us about the high profile client. she had to turn down. >> good morning. this thursday, august 15th, start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, we're here for a nice warm afternoon. a little breezy today, just like yesterday. here's the accuweather forecast. this is sutro tower a live look outside showing you that sun is on its way up. we do have low clouds over the city and along the coast, but it's not widespread. you look at current sky conditions, many of us reporting clear skies from concord to san jose to napa. it's the immediate coastline and parts of the city in oakland that are dealing with the fog this morning. current temperatures out there right now around the bay shoreline. mid 50s, low 60s. good morning. fremont, 56 degrees. the same in redwood city. widen out the view and show you inland. we have some mild air brentwood right now coming in close to 70 degrees in the north bay were mainly in the mid and upper 50s. as we start, you on this thursday. so inland very similar to yesterday when it comes to our temperatures, upper 80s lower 90s. all that sunshine in store today looks lovely around the bay shoreline. we do have a

limited cloud cover. sunshine is with us pretty quickly this morning. temperatures in the mid 70s. a little breezy this afternoon and then along the coast we'll have some gusty winds 20 to 30mph brighter than yesterday. daytime highs mainly in the low and mid 60s. let's check in with amanda. see those drive times. >> good morning drew. let's go to the south bay where we are dealing with a two car crash. this is southbound 101 before 880. right now it is blocking the left lane, causing a minor slowdown. but luckily it is in the counter commute direction, so hopefully not too bad for your morning commute here at 602. then i want to go to another part of san jose. this is 101 and 880. you can see things moving pretty smoothly here, which is the good news. you can see no major backup because of the issue that i talked about prior. and then i'm going to get to drive times that typical slowdown. tracy to dublin at 56 minutes, 16 minutes to get from san rafael to san francisco and then antioch to concord, 21 minutes kumasi amanda. >> happening today, we're set to learn more about several cases

that will be thrown out of san francisco court because of a backlog. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in san francisco with more on what the d.a. is saying. gloria >> good morning. kumasi san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says four cases will still be prosecuted, but some 70 are up for dismissal by a san francisco court. and the san francisco standard is reporting that they are for crimes such as dui, domestic violence, sexual battery and deadly driving because of a july ruling that courts can no longer use backlogs during the pandemic to delay trials past their legal deadlines. jenkins sent us a statement saying in part, quote, because the court previously continued cases without proper findings of good cause and the court's subsequent abuse of discretion, the court is now required to dismiss those cases. regrettably, the system has now failed countless victims of crime who will not see justice done. and she says that the court's decision to continue cases past their statutory

deadlines for trial has deprived victims and defendants of their rights. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> and it's not just packages getting stolen now. thieves are targeting mail carriers and their keys here in the bay area. usps officials say robbers are pretending to be customers before gesturing that they are armed and demanding a mail. carriers keys. the keys are then used to open large mailboxes. robbers will then look for mail holding checks or credit cards. one mail carrier in danville has been robbed twice. one of those times at gunpoint. there is now a $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of these robbers. >> it's absolutely a lot of money. we consider it a reflection on how seriously we take the problem. it's outrageous and unacceptable for working people, for letter carriers to be facing threats. >> authorities advise collecting your mail every day in the early evening. since many of these mail thefts happen overnight.

>> the mayor of east palo alto is calling on fellow city leaders to take action to clear encampments. mayor antonio lopez announced he will be issuing an ordinance to direct clearing of encampments after at least two written warnings and two offers of shelter. >> want to be clear? this isn't about criminalizing people. it's about helping people, empowering people and encouraging them to get the help they need and they deserve. this is a win win for our county and our community. in my city, the unhoused population is down in east palo alto from 169 people in 2022 to 81 people last year. >> san jose mayor matt mahan and other democratic leaders around the state are throwing their support behind prop 36. this referendum would roll back reforms passed by voters in 2014, giving prosecutors the power to charge repeat theft offenders with a felony. supporters say the change will help tackle the surge in retail theft and drug related offenses.

mahan says it also addresses the fentanyl crisis by imposing mandated drug treatment for some drug crimes, by requiring those who need treatment to get treatment. >> we will save lives. we will help bring our homeless neighbors indoors. and we will save hard pressed consumers money on everything they buy. >> governor newsom disagrees, saying the bill is overly punitive and unnecessary. other opponents say it would increase incarceration levels and a return to prison. overcrowding >> santa clara county has reported its first death from west nile virus this year. yesterday, the county announced two people have been infected. both had to go to the hospital. one is now recovering at home, the other one died earlier this month. they were immunocompromised. the health department says there was no known connection between these two people, and it's not clear if they were infected in the county.

