jose community college on leland and moorpark avenues. the conditions of the officer and the other driver are not known. >> oakland mayor shengtao, who faces a recall vote in november, is fending off calls for her to resign. she spoke with us to defend her position. we told you earlier this week, the oakland police officers association is asking the mayor to step down. they say the city is a more dangerous place now as a result of her leadership. mayor joined us on midday live yesterday to respond. >> it was not actually the whole

association. you know, i want to commend all of our working officers who come in day in and day out to do the hard work driving crime down. and so what this is, is that it is a four member executive team who took this unanimous vote of four members uh- of the opoa executive board, who is calling for this and who is stating actual fact? i mean, false facts, right? crime is trending down and that is because of the great work of our officers. and i have received so many calls from our rank and file, so many calls from officers who are doing the great work every day to say, we do not stand with this statement. >> leaders of the oakland police officers association have said they'll back the recall effort unless the mayor resigns. >> new details on the shooting death of oakland police officer twan lay last december. information presented in court this week reveals lay was shot from behind, according to the chronicle, he and his partner were in an unmarked vehicle following a burglary following

burglary suspects from a cannabis facility on the oakland embarcadero. a suspect in a car trailing the undercover officers opened fire, hitting lei in the head. four people were later arrested and charged the suspect, who police say shot officer lay was acting as a lookout for the group. an alameda county judge is now deciding if there's enough evidence to send this case to trial. >> happening today, san francisco police officers will remember one of their own, officer luciano ortega. he died unexpectedly of an unknown cause late last month after being on the force for nearly a decade. officer ortega most recently worked out of the mission station in a video he made for the department. he said being a police officer was the only job he's ever wanted. a service for officer ortega starts at 930 this morning at saint mary's of the assumption. >> there will be at least one presidential debate between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump. the two have agreed to face off right here on abc and amanda, this morning. there are

questions about those two other debates announced by trump. >> yeah, kumasi one debate in particular on fox is definitely in question. the harris campaign says she won't agree to any other debates until trump shows up to the debate here on abc. that's september 10th. trump announced his version of the debate schedule during a meandering, hour long news conference yesterday at his estate in florida. he continued to make false claims about the 2020 election. he attacked vice president harris's intelligence and lashed out about the size of the crowds at her campaign rallies. at one point, trump began speaking about the vice president's relationship from decades ago with former san francisco mayor willie brown. and trump also inaccurately described surviving a near-death experience in a helicopter. >> well, i know willie brown very well. in fact, i went down in a helicopter with him. we thought maybe this is the end. we were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. this was not a pleasant landing.

>> the new york times reports trump confused willie brown with former california governor jerry brown. however, both say they have never been in a helicopter with trump that made an emergency landing. as for their campaigns, trump will be in montana today. vice president harris is headed to arizona and, of course, leading up to the debate and all the way through november, you can find all of our election analysis right now at abc seven news.com. and wherever you stream abc seven, back to you if you need to take part this morning, a network issue that closed two lines for hours yesterday has been fixed. >> the problem started around ten in the morning. the green and orange lines running between hayward and san jose got knocked off line. bart officials say stations on the lines had to be closed out of an abundance of caution. >> whenever anything impacts the train control system, that requires us to respond and to be assured that that is working properly, because that system is what allows us to avoid any sort of uh- collisions on the system.

>> crews have restored service at all stations. bart says this issue does not appear to be related to the electrical fire that forced several stations to close in oakland almost two weeks ago. that problem impacted service systemwide for days now, to the big events taking over parts of san francisco this weekend. >> first vice president kamala harris is set to return to the city for the first time since securing the democratic party's nomination for president. and just hours from now, outside lands is set to kick off at golden gate park. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in san francisco this morning. and really, lena, if you're not going to either of these events, traffic could really be an issu. >> kumasi that's right, san francisco is expected to be packed all weekend long starting today, and there are already road closures in effect that we wanted to tell you about before stepping out for your morning commute. now for outside lands, the san francisco recreation and park department says that meadow

