overnight remnants of debby drenching the mid-atlantic and appalachian. at least six reported tornados in the last 24 hours. in maryland, storms uprooting trees in montgomery county. one of those trees smashing into this home in potomac, displacing a family of six. >> i saw the trees in my living room. it could have hit me. that's why my wife was shaking because she thought a tree had fallen on top of me. >> reporter: meanwhile, near wilmington delaware the national weather service confirming a tornado. >> there were damage to houses, trees down, power lines down. >> ginger: more than half foot of rain fell really fast. first responders had to rescue people from water that was too high to drive through. >> it was really deep and rushing. i was sitting here waiting. >> ginger: debby taking the lives of at least seven people, incluing one in north carolina early thursday. victor oquendo was there. >> several homes taking a direct hit from debby.

the homeowner here, likely asleep in his bedroom when a tornado hit. the house so badly damaged, first responders had to stablize it. sadly, that homeowner did not survive. >> ginger: there were still high water rescues happening in south carolina in charleston. that's where the tail end is still around. but we've got it up into pennsylvania, new york already. so those flood alerts are out. significant flash flood threat. the timing goes like this. it will move through, with a tornado watch this morn. you could see tornados throughout the mid-atlantic and new jersey. trenton watch out for that. burlington vermont tonight. we're going to get gusty, windy, rainy tonight and be done with debby finally by tomorrow afternoon. rebecca. >> rebecca: finally putting debby behind us. all right, ginger. thank you. we turn now to the race for the white house. former president trump saying he has agreed to an offer from abc news to debate vice president harris in september. our senior white house

correspondent selina wang is in washington with more. good morning, selina. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. it is finally official. harris and trump have agreed to debate on abc news next month. trump making that announcement from his home. while harris and her new running mate have been blitzing through battleground states. this morning donald trump agreeing to face off with kamala harris in a primetime debate on abc next month. the debate trump agreed to when president biden was still in the race, despite waffling on his commitment the last few weeks when harris ascended to the top of the ticket. >> i just look forward to these debates. i think it's very important that we have them. >> reporter: during a more than one hour long press conference, trump repeating false and misleading statements, including the vice president's intelligence, criticizing her press availability. >> she's not doing any news conference. >> reporter: and challenging her to accept two other two posed

debates. >> i think they will be very revealing. >> i'm looking forward to it and hope he shows up. >> reporter: not willing to commit to any other debates until after that first one. the harris campaign still riding high on the jolt of enthusiasm. a new poll from marquette university law school showing harris leading trump by six points in a head to head matchup among likely voters. 53% to 47%. margin of error of 4.7%. but this race will be decided in the battlegrounds. swing state wisconsin, the marquette poll shows harris and trump in a dead heat. harris and walz still blitzing through battleground states, stopping by a union hall near detroit. >> we believe in the collective. we're not falling for these folks who are trying to divide us, trying to separate us. trying to pull us apart. that's not where the strength lies. >> reporter: a campaign official tells me that the vice president will not agree to that fox news debate on september 4th saying that any future debate hinges on trump actually showing up to the abc news news event on september 10th. trump finally today getting back on the campaign trail, holding a rally tonight in montana, which is a reliably red state. >> deborah: all right. we'll see what happens. thank you. now new body cam video on the attempted assassination on former president trump last month. newly released videos showing police trying to stop the gun man moments before shots rang out. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with more. good morning. >> good morning. this is the first time we're seeing what police officers saw last month in butler, pennsylvania, during the attempt on former president trump's life. you'll be able to see when the chaos subsided, the officers were left with the same questions we've all been asking. >> this close, bro. >> where's he at? >> straight up!

>> reporter: this is the butler police officer who first confronted the gun man, moments before he opened fire on former president trump. the officer hoisted to the roof, sees the shooter and falls to the ground. >> right where you picked me up, bro. he was on that left side. >> reporter: he calls out directions and cautions officers racing to the roof top. >> he's laying down, book bag next to him. >> reporter: as more police run in, the same officer is hoisted up again. >> ready? ready. let's go. >> reporter: once on the roof, it's evident the shooter, thomas crooks, is dead. >> one in custody. agr building south roof top. >> reporter: butler county released the footage in response to public records requests from news organizations, including abc news. >> how did he get up? >> i don't know. >> were you committed? >> i have no idea. >> reporter: secret service agent is seen staring at this gray shed and expandible ladder as officers vent their

frustration. how a gun man made to it a roof top 400 feet from the former president, leaving the officers bewildered. you can see from the footage, whit, it was clear from the first moments after the shots were fired, this was a security failure. it has already cost the director of the secreter is service her job. whit? >> whit: sure was. aaron katersky for us. thank you. this morning an investigation is under way after a tragic death at the cross fit games in texas. an athlete drowning during a swimming competition. mireya villarreal has the story. >> reporter: this morning cross fit says they are cooperating with authorities after an athlete died during their annual cross fit games competition in ft. worth, texas. >> we want to do everything we can to support the community, to support the family. >> reporter: authorities identifying the victim as lazar

