from hezbollah saying a more significant attack against israel for the killing of one of its top commanders is coming and will be, quote, painful. michael? >> michael: all right, tom. thank you, tom. now the plane crash in brazil that killed 62 people. investigators are now reviewing the black boxes after video showed the plane as it appeared to fall out of the sky. transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with the latest on this tragedy. good morning, gio. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this was incredibly tragic and troubling. you can see that crash right there. still this morning, days later, we still don't know what happened. so many families are left grieving. over the weekend the families of the 62 people who died in that plane crash gathering together just hours after investigators recovered the black boxes. terrifying video captured the final moment. you can see the atr turbo prop

operated by a brazilian airline, spinning down. the crash hidden behind a row of trees, but we see smoke billowing after the plane crashed in a residential area. the big question now, how did it happen? >> if looking at the pictures of this airplane, literally falling, it was clear it was a stall situation. the question, is when did they get into it, in terms of altitude and why could they not get out of it? >> reporter: the plane was not that old. it flew about 14 years. some experts wonder if ice could have built up on the wings. brazilian officials had been warning of severe icing in the area. >> it is not impossible to consider a scenario where there's so much ice on the wings, building up so fast that it effectively redesigns the winds, brings the stall speed up. that could have led to this accident. keep in mind there's never just one cause. >> reporter: it may take sometime to figure out how this happened. we should tell you even though this particular plane is very popular around the world, no major u.s. airline actually flies it here.

but this is still a major crash. we need to know exactly why this plane went down, robin. >> robin: we certainly do, gio. all right. our thanks to you. now the latest on the fatal police shooting of sonya massey. the illinois county sheriff who has face mounting criticism is retiring. demarco morgan is here with the latest details. good morning to you. >> good morning to you guys. embattled county sheriff jack campbell said he's retiring at the end of the month. the announcement comes after the former deputy he helped hire, shawn grayson, shot and killed massey in her home after she called 911 for help. the sheriff saying, quote, i will not risk the community that i swore to protect. he went on to say the tragic death of sonya massey has been a heart breaking event for our community. one person truly responsible for this act is in jail, and i truly believe justice will be served through the legal process. campbell also said he has even had threats to his own life. sheriff campbell received

mounting pressure to step down after the disturbing body camera video of grayson. massey called to report a suspected prowler. in the body cam video you can see massey and grayson going back and forth in a conversation. minutes later things would take a deadly turn when massey is shot dead after removing a pot of hot water from the stove. grayson pleaded not guilty and remains behind bars. >> robin: as far as sonya massey's family is concerned, they're still grieving, still calling for justice. have they responded to the sheriff's retirement? >> they have released a statement through their attorney who basically is calling this a turning point and justice for massey saying, although the pain of her loss is still fresh, sonya's family is willing to work with the outgoing sheriff to help heal the community and achieve full justice for sonya. lot of eyes are watching this case. >> robin: her family continues to show an enormous amount of

grace. they do. george? >> george: now the white house, where the president is unveiling new policies and business practices that cost consumers time and money. elizabeth schulze has details. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a new push to try to cut down time and money that americans spend wrangling with companies over customer service. one target so called doom loops where you're stuck on the phone with an automated response or talking to a chat bot instead of an actual person. the consumer financial protection bureau plan to propose companies like banks need to let customers talk to a human representative by pressing a single button. ftc is also on the verge of finalizing a new rule that would make it easier to cancel subscriptions. if it takes you one click to sign up for a membership to a gym or app on your phone, it should take you one click to cancel it, too. similar regulation could be applied to internet and cable subscriptions. importantly these proposals are not yet finalized, so it will be months before they take effect. they could face legal challenges.