and road closures in golden gate park began earlier this week. that includes closures at middle drive to accommodate the load in and load out for the festival, along with the polo field and mclaren path. mayor london breed says police will be on high alert all weekend. they have enhanced their safety plan over the years with technology this year that includes drones, mayor breed says. outside lands is expected to bring a $75 million boost to the local economy and year over year they continue to do well, contributing $1 billion to the city's economy over the last six years, $45 million in economic opportunity, an opportunity to provide the great programing and to keep our parks and open space what they are today. >> so it's great to be here. we want to let everyone know. we want to encourage you if you're coming to outside lands, use public transportation. there's free bike parking and there's an

opportunity to come here to have a good time and to have fun. >> saturday evening, as up to 75,000 people are enjoying the music at outside lands, vice president kamala harris and her running mate, governor tim walz, will fly into the city. they'll attend a fundraiser at the fairmont on sunday. there's also some speculation vp harris could make a stop at the festival after getting the endorsement of other popular artists like charli xcx and megan thee stallion, though none of those claims have been confirmed yet by the festival organizers or by the harris campaign. the bottom line here is if you are heading to san francisco this weekend, plan ahead. the giants also play tonight on saturday and on sunday, so your best bet is going to be using public transit throughout the weekend. live in san francisco lena howland abc seven news. >> time now for a look at our weather. we're starting the morning with a little bit cooler pattern that we had yesterday

morning. at this time, a 2 or 3 degrees cooler. as a matter of fact, generally around the bay area. so let's take a closer look. here's a view. bright skies looking southeastward from our rooftop camera 54 degrees here in the city right now we have upper 50s at oakland and hayward, 62 at san jose, redwood city 59 and 54 at half moon bay. and it's rather clear at the golden gate as well, 51 degrees right now up north in santa rosa, petaluma, 5054 napa, fairfield 56 and livermore, 56. concord 58 degrees. as we go into the afternoon, we're going to see bright sunshine across the entire region down to the south bay. look for highs of 84. santa clara 85 at san jose, morgan hill 94 on the peninsula, mainly low to mid 70s, but up to about 82 at redwood city. that's often the warm spot on the peninsula. we'll see low 60s at the coast today. downtown san francisco will top out at about 66 degrees up in the north bay 91 santa rosa, 82 at napa, east bay. highs 72, oakland 80, castro valley and mainly upper 80s to low 90s in the inland east bay and overnight we'll see the fog returning to the coast with patchy drizzle. overnight lows in the mid to upper 50s.

people. another 12,000 people were forced from their homes. people gathered yesterday. they did a paddle out and they dropped flower petals into the ocean. they united over all they lost. as they continue the long process of rebuilding. now let's tell you about the famous banyan tree in lahaina. this is a good thing that we can report on. it burned in the fire, of course, as you remember. but now it has plenty of green leaves and fruit growing. the fire remains under investigation, and a $4 billion victim settlement was announced late last week. as we remember, the anniversary of the maui wildfires. abc news has put together an all new prime time special. it's called maui rising. the fight for hawaii's future. it's narrated by actor and hawaii resident jason scott

of a repaving project that's scheduled for next month. this morning, there's a growing debate over dogs at one san francisco park. pet owners want their own space. the city is demanding they stay out at least for now. the signs at jackson park and potrero hill are clear no dogs on sports fields. that doesn't stop some nearby residents from walking their pets around. anyway. >> beautiful field. you know. we've seen it not being used. and so when there's no kids or there's no events going on, we bring our dogs here. >> the dog owners say using the park is harmless. they say the closest dog park is inconveniently far from their neighborhood. people using the fields for sports say the pets can be a problem. >> the only things that we run into problems with is the sometimes they leave the dog poop. you know, the owners don't pick up after themselves. >> some pet owners recently told our partners at sf standard, tensions have reached a boiling point. they say they've even been chased from the park by rangers with megaphones. residents have collected nearly 1000 signatures petitioning the city to create a space for dogs