yukic from serbia. 28-year-old was near the end of the event's swimming portion in marine creek lake when he went under. >> i saw him start to scramble. he started doing small turns. he was trying to get his head out of the water. it was at that time that we started screaming to the life guard like, he needs help. then within seconds he was under and he never came back up. >> reporter: the ceo says a safety plan and staff were in place at the time, and that cross fit is cooperating with authorities in their investigation. >> we had our dive teams come out. we had our arson investigators come out with their drones. we were ultimately able to bring that body out of the water. >> reporter: the grueling competition is a days long triathlon style event that involves intense weight lifting, a 3.5 hour run and an 800 meter swim attracting athletes from all over the world. >> all right, lazarus through the bar first.

>> reporter: his friend says he devoted his life to fighting and competing. >> such short notice and such a great character, such a fit person that is pulled away from us in such a devastating way, it's kind of hard to grasp. >> reporter: now a cross fit representative tells us they did have a safety plan and people in place. yesterday they cancelled all of their activities and their events. but in a newly released staple this morning, cross fit said they are encouraging their athletes to grieve together as a community and compete hard. the games are back on for 10 a.m. this morning. they are going to be dedicated to lazar. rebecca? >> rebecca: and we are thinking about his family and that community this morning. okay, mireya. thank you. we turn to promising signs for our economy. a surprisingly strong weekly report on jobs sending stocks soaring while mortgage rates and gas prices are falling. erielle reshef is on wall street with those details.

good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning, rebecca. wall street whiplash this week as stocks surged to their highest levels since 2022 on thursday after that massive nose dive on monday. that jump coming on the news of better than expected unemployment numbers that helped ease fears of a weakening jobs market and boost investor confidence in the economy as a hole. here's an encouraging sign. mortgage rates hit their lowest level in more than a year, now hovering at more than 6.5%. everything relative there. this drop comes ahead of the fed's expected rate cut that could come next month. a bit of other good news, gas prices are also their lowest since they've been in a couple of months. take a look here, the average price per gallon at $3.45, that's down about $0.37 since this time last year. now all eyes on the inflation report, which is set to be released next week. whit? >> whit: erielle reshef for us. thank you. now summer games and the role covid is playing in paris. noah lyles settling for bronze in the 200 meter sprint, then revealing he'd tested positive

for the virus. janai norman is in paris. this was a real stunner. good morning. >> janai: it really was, whit. good morning to you. this is really the beginning of a nerve-racking run for americans, quite literally. noah lyles after inching out first in the the 100 meter race, was looking for the sprint double gold in the 200 meter, but after the race, instead of seeing him triumphant, we saw him being treated by medical staff. and then that heart pounding, near upset of a basketball game. a dramatic night on the track. noah lyles, favored to win the men's 200 meter, coming up short, in third place, for the bronze. after the race, medal staff racing to a clearly winded lyles, taking him off the track in a wheelchair. moments later, the surprise

announcement from the 27-year-old who was seen wearing a mask just before the race, announcing he'd tested positive for covid after falling ill on tuesday, two days before the race. overnight lyles, who was expected to compete today in the men's 4x100 meter relay, taking to instagram to address his future at this year's olympic games writing, i believe this will be the end of my 2024 olympics. whether you were rooting for me or against me, you have to admit you watched, didn't you? see you next time. in a statement, usa track and field stood by lyles' decision to compete, saying they had adhered to the guidelines set by the u.s. olympic committee, the centers for disease control and ioc to prioritize his health, the well-being of our team and the safety of fellow competitors. lyles' teammate, who took home the silver, appeared to agree with the decision to let him compete. >> i don't think i was put at risk at all. i take care of my body, so when

arrested, too. >> reporter: yeah, whit, exactly. austrian authorities are telling the ap they are scrutinizing the networks of all three of these suspects, evaluating physical and electronic evidence. guys, this investigation is happening with less than a week to go until taylor swift is set to take the stage right here at wembley stadium in london performing to an estimated half million people over five nights. there are growing concerns about how to keep all of these fans safe. >> oh, hi! >> reporter: this morning a third arrest made in connection to the alleged terror plot against taylor swift's concert in vienna. police say an 18-year-old iraqi citizen was taken into custody after allegedly being in contact with the suspect. authorities releasing this photo of the suspect seen here with his face blurred wearing an isis flag and holding machetes. he confessed to planning a suicide attack using knives or explosive devices he made after becoming radicalized online. a suspected accomplish, a 17-year-old austrian, was also arrested near the stadium, where he had just taken a job.

