morning. it's sunday, august 11th. i'm zach fuentes. let's start now with a quick look at weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> okay, zach. good morning to you. hi everyone. we do have a fair amount of cloud cover around but sunny breaks as well. there's a look at some clouds streaming in from the south and west. and our marine layer intact as we go in a little bit closer. live doppler seven. you can see the clouds right around the city, across the bay over into oakland and hayward, but partly sunny conditions here in the south bay. the shark tank there where temperatures are in the mid 60s. so significantly warmer than here in the city with mount tam there and the layered clouds a bit of a breez. 54 petaluma. it is 66 with some sun in our inland valleys. air quality advisory extended through today with moderate air quality from the east bay into livermore and san jose. and once again, the smoke from the fires to the north will provide hazy conditions that sea breeze still allowing for a gusty afternoon in spots. but it's tomorrow and we'll see better air quality, so

throughout the next several hours, it's partly sunny, mainly in the 60s inland, and then by our afternoon high temperatures coming in in the mid 80s, a good ten degrees cooler inland, just about 70 or low 70s around the bay shore. and there's the fog sticking to the coast throughout the day. zach. >> lisa. thank you. now to your voice, your vote. the vice president is getting ready for a big day here in san francisco, preparing for a fundraiser expected to bring in millions of dollars for her campaign. speaker emerita nancy pelosi will be a featured speaker today. but according to the chronicle, harris's running mate, tim walz, will not be joining. today's fundraiser is expected to raise $12 million from the nearly 700 people whott everyone is enthusiastic. pro-palestinian protests are planned for later today. >> a lot of groups like the uncommitted movement and the abandoned biden movement are also really pushing her to come out with a policy platform that includes an arms embargo against israel to end the genocide in

gaza. >> yeah, the fundraiser brunch kicks off early. doors opened at 9 a.m. the protests are expected to begin at 10 a.m. now. harris pledged to work to eliminate taxes on tips paid to restaurants and other service industry employees. this is during her saturday campaign in las vegas. it echoes a similar pledge by her opponent, republican donald trump. and it's a rare moment of political overlap between the two candidates. trump is accusing harris of copying his pledge, and a spokesperson for his campaign says someone hacked the republican nominee's political operation, politico reports. it received emails from an anonymous account with documents from inside trump's campaign. the campaign spokesperson said that foreign sources hostile to the u.s. illegally obtained the documents. the campaign is citing a report by microsoft on a phishing scheme targeting a high ranking official. microsoft has not confirmed that the trump campaign was the target of the hack, and trump's running mate,

into the shop instead. and once inside, the burglars went straight for the money, so they went in through the window, went to the back, tried to steal the safe which is bolted down, and they really left with nothing except a bag of cookies. >> so mitchell believes it'll cost $5,000 to replace the big front window. >> there. the ice cream shop remains open despite the burglary. police tell us no arrests have been made. new developments in the pro-palestinian protest that shut down the golden gate bridge for hours. 26 people are now facing criminal charges in the case. san francisco da brooke jenkins issued arrest warrants for the group yesterday. they face charges including false imprisonment, conspiracy and trespassing. jenkins says eight of the protesters believed to be involved in the planning of the demonstration are facing felony charges. jenkins says her office heard from three dozen people who were trapped for hours, including a person with a brain tumor who missed a medical appointment and a mom with her

baby who had no water for formula. >> we need to make sure that when we advocate, when we engage in our free speech rights, that we're doing it in a safe manner. we cannot obstruct people's ability to of movement, certainly not for hours at a time. >> jenkins says the protests, which happened in april, will likely cost the bridge $162,000 in lost revenue. the protesters must surrender by tomorrow. new developments a jury has convicted a former antioch police officer of wire fraud and conspiracy for his role in a college degree scam. that's according to our media partners at the east bay times. prosecutors say morteza amiri paid a woman to take college courses for him. so that he could get education related pay raises. he faces up to 20 years in prison. the fbi began investigating amiri in the college scam last year. the case led to the seizure of antioch police officer phones, which led to a wider investigation, including the department's racist text message scandal. happening today. it's the last

