when i'm talking to other parents who's been doing this for years and years, they talk about how they always used to be safe and respected. every neighborhood they went to, the community, looked out for them, and they felt safe going to those neighborhoods. sadly, i'm hearing a lot of carriers today tell me they don't feel the same way. >> a daily route that seems to get more dangerous by the day. mail carriers in the bay area targeted more than anywhere else in the state, and another attack today points to a widening problem. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> tonight. the u.s. postal inspector tells us they're noticing thieves. now target smaller suburban bay area towns

and cities. >> the latest, a daytime robbery of a mail carrier in danville. sky seven was over the scene today, just before noon off camino tassajara. the attacks have become such an issue. the post office recently increased rewards to $150,000 for help making arrests. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in the east bay with the story. >> deputies scouring an area of unincorporated danville near black hawk, where authorities say a mail carrier was robbed on wednesday. this is video from sky seven showing that carrier, who is physically okay shortly after the thief took his keys on portola drive and came up as if they were a customer and then demanded the carrier's keys, snatched the keys, gestured that he had a weapon. >> scared the carrier off and then fled on foot through a foot path there in the danville area. >> matt norfleet is the u.s. postal inspector. the law enforcement arm of the u.s. postal service. he says that robberies are no longer just

affecting letter carriers in big cities like san francisco, oakland and san jose. >> we're definitely seeing these robberies happening in the in the bay area suburbs, in outlying areas away from those population centers. we believe there is a underground market to buy and sell these keys. >> those keys are eventually used to open large mail boxes, like the one you see in this video from south san jose earlier this year. norfleet says many of these thieves aren't after packages, rather mail that may contain checks or credit cards. the reward for the arrest and conviction of these robbers is now up to $150,000. >> it's absolutely a lot of money. we consider it a reflection on how seriously we take the problem. it's outrageous and unacceptable for working people, for letter carriers to be facing threats. >> i was approached by a man brandishing a shotgun earlier this year. >> we spoke with mail carrier bill murphy. he's now been robbed twice on his east bay

in the city. fog giving way to sunny, breezy conditions. oakland 76 and you will see plenty of sun with mild weather near average in san jose at 83 degrees. summer warmth in walnut creek 90 degrees. with the sun shining. so here's your 24 hour planner. fog to start off the morning. 50s and 60s. sunshine for most by noontime, except for the immediate coastline, there will still be a few patches of fog and a wide range of temperatures from the mid 90s inland to the low 60s coast. breezy to gusty once again tomorrow evening. there are changes coming your way for the weekend and it includes more than this. this is going to be another breezy to gusty one for tomorrow with 25 to over 30 mile an hour winds. i'll be back to tell you what other changes you can expect for the weekend. coming up, dan okay sandhya, thanks a lot. >> tomorrow, san francisco superior court plans to toss out dozens of cases to help clear a backlog on the docket. this comes after a july ruling that courts can no longer use pandemic era backlogs to delay trials past their legal

deadlines. the district attorney's office says 70 cases will be dismissed with prejudice. that means they cannot be refiled in san francisco. the cases include duis, deadly driving, uh, sex crimes and domestic violence as well. >> it's one of the biggest challenges san francisco faces. fentanyl and overdose deaths. but in our work to build a better bay area, we are once again seeing a hopeful sign in the devastating crisis. the city says deadly overdoses fell from 79 in july of last year to 39 last month. that's almost a 50% drop between those two months. but as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, the work is far from over. as demand for fentanyl isn't yet slowing down. >> it's the drop in overdose deaths san francisco has been desperate to see. >> we are continuing to work to change our systems, break down the bureaucracy, change the culture around access to treatment of buprenorphine and methadone. >> wednesday, the city reporting

a 15% overall decrease in overdose deaths so far this year, largely crediting the work of its night navigation team. taking treatment to the streets. >> i want to celebrate that. yes, our numbers are low, but at the end of the day, for me, we still have so much more to do. >> donna hilliard is the executive director of code tenderloin, the nonprofit helping to operate the team real time, real access to care means everything. in its first few months, the team doled out more than 800 prescriptions for buprenorphine via telehealth, and the city wants to see methadone made just as accessible. getting behind ab 2115 introduced by assembly member matt haney, the bill would align the state with federal guidelines, allowing methadone to be more easily prescribed. the stigma and barriers caused by this overregulation prevent people from entering and staying in treatment. meanwhile, warnings of a weaker supply of fentanyl, dubbed soap driving people to use more if they then go to the