>> your voice, your vote. happening today, president biden and vice president harris will hold their first event together since the president dropped out of the 2024 race. they'll be at a community college in maryland talking about the progress they're making to lower costs for americans. a new survey shows californians are excited about a harris presidency. a berkeley igs poll gives harris a 25 point lead, 59 to 34% over donald trump in her home state. by comparison, president biden led trump by only 18 points in the last igs poll conducted in february. the poll shows harris receiving higher levels of support than biden, almost across the board, but especially amongst voters ages 18 to 29, where she is polling 23 points higher than biden did today. former president donald trump plans to hold a news conference at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey, yesterday. trump cast his ballot in florida for the states early voting kickoff. we're still waiting to hear whether the republican vice president candidate, jd vance, will agree to a debate.

yesterday, democratic vp candidate tim walz said he'll attend the vice presidential debate. is scheduled for october 1st. >> the world health organization has declared the outbreak in africa as a global emergency. a man is at the live desk with one bay area infectious disease specialist is saying about the growing concerns. yeah. >> kumasi said the designation. it comes after a meeting of the un health agency's emergency committee. what has health experts even more worried is this strain is said to be deadlier than other versions of the virus. it is also infected women and children. the outbreak was primarily contained to the democratic republic of congo, but we're told it has spread to other countries. we asked ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong how concerned we should be here in the bay area. >> the reason why this is called a public health emergency of international concern, is so that we divert resources to the countries that need it, the

most. you know, i think right now it's not a threat, but we are trying to make it continue to not be a threat. that's why we raised the awareness and that's why we're trying to, again, nip it in the bud in these countries, in africa. >> the world health organization says there have been more than 15 or 14, i should say thousand cases and 524 deaths in africa this year. already surpassing last year's numbers. now, one of the best forms of prevention is to get vaccinated. mpox requires two doses. reggie aqui i'll take it for amanda. >> the accuweather forecast walnut creek. this morning we have clear skies out there. current conditions showing you 62 degrees in walnut creek later on this afternoon. we'll hit the low 90s inland today, so it will be mild out there. looking at our highs today versus average across the board, we will be a few degrees above average. here's the forecast highs. warmest cities today in the 80s and 90s. compare that to where we typically are this time of the year. we're a few degrees

google's android app store, as punishment for running a monopoly. >> after a three hour hearing yesterday, the judge said he is considering a mandate requiring google's play store for androids to offer people a choice to download alternative app stores. last december, a jury found the play store illegally gouged users and stifled innovation. epic games, the makers of the popular video game fortnite, filed the lawsuit. it claimed google's requirement that purchases be made through the play store and not third parties created a monopoly. during yesterday's hearing, google said third party app stores can trigger what they're calling security chaos. the company estimates it could cost as much as $600 million, depending on what the judge orders. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. abc seven news is following the story of a landslide that wiped out a critical stretch of road in the santa cruz mountains. residents have been walking, climbing, biking over this landslide for months. now, a temporary fix is

finally underway. crews are building a single lane along mountain charley road off of highway 17 and south of los gatos. neighbors are facing a new challenge getting back to school. debbie robinson daughter haley, have been using an old golf cart to get them from their house to the landslide and back. haley started her senior year of high school this week. >> it's harder to go hang out with my friends or have them come see me, because it's like my friends used to come and hang out with me at my house, but now i don't really have that opportunity because parents don't want kids walking over this. >> construction for the road is expected to take 4 to 6 weeks. san mateo county and three bay area cities are getting new funds to help create affordable housing. governor newsom is rewarding $130 million in project homekey grants to nine communities to fund new housing projects. the local cities include san francisco, richmond and sebastopol. the governor says the grants will create 533

permanent supportive homes for an estimated 4800 californians. >> and oscar nominated actress and leading lady of independent films has died. gena rowlands passed away yesterday. the cause of death hasn't been announced in june. her son revealed she'd been living with alzheimer's for the past five years. rowlands was best known for the movies she made with her late husband and director, john cassavetes. most of her popular films were a woman under the influence and the notebook. she was 94. >> kristen usak has become a huge star and has gone viral for the jackets she designed. the wife of 40 niners, fullback kyle ustek, is now revealing she had to turn down a request from vice president kamala harris. in a recent interview, kristen said she got a text from her agent during the time of the super bowl. earlier this year. he told her the vp wanted a jacket and she asked what company, and he said the country. she says she had no help and no way of being

a country to have median single family home prices hit $2 million. this is according to the national association of realtors. they have been tracking prices since 1979. san francisco's second most expensive region on the list, coming in at $1.5 million. california metros represent seven of the top ten. the national median price for a home is $422,000. new at six. just two months after sony pictures acquired alamo drafthouse, the cinema chain is expanding here in the bay area. according to the san francisco business times, alamo drafthouse is going

to have two new locations. one is going to be at westfield valley fair in san jose. the other at the village at san antonio center in mountain view. these will be the bay area's second and third locations. the new mission theater in san francisco opened in 2015, and it is great. the oakland zoo is closing its elephant exhibit this fall. zoos are required to have at least two elephants in order to have an elephant exhibit. and according to our media partners at the east bay times, the zoo only had one elephant and could not find another to join that one. the zoo will now send its one and only elephant to a sanctuary in tennessee. the oakland zoo's elephant exhibit has been around for 35 years. there's no set date for the closure. next, at 630, what former president trump did yesterday that he once criticized, then richmond, now dropping its plan to tax chevron. what's next for the relati