officials say there was a sense of gas in the air. investigators say that utility workers were on scene when the explosion occurred. right now, we're hearing that workers were injured in the blast and there is at least one person dead found dead at the scene. the home next door was badly damaged, and a woman in that house was treated for injuries. the local sheriff's say there's no public threat, but of course it's a very active investigation there, right now. now, overnight in paris, a man was seen climbing the eiffel tower, prompting an evacuation hours before the olympics, closing ceremony. we have a live look from there right now, and authorities say it's not clear where he had started climbing from. but he was spotted right above the olympic rings they have in place there, right now. and the second section of the monument, more than 30,000 officers have been have been deployed around paris and beyond for the last olympic events. the closing ceremony was scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. local time. there, in their 6 p.m. hour there right now, hotel workers at eight san francisco hotels have voted to authorize a strike. a local chapter of the

unite here union is calling for better wages, affordable health care and lighter workloads. the union's contract expires wednesday, and union leaders say the vote to authorize a strike comes after months of unsuccessful negotiations with hyatt, hilton and marriott. the vote covers housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders and bell attendants. now they've only authorized the strike. it doesn't necessarily mean a strike will take place, as those negotiations continue, the dreamy coastal town of carmel by the sea is known for not having street addresses, but there's a push to change that after decades without them. a city council vote last month has decided to add street names and numbers to homes in the one square mile neighborhood. local law enforcement and fire officials told residents it's a safety issue during emergencies. they also don't get mail delivery service, so every resident has to pick up their mail from the post office. >> i just don't think it's necessary. i mean, honestly, we've lived this way for 100 years. we don't need them. >> i'm in favor of it because of

delivery issues. uber will work better. the ambulances will be able to find us. when i have a heart attack. >> an interesting topic in a very beautiful place. now in november, residents will be voting for city council members and a mayor who will determine the fate of whether to give residents addresses. well, we are getting an inside look at caltrans new cutting edge electric fleet. the new trains represent a landmark shift toward faster, cleaner public transit, helping to fight climate change and build a better bay area. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has reaction from the first riders of the new fleet. >> three two. nancy pelosi and governor gavin newsom cutting the ribbon on a new, faster, cleaner commute. caltrain powering up and showing off its new electric fleet of trains. oh the $2 billion electrification project has been decades in the making. it ditches diesel powered trains for a sleeker, greener fleet. this is the most

public gets to ride. caltrain says the fleet will be fully electric by next month in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> well, the head of the sfmta says weekends are a huge part of their post-pandemic recovery. at a board meeting this week, director jeffrey tumlin talked about how ridership is shifting dramatically from weekday commutes to weekends. tumlin says downtown rail ridership is at about 55% of pre-covid levels, but certain bus lines like the 49 down van ness and the 22 on fillmore are seeing huge surges 140% of pre-covid levels. tumlin says on weekends, that surge hits 200%. as a result, the sfmta is adjusting schedules every 4 to 6 months to try and keep up. >> as far as i know, we're the only agency in the country that is making this frequent of complete rebuilding of our schedule, chasing the data and the changing travel patterns. >> tumlin says they're trying to

prioritize evenings, weekends and even midday for their schedules because that's where they're seeing the demand. now to the latest on the park fire. cal fire says the fourth largest wildfire in california history is now 37% contained. so far, more than 429,000 acres have burned in butte, tehama, shasta and plumas counties. the fire started on july 24th, east of chico. crews say they added more containment lines with moderate fire activity yesterday, but officials say wind gusts between 20 to 25mph are forecasted this afternoon, which could challenge crews in some areas. in the sierra foothills, better weather conditions are helping firefighters fight the crosier fire, which is northeast of placerville. containment is up to 14%, and it has burned nearly 2000 acres. calfire says the flames are difficult to get to because of the steep and rugged terrain they have there. several towns remain under an evacuation order, but no buildings have been damaged or destroyed. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the forecast. we know

