downtown. >> the san francisco businesses in line to get a boost for events. >> good morning. it is wednesday, august 14th to start this check of our forecast with drew. >> yes, yesterday was lovely. >> we'll do more of the same today. it's foggy out there this morning across our exploratorium camera. some drizzle in the city even along the coast. but you look at current sky condition. it's not widespread fog this morning. it's patchy over oakland. certainly cloudy in half moon bay, but look at concord san jose, even napa currently showing clear skies across the board. so just like yesterday, we will find a lot of sunshine throughout the day. temperatures right now. good morning, san mateo 57 degrees 61 in hayward. we're at 64 in san jose. the wider view showing you 50s in the north bay, low to mid 60s inland. the ocean water temperature still cooling off a little bit. yesterday was 54 degrees. this morning. we're down to 53 degrees. so looking at the inland forecast today a couple of degrees warmer compared to yesterday. we'll go into the upper 80s. maybe 1 or 2 cities like antioch or brentwood touches about 90 degrees later

on today around the bay shoreline. we have some patchy cloud cover right now, but we have a lot of sunshine in store throughout the afternoon. we'll top out in the mid 70s. it will be breezy later on this afternoon and along the coast today. it will be quite foggy. we'll keep those winds with us throughout the afternoon. highs basically in the low and mid 60s. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times this morning. yeah. >> good morning drew. we're going to start off with a look at our overall map already showing that typical slowdown along the altamont pass. that trip made a little tougher. that's because of a high wind advisory that has been issued from 5 to 205. and there is a major crash at 11th street on westbound 205, slowing things down just a bit more. and then i'm going to take you to the south bay. this is roadwork northbound 880 at dixon landing road. it's not expected to end until about seven this morning. so it is causing a minor backup. you see things slowing down to about. oh, no. just updated to 68mph. so slowly improving. and then i want to take you to our oakland 880 cam. no issues as you pass the coliseum on the

nimitz. let's get back to the desk. >> amanda. thank you. happening now in the north bay. firefighters are working to gain control of a vegetation fire. it forced brief evacuations in novato. flames broke out late last night near atherton avenue and highway 101. the marin county sheriff's office says the fire is now 25% contained. all evacuation warnings and orders were lifted around 120 this morning. firefighters say no homes have been damaged. the cause is under investigation. developing news while you were sleeping, we reached the deadline for families to leave the road where they've been staying near the san francisco zoo. they've been living in their rvs since they were evicted from another street near lake merced earlier this year. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live along zoo road this morning. gloria, the city has been threatening to evict everyone. and did they leave? >> yeah. reggie, we came out to zoo road this morning and the rvs are all gone. the city had given the residents until midnight to move their rvs or be towed. and it looks like the

residents did move. we don't know where they've gone, but of course, we are looking into it. yesterday, our photographer came out here as well. there were about two dozen rvs here on zoo road near the san francisco zoo. many of these residents had moved from winston drive, and they were also pushed out of that road after the city implemented a four hour parking restriction for an upcoming repaving project. many of those residents had been living in rvs since the pandemic, and the community was made up of many working families. city workers have been meeting with residents to give them housing, resources and vouchers for housing, and the coalition on homelessness says the work. it is working this help and that they were close to placing many of the families. of course, they did want more time to put them in a more permanent housing situation. we're still working to find out again exactly where the families are, if they have been placed in other housing. and of course, we'll bring you those updates as soon as we have them. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc news. >> thank you. gloria. we're following up on a story. a lot

of you are looking at at abc seven news.com. waymo now has a reason. a group of robotaxi robotaxis keep honking at each other in a san francisco parking lot. over and over again over the past few weeks in soma. waymo says the honking is because of software that's meant to prevent slow moving crashes. for example, if someone is backing out of a parking spot and doesn't see you, you would honk if they got too close and that's basically what these waymo vehicles are doing. and they're doing it sometimes at four in the morning, the company says it is adjusting their software. >> the developments in the effort to bring new life to san francisco. amanda, the mayor, has just announced a half million dollars for some iconic businesses to bring more nightlife to the city. >> yeah. kumasi will have a map up ahead showing which businesses across the city will be involved. but first, the city says the goal is to produce a number of diverse weekend and evening events downtown through