modelling taking it towards bermuda. so we're going to watch for the steering winds from that high pressure system part of the steering. also this trough that could keep most of the east coast safe from this. we could have rip currents and high surf, just as a note. wanted to mention we're not done with whatever was left of debby. this is south carolina. lot of rivers take days to reach their major flood stage. flooding is still on going there. we also have that stationary front sitting around. so flood warnings west of charleston. those are flash flood warnings. many in southeastern north carolina. you also have that flood watch still up in many of the rivers still rising. unrelated should mention oklahoma city had their wettest august day on record. more than 6.5 inches. more of that flash flood risk does come to parts of arkansas, missouri as we go through the day. i'll be talking about that coming up. >> michael: all right, ginger. thank you very much. going to turn now to the end of the summer games. before the closing ceremony, the u.s. women's basketball team had

eighth consecutive gold medal. brittney griner part of the team. griner overcome with emotion on the podium as they played the star spangled banner. and more golden moments over the weekend as the usa men's basketball team, led by steph curry, won their fifth olympic medal, also beating france. the gold medals didn't stop there. u.s. women's soccer, golden again, beating a tough brazilian team 1-0, reclaiming the top spot on the podium for the first time since 2012. and on the track both men and women winning gold in the 4x400 relay. all in record time. the women finishing with an almost four second lead on the rest of the field. we were all just saying so much

now one of the most controversial. the highest court in sports saying american gymnast jordan chile, who took home the bronze in floor exercise, must now return it. chile third medal finish happening after an inquiry into her difficulty score for this move by her coaches. the judges determining she should be awarded an extra tenth, enough to push her from fifth place to third over two romanian gist gymnasts. over the weekend the window to put in an inquiry is one minute from the end of a routine. the court saying team usa coaches took one minute and four seconds, which would mean their inquiry came too late to be considered. >> the sport of gymnastics is a subjective sport and they are humans. and humans are going to make errors. the judge made an error.

the judge missed a particular difficulty skill in her routine, did not give her full credit for it and that's where all of this started. >> lara: many fans taking to tik tok to voice their frustration. >> i thought the olympics judges were supposed to be the best. >> lara: usa gymnastics vowing to fight the decision, submitting time stamped video evidence shows chile's coach first stated her request to file an injury 47 seconds, followed by a second statement 55 seconds was originally posted. chile appearing on gma the morning after her win, still on a high, taking time to praise the romanian gymnast who had been moved to fourth place. >> there were so many emotions, so many things going through my mind when i found out i got that bronze medal. i couldn't be more proud of myself. she's an amazing athlete. she's done amazing things within her gymnastics as well. so i'm very proud of myself, but

>> reporter: in a field traditionally run by men, wojcicki was a tech industry pioneer. in 1998 she leased her garage near stanford to sergei brynn and larry page as they built google. >> the goal of the company is we ultimately offer service that can answer any questions that you have. >> reporter: wojcicki became employee number 16 at google, where she was in charge of marketing and helped design the company's logo. google later acquired video sharing startup you tube at wojcicki's urging. she was named ceo of you tube in 2014, a position she held until last year when she announced in a blog post she'd be stepping down to focus on family, health and personal projects. while wojcicki kept her cancer diagnosis private, nonsmall cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer, particularly prevalent in adults over 70. prognosis depends on how early the cancer is found and if it has spread outside of the lungs

>> michael: we're back now with an abc news exclusive. we're hearing from the woman who helped save graceland after an alleged plot to try to steal the mansion earlier this year. eva pilgrim has the story for us. >> good morning, michael. it's a bay bizarre and unsolved mystery. now that woman whose testimony it is believed helped the judge decide to halt the sale of graceland is telling hrer story in hopes she says of getting the people behind the plot to face the music.