how important the weather conditions are when fire crews are out there fighting these blazes. >> that's right. and even though we're maintaining our onshore flow, we've got breezy winds at times. and certainly in the upper elevations where we have those grasses and things that are dried out, the brush, it really makes conditions not favorable for firefighting because the relative humidity is still quite low. when we get those breezy winds. and once again, a fire weather watch has been issued for the sierra nevada for tomorrow. that's because a system coming in from the pacific northwest will bring in some winds and even though those winds are associated with cooler air, it is still going to be quite gusty there. the breeze kicks up around the bay today, even more so on monday, but you notice the stream of high clouds moving in from the south and west. so we've got the marine layer that's going to stay put at the coast. and some high clouds from the peninsula into the south bay today, while i think we see more sun up in the north bay, we're still waiting on some clearing there. but from our east bay hills camera atop

vollmer peak, you can see how things are scattering out. and we're looking at those warmer 60s in parts of the south bay with partly sunny conditions around san jose. but it's cool over in oakland. it's getting brighter, though, for sure. 59 there, 55 half moon bay and look at the airport. it has been awfully gray here. temperatures coming down a good 4 to 8 degrees on the peninsula today was stronger winds 65 by the delta. those southwest winds have been up all morning long and will feel that cooler air filtering through throughout the day. today, 64 in livermore, with those 90s yesterday that will be gone for a little while and temperatures in the city are going to be quite cool after a pretty nice couple of weeks. it's really been, a trend of cooler conditions, which is more typical, right? coastal low clouds, some drizzle out there and you can see a little friend here on the camera today. breezy, much cooler next week. the pattern continues. we're

looking at that onshore flow to stay with us throughout each and every day. this is a look at our 24 hour forecast for our inland valleys. will slowly climb through the 70s. the next hour or so, topping off in the mid 80s around concord. and as we get through the afternoon, numbers slip off in the fog comes back into play and you can see get an idea of that extra cloud cover today. 2:00 notice from the peninsula, parts of the east bay partly cloudy, while some of the north bay is sunnier, but still the trend is for cooler conditions today. below average into your monday. the breezy winds each and every day, and then the sunshine in the afternoon with temperatures hovering near average or below. there's a look at the winds coming up into about the 30 mile an hour range. as you get through the delta there, 20 to 25 mile an hour mile an hour by the peninsula 71 san mateo, 72. palo alto, with low 80s in santa rosa today. so cooler all around the bay and coming down about 4

including a sexual assault suspect that was arrested, several auto burglary suspects that were arrested earlier this year. >> san francisco voters approved mayor breed's proposition e, allowing for the use of surveillance cameras and drones to pursue suspects. now they're first data points are out. police say these drones are working, confirming the arrests of several suspects. drones caught. >> we have a sense of urgency to make this a safe city and to do the things that the people in this city deserve, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins said. >> these videos were key to prosecute these suspects as a result of that arrest. >> and that footage, we were able to file auto burglary charges on individuals who, quite frankly, two of them are repeat offenders of crime. >> so far, sfpd only deploys the drones after receiving intel of a potential crime in progress. but the plan is to expand the use of drones in problematic areas around the city to get the

primarily the areas where you may notice that, but it's not a huge deal. it won't be impacting us in terms of breathing or air quality. it's just something that we've got in the sky due to the smoke, and it is really behind us for our monday mid 80s today, inland, about 70 around the bay and a cool forecast for the coast with low 60s. >> zach. lisa thank you. new developments, rescue teams in brazil have retrieved the remains of all 62 people who died when a plane fell from the sky yesterday. families started gathering where the crash happened in sao paulo to identify and bury their loved ones. brazil's president declared three days of mourning in response to the incident, and this terrifying video here shows the 72 twin engine turboprop falling from the sky friday. authorities say the aircraft never declared an emergency. the airline has not said what may have caused the crash. the fbi is investigating improvised explosive devices found throughout the island of maui.

