dollars and years in the making. a major link for bay area commuters taking a giant leap into the future this weekend. thanks for joining us i'm j.r stone. we're getting an inside look tonight as caltrain debuts. its cutting edge electric fleet. the new trains represent a landmark shift towards faster, cleaner public transit, helping to fight climate change and build a better bay area. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has reaction from the first riders of the new fleet. >> three two nancy pelosi and governor gavin newsom cutting the ribbon on a new, faster, cleaner commute. caltrain powering up and showing off its new electric fleet of trains on board the $2 billion electrification project has been decades in the making. it ditches diesel powered trains for a sleeker, greener fleet. this is the most transformative

project of its type in a generation. don't forget that. i know it's almost become norm. it's almost become facts. it's almost part of the expectation. the dna in california, this shift towards electrification, low carbon green growth, it's quiet. >> it's clean, it's safe. it's faster. >> this caltrain video shows an electric train on the left outrunning its diesel predecessor. the railroad says new trains shave about six minutes off the express ride between san francisco and san jose, making the trip in about an hour. >> it's about quality of life, quality of life for families. they don't have to spend so much time in cars. >> saturday, vips took a ride from san francisco to millbrae, the first train to carry passengers used to work out here. >> so did the commute from sunnyvale over here, and this is a major upgrade. i'm really glad we're going in the way of electric with such a smooth rid. >> beautiful new seats, beautiful bathrooms, wi-fi, amazing.

>> starting on sunday, the public gets to ride caltrain says the fleet will be fully electric by next month in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> cornell. thanks so much. take a look at this. the san francisco fire department says these flames were quickly extinguished at the us bank on castro street. that's right next door to the castro theater. fire department shared this video. firefighters say the fire started just before four, and they were able to keep it from spreading to the historic landmark. no injuries were reported. investigators are trying to determine the cause. new developments tonight in the fallout from local pro-palestinian protests. 26 people are now facing criminal charges for shutting down the golden gate bridge. san francisco da brooke jenkins issued arrest warrants for the group this morning. they face charges including false imprisonment, conspiracy, trespassing and more. jenkins says eight of the protesters, believed to be involved in the planning of the demonstration,

are facing felony charges. the protests shut down the golden gate bridge for hours back in april. jenkins says her office heard from three dozen people who were trapped for hours, including a person with a brain tumor who missed a medical appointment and a mom with her baby who had no water for formula. >> we need to make sure that when we advocate, when we engage in our free speech rights, that we're doing it in a safe manner. we cannot obstruct people's ability to of movement, certainly not for hours at a time. >> jenkins says the protest likely cost the bridge $162,000 in lost revenue. the protesters must surrender by monday on the same day as the golden gate bridge protest. other groups of protesters stopped traffic at different points on 8-80 in oakland. they were targeting trucking routes, trying to create economic disruptions in protest of u.s. support for israel. it's up to alameda

shattering july $310 million raised last month alone and sunday's event will add plenty more tomorrow. harris is scheduled to appear along with her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, at a fundraiser in san francisco at the fairmont hotel. she's set to deliver remarks just before noon. tickets start at $3,300 per guest and experience that includes a photo with harris, cost $50,000. a half $1 million gets you at the head table with vice president harris. california democratic senator alex padilla says she would make a great president as a californian. >> couldn't be more proud, couldn't be more excited than the prospects of a president harris. i'm all in. >> former san francisco mayor willie brown says he will be at the fundraiser. he says harris should use this hometown visit to make herself more relatable. >> make yourself in such a way that you become an ordinary

person, not some kind of a celebrity that's avoided being responsive. >> after the event, the vice president is scheduled to fly back to washington, dc tomorrow morning. former president trump is attending fundraisers today in mountain resort towns in wyoming and colorado. his campaign is claiming they were hacked by foreign sources. campaign is citing a report by microsoft on a phishing scheme targeting a high ranking official. microsoft has not confirmed that the trump campaign was the target of the hack, nor has abc news. the tech world is remembering and honoring the life of former youtube ceo susan wojcicki. her husband confirmed her death in a facebook post, saying she lived with non-small cell lung cancer for two years. wojcicki was 56. the santa clara county native was one of the first google employees. google ceo sundar

