gymnast jordan chiles. what we've just learned coming up. >> rachel: and parents and teens are getting ready to start the college application process. we'll check in with an educational planner for details on what you need to know. >> gio: but we do begin here with the race for the white house, of course, as both candidates focus on the west this weekend. vice president kamala harris holding a campaign rally in las vegas last night. that's where we find zohreen shah, and zohreen, she introduced some new policies there last night. >> reporter: gio, she did, but first, trump had been ramping up pressure for harris to face reporters. hours ago she did. trump is still slamming harris saying that she copied one of his policies. this morning, vice president kamala harris proposing to eliminate taxes on tips during her las vegas rally hours after the powerful culinary union endorsed her. >> when i am president, we will continue our fight for working families of america. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: trump slamming harris saying she copied my no taxes on tips policy. vice president harris on saturday also dodging tough

questions about the biden administration's involvement in the israel/gaza war amid recent israeli air strikes. >> we need a hostage deal and we need a cease-fire. >> reporter: the 12,000-person political rally, a culmination of a five-day rollout tour with harris' vice presidential running mate, minnesota governor tim walz. ♪ many attendees energized with the shakeup on the democratic party ticket. >> would you be here if the ticket hadn't changed? >> no. i probably would not be here. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump attending fund-raisers in wyoming and colorado, his last swing state event eight days ago in atlanta, georgia. his vice president nominee, jd vance, continuing to slam harris' vp pick, tim walz, who left the military after earning the highest enlisted rank for his unit, but right before his unit could have been sent to war. >> it doesn't make sense for us to fight over each other and talk or comment about each other's service. >> reporter: walz appearing to use the attacks launched on him on trump.

>> donald trump knows nothing about service. it's pretty hard to provide service to others when you're too busy looking out for only yourself. >> reporter: trump has not announced any public events today. meanwhile, kamala harris will be heading to san francisco for a fund-raiser there. nancy pelosi is expected to speak. the dnc is just one week away, gio. >> gio: and zohreen, while we have you here, the trump campaign says that some of its internal communications were hacked. what do we know here? >> reporter: yeah. the trump campaign is claiming that foreign sources hacked them. this is based on a microsoft report that came out on friday that says back in june, a group run by iranian intelligence officials sent a spear phishing email to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign. we asked microsoft about those details, but the company would not go beyond its report or say which campaign, and the trump campaign hasn't provided more details either.

the microsoft report says the company had been tracking attempts from bad actors and foreign entities to interfere in the u.s. election. national security officials have been warning of threats. gio? >> gio: all right, zohreen shah there in las vegas, thank you so much. whit? >> whit: all right, gio. for more on the campaign, let's bring in abc's chief washington correspondent, jon karl, who will be hosting "this week" later on this morning. jon, good morning to you. always great to have you. you interviewed jd vance and asked him about whether trump believes that he's ready on day one. let's take a look. >> most people, 99% of the country, they don't vote on who the vice presidential nominee -- they're voting for donald trump or for kamala harris, not for jd or tim walz, right? but what i think he does believe is, because he made it the main focus of his vetting process, do i think this person could be president on day one if god forbid something happens? yes. i'm sure donald trump is confident in my abilities. i also think that he's right, that the politics don't really matter that much. >> whit: jon, will that satisfy those who have been questioning his readiness? >> jonathan: well, look.

i think what's notable here, whit, is that jd vance there was answering a question that donald trump himself did not answer, because donald trump was asked directly, do you believe jd vance is ready to take over on day one if necessary? he didn't answer. instead, went on to say the vice presidential running mate doesn't matter, and as far as whether or not voters are satisfied with the answer, the bigger issue jd vance faces is some of the more controversial statements and positions he has taken over time, and as you will hear in this interview, we ask him very directly about some of the statements he has made over the recent last few years that have taken considerable blowback in this campaign. >> whit: and jon, how the dynamics of this race changed since harris and governor walz teamed up on the democratic ticket? >> jonathan: this is a whole new race. and this is why you see the frustration coming from donald trump. he was running against a joe

biden that frankly wasn't really taking the campaign to donald trump, somebody who had big issues regarding his age, the energy of his campaign, and all of that. now you see an entirely energized democratic ticket. we'll see if they can maintain that energy, but right now the momentum seems to me to be clearly in harris' favor, and we saw some polling over the weekend that shows that as well. "the new york times" survey of three key battleground states shows harris with a lead of about 4%. if you looked just, you know, three weeks ago, you would have seen the reverse. you would have seen donald trump with a lead in all of those states. >> whit: all right, jon karl for us, thank you so much. we appreciate it, and remember to tune into "this week" later this morning. more of jon's interview with republican vice presidential nominee, jd vance. plus, jon speaks exclusively with senator amy klobuchar of minnesota after her state's governor tim walz became vice president harris' running mate, and jon checks in with influential radio host charlamagne tha god about the state of the race. >> gio: we go overseas now to