foreclosure averted. one of the most famous estates in america, graceland, the beloved memphis home of elvis, almost auctioned off to the highest bidder if not for this woman. >> you think, oh, this is a joke. am i being punked? >> reporter: she has never been to graceland, lives some 800 miles away in daytona beach, florida. >> i said, what is this about? they go, your notary was used in a document where somebody put it up for collateral. i said was it about a car? >> reporter: kim had been a notary for nearly 30 years. she worked in car dealerships and for the county, notarizing car tags and titles. she never expected a phone call by an investigator working for the presley family. >> do you know lisa marie presley? that's what they asked me. i thought it was funny. i said the lisa marie presley? they go, yeah. >> reporter: what kim didn't know, that question critical to

the family of presley. a company being referred to in court papers as naussany investments claimed that years before her death, lisa marie used the deed as collateral for a loan and never paid it back so they were planning to auction graceland off to recoup the alleged loan. but kim swore in an affidavit she never met lisa marie and didn't no tar rise the paperwork. when you saw the signature, what about it stood out to you? >> that it looks absolutely nothing like my signature. >> reporter: what's more, she said the notary stamp was different than her real stamp and the alleged loan company said the notary public who signed the loan papers for lisa marie did so with her in person. so just to be clear, you've never met lisa marie presley? >> no. >> reporter: you didn't sign anything for lisa marie? >> no. >> reporter: lawyers rushed into court to stop the sale of graceland.

a judge calling it off pending further review. the case now under federal investigation for possible wire and mail fraud. do you feel in some ways like you saved graceland? >> if they couldn't get in touch with me, what would have happened? or if i said i didn't notarize it, what would they have done? >> reporter: kim's life, she says, has been up ended with all the attention, her phone ringing off the hook, people knocking on her door, and even some accusing her of being in on the alleged scam. do you feel like you were a victim in this? >> absolutely i was. >> reporter: do you want someone held accountable for it? >> yes, do i. 'cause i want to know the answer. how did you get my name? >> reporter: that's the million dollar question? >> yes, i know. >> reporter: and the alleged loan company did not respond to questions from abc news but filed a response in court disputing the pr se

harris' campaign rallies falsely suggesting that she's using ai, artificial intelligence, to create images of fake crowds. now, the reality is that is not true. in fact, there were thousands of people there. senior adviser to the harris campaign saying these are not just rantings from the internet, that the author could have the nuclear code and be responsible for decisions that could affect is all for decades. trump is still on solid ground when it comes to the economy and immigration. i have heard from a number of republicans. it's that reason they want trump to focus more on the issues and his messages and future if he gets reelected versus these attacks on harris. >> george: it's hard to explain why he's doing what he's doing instead. thank you very much. michael? >> michael: all right. thank you, george. now a new alternative for people at risk for severe allergic reactions to things like peanuts and bug bites. the first drug for allergy treatment. erielle reshef is here with

project what they will look like in 2050. the numbers are sobering. i just want to show you a couple of them. the rate of cancer expected to increase by 84% by the year 2050. deaths even higher by more than 93%. what we see is in older men, aging population, the risk is higher. we're talking about higher than 100% increase when you look at 2050. >> michael: that's terrifying. >> it's terrifying. >> michael: so why the disparities between men and women? >> well, we've been looking into this. not only globally, but within the united states. we've been seeing these numbers and these rates. there are some things scientists look to. number one, biological reasons. also, men are more likely to engage in high risk behaviors, smoking, alcohol. there's also an occupational exposure. men are more likely to be factory workers. to be exposed to toxins. i think most importantly, there are fewer guidelines and screening options that are male specific. as we were talking about during the break, i think there's a socials is spebgt aspect of

feeling weak. >> michael: you talk about fewer screening options. what is available for men? when should they talk to their doctors? >> when is really important. we use age to help make it as simple as possible. for example, we'll pick some common cancers leading causes of cancer for men. colorectal cancer. at the age of 45 you should start having these discussions. at the age of 50 prostate cancer's another big one. you should start having discussions about prostate cancer screening. they can be different from person to person. i use average risk or age for a person. if you have is a higher risk, family history, or if you are block, you should start these conversation earlier. >> michael: there's nothing weak about going to the doctor. >> nothing weak. it's a sign of strength and intelligence. >> michael: thanks, doc. appreciate that. george? >> george: we're going to turn to d23. it took place over the weekend. rebecca jarvis was there, from the parks to the screen. good morning, rebecca. >> rebecca: good morning, george. yeah, it was such a special