an improvised explosive device could be a homemade bomb or devices that could be destructive, and one of them went off blowing out windows on a passing car. federal agents and maui police say they found several of them concealed in makeshift blankets across the island. residents have been asked to stay alert. just a few days ago, maui marked the first anniversary of the deadly wildfires that devastated the northwest coast. starting soon, all new u.s. troops will go through cognitive testing in order to more easily diagnose brain brain trauma later on. the pentagon says it will also put more distance between personnel and weapons blasts during training exercises. the overall push for brain health comes nine months after an army reservist named robert card went on a shooting rampage. rampage in maine. he killed 18 people in a post mortem study of card's brain found it was, quote, likely he had a traumatic brain injury. well, dozens of people living in rvs parked on zoo road in san francisco must be moved off that street by today. authorities began citing vehicles parked on zoo road last

week, and owners are upset, telling abc seven news they don't know where else to go. some of these vehicles at zoo road came from winston drive between lake merced and stonestown galleria, where they were parked for a long time. they were ordered to move ahead of a repaving project scheduled for next month. from the i-team, a 72 year old former bay area home depot employee is suing the retailer for age discrimination and wrongful termination. it comes after she was fired for failing to stop fraudulent purchases of about $5,000. abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> your phenomenal in every way. we are grateful to have you. >> during her seven years working as a cashier at the san ramon home depot, carlene acevedo says she won multiple awards for exceptional service, including cashier of the year in 2021. >> i loved working there, but last july, home depot fired acevedo after she rung up for fraudulent transactions, resulting in a more than $5,000 loss for home depot. i was so

upset, i just i just wanted to get out of there. i was, i was i never, never been fired before. >> acevedo says she was working alone in the garden center when a man approached her cash register with a card that had written instructions on the back to process the transaction. as cash. she rung up a purchase for a little more than $1,300. >> the card was suspicious. it was very suspicious, but i went ahead and ran it approximately 30 minutes later, she says. >> the customer returned. >> and then i knew for sure that he was targeting me because i was alone. >> acevedo says she tried to call her supervisor. the head cashier, but no one answered. >> he was demanding he wanted the transaction done as fast as possible. he got upset when i made the phone call to my manager. i was scared. >> according to her termination letter, acevedo ran three additional separate transactions as cash, this time for more than $4,000. she says she kept duplicate copies of the receipts that she took to her manager. >> four days later, i got fired.

>> the incident happened three months after pleasanton home depot lost prevention officer blake mose was shot and killed while trying to stop a theft attempt, a story acevedo was familiar with. it was devastating. >> i mean, it was sad. >> acevedo says as an employee, she received annual computer based training by home depot on what to do in the event of a shoplifting or active shooter. what were you instructed to do? >> i was instructed not to do a thing. do not approach. do not touch. do not try to, dissuade not to interfere. just let them go. >> she was doing everything she could. she asked for backup. she's making copies of the receipt. you know, she can't risk her life for merchandise. and employees are explicitly taught not to risk their life for merchandise. >> acevedo's attorney, shambaugh benton hayes, also questions the timing of her termination, according to the lawsuit. six months prior, acevedo learned a teenage new hire at the store had a starting salary of $21 an hour. acevedo, who was 70 at the time and had been working at

honored the contributions of millions of women during world war two and the roses, and they were known as they were known, worked in factories and shipyards to support the nation. while many of their brothers, fathers, and husbands were fighting abroad. the actual congressional gold medal is at the smithsonian. well, a couple outside sacramento is taking. i'm loving it to a whole new level. six years after meeting behind the counter at mcdonald's, they're about to walk down the aisle. >> we both started working at mcdonald's, and our coworkers instantly thought that abby and i would be a good match. >> joseph gomez and abby armenta say their coworkers at the restaurant in roseville set them up, turning a team bonding event into their first date. they fell in love under the golden arches, and next month, this match made in mcdonald's will be tying the knot. we're told cheeseburgers and apple pies will be on the menu at their wedding. after party. such a cute story. i love that one. all right, we got a lot more news and of course the weather coming up. let's check in with lisa. >> all right. good morning to