the energy program with this new funding. 14 entertainment and nightlife businesses, along nehborhood organizations, will receive grants. those grants can range up, up to $50,000. now you can see some of those businesses involved here. some of them are iconic venues like the stud oasis and black cat. programing is slated to launch later this month and will see concerts, pop ups, theater performances, drag shows and street parties. the new entertainment zone, proposed earlier this year will also be incorporated through the e energy program. these grants will fund various expenses permitting and event planning, amongst other costs. the hope is for this new program to bring life to downtown and promote business and nightlife growth. mayor london breed says the city is exploring every possible avenue to make downtown an exciting and welcoming 24 over seven destination that attracts more people and new business opportunities. back to you. >> amanda. thank you. passengers

going from sfo to rome never even left california. their united airlines flight had to be diverted because of a mechanical issue. the plane landed safely in sacramento just before 6:00 last night. officials didn't specify what the issue was. one passenger described what happened. >> that's all they said. it was overheating, so they had to shut it off. and so they had to divert us to sacramento. it was kind of funny to me, is that i left sacramento to san francisco and came back to sacramento. >> girl, what were you. >> what are you. girl? girl. >> not that i know. >> that's a lot. >> it's a lot. the plane returned to sfo. actually, they they took these passengers on a different plane back to sfo and the airline rebooked the 148 passengers so they can go and enjoy rome. >> breaking overnight, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit near las vegas. here's the map. it hit just after eight last night in indian springs, and that's about 45 miles northwest

today versus average, most of us will be a bit above average temperatures today mainly in the 70s and 80s. but a few spots like concord, santa rosa likely in the low 90s. so for comparison, that's a few degrees above average in most spots. santa rosa one of the warmer spots coming in about seven degrees above average, but the long term trend with our temperature outlook through next week is really to find temperatures along the west coast to be below average. much of the heat over the next couple of weeks is going to be centered across texas, oklahoma, even new mexico. so for here locally, it's kind of a split. northern california likely seeing cooler than average temperatures. and then for the southern part of the state, we'll likely see warmer than average temperatures. so don't expect any intense heat coming our way the next couple of weeks. here's future weather by 930. we're still trying to break down some of this fog around the bay shore line, so not as quick of a clearing with the cloud cover today compared to yesterday, but it will be a nice day. will keep

is the main subject of discussion among parents, teachers, and students at santa rosa schools. after struggling with fights, gang issues, and even a stabbing death on campuses in recent years. the district has made some changes that will continue this year. district officials say student safety is a top priority. >> what we've done is increased staffing. i think one of the big changes that took place towards the end of last year is the change in in terms of campus supervisors, the school board passed a measure that would allow a law enforcement presence to come back to campuses. >> they also have a new superintendent. she's expected to introduce herself to students today as the new school year gets underway. >> students and staff are dealing with a crackdown on cell phones. amanda is at the live desk with the push from governor newsom and kumasi. >> there's certainly growing pressure from governor newsom, he sent a letter to school districts across the state yesterday urging them to limit cell phone use on campus. he cited the reported negative impacts of social media on the

mental health of young people. in his letter, governor newsom said every classroom should be a place of focus, learning and growth. on abc seven news at three. state superintendent of public instruction tony thurmond echoed the governor's concerns over mental health. >> it is clear when you look at the rates of depression and anxiety that our kids have, they need less time on the phone and more time focused, and they'll do better academically and mentally. >> mount diablo and ignacio valley high schools in concord are one week into their no phone pilot programs. students have to put their phones in locked pouches during the school day. >> ultimately, i think that the kids will, you know, probably see that they, you know, enjoy their peers more. they, you know, have better interactions. and yeah, i think it's going to be a good thing. >> and one criticism of phone limits is the ability to communicate in an emergency. thurmond says there are many solutions for that. and it's