the middle east and this israeli air strike being used as a shelter. palestinian ministry says 90 people have been killed. tom soufi burridge is with us. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, gio. it's one of the deadliest attacks. scores of civilians dead. the idf saying it killed 19 militants, and it comes ahead of an important week with the u.s. hoping to revive talks for a cease-fire and hostage deal. this morning, the white house expressing deep concern after the israeli military struck a school in gaza city housing hundreds of displaced families. at least 90 people killed according to gaza's hamas-run civil defense. first responders recovering the dead. the aftermath of the attack inside that school, a chaotic scene. many of the images too graphic to show. families saying they were asleep here before three heavy explosions. scores of injured taken to local

hospitals. little ira and her siblings burnt by the blast. "we just want this war to end," she says. we spoke to a doctor at a local hospital. how horrific a scene has it been in your hospital today? >> uncomparable. it's the worst thing you can ever see in your life. >> reporter: the idf saying they eliminated at least 19 terrorists who were carrying out attacks inside the school compound, adding it used a small warhead, aerial surveillance, and intelligence to, quote, mitigate the risk of harming civilians, but the white house demanding further details from israel saying the attack underscores the urgency of a cease-fire and hostage deal. and guys, those cease-fire talks scheduled for thursday. all of this happening, of course, amid the threat of retaliatory attacks from

hezbollah and iran for two assassinations in beirut and tehran. this morning, iran doubling down on its commitment to respond against israel. president biden asked for his message to iran. the president giving a one-word answer, don't. rachel? >> rachel: stark warning. tom soufi burridge on those tensions rising in the middle east. tom, thank you. we turn now to an urgent investigation into homemade bombs found in hawaii. one of those bombs going off damaging a passing car, blowing out its windows. abc's melissa adan has more on the warning from the fbi and the search for a suspect. good morning, melissa. >> reporter: good morning, rachel. there's a mystery on maui. police there finding a series of what appear to be homemade bombs across maui, and now the fbi is asking for people on the island to report anyone seen leaving behind suspicious objects. this morning, an urgent warning from the fbi and maui police asking the public for help after reports of improvised explosive devices on the island. listen closely to this home security video in upcountry maui. investigators say that explosion

is an ied, detonated next to a trash can. >> i thought it was going to be lightning and thunder, but when i heard this, i was, like, oh, no. like, that did not sound good. >> reporter: jess weatherholt rushing to the scene, finding this passenger car with a blown-out window and punctured doors. officers arriving on scene finding the driver shaken, but okay. >> she was sobbing. she was shaking. she was, like, pretty, like, incoherent. >> guys, stay away from that object right over there. >> reporter: the device currently under forensic examination. this after officials say they have found several of these ieds appearing to be homemade and concealed in makeshift baskets across the hawaiian island. now the fbi is working with forensic teams to figure out how these bombs were made and what causes them to detonate. as they urge people on maui to be on the lookout. rachel? >> rachel: just terrifying moments. melissa, thank you. gio?

>> gio: all right, rachel, we turn now to the fda approving a new nasal medicine to treat emergency allergic reactions. let's bring in dr. darien sutton. good to see you. >> dr. darien: good morning. >> gio: we're always talking about the epipen, but now we're talking about a nasal spray. >> dr. darien: this is a needle-free option to treat anaphylaxis, the most common cause. the best outcomes for patients are those who get early treatment, specifically treatment at home, but many go without it, whether it be they're fearful of needles or use those epipens incorrectly. this new innovation helps reduce those barriers to treatment. >> gio: this is pretty major. but this is still a drug. so there are side effects. >> dr. darien: there are. and they mostly include side effects you would expect. we're talking about nausea, vomiting, headache, and often

nasal irritation, but it seems that those are mild and minimal, thankfully. >> gio: so, do we know when this will actually hit shelves? a lot of people are looking at that. >> dr. darien: fda approval doesn't automatically translate to what we see on our shelves, but we could expect to see it in eight weeks. the price available for those with insurance seem to be around $25, without insurance, it can go up to $100, but there are some financial incentives and requirements where we can get it down to zero. this can reduce barriers to those in need. >> gio: and certainly some people don't even know how to use an epipen. this is a nasal spray. most people know how to use that. >> dr. darien: more than 3,000 people come into the emergency room from using the epipen incorrectly. this is a great option for those who are fearful or don't know how to use it. >> gio: dr. darien sutton, thank you so much. whit? >> whit: some hopeful news. thank you. let's turn to the weather and check in with somara theodore, and the flood alerts. they can't catch a break. >> somara: no. particularly the carolinas, whit. take a look at the past week, 10 to 23 inches of rain courtesy of