pichai posted a tribute on x, writing in part she is as core to the history of google as anyone, and it's hard to imagine the world without her former coo of facebook and google executive sheryl sandberg posted on instagram. she was committed to expanding opportunities for women throughout silicon valley. i don't believe my career would be what it is today without her unwavering support. a san francisco institution that's delighted customers for more than seven decades looks a little different today. plywood covers the big plate glass window in front of mitchell's ice cream on san jose avenue after burglars smashed their way inside yesterday morning. surveillance video captured the break in at 330 friday morning. co-owner linda mitchell says the crew failed to snap off a big padlock on the front door, so they used bolt cutters to bash their way into the ice cream

shop. once inside, the burglars went straight for the money, so they went in through the window, went to the back, tried to steal the safe which is bolted down, and they really left with nothing except a bag of cookies. >> so wow. >> mitchell believes it will cost $5,000 to replace the big front window. the ice cream shop remains open despite the burglary. police tell us no arrests have been made the music there? day two of the festival. outside lands in golden gate park is underway. right now. there is no shortage of excitement for fans. as you see in this video, the rise to fame pop star sabrina carpenter is tonight's headliner. 75,000 people are expected to attend each day of the festival thanks to outside lands. it will be a packed weekend on public transit in san francisco. the head of

the sfmta says weekends are actually a huge part of their post-pandemic recovery. at a board meeting this week, director jeffrey tumlin talked about how ridership is shifting dramatically from weekday commutes to weekends. tumlin says downtown rail ridership is at about 55% of pre-covid levels, but certain bus lines like the 49 down van ness and the 22 on fillmore are seeing huge surges 140% of pre-covid levels, tumlin says. on weekends, that surge hits 200%. as a result, the sfmta is adjusting schedules every 4 to 6 months, trying to support weekend demand. >> as far as i know, we're the only agency in the country that is making this frequent of complete rebuilding of our schedule, chasing the data and the changing travel patterns. >> tumlin says. they're trying to prioritize evenings, weekdays

thursday. feature on lake powell was formed from sandstone dating back 190 million years. national park service says changing water levels driven by drought in the west probably contributed to the collapse. joined right now by spencer christian. i was deep in solano county earlier. it was 90 degrees. i said. i got to get back to san francisco in the mid 60s. >> exactly. and now it's in the lower 60s, probably down to about 61. wow. it is still up to around 90. some of our warmer inland locations, though, but that pattern won't be with us very long. here's a look at what's going on in the satellite radar composite image. we have an onshore flow. we've got clouds have been advancing and retreating and advancing and retreating. they'll make another advance later tonight, but we still have the breezy conditions with surface wind speeds up to almost 30mph here in san francisco right now, and up to about 18 19mph in many other locations. and it is several degrees warmer around the bay area than it was at this time yesterday. that doesn't necessarily mean a warming trend is coming our way. the cooling

will kick in tonight and it will be cooler tomorrow. right now it's 63 degrees here in san francisco, 67 in oakland, hayward, 68 8-80 san jose, 84 redwood city and 59 at half moon bay. and we have some low clouds at the golden gate earlier. they have lifted for a while. so let's take a look at our overnight conditions. coastal low clouds and drizzle will be with us once again. then tomorrow it'll be breezy and even breezier than now and much cooler than today. and early next week we'll have this cooler pattern continuing, perhaps more than just into early next week, maybe even to the end of next week. but for tonight, this is what we can expect that continuing onshore flow, there'll be some high clouds moving over before the low clouds redevelop at the coastline, and advance locally across the bay and locally inland. there'll be patches of drizzle along the coastline and some of it will move on shore, but it won't be very widespread now. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s, a little bit milder in some of our farther inland locations like antioch, which will have a low of 66, and down in the south bay, san jose, a

low of 62 degrees. and then tomorrow, bright sunshine in most places away from the bay, away from the coast. i should say, with high temperatures ranging from about 65 in san francisco to 69 across the bay at oakland, many locations around the bay shoreline tomorrow will have bright skies, but with a few lingering clouds, so we'll call it partly cloudy to mostly sunny, certainly sunny inland tomorrow with high temperatures the highest in the mid to upper 80s tomorrow. now on monday we'll see a similar pattern. not much change in the high temperature range, so the cooling that starts tomorrow will certainly continue into early next week. tuesday pretty much the same pattern as well. mid or mid to upper 80s inland. we might see a couple of locations topping out at 90 or 91 on wednesday, but still there's no major warm up coming our way. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we get to the middle of the week wednesday, thursday, maybe some in the locations we'll reach 90 degrees. nothing higher than that. so it'll be a nice mild, cool to mild week ahead all the way into next weekend. >> today the gold medal game for team usa men's basketball with