now experts say it's days from surpassing the joker as the highest grossing r rated movie of all time. deadpool and wolverine and "it ends with us" are both playing in theaters everywhere now. the combination is expected to help bring the august box office to its highest level since 2019. that's great news. >> michael: i went to see it on friday. great. deadpool and wolverine. >> lara: that is so good. all right. so now to vienna and swifties bringing peace and joy to the streets of the austrian capital after her eras tour had to be cancelled. videos have been going viral all over the internet showing millions of fans, like this one. a local bride and groom walking down the street being serenaded by swifties. check this out, guys. ♪ romeo save me take me somewhere we can be alone ♪ ♪ i'll be waiting

come true. i mean, i grew up with disney. >> rebecca: you are a magical performer, and so many of the roles you play are strong, strong women. and i wonder what you say to the women who are watching this who look up to you, who want to be legends in their own right. >> well, do you know what? you don't feel strong every moment of every day, you know? truth is, sometimes you feel, you know, really vulnerable. but in your vulnerability, there is strength. there's honesty. be you. the world is waiting for you and that special brand of magic that you bring to the moment. >> rebecca: such a powerful point made by angela bassett there. it was just an incredibly powerful night. people shared their stories. their families were there. even though it was inside a giant stadium with all of these incredible disney fans getting to experience the moment. it also felt incredibly small and intimate.

i was talking with robin earlier this morning about her experience a few years ago. she had her family there, her siblings, their children, her grand kids. it was a very special moment to be part of, guys. >> robin: to be clear, their grandchildren, not mine. [ laughter ] >> michael: thank you for the clarification. >> rebecca: i know that. >> robin: you said it right. how was it for you to be there, rebecca? you seem like you really enjoyed yourself. >> rebecca: i had such a nice time. it's just a really incredible, remarkable thing to see people from so many different paths. you had martha, angela bassett, miley cyrus. everybody going back to disney and being so appreciative of the time that they have spent with the company. it made me feel a lot of joy and pride and just excitement for them on their journeys.

joe, great to see you again. welcome to gma. >> you, too, george. >> george: good to see you. >> thank you. >> george: we first met when i introduced a documentary on your story called grand night hawk. it was the role you took on inside the ku klux klan. explain to everybody what that was. >> correct. initially, when you naturalize in the kkk, you're essentially called just a klansman. then there are various position within the hierarchy with regards to authority and supposed activities that they desire to mirror an actual government. so grand nighthawk was a series of steps i had to go through in order to become attached to the security and information handing of the kkk. >> george: and in that role, you became aware that several members of the klan, who were

also part of the state police inside florida, were actually plotting to murder a former prisoner, a black man? >> correct. i had uncovered law enforcement offsers from local, county and state organizations that were both active law enforcement members and active members of the kkk. >> george: and as you're doing that, how chilling to realize that they were actually plotting a murder? explain to everybody how you stopped it? how you helped stop it? >> the power that the police have, access to information, access to resources, is very alarming when it comes into the hands of the kkk. that is what they desire. they desire to be able to control the environment around any activity that they are engaged in. so some of the members came to me at a ceremony and said that

they had wanted to murder a former inmate at a prison because one of the klan members who was a law enforcement officer at the prison had a fight with this inmate. the kkk members decided that they were going to set up a situation where the member who got into the fight with the prisoner was going to be at work and other kkk members were going to murder the prisoner in retaliation. these members also had several other people they were looking to target for murder. in general, the kkk discusses the public they are a first amendment organization. however, secretly, they are a very violent organization. they do espouse to hopefully have a takeover of the government even if it means civil war. >> george: which puts you at great risk being inside the kkk.

i know it took a big toll on your family. >> yes. i have been at gun point many times. i had times where i had to change shirts while i perhaps had two recording devices on me at the time. that was essentially what the fbi office was like for me. >> george: in your book you wrote, in my years serving as army sniper in hostile countries, nothing i witnessed scares me as much as what we are facing at home now. >> the ability of the kkk to control the mechanisms of power within some of these law enforcement institutions was shocking. and i have said before publicly that the membership of the klan was far more prevalent and far more consequential than many officials were willing to admit. >> george: it is a chilling message. joe, thanks for coming in. >> thank you, george. >> george: the book will be out everywhere tomorrow.

