finds inflation cooled more than expected last month, but food prices remain stubbornly high. >> abc's em win reports on how the candidates are responding. >> this morning, the candidates for president focusing on the economy. vice president harris expected to lay out her economic platform in north carolina tomorrow. abc news has learned she'll propose banning corporate price gouging on food and groceries. former president trump responding, saying harris won't be able to do that. >> there's no such thing as her going out and doing that. what you want to do is create the incentives so that people can't cheat. they can't price gouge. >> a new report shows inflation cooling at 2.9%, its lowest level in three years. food prices, though, are 2.2% higher than a year ago. some items are far costlier, like eggs. 19% higher due in part to bird flu concerns. chuck. chuck. chuck. >> chuck. chuck. chuck. >> trump in north carolina

yesterday touted his economic plan, which includes eliminating taxes on social security benefits and tips. he also promised to cut energy and electricity prices by half, although he provided few details on how and trump continued his attacks on harris. >> she's crazy don't laugh. don't laugh. no, her laugh is career threatening. she's not smart. she's not intelligent. >> the harris campaign responding, accusing trump of running to slash taxes for rich donors and corporations. trump's running mate, senator jd vance in michigan, vowed to bring back manufacturing jobs and claimed undocumented immigrants are undercutting american wages, later appearing on fox news. another issue came up abortion. vance was asked about suburban women who are concerned about their reproductive rights. >> i think most suburban women care about the normal things that most americans care about. they care about inflation. they

care about the price of groceries. they care about public safety and the streets where their kids play. >> meanwhile, a moment of levity in the harris campaign, preparing for next week's convention, releasing this video of harris and governor tim walz, who failed to pick up the phone when harris first called him to ask if he'd be her running mate. >> i was hoping maybe we wouldn't have to. i called you tim. yes. you didn't answer, tim. i know, i know the. what happened? the most important call of my life. it popped up and we didn't recognize the caller id, and it went to it. went to voicemail. >> and when abc news, washington. >> independent presidential candidate robert kennedy jr is reportedly trying to offer vice president harris his endorsement in exchange for a cabinet position, if she's elected. that's according to the washington post, which says kennedy's campaign would only acknowledge reaching out to harris but did not hear back. >> hurricane ernesto is heading north and gaining strength after slamming the virgin islands and

puerto rico. nearly half of puerto rico lost power. some rivers overflowing after ten inches of rain. schools are closed and many hospitals are running on generators. ernesto could be a category three storm when it takes aim at bermuda tomorrow. the east coast of the u.s. will see heavy surf this weekend. your full forecast coming up in just a few moments. >> breaking overnight. a new study is raising alarm about the health of american women. the study finds the u.s. now has the lowest life expectancy among 14 high income countries. this morning, a wake up call for women's health. a new study finds women in the u.s. live, on average, 80 years. that's five years fewer than women in other high income nations. >> we have the lowest life expectancy, highest rate of avoidable deaths, highest rate of cardiovascular deaths. and this all really comes from the u.s. being the one country in the analysis that doesn't have a universal health system. >> one major factor, researchers say, is racial and ethnic

disparities. here in the u.s. with black and hispanic women more likely to lack health insurance and forgo visits to primary care doctors who can catch medical issues early. >> women in the u.s, particularly black women, are more likely to say that they have at least one social service need, which means which includes not having nutritious foods, not being able to pay their bills. all those sorts of things that go beyond health care. but we know directly affect health outcomes. >> american women are also more likely to have multiple chronic health conditions. poor diet, a lack of exercise, and obesity. among the factors. the report also finding women in the u.s. face unique social and economic pressures, including a significant gender pay gap that can weigh on mental health. meanwhile, a separate study out this morning on aging pinpoints two specific ages when our bodies go through physical decline. age 44 and age 60.

researchers say it's around those two birthdays, when our bodies can see significant changes in metabolism, cardiovascular health and immune function. scientists say the changes in metabolism mean the body is breaking food down differently. they say more research is needed on how those changes affect our health. >> cease fire talks are resuming in the middle east today, but hamas is not expected to be there as palestinians in gaza face more deadly strikes. israel and hamas are accusing each other of trying to sabotage a potential peace deal. a hamas official insists the group will only move forward with a proposal it already agreed to. and adding to the complications, it could take negotiators weeks to get messages to the leader of hamas, who is hiding in gaza. >> ukrainian forces are advancing deeper into russia, launching strikes on several military airfields to chip away at russian air power. ukraine says it has taken more than 100 russian fighters captive in 24 hours. abc's ian pannell reports

more than 200,000 russian civilians are fleeing their homes. >> the longer this goes on, the more embarrassing it is for vladimir putin. ukraine now rubbing salt into the wound by opening a hotline for russian residents who want to evacuate to ukraine. but a senior russian military official now vowing to launch an all out offensive. in other words, this is far from a done deal. >> the incursion is said to be the largest attack on russia since world war two. >> the new school year is underway in parts of the country, and with it comes a reminder to parents and kids alike about the safety on the streets. police in texas are investigating an attempted kidnaping, and it's not the only one recently caught on camera. a new warning for parents after two attempted kidnapings caught on camera in texas. oh my god, did it hit me? surveillance cameras from a home in north dallas captured a group of nine year olds screaming for help after they say a man in a white suv asked one of them to look at

something inside his vehicle. >> he said there's a football player that has a car, and then he said, get in the back of the car. and i said, i'm sorry, i don't talk to strangers. and i ran away. >> the man then chased jonathan for a short distance before taking off. >> we were very lucky, and we're very grateful. >> and earlier that morning, in a neighborhood nearby, police got a call about a suspicious vehicle, possibly following a high school student. a dark-colored car was driving up and down a street, slowing down each time. the student hid behind a tree and a car and then knocked on her door for help. >> she said that somebody that she didn't know had been following her, kind of gawking at her, staring at her, and making her feel uncomfortable. she was extremely shook up. >> police say there's no indication the cases are related. and experts say these types of situations often begin with strangers asking for things or listening to this, claiming to look for lost animals. >> time now for your thursday weather.