lane from the left, but again, no backup there either. then we'll take you to our live san rafael cam staying in the north bay. it is pretty quiet this morning. that friday light. we like to talk about reggie. back to you amanda. >> thank you. this morning. still no arrests after some scary moments, scary moments at uc berkeley. there was an hours long lockdown yesterday to search for a suspected shooter. there were reports of shots being fired near the clark kerr campus just after 7 a.m. one neighbor we spoke with said that he heard the shots. >> i was laying in bed about 737. i don't know what time, and i thought i heard a pop, you know, a gunshot. and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, all you heard was sirens and everything going off for about ten minutes. >> police raced up to a home on panoramic way yesterday afternoon, but officers left without finding anyone. >> happening today. thousands of hotel workers across the bay area will be voting on whether to authorize a strike. this comes as their current union contract is just days from expiring. amanda is live with what they're asking for. >> kumasi the local chapter of

the unite here union is calling for better wages, affordable health care and lighter workloads. the union's contract expires next wednesday. the union says the vote to authorize a strike comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations with hyatt, hilton and marriott. the vote covers housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders and bell attendants. according to unite here, the u.s. hotel industry profits were 26% higher in 2022 than in 2019. but hotel workers aren't seeing that increase in their pay as well as loss of hours. they say covid era service cuts continue to be in place, including understaffing, no daily housekeeping and not bringing back food and drink options at these hotels. the grand hyatt, hilton, union square and a handful of other hotels in san francisco would be impacted if a strike were to happen. however, the vote happening today is just to authorize a strike. it doesn't mean a strike will

actually take place. we're reaching out to those hotels that could be impacted, and we'll let you know when we get a response back to you. kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. today is the start of a busy weekend here in san francisco. not only is it the start of outside lands, but the city is also gearing up for a visit from the vice president. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live in san francisco. and, lena, you should probably expect traffic if you are driving to the city. >> yeah. kumasi. that's right. and that's really an understatement for this weekend, sfmta says they're expecting about 75,000 people each day over the next three days, just for outside lands. and on top of that, the city will also be juggling a campaign stop from vice president kamala harris and also three different giants games. now, mayor london breed says outside lands is expected to bring in a $75 million boost to the local san francisco economy this year. over the past six years, she says, the music festival has contributed $1 billion to the city's local

economy. the mayor says police will be on high alert all weekend. they have enhanced their safety plan over the years with technology. this year that includes drones. we asked breed what she thought about the convenient timing of the harris walls campaign. stop >> it's like any other city, but it is one of the most beautiful cities anywhere in the world. and when people come here and they have these great experiences, it really just uplifts our city and people take that with them. and so i think what's exciting about having our vice president come to san francisco this weekend and celebrating all these activations and fun and, and, and entertainment is people are working really hard and doing what they need to do to make ends meet. >> now, there has been some speculation of folks wondering if vice president harris might also make a stop at outside lands to connect with younger voters, since she will be attending a fundraiser in san

students got in trouble for having their phone on them. that trend may continue. the governor is working to restrict phones in schools statewide. new details on last months hill bomb at dolores park. our partners at the san francisco standard have learned the san francisco police department spent nearly $250,000 on overtime for this event. police worked extra hours to set up barricades on dolores street and brought in extra officers to prevent the hill bomb that didn't work. skaters ended up moving over a block and still went speeding down the hill. last year's hill bomb ended with dozens of arrests and a muni bus being vandalized. >> this morning, we're tracking what's left of hurricane debbie. it's now a tropical storm as it moves up the east coast. earlier this morning, authorities announced an eighth death is being blamed on the storm. debbie made landfall in south carolina yesterday. the storm has caused serious flooding and spawned tornadoes in multiple states. debbie is expected to move through pennsylvania and upstate new york today.