inspiring young girls all around the world. janai norman is out there again for us in paris. i love the new nickname, janai. >> janai: right? i have taken a couple triple expressos here because of the time difference. whit, i know a girl dad like yourself will love this. we have really seen a surge of support for women's sports back in the states. we're now seeing the hard work of those athletes pay off here in paris. of the 10,500 athletes from all over the world, for the first time 50% are women and 50% are women. but the american women are the ones holding their own when it comes to bringing home hardware. from the gymnastics floor to the track, the pool and beyond, team usa's 315 women athletes are a tour de force on their quest for olympic glory, bringing in more than half of the medals so far. this marks the fourth consecutive olympics games that the women stand to bring home more hardware than the men. a monumental feat, as these games also mark a first for full gender parity at the olympics. katie moon bringing home silver

to match her tokyo gold medal, knows firsthand what creating this opportunity means for these dynamic athletes. how does that feel, to be a part of that minute in olympic history? >> it feels great. pole vaulting had only been in the olympics since 2000. i started in 2004 and i had to push to try it. >> janai: the moment not lost on cycling's unsuspecting super star and now two time gold medallist kristen faulkner who became the first american woman to win gold in the cycling road race after taking up her sport just six years ago. >> women can do anything, you know? i am still wrapping my head around it. it hasn't fully sunk in. it's just a culmination of a big dream and a lot of work.

the team captain describing hayes' calmness and steadiness that she says seeps into the group. and they are looking to take home the gold for sure, guys. >> deborah: i love the sisterhood. all right, janai, thanks so much. well now to a gma health alert. a preliminary study from cleveland clinic suggesting a possible risk that a popular sugar substitute could raise the chan of a cardiovascular event like heart attack or stroke. our medical correspondent dr. sutton is here with more. lot of folks will be paying attention to this. tell us about the study. >> paying attention closely because these sugar substitutes are used in so many popular products. when you think of thins like keto ice cream, protein bars. there was a small study, important results. they gave some participants a sugar substitute. compared to others they gave glucose or regular sugar. after eating it, they found that those who had the erythritol had higher levels in their blood. they also saw something

important. key component of blood clot formation. that's important because prior studies of sugar substitutes to heart attacks and strokes but there are three important things to consider here. number one prior studies are often observational. looking at people ingesting a lot of sugar substitutes. to manage their weight, diabetes. those conditions bring their own risk. also that is something that's naturally created in our body. lastly, most importantly, the dose is important. the number of risk for erythritol was given three times more, a full pint of ice cream. that's a lot more than recommended. >> deborah: what was that all about? >> so that classification class 2b. this is a list of things that could possibly be associated with cancer. class one is the most serious. that's, for example, smoking. class 2b includes a variety of products. really what that means is more data needs to be done and there's no formal conclusion. >> deborah: is there a safe

amount? a lot of people do rely on sugar substitutes? >> safe level is less than equivalent of less than 10 to 14 cans of diet soda a day. if you are getting to that limit, we have a lot to talk about. moderation is key. if you're looking for options, whole foods win always over processed foods. you can look for plant derived sweeteners that might be easier to digest. >> deborah: i tend to do old fashion sugar. just do less of it. >> i do the same. >> deborah: i don't know. you're the doctor. dr. sutton, thank you very much. >> of course. >> whit: now inside the ultimate disney fan experience, d23. rebecca got an inside scoop from the ceo of our parent company, disney. your co-anchor still there in the mix with you. >> it's interesting that here we are as adults remembering that first film and it was a disney film. your daughter will have the same, i think the same memory. every single transaction that this company experiences emanates from great creativity and great story telling. it all starts right there. when i return to the company in 2022, it was very clear to me that we had to put creativity back to basically the center of this company. >> rebecca: so what does the future hold? how do you think about the incorporation of things like ai and animatronics? >> i think it's really important in a world where technology divides people with these visual experiences that are stunning in many ways and look real. i think we have to remember that the experience of coming to one of our parks is an immersive experience in a physical

environment. reality here is reality is real. i think that's important. i don't want to lose that. but we also know that new generations of people in our world grow up with these incredible and stunning visual images. so you have to deliver on that expectation, too. >> rebecca: they're everywhere, by the way. >> hi, bob! >> how are you all? >> rebecca: the way we are getting our content is changing. what the consumer is expecting out of all of it is starting to change. how do you navigate that, as the ceo? >> well, i started at abc 50 years ago. so i have been in the entertainment business in some form or another for five decades. and over that period of time, almost everything has changed. one thing has not changed. and that is the importance of and the power of storytelling. and the need for people and the want of people to be entertained.