same dealer and get a different potency, and they go and they use them more, it is a very dangerous place to be. >> lydia bransten is the executive director of the gubbio project, a nonprofit working with people on the streets of the mission district. while i am of course like elated that there are less people dying this month than there were a year ago this month, this is not the time to sort of ease up on anything but to double down. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> now to developing news. the world health organization has declared the mpox outbreak in africa a global emergency. what's worrisome is the strain is deadlier than other versions of the virus. it has also infected women and children. it was primarily contained to the democratic republic of congo, but has spread to other countries. we asked an infectious disease specialist how concerned we should be in the bay area. >> the reason why this is called a public health emergency of

international concern, is so that we divert resources to the countries that need it the most. you know, i think right now it's not a threat, but we are trying to make it continue to not be a threat. that's why we raised the awareness and that's why we're trying to, again, nip it in the bud in these countries, in africa, one of the best forms of prevention is to get vaccinated. >> and mpox requires two doses a historic settlement. >> in a story we followed closely, the city of richmond is dropping its attempt to tax chevron in exchange for a financial settlement. under the agreement, chevron will pay out a total of $550 million to the city over ten years time. richmond was considering adding a ballot measure for november to add $1 per barrel tax on each barrel produced at the refinery, but that was dropped after today's agreement. the mayor says it will save the city a potentially costly bit of litigation. >> what's happened here, has demonstrated to the community,

to the nation, to the world that when we as people pull together, we can create, change the money can be used for public safety services, infrastructure, youth services, recreation and toxic land cleanup. >> chevron's annual revenue last year was a little more than $200 billion. >> in the south bay, the city of san jose is now the first metro region in the country to have median single family home prices hit $2 million. that is from the national association of realtors, which has tracked prices since 1979. san francisco is the second most expensive region on the list at $1.5 million. california metros represent seven of the top ten. the national median price is $422,000. san jose. tech giant cisco is cutting 7% of its global workforce. it's about 6000 jobs. this is on top of an

earlier round of layoffs this year, when more than 4000 jobs were eliminated. the company specializes in networking equipment, but it's now looking to shift its focus to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. cisco saw its revenue dropped by 10%, but still beat wall street's expectations. >> now, to your voice and your vote. tomorrow, president joe biden and vice president kamala harris will hold their first event together since biden dropped out of the 24 race election. they'll be at a community college in maryland to talk about the progress that they're making to lower costs for americans in the meantime, former president donald trump plans to hold a news conference at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey. the campaigns continue as both sides face hacking attempts from a group allegedly linked to iran. google confirmed the activity today and said it's far reaching. current u.s. officials are targeted, including those with ties to trump, harris and biden. >> stuck in the santa cruz mountains after a wipe out landslide. neighbors are still

to everything, and that was back in march, when a landslide wiped out this critical stretch of road in the santa cruz mountains. and we have been checking in on this close knit community ever since. it has been a long handful of months for these neighbors. their main access road has been unusable, which can make for hours long errands and commutes. >> as you can tell, it's a huge nuisance. but finally, tonight, work is underway. a temporary fix is being added along mountain charlie road, just off highway 17 and south of los gatos. >> and now there's a new challenge getting back to school. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has the story. i mean, this whole area sunk down, so they're trying to recoup everything that was, you know, has gone down the hill. >> los gatos residents are still having to walk, climb or bike home over a massive landslide. a permanent repair of mountain charlie road could take years, but on wednesday, construction crews started to build a

temporary road. >> it will be a life changer. honestly, like, i can't even tell you. like when i said i was almost in tears, i was. >> residents could take an alternate route through scotts valley, but that adds at least an hour of commute time. debbie robinson and her daughter haley have been using an old golf cart. >> it used to have a better paint job, but now we're using it to get from the slide to home and vice versa. >> haley started her senior year of high school on monday. >> it's harder to go hang out with my friends or have them come see me, because it's like my friends used to come and hang out with me at my house, but now i don't really have that opportunity because parents don't want kids walking over this. >> now, the county says the temporary road will connect one side of mountain charlie road to the other. it will be 15ft wide and it will be a single lane road. >> the best way to fund this temporary road would be to use the 2016 measure d funds. we do expect this entire road repair to cost $500,000, but we think that this is a road that really needs to be prioritized. >> we spoke with emily bieber, a