something they will work through. now let's get to reggie. >> thanks, amanda. in the south bay, a high school in san jose is starting the new school year with a huge hit to its football program. the coach says thieves broke in. they stole almost everything, including the wiring that powers the football fields, lights and scoreboard. police say they're investigating the weekend theft and damage at santa teresa high school. the school's athletic booster club is a volunteer parent group that fundraises all year to provide what the school or district can't supply. the co-president says the thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment and material. >> we store in our merchandise that we use to fundraise, our supplies for our concession stands. heartbreaking. like you. you know, it's just i-team's. but emotionally, you feel bad for the boys and the team. >> if you'd like to help them buy new equipment, you can donate to the football team's gofundme or to the booster club. >> a special surprise for a school in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. former giants star hunter pence joined

your car. amanda, this involves a practice by general motors that may have led to higher insurance rates for potentially millions of us. >> and, reggie, the state of texas is suing general motors, accusing the company of violating the privacy of millions of americans. >> the suit claims gm misled customers by encouraging them to enroll in its tech based safety program, like onstar smart driver. gm then collected data on things like how many times people exceeded the speed limit or violated traffic laws. then the company sold that data to data brokers who sold it to insurance companies, who raised rates for some drivers. the problem drivers didn't know their data was going to be sold. texas attorney general ken paxton says, quote, millions of american drivers wanted to buy a car, not a comprehensive surveillance system that unlawfully, unlawfully records information about every drive they take and sells their data to any company willing to pay for it. a gm spokesperson says

the company has been in discussions with the attorney general's office, and gm may not be alone. texas authorities are also investigating other automakers for their handling of customer data. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. people in richmond may not get to vote on taxing chevron after all. today, city leaders are expected to decide whether to drop a november ballot measure in exchange for a big payout. the city says chevron has offered $550 million over ten years. if they give up that tax initiative. the idea behind the tax was to compensate the city for polluting pollution caused by chevron's oil refinery. richmond was already facing one lawsuit over the ballot measure. chevron was expected to sue if the plan passed. a financial tech company based in san francisco is shutting down after running out of money. the founder of tally shared the news on linkedin, saying they couldn't secure enough funding to keep going. and we saw these for lease signs on their headquarters in potrero hill. the company launched nearly nine

years ago, pitching financial tools to help people manage credit card debt. >> developing news this morning. families who have been living along zoo road in san francisco are gone overnight. a city imposed deadline for them to leave came and went. it's the latest challenge for a group of people who have been struggling to find permanent housing since the pandemic. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live along z road this morning. gloria >> good morning. reggie. yes, this looks very different than what it looked like yesterday. yesterday, there were still about 24 rvs that were parked out here. right now, there are none. the city had given those rv residents until midnight to leave this area or be towed, and city workers have been meeting with residents, giving them housing resources. also vouchers for housing in many cases. some of these rv residents who were living on zoo road will qualify to get a percentage of their rent paid by the city for up to three years. but san francisco will not be paying for people's

pleasanton ridge regional park appears to show a family of mountain lions. abc seven news reporter jared stone has that. >> the mountain lions were spotted around two miles up trail from where i'm standing here at the pleasanton ridge regional park. i spoke with several people who were in that area tuesday evening. this video was shot by a man who had gone running on the trail on monday morning. he tells me he recorded this around 6:15 a.m. he says he didn't hear the mountain lions. he just suddenly saw them. i asked him if he felt threatened. i mean, we're not just talking about 1 or 2 mountain lions, but four of them. he told me he did not feel threatened since they were 500 or so feet away. they didn't stop at all either, he said. it appeared that there were three juvenile lions and an older one. his thought was that that was their mother. we showed this mountain lion video to hikers, some of whom have seen mountain lions before, but not a group or family of them. >> if i had been the one taking that video, i definitely would