star mason miller with three strikeouts to finish it in the ninth. a's win one. nothing. as for pitchers combined on a two hit shutout, and that is morning sports. now back to you, j.r. >> thank you. now let's get a check of the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> all right, zack, good morning to you. live doppler seven picking up on the marine layer and some clouds moving in from the southwest. so we will have a combination of a bit of wind, some cloud cover, decreasing temperatures, and looking at a system dropping into the pacific northwest tomorrow, enhancing that marine layer. it will get pretty extensive and that will allow for the cool down. as we look at our satellite picture a little bit closer, you can see the coast point raise cloudy, the san mateo coast, half moon bay, and still some patches over the bay. but in walnut creek you can notice that the marine layer still having its presence felt there. temperatures are from the

50s to mid 60s from san jose 60. in hayward it is 63. in redwood city and from emeryville we had some 70s yesterday back into the 60s today with breezy winds picking up. it is 57 in petaluma, so pretty chilly there as well as napa and from our east bay hills. camera you can see the marine layer so coastal low clouds and drizzle. staying put today we'll look for the breezy winds and the cooler conditions from 5 to 10 degrees today. and those winds will keep things cooler throughout much of the upcoming workweek. we'll have a few minor changes with temperatures trying to come up tuesday wednesday, but overall it's a cooler pattern and this will bode well for the week ahead. it's been so hot record hot for california in the july time frame, but for august, things are beginning to calm down and cool down a bit. stopping this throughout the middle of the afternoon and you'll see more sun in the north

bay, and still those clouds streaming through from time to time. then it's back to the marine layer and breezier winds for your monday. the sierra nevada no red flag warnings, but a fire weather watch as these winds kick up throughout the day. for your monday. so the temperatures will be cooler and eventually that relative humidity coming up. so a mix of clouds and sun at times keeping it pleasant in the south bay today. cooler by about five degrees in san jose, 81 there 70s throughout parts of sunnyvale. low seconds in redwood city, palo alto. and then we've got the 60s, barely the 60s at the shoreline. so cooler, breezier today, numbers coming down about three degrees downtown, mid 60s, upper 70s for you in petaluma, about 80 calistoga. and those low 70s making a comeback for union city. but certainly cooler than it has been. and that breeze felt out into our inland valleys, where those 90s will be trimmed back into the mid 80s.

today, thrive city will host the whoop it up three by three basketball tournament. it features recreational divisions from ages eight and up, including adult divisions. if you're not playing or watching the tournament, there's throw in slam dunk contests and live entertainment. the men's pro-am division winner will have the opportunity to try out for the g league team, the santa cruz warriors. the event is happening right now and ends at 7 p.m. 31st annual piston parade kicked off in san francisco's civic center at grove and larkin, the biggest filipino american festival, is held at the end of the parade route at yerba buena gardens, where there's lots of food, shopping and entertainment, and the festival is being held again today. it's going to start at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m, so plenty of time to see that now happening tonight. a meteor shower is expected over the night sky, and california state parks are inviting people to watch it in the best conditions. starting tonight through tuesday evening, you can see the perseid meteor

shower from the comet swift-tuttle. it orbits the sun every 133 years. the state parks are allowing people to see it with open skies and minimal light pollution. they say to double check road closures, of course, before you leave, because some are closed after sunset and i know, lisa, you said that maybe some of our most local areas might not be the best spots to see that. >> that's right. you definitely need that high tech telescope. and to be far inland or at a state park, because not our time of year in august, as our marine layer. pretty generous. and we've got some higher clouds too as well today. and the low clouds will be back each and every night. the cooldown today, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees. so that keeps us below average into monday and then little change on tuesday. by the middle of the week, we could nudge up the temperatures a few degrees around the bay and inland, but will pretty much keep it at stratus quo as i like to say, where we'll get those breezy afternoon winds. and it should be pleasant if you can kind of shield yourself from some of the gaps around the bay where those