>> hurricane ernesto is a big concern across the eastern part of the nation here. good morning. we're tracking some dangerous rip currents up and down the east coast of the u.s. will be making a run near bermuda, probably as a category two, or perhaps still a category three storm on saturday. big impacts there. but the rip currents are the main concern for the eastern u.s. we also have some severe storms on our own hands here in the midwest. later this evening and tonight, there may be two rounds of rain in chicago, but severe weather in the evening for accuweather. i'm jeff cornish for abc news. >> coming up, an eight year old uses a bat to protect her dad from a robber. >> also ahead, a first of its kind law banning face coverings in public. why free speech activists are crying foul. >> and later, the airline customer who just could not take

women. what does she want you to know? this morning on good morning america. >> well, look at this tense moments in this minnesota liquor store. police received video of an eight year old fighting off an armed robber with a baseball bat. the suspect had pulled a weapon, which turned out to be a bb gun on the store clerk. and that clerk's daughter grabbed a bat and started swinging. that suspect is now due in court tomorrow. >> crimes like armed robbery are one explanation for a new crackdown on people wearing masks. they were common during the pandemic, but now they're being used by criminals to shield their identities. this morning, one county in new york imposing a first of its kind ban on masks. >> this is a bill that is going to protect the public. nobody has a constitutional right to hide their identity in public. >> nassau county executive bruce blakeman signing the mask transparency act, making it a misdemeanor for anyone to wear a

facial covering to hide their identity in public. there are exemptions for religious or medical reasons. the penalty is up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. >> i was attacked by a group of pro-palestinian thugs who all covered up their identity with masks. there's an ulterior motive behind those masks, and they need to be called out and banned and arrested on the spot. >> blakeman signing the bill in response to recent political protests. >> people who wore masks and engaged in anti-semitic acts, engaged in violence, tried to abridge people's constitutional rights. >> but opponents say the bill violates free speech rights and gives police too much discretion. >> all of these people are subject to being stopped by the police to ask them why they're wearing a mask, what they can do is further question you. >> they could potentially detain you if you gave evasive answers. like you don't know where you're

going to, or you don't know what your medical condition is. the aclu is already vowing to challenge the ban in court. >> there is another option. other lawmakers are proposing a bill to impose harsher penalties on people caught committing a crime while wearing a mask. >> a major drug bust revealed yet another hiding place for cocaine. officers in new york found 360 pounds of cocaine stored right there in a compartment of this flatbed truck. the drugs are worth $4.5 million. three men were arrested near los angeles. it was raisins that caused a major traffic jam. hundreds of boxes of raisins spilled onto this freeway. that's called the two there after a crash involving two big rigs. it is unclear what caused that crash, but no injuries were thankfully reported. >> what a mess. coming up, remembering a beloved actress from the notebook. >> also ahead, a teenager's attitude on a school field trip to a courthouse gets her in trouble with the judge. but did the judge's reaction go too far?

investigating an embarrassing moment in the skies a flight to wyoming last week, operated by skywest, was forced to divert 200 miles to salt lake city after the pilot admitted to passengers that he wasn't certified to land at the jackson hole airport. pilots need special clearance there because of the terrain. the airline blamed a paperwork issue. police at chicago's o'hare airport are looking for a woman who attacked workers at frontier airlines. witnesses say she got violent when she wasn't allowed to board her flight after the doors had closed. she threw a phone and a computer monitor at the workers, hitting one in the leg. >> now to michigan, where a judge laid down the law when a 15 year old misbehaved in his courtroom. but some say he went too far. it was a field trip that ended in handcuffs. a teenager visiting a detroit courthouse with other students was soon clashing with the judge. >> one thing you'll learn about my courtroom is that i am not a

toy. i'm not to be played with. >> judge kenneth king became visibly agitated when the 15 year old repeatedly fell asleep. >> he fell asleep in my courtroom one more time and put you in the back. understood. >> the judge had her removed from court, but he says that failed to fix her. quote, attitude. so then he brought out a jail uniform and handcuffs. >> that's not something that normally happens. but i felt compelled to do it because i didn't like the child's attitude. >> he even threatened her with jail time to teach her a lesson about behavior. >> i'm going to go to sleep tonight while you're sitting in the juvenile detention facility. was i really going to do that? probably not. could i have? probably so. but that's not what i want to do to a kid who's there on a field trip. >> some claim the judge went too far. >> it's totally inappropriate. there there were so many other ways in which to have helped that young girl learn. >> the nonprofit that hosted the field trip saying, quote, it's unfortunate that he chose to make an example of a 15 year old