>> a new report shows inflation cooling at 2.9%, its lowest level in three years. trump in north carolina wednesday touted his economic plan, which includes eliminating taxes on social security benefits and tips and cutting energy prices. but he spent most of his speech airing grievances against his rivals. >> she's crazy don't laugh. don't laugh. she's not smart. she's not intelligent. >> the harris campaign responding, accusing trump of running to slash taxes for rich donors and corporations. trump's running mate, senator jd vance, now is facing more criticism for his comments on abortion. during a fox interview last night. vance was asked about suburban women who are concerned about their reproductive rights, suggesting there are bigger issues. >> well, first of all, i don't buy that, laura. i think most suburban women care about the normal things that most americans care about, right? they care about inflation. they

care about the price of groceries. >> meanwhile, a moment of levity in the harris campaign, preparing for next week's convention, releasing this video of harris and governor tim walz, who failed to pick up the phone when harris first called him to ask if he'd be her running mate. >> the most important call of my life. it popped up and we didn't recognize the caller id and it went to it, went to voicemail. >> and when abc news, washington. >> tim. >> despite calling early voting and mail-in voting full of fraud, former president trump cast his ballot early. he voted in florida's republican primary yesterday while leaving the polling site. he called it a great honor to vote, though the president has previously called early voting fraud, he has flip flopped on his views and encouraged people to vote early if they can at certain rallies. >> the city of oakland is apologizing to the widow of a police officer killed in the line of duty after asking her for money. the city sent officer twan lay's widow, an invoice back in may, asking her to return $461. that was money

overpaid to lay during a ransomware attack last year. oakland's police union claims the city even threatened to take the money from the pension that she started to receive after his murder. the 36 year old was shot and killed back in december, trying to stop a robbery. >> realistically, the letter that we saw that was sent to her, we were infuriated with it because of how devastating it is for her to go through the experience that she's going through. >> the union offered to pay the $461, but now the city is waiving the debt and apologizing for any distress or inconvenience to the family. >> encouraging news from san francisco public health officials on opioid overdoses. the city says accidental drug overdoses this past july are half of what they were in july of 2023. the numbers show pretty steady improvement since january. there were 71 over deaths that month. july had 39, the fewest in san francisco for any month this year. sf public

health officials say increasing access to medications that counteract overdoses like methadone is critical to further reducing drug deaths. they're calling for a change in state laws that would allow for that easier access. >> the stigma and barriers caused by this overregulation prevent people from entering and staying in treatment. can you imagine requiring a person who has heart disease to be physically present at a special cardiac clinic every day to take their medication? that's what new methadone patients need to do to get their daily medicatio. >> the health department says 71% of the overdose deaths this year are fentanyl related. >> historic settlement and a story we've been following for months. the city of richmond, dropping its plan to possibly tax chevron in exchange for a financial settlement. now, under the agreement, chevron will pay out a total of $550 million to

>> reggie, that new study found women in the u.s. live, on average, 80 years. that's five years fewer than women in other high income countries. researchers say one major factor is racial and ethnic disparities in the u.s, black and hispanic women are more likely to lack health insurance and forego visits to primary care doctors, making it difficult to catch any issues early. >> women in the u.s. particularly black women, are more likely to say that they have at least one social service need, which means which includes not having nutritious foods, not being able to pay their bills, all those sorts of, things that go beyond health care. but we know directly affect health outcomes. >> american women are also more likely to have multiple chronic health conditions, poor diet, a lack of exercise and obesity contribute to that. the report also found that women face unique social and economic pressures, including a significant pay gap that can weigh on mental health. back to

from the white house. reggie. the white house just unveiled a medicare medication deal. officials say the agreement will save people more than $1 billion when prices go into effect in january of 2026. the cost of ten drugs treating things like heart failure, arthritis, diabetes and blood clots will be lowered. the biden-harris administration says people on medicare are expected to save $1.5 billion in

learned that the maltese family we were renting from had once visited this place and were so enchanted with it that they named their home after it. >> it was also announced that a trail will be named after dianne feinstein, the senator who died last year, helped start that summit in 1997. the crew on board the international space station is getting a special shipment of goodies while they continue to host two additional crew members. they didn't expect to be there. an unmanned progress spacecraft is bringing nearly three tons of food, fuel and supplies to the space station. it's going to be at least another week before we learn the final plan to bring the two astronauts back to earth. you see, they've been stuck on the international space station after nasa discovered issues with the first manned starliner spacecraft that brought them up there. they were only supposed to be there for a few days. it's possible they could be stuck until february. >> a first of its kind facility in the east bay is marking a milestone. george mark children's house in san leandro is celebrating its 20th
