and finally tonight, drama and heartbreak for jordan chiles, stripped of her medal. tonight usa gymnastics vowing to exhaust every possible avenue after the sport's highest court has ordered the gymnast to return her bronze medal. romania appealed jordan chiles's bronze win, alleging that her coach didn't appeal in time, though the u.s. team says it has proof they moved in the allowed time frame. the court says its decision is final. chiles did of course also win a gold medal in paris with her teammates in the women's artistic gymnastics team final. chiles has become the target of racist attacks online and said in an instagram post that she would be taking time off social media to focus on her mental health.

is on edge, bracing for iran to launch an attack, and the u.s. is scrambling now to de-escalate those tensions while bolstering its forces in the region. abc's tom burke has the latest from tel aviv. >> an attack from iran or its proxies on israel, now expected this week, say us officials. those officials cautiously optimistic iran will limit the scope of its actions to avoid significant escalation. but the white house saying it has to be prepared for what could be a, quote, significant set of attacks. iran and hezbollah doubling down on their threats to retaliate for two high profile assassinations in tehran and beirut. the idf, now on high alert as the us moves more military assets to the middle east, revealing a guided missile submarine whose location is normally top secret, is heading to the region. >> what we're focused on is, continuing to de-escalate diplomatically. our hope and our intent is for to make sure that

an attack doesn't happen. >> hezbollah probing israeli defenses, firing dozens of rockets into northern israel, most of them intercepted by the iron dome, israeli blood banks and fortified underground hospitals preparing for an attack. it comes as hamas, another ally of iran, signals it won't enter into a new round of gaza ceasefire and hostage talks because it says it already accepted a deal weeks ago, and the idf reacting to a hamas claim that hamas's own guards in two separate incidents shot and killed a hostage and seriously wounded two other people, being held captive, the idf saying it has no intelligence to refute or confirm hamas's claims and israel has banned all its air force pilots from leaving the country. the idf, still not issuing emergency guidelines for civilians. a us official confirming the us is sending back channel messages to iran. tom soufi burridge, abc news,

condition after a horrific accident on the first day of school. police say the 12 year old girl's mother accidentally ran her over in a drop off lane. investigators say the girl had gotten out of the car and some of her stuff had rolled under her mother's suv. she crawled under to get the items her mom didn't realize it and started to drive away. >> very sad story. well, federal prosecutors say that they have broken up a scam targeting seniors. the gold bar scheme has cost victims millions of dollars. at least one of them is in their 80s. 20 people have been scammed, and investigators worry there could be many more. an urgent alert. this morning about a scam costing americans tens of millions of dollars. this woman says her aunt fell victim to the scam. >> i know my aunt has felt a lot of shame for this. unfortunately, it's been hard on everyone. we are worried because she is in jeopardy of losing her house. >> these scams are happening. they're happening to our parents. they're happening to

our grandparents, our friends and our neighbors. >> authorities in maryland yesterday announced the arrest of five alleged fraudsters. here's how the scam works. the scammers target victims with pop up ads online that claim the victim's personal data has been stolen. then they impersonate federal authorities to convince the victims to buy gold bars to better protect their life savings. the scammers then send couriers like this man for the transaction. at least $84 million have been stolen nationwide in the last year. seven victims in maryland alone have lost nearly 3 million, and authorities believe many more victims have yet to come forward. they have this simple advice to protect yourself if you look at the number and you don't recognize the number, don't answer the phone and don't click on the pop up ads on your computer. all right, some good advice there. those scams also often involve cryptocurrency. the five people arrested in maryland are being held without bond. well, south korea is