mom of a preschooler and a third grader who starts school this week. >> we would have normally maybe signed up for swimming and, you know, kind of extracurriculars, like, we're not doing that. i can't handle any. like we just need to do the basics. >> construction for the fill and road is expected to take 4 to 6 weeks. >> i'm ecstatic that there will be a temporary road. i mean, we'll take dirt. we'll take gravel. i just need a road. >> i mean, i know that we can't have the full fix, but anything is better than having to deal with what we've had to deal with for the last six months in the santa cruz mountains. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow. santa clara county is making a renewed push to alert people about the help that's readily available. if they're dealing with mental health issues or other crises. officials want to make people aware of suicide prevention lifeline, which can be reached by dialing 988. it will connect them with local resources to provide mental health support. it's an alternative to calling 911. if you or someone you know

digital creator economy is valued at $250 billion. >> transportation secretary pete buttigieg is announcing millions of dollars in funding for projects at lake tahoe. buttigieg was the keynote speaker at the lake tahoe summit today. his announcement also included a fascinating tale about how a childhood trip to his father's home country of malta taught him about tahoe in that country houses often go by a name rather than a numbered address, and the address, so to speak. >> the name of the place we stayed at was was called lake tahoe. i had no idea what that meant, but i learned that the maltese family we were renting from had once visited this place and were so enchanted with it that they named their home after it. >> it was also announced today a trail will be named after dianne feinstein. the senator who died last year, helped start the summit in 1997. >> while we're talking about the beauty of the natural world, portland airport celebrated the reopening of its main terminal

today with a whole new esthetic. check this out. the airport found a way to bring oregon's outdoors indoors. a $2 billion renovation has transformed the terminal into a green space filled with about 5000 live trees and plants, along with nearly 50 skylights to let in natural light. the airport even plans to have on occasion, therapy, llamas and alpacas on hand for travelers to enjoy. so great. i'll miss my flight because i'm patting the alpaca. >> i know, i mean, it's a valid excuse for not being at your gate on time. all right, let's check on our weather with meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> steady as she goes. sandy. it's so nice. absolutely. >> hopefully it will be worth it if you do miss your flight. by the way, dan, let me show you a live picture. right now we're trying to get this camera ready so you can see the moon. pretty cool view as we look at san francisco, the transamerica pyramid uh- definitely have a little bit of fog that has formed along the coast and in the city. high pressure came in today. we got temperatures that

were up into the mid 90s inland, low 60s, coast side. it's going to keep us dry for the time being. but one thing we are noticing is a deep trough will be developing this weekend and it will set the stage for some rain across the pacific northwest, which in august you're thinking, okay, they get some seattle 6000/500 of an inch, but that rain line is going to move into eureka. nine hundredths of an inch. medford getting a quarter of an inch definitely could use the rain. not just here in our state, but across the pacific northwest where there are numerous fires burning. as we take a look at our live doppler seven. certainly the wind flow is onshore that has kept us on the gusty side this evening. it is still a little gusty at sfo, 17 miles an hour, 23 mile an hour winds in fairfield. and as we go hour by hour, you will notice that those winds will taper overnight, but then they really increase back up again. we're looking at 36 point raise in the afternoon, and in the evening we're looking at 30 to 35 mile an hour winds for the strongest locations. temperatures right

now 50 to 70. it is nice to have that breeze because you can open up the windows and at least cool things off. sutro tower cameras showing you a lovely view of downtown san francisco overnight tonight. fog near the coast and bay tomorrow. breezy to gusty again and the next few days we'll keep you in that mild to warm mode like we were today. as we go hour by hour, there will be some fog along the coast and around the bay. can't rule out a little spotty drizzle. 8 a.m. you will notice. still some fog. so if you are commuting in the morning, give yourself that extra time. especially if you have to head off early in the early part of the day. but 3:00 marin county coast up along the sonoma county coast. you're starting to see some clearing as the winds mix things up. temperatures in the 50s and 60s first thing in the morning. afternoon highs will be in the low to mid 90s inland, low 60s coast. a little bit of fog still lingering near the coast line as we look at hurricane ernesto. it is pulling away from puerto rico, but it soaked puerto rico. it is certainly strengthening. flash flood watches remain in effect for parts of puerto rico.

it is going to continue to move to the north and northeast. 85 mile an hour winds right now, with ernesto expected to become a major hurricane as it nears bermuda, a category two, and then eventually moving out over the open ocean. of course, for the eastern seaboard, they are looking at some large swells. the accuweather seven day forecast, a wide range of temperatures next couple of days. you don't like the 90s? we're going to drop those temperatures most noticeable inland by saturday mid 80s inland low 60s coast certainly cooler than average and then recovering as we head towards next week. back up to where you should be even a little