debby. we saw rain yesterday. we still have flood watches issued in green. parts of south carolina under flood warnings and those stripes and striations, that is the flood warning for rivers. okay, that's not all we're dealing with. so, look at this. rip current threat along the eastern seaboard, down into parts of the gulf. this is high along north carolina there. so i know things are warming up down south. we're dealing with immense heat. make sure you're getting in the ocean to cool down, and finally hurricane season is not over. we're, in fact, approaching upon the peak. we have a 60% chance of development for this disturbance over the next 48 hours. i want our friends and family and friends of family down in puerto rico to really be aware, hypervigilant in the coming days as we head into the middle of the week and after which, it looks like this storm will go out to sea, and it could impact bermuda as a hurricane, and it would be called -- it would be named ernesto.

to soccer to track and field, but this morning a major disappointment for american gymnast jordan chiles having to give back her medal. this morning, the international olympic committee announcing that american gymnast jordan chiles must return a bronze medal she won in the women's floor exercise. the committee upholding the decision to void a scoring appeal made by chiles' coach to get her on the podium. originally ending the floor exercise final in fifth, her coach appealed to the judges to credit a split leap that she performed in her routine. the court of association for sport adding that was four seconds too late, and that the initial finishing order should be restored putting the romanian gymnast ana barbosu back in third place. the ioc statement, they will discuss the reallocation ceremony. before the olympic decision, chiles writing, she is removing herself from social media for mental health.

teammate biles writing to her, keep your chin up, olympic champ. this as the paris summer games draw to a close as team usa makes a final push to snag gold medal's top spot. lebron james, kevin durant, and steph curry teaming up in a thrilling medal game against host country france, winning by 11 points. >> it's everything i imagined and more. we all signed up for this mission to continue the usa basketball dominance. it's more like a sense of accomplishment. >> reporter: the women's soccer team beating powerhouse brazil with a single goal late in the match from mallory swanson, the first time they've won gold since 2012. on the track, russell with a photo finish in the women's 100 meter hurdles, winning gold by one-one-hundredth of a second, and even more gold in both the men and women's 4 x 400 relay, both teams setting olympic records. breaking made its olympic debut. all eyes on l.a. 2028 set to include baseball, flag football,

and cricket. we caught up with los angeles mayor, karen bass, who will participate in the closing ceremony becoming the first ever black woman to receive the official olympic flag. >> can l.a. outdo paris? >> i know that the creative community will come together to celebrate our city, our country, and first and foremost, our athletes. >> reporter: and lots of speculation regarding that closing ceremony and the handover from paris to l.a., there's been a rumor going around that tom cruise could be part of this. he might be involved in some sort of stunt. that is all unconfirmed for the moment, and for now, all eyes on the women's basketball team. they are facing off against france later this evening. >> rachel: oh, yeah. more to come, ines. ines, look, you have been covering the summer games from the very beginning. what have been some of your favorite moments so far? >> reporter: yeah. i think just the general atmosphere here, the fact these events were being held, you know, at the foot of these iconic landmarks like the eiffel

college this year. joining us with advice, jill madenberg, author of "love the journey to college." jill, welcome. >> thank you. >> rachel: the common app seems to be the easiest way that high school students are now applying to college. what are some tips? >> there are some nuanced changes to it, and there's -- there are background and essay questions, but in terms of tips and things that you really want to do, you want to fill out the application completely. try to stay organized. don't get ahead of yourself. you want to, you know, have an email address that you used to apply to college and engage with colleges. make a list of questions that you can use to ask your school counselor. as a former school counselor, i always loved that. take your time with the finer points, the honors section, the activities section, that's like your place to shine. you really want to focus on things like that, and take advantage of the summer, you know. some of my students are going back already right now, into school, but if you -- if you try to take advantage of a soft

start over the summer, that will reduce your stress. if you focus on your college applications now, that will reduce your stress later and make for a really fun senior year. >> whit: and you touched on some of this, but more on the dos and don'ts because people can make mistakes on their applications. what should we know? >> yes. so those are some of the key dos. i feel like -- the key to this process is to stay organized and stay ahead of deadlines. way ahead of deadlines because you want to enjoy as much of this process as you possibly can. what you don't want to do is you don't want to rush. you don't want to spend too much time on details. you don't want to accidentally paste one school's supplement into another. that, i've seen it and it's not good. you really want to check college websites if you're going to be submitting testing because you want to make sure that you're following the directions of each school, and you want to make sure that your list is balanced, that you get the colleges you love. >> gio: jill, this process, it can feel so overwhelming for parents and for students.