>> lara: we are back with what to cook when you don't want to cook. >> do you feel like cooking? >> lara: i do because you make it so easy. this is caroline chambers, everybody. she's here to show us easy and delicious recipes. it's as if you are reading the minds of so many of us who want to cook. just doesn't come naturally or we don't have the time. >> that's exactly where the idea came from. i am a professional recipe developer. i love cooking. i made it my entire career. after i had my son, since then i have had two and three more. i didn't feel like cooking. just busy. >> lara: you can see it comes so naturally. we're doing a one pan wonder.

my favorite way to cook. they can go either way. but this, i snuck and tasted. it's so good. this is with chicken. you've already done a little seasoning. salt, pepper. you're just throwing these in. >> these are bone in skin on chicken thighs. there are three recipes that are one skillet and rice situations. we use all the different cuts. >> lara: i'm not a fan of bones or skin. so i just want to do boneless. >> this book is all about swaps. you could use a pork tenderloin that's been sitting in your freezer for six months. >> lara: i'm a rule follower, so i'll follow the recipe. you got a nice pot. little boil on the bottom. >> we are searing our chicken. cooking it skin side down to get that skin nice and crispy. if you love a chicken thigh, that's what you love about it. it's going to render and let go of its fat. that's what we're going to cook this sliced shallot and garlic

in. this is a one pot recipe. >> lara: all the ingredients blend so well together. >> why use a separate pot? we don't have time for that. we're cooking shallots and garlic. once it cooks down and caramelizes. >> lara: you sear both sides? >> no. we actually just cook one side. take a break. you've got a moment. come over here, flip that chicken over and look how beautiful that is. this is where the real one pot magic starts to happen. we're going to add our rice. just scoot your chicken over. pour that stock in there. >> lara: just dry rice. >> dry rice right into the pot.

we're going to add the stock. grab that pesto. this is called one skillet chicken and pesto rice. we're just stirring all of that in. pesto is such an easy flavorful ingredient. >> lara: even kids love it. my kids love pesto. >> we are throwing that into the oven for about 25 minutes. 15 minutes in we're going to add asparagus. it gets perfectly crisp tender. this would be three pans if you had chicken, rice and asparagus. >> lara: you are throwing in the asparagus raw. >> 15 minutes add the asparagus. do a raw oil drizzle and salt. throw some feta, some pesto, that's all it takes. i like to put this right in the middle of the dinner table. i have three boys. if they serve themselves, they will eat more. >> lara: we'll have the recipe. if you want an easy dessert how about peach cobbler, everybody? >> little caramelized snicker

doodle. this may sound tricky but it is the easiest thing. you can use apple in the winter, berries. whatever fruit you have to make this cobbler. i like to add ice cream to it. then if you have leftovers the next morning, little greek yogurt is like the best breakfast you will have. >> lara: the snicker element is insane. >> instead of a cobbler, add cinnamon. make it that snickerdoodle cookie vibe. >> lara: all of the recipes are basically one pot? >> tons of one pot, sheet pan. like, we are using a few dishes in as little time as humanly possible in this book. chapters are 15 minutes, 30, 45. the 45 are two minutes of prep and throw it in the oven. >> lara: thank you for coming. >> thank you for having me. >> lara: you can get these recipes on good morning america.com. caroline's cookbook is so good. it's out tomorrow. you will love it. and we will be right back. there it is.
